[Q] Soft Bricked Verizon Galaxy Note 2 SCH-I605 VRUFND7 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my Verizon Galaxy Note 2 for nearly 2 years and have not rooted. Several days ago I received the OTA update 4.4.2. Today, I wanted to root but I'm afraid I screwed up the boot loader. Presently, when I try to boot the phone I receive "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." Neither Kies nor Kies 3 recognize the device connected via USB. I can boot into odin mode and odin can talk to the device.
History:
I followed the guide found here:
<link blocked: search for "How to Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Note 2 on VRAMC3!" in google>
However, I overlooked the build number. The guide suggests that the build number should be VRALJB but my build number was VRUFND7 (i.e. KOT49H.I605VRUFND7).
Otherwise, I followed the guide down to step 8 and then received the following results:
<ID:0/006> Added!!
<ID:0/006> Odin v.3 engine (ID:6)..
<ID:0/006> File analysis..
<ID:0/006> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/006> Initialzation..
<ID:0/006> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/006> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
<ID:0/006> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/006> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/006> boot.img
<ID:0/006> NAND Write Start!!
<ID:0/006> recovery.img
<ID:0/006> tz.img
<ID:0/006> sboot.bin
<ID:0/006> FAIL!
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
Do I need to flash a bootloader that is compatible with KOT49H.I605VRUFND7. Else what should I do to complete the root process or revert?
Other details:
I've noticed in other attempts that every time Odin tries to write sboot.bin, the process fails. Is that because the boot loader is locked?
Any insights into helping me fix my bricked device are appreciated. I searched for many hours for more information but I'm afraid this is pretty new territory since the OTA came out only a few days ago.

Well, I have the Titanium grey Verizon Note 2 (SCH-I605) running KitKat 4.4.2 (was updated OTA and is obviously not rooted). I basically followed the guide on:
http://www.android.gs/root-install-cwm-recovery-and-unlock-bootloader-for-the-verizon-samsung-galaxy-note-2-using-casual-one-click-application/
It showed success writing the PIT file and prompted to restart the device but thats where it got stuck. All i see now is the text I earlier mentioned.

Hmm.. first let's see what errors Odin is giving..post the log that Odin spits out here..
If you took an OTA to 4.4.2 is sounds like you might be locked..I'm not positive bc I don't have tie device but I'm pretty sure 4.4.2 for t mobile gs4 was just released, therefore, flashing OTA locks your bootloader and no more flashing customs roms for you. That is unless someone (dev) finds a way to unlock the bootloader..
The only thing I don't understand is you say your back on 4.3.. how did you go about flashing this..
Provide a little more info on the above and I'll see if I can give you a little more

Cannot OTA update to 4.4.2

I had mk2 installed with root, stock ROM. I tried to update with OTA with no luck, so I unrooted, still no luck
Any ideas how to get the 4.4.2 stock ota upgrade? I got rid of root, but the bootloader still says custom.
Thanks so much

Sounds like you still have something modified on your system from root. You should Odin the no-wipe mk2 odin from here and then try taking to OTA.
Why dint r you just Odin the nb1 and not worry about the update
Sent from my Nexus 5
I had the same custom issue after unrooting. Go back and find the saferoot file you downloaded. ( if you no has go finds again)
Depending where your at you'll need to either re-root and install superuser(let it update) or if you haven't removed SU yet don't do it.
The point is you need to use the uninstall.bat from saferoot to remove the root and then remove root via superuser. reboot (it'l still say custom) and wait 10 mins and then reboot again, should now come up clean.
But from there I still wasn't able to update OTA.
Make sure you didn't have ANY apps frozen via titanium backup or any stock apps deleted. Verizon pulls some crazy sorcery
It will be best to just Odin the no-wope mk2 full tar like I said a few posts up

NC5 is the OTA version, I just got it to work once I used odin.
I got the OTA to succesfully install after using odin as well. Flashed back to a fully stock rom(mk2) and did a factory reset to remove the "samsung custom" bootscreen. Once that finished, I installed the new OTA

I have a question; under build number on my phone it says JSS15J.I545VRUEMK2
Under Step 1 in the link you provided I don't see my build number listed anywhere, so how do I know which factory image to download and flash?
Thanks for any help. I'm an extreme novice at rooting. I rooted my phone for the first time back in December using saferoot/SuperSU and am a real newbie when it comes to stuff like this, so I'd really appreciate any help.

I'd prefer the no-wipe version, but it doesn't really matter at this point since I have all my stuff backed up and already did a factory reset anyway. I'm just trying to get my phone back to stock so I can do the OTA update.
Again, I know this is probably a real newbie question but when you say "flash the one for mk2", which build file am I supposed to download out of these that are listed in that post you linked me to: VRUAMDK, VRUAME7 or VRUDMI1?

The MK2 ODIN images can be found here. Don't try flashing anything earlier than MK2 if you're planning to go to NC5 via OTA.
Kiss root good bye for the foreseeable future once you upgrade to KK.

You do not have to factory reset to remove the "Custom" screen.
Restore a factory stock image. Boot your phone. Wait an hour or so. Now, reboot. It won't show "Custom" any longer.
You just need to leave the phone running long enough for the scanner to figure out that it's now back to stock.

[ROM][ODIN] GT-N5110 XXDNE1 (Modem/Kernel/Bootloader/ROM - Full Restore - Unrooted)

I was asked to make this one-click to help simplify the process of restoring a stock factory build for our Note 8.0 users. At this time neither myself or @garwynn are planning on releasing a rooted One-Click.
This Odin One-Click.exe contains the Stock GT-N5110 XXDNE1 Bootloader, Kernel, Modem and ROM for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 16GB Wi-Fi edition (GT-N5110). Yes, that means this comes with the full Knox Bootloader.
There has been no change to the ROM from the initial build released by Samsung.
This will NOT trigger the Yellow Triangle NOR will it increment the Odin flash count.
This one-click resets your whole device to the stock XXDNE1 experience, similar to a factory restore and it may wipe all data. It also contains the full bootloader and Knox.
Instructions:
1: Backup anything important and Disable any PINs.
During this process your device's software will be returned to the Stock setup. All system data will be lost. To be safe, it is best to archive your backup off your device, ie on your PC or Dropbox.
2: Install Samsung USB/Android drivers (if necessary).
Samsung Drivers Download Link
3: Download the XXDNE1 Stock ROM One-Click.
GT-N5110 XXDNE1 Full Restore Unrooted (Compressed Archive).exe (Resets user data)
4: Unzip One-Click ROM using 7zip (this package is a self-extracting exe you should just be able to double-click on it after download and it will do the rest).
5: Start the Odin One-Click.
Navigate to the location where the "GT-N5110 XXDNE1 Full Restore Unrooted.exe" was saved upon extract from the 7Zip archive.
Double-click on "GT-N5110 XXDNE1 Full Restore Unrooted.exe". *On Vista or newer, you may need to right-click on the file and Run as Administrator.
6: Place device in Download Mode.
- Power device completely off.
- Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons, all at the same time.
- Release the buttons only when the ‘Warning!!’ message appears.
- Press [Volume Up] to enter Download mode.
7: Connect USB cable to PC and device.
Odin should show a yellow COM port in the second column. If you do not see a yellow COM port, you may need to run the Odin One-Click as Administrator and/or unplug/plugin the USB cable after starting Odin One-Click.
8: Start Odin flash process.
Press [Start].
9: Complete - PASS!
Status should change to green PASS! At this point your device should automatically reboot.
The boot process will take slightly longer than usual during which time you'll see the Samsung logo screen.
Congratulations! You've flashed the Factory Restore XXDNE1 build!

I believe it would mess up your bootloader but I don't have a way to verify as I don't have the n5100. Sorry!

Will this reset the flash counter and allow ota updates? Or do you need to reset flash counter before you do this?

This won't reset the counter but it won't increment it either. This is a 100% stock unrooted ROM so you'll be able to take OTA's again after flashing.
Can I side load this with ADB? I am currently bricked and looking to start over if I can get my N5110 to install another ROM.

I have full access to recovery and download modes.
I am unable to Odin and flash because of partition errors. I plan on using TWRP and the ADB option with Android SDk. Do you think this will work?
I have not been able to Odin . Pit files successfully and re-partition. I am hoping ADB will allow me to put the rom inside the current partitions and use TWRP to flash.
Just a thought. I really don't know what I am doing or how to fix it. But if I have download mode and recovery, I should be able to find a way.
I am currently in a bootloop to recovery.
Thanks for your response and any suggestions you may have.

Unfortunately I don't know that this will work for you at this time. Essentially the one-click is a repackaged TAR. The TAR itself contains image files that correspond to specific partitions on your device. If the partitions on the device don't match up Odin is supposed to throw up a flag and stop the flash in order to prevent bricking the device.
I can't be 100% certain but given the fact it is stopping on sboot.bin, my guess is that the issues you are experiencing probably come from flashing a ZIP bootloader or ROM for another device. If that's the case we might be able to backtrack and undo what you've done so far but this won't work unless you have the right partition structures already in place.
I have spent hours trying to re-partition. The furthest I have gotten is where I am now... Stuck on Get PIT for mapping..
.. In ODIN. I am using the only PIT file for N5110 available on the entire World Wide Web!

hello, could someone please point me in the right direction. I've been trying to use this tool, I have access to stock recovery, when I factory reset it says it can't mount the /system. I tried this tool to reinstall every thing, but it fails at sboot.bin. all the research I've done leads me to believe this has something to do with the bootloader being locked, but I can't find anything about it, I keep getting lead back to this post. If anyone could point me where I need to be to figure this out I would really appreciate it.
Edit: I'm not sure what my problem was, but I eventually downloaded the stock 4.4.2 firmware and was able to flash through Odin and get up and running.

For some reason they post the US version under Cellular South. You'll need to create a free account to download. It took about am hour for me to download with the free account.

Does this clean up all the crap left over from many flashes & nandroid backups & restores? I find I have a lot of bits like old directories from previous meddling (mine) & would like to a real clean up back to pristine stock (so I can start meddling again, sort of from scratch so to speak.
Going to run it anyway (meddling again) to see what comes out the other end but was curious 'is all.

Not able to verify as I no longer have the Note 8 but if I remember correctly the error you are getting is due to your device having a newer bootloader than the one-click. Most of the time a new bootloader locks out flashing of older bootloaders.

Help! Odin Bootloading Issue on Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II
Used the Odin tool (which I've done in the past without issue) to bootload the 4.4.2 software onto my phone and it now just flashes the start-up banner. Worse, my computer no longer recognizes my phone as a valid device, so attempts to load something else will not work.

Okay, so, I've managed to get my device recognized by placing it in Odin Mode and reconnecting. I still can't bootload any software, though, it keeps resulting in failures. :crying:

I appreciate your taking the time to reply to my post. I read over the tips you listed and tried those I hadn't already. I've switched my usb cord to every port on my computer. I've switched to different cords, oem and otherwise. I downloaded KIES, as per the last of your suggestions, and can't say how useful that may or may not be, as my device never would connect to the KIES interface. I've had many attempted firmware loads on my phone via ODIN, but all give me the unsuccessful write message. I've tried flashing TWRP, which I was pretty sure I already had on my phone, but still no bueno. It won't let me access TWRP if I do have it, and if I don't . . . well, there's that. I don't really know what else to do.

Oh, I also tried ODIN 3.7, 3.9, and 3.10.
@ConvolutedSpeech,
You can not install a custom recovery like TRWP on your phone after it got upgraded to 4.4.2 because the bootloader is locked with no current method for you to unlock it.
The only thing you can do right now is to restore the phone back to factory stock 4.4.2. There's a root method called GhettoRoot for 4.4.2, but no bootloader unlock method at present.
If you can post the log from Odin showing the error you're getting when trying to restore your phone, that will help others to help you. (I'm not sure why Kies couldn't see your phone, but I would uninstall it now or make sure it's totally disabled when running Odin again since the 2 programs can conflict).
I won't be able to respond for a while due to my job, but maybe someone else can help out.

Thank you for all of your time. From looking at the posts on Ghettoroot it looks like it requires being able to send files to your phone and put it in debugging mode . . . which I can't so much do, given my phone won't let me in it. Crickets, huh?
@ConvolutedSpeech,
Can you confirm that you do have a Verizon Note 2 model SCH-I605?
Also, did you try to Odin flash any other device's firmware onto your phone (like the international N7100 firmware). If so, that would have overwritten your Verizon bootloader/firmware and you won't be able to use ODIN to restore your phone if that's the case.
If you do have the Verizon Note 2 and didn't accidentally flash another device firmware onto it , then you should be able to restore your phone back to Verizon factory stock 4.4.2.
Droidstyle's restore guide has step by step instructions on how to Odin restore the phone. If you're not flashing the pit file with the firmware tar file... then try that as well.
If it won't work on your computer and you have access to another computer (preferably one with Windows 7), then try the restore on that. Also... make sure you have a good download of the firmware.... you can grab the Verizon 4.4.2 firmware from here if you're not getting it from Sammobile already: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/30950/I605VRUFND7_I605VZWFND7_VZW.zip/

Hey mattnmag,
Yes, I do have a Verizon Note 2 SCH-I605. No, I've been trying to flash the Sammobile sourced version of the download you link to, but I suppose I could try redownloading it, for giggles, one never knows. I'll check out the restore guide and see if I'm missing anything. The computer I'm using is running on Windows 7, but I guess I could try my laptop, which also runs on 7. I really do appreciate all the time you've spent trying to help me.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Okay, either I'm a dumbass, or you're a genius, but at this point I don't care how you want to label it. Flashing the PIT file WITH THE firmware worked beautifully . . . I think . . . my phone is now starting up and I got a full load and pass in ODIN. OMG, tytytytyty! I love you! Hahahaha, yes, it's definitely starting up! Yayyy! F*** yeah, MY PHONE IS ALIVE!
LOL. I'm glad to hear you fixed it. Just to be sure you get a totally fresh start with nothing leftover... it may be a good idea to boot into stock recovery and wipe cache and complete a factory reset.

Returning to stock
So I know that there are different instructions for returning to stock with odin after having taken the MJ9 4.3 OTA update, but I honestly don't remember if I did take the update. I have had this phone for so long, as well as other phones, and I just can't remember if I took it. Is there a way to either be able to tell if I did, or to return to stock safely regardless?

When you go to your phone's System Settings/About Phone, what does it show under Android Version and Build Number? That may help you determine what you're running.
An easy way to confirm what bootloader you're on would be to boot into Odin Mode (Volume Down+Home Button+Power Button at the same time, then press volume up to continue to Odin Mode). If it looks like the picture I've attached of ODIN mode from my phone (which is running 4.1.2), then your bootloader would not be on 4.3 or 4.4.2 because there's nothing about Knox.
But... if you see anything about Knox when in Odin mode, then it will be on 4.3 or higher bootloader. If it's on 4.3 or higher, then you won't be able to downgrade back to 4.1.2 and would need to restore to stock 4.3 or 4.4.2 (depending on what build version your on).
In Odin mode it says
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SCH-I605
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD (Yes, 1 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
It looks like you're still on 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 bootloader... since there's no mention of Knox. You should be able to follow section 1b in Droidstyle's Restore guide to restore the phone to factory stock 4.1.2 VRAMC3. This is the bootloader you'll want to stay on if you want to have the option to use Casual to unlock the bootloader and root/run custom ROM's. Your phone would probably be more valuable to others as well if you're going to sell it on Swappa.
Edit: Look into Chainfire's Triangle away app from the Play Store if you want to reset the Binary count back to 0. (And only use Triangle away on rooted 4.1.2 with unlocked bootloader for our phone... if you try it on 4.3 or 4.4.2, it may hard brick the device. Here's the XDA thread on Triangle Away if interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/2014-01-15-triangleaway-v3-26-t1494114
Thank you! So I was originally restoring to stock unrooted because For some reason my phone stopped allowing me to flash any ROM. I unrooted, then rooted with casual noyou, and I still can't flash any ROM. I have verified that I do have root, and I have tried with both CWM and TWRP, but nothing. Any idea what could be causing this? Or how to fix it? I am stuck on stock 4.1.1 now.
I'm not sure if any of the custom ROM'S in the development threads will work with a 4.1.1 base... (they might.. but I'm not sure). I would probably use Droidstyle's guide to Odin restore the phone to 4.1.2 VRAMC3, then would boot into stock recovery and wipe cache & complete a factory reset just to make sure you've got a totally clean slate to work from.
Then, I'd run CASUAL again to root and unlock the bootloader.
(Edit)... I'm also wondering if the custom recovery that you were using to try to flash the ROM could have been too old for the newer ROM'S... or the wrong custom recovery. Some ROM'S need a specific version of the custom recovery to work, so make sure you read through the thread of whichever ROM you want to flash and that you're using the recommended version of the recovery for that specific ROM.

Verizon note 2 Root problems.
I had my Note 2 SCH-I605 rooted before this, I bricked it and now its back to life but I can not get anything to work for root. I have tried odin, casual and kingo root and Ghettoroot. Odin says It has passed etc... and I never have root. Kingo says it works and that it has installed su but its never there. I have even checked with root checker to verify. And no root. I have the stock firmware (4.4.2) back on and I used odin to put the stock firmware back on. Can anyone shed any light on what I might be doing wrong.

odin restore back to either mdk or nc5. You can just do a simple google "odin nc5(or mdk) stock tar xda" on Google for instructions.

If you are definitely returning it I would recommend you to flash the nc5 full wipe file on this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172. This will remove root, upgrade your base version to a more current one, and wipe your data. Beware though, if you flash nc5 then you won't be able to get your current mdk version back.

Yea it's definitely going back for sure. The guy at Verizon is just waiting on me to unroot it so we can swap it out for a referbished one for my father in law. Thanks for the help though. Highly appreciated bro.

my pleasure.
Very much the same problem...
Son is up for renewal and was going to trade his verizon s4 in for the s5 this friday but, cant use ODIN or anything else to get it to take
He had been using the hyperdrive aroma rom and the phone was perfect (we havent upgraded to the latest rom, think he was on 17?) and the phone was fine
only reason we were going to take it back to stock was to trade it in.
Have tried to use various methods (ODIN) on this forum and all have failed.
This is a 32Gb S4 if that makes any difference
The latest was trying to use the Verizon SCH-I545 4.2.2 562219 Stock Restore file and it fails everytime
Have used two different computers, 2 different usb cords (wife has one as well) and various versions of ODIN and tar files...all fail
best I can tell is the custom recovery is gone...however I can get into ASR but, all end in fails.
What am i missing here?

Assuming you have good downloads, what version (s) of Odin have you tried? Did you install the correct Samsung drivers? Is USB debugging turned on under settings/more/about phone/developer options? Do you have anti-virus running/active?

I have tried ODIN 1.85. 3.09 and 3.07 that I know of, may have used some others yesterday not sure..wasted about an entire day trying to fix this screwup.
Yes, installed the drivers a couple of times and also tried to use Kies
I cant get into the settings to check the usb debugging at this time because the phone wont boot after the initial flash yesterday
No av running on the computers I was using during the work
I have tried several of the guides on this site multiple times and nothing is working.
I dont know a whole lot about this stuff, usually I get brought in when he screws something up or its not working but, this one is on me trying to take it back to stock so we can trade it in this Friday....so, whatever was done wrong, I did it this time! lol
Couple things that might help someone who understands this more
If I just turn the phone on to "normal boot"..goes to yellow triangle
ODIN mode
name schi545
cur binary samsung official
sys status custom
knox lock 0x0
knox warranty void 0x0
csb-config-lsb 0x30
write protection enable
emmc burst mode enabled
----------------------------------------------------------------------
going into recovery
i get the custom os can cause critical problems
vol up continue
vol down restart
yellow triangle
name schi545
cur binary samsung official
sys status custom
knox lock 0x0
knox warranty void 0x0
csb-config-lsb 0x30

Not sure whether that will help or not and again, this is a 32gb S4, not sure whether that matters or not

So you have not gotten a screen that says "Downloading do not turn off target"?

Oh yes, I can get to that screen but when trying to load the files with ODIN it fails.

You said you were using the 4.2.2 files, this is the firmware version you were on?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Free mobile app
I am pretty sure thats what the phone came (4.2.2) with when he/we first got it.
Since then, we upgraded it to the hyperdrive rom and I think, not sure, he was on release 17
So, I believe that requires the phone to be at 4.4.2 but I may be mistaken

You can still run Hyperdrive if you are on 4.2.2 in fact, you can flash just about anything because of the loki exploit on the MDK bootloader. Did you use the files found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751461 and follow the instructions exactly as they are written?

Yes, thats actually the first thread I was following to get it done and it failed right off the bat.
Then I was wondering if I had the wrong thread or files so, looked elsewhere.
Phone was working perfectly before I decided to do this and that is where it started..downhill sense then.
I probably did that thread 3-4 times..all ending the same way but I can try it again if you think it will do any good

I also tried to run the VRUFNC5 Full-Wipe Verizon SCH-I545 4.2.2 562219 Stock Restore.tar.md5 in 3.07
and now its crashing ODIN..didnt do that before.
Runtime error application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way
The VRUFNC5 file might not work if mine is a VRUAMDK? just a guess?

You are sure you are on MDK and 4.2.2?
[Edit]: The reason I ask is because it is failing at aboot.mbn which leads me to believe you are not on MDK. To be on MDK would mean you bought the phone in like the very first week of its release and never took an OTA, is this the case?
Sent from my Empty Galaxy
positive on the mdk...pretty sure on the 4.2.2 but, I cannot be sure at this moment
to my knowledge, he never did any other upgrades without me but, that might not be true!
Problem is, there is no way I can determine or check that with the phone in the condition it is right now...correct?

If you are positive you are on MDK then you're on 4.2.2 as well and no, the NC5 files won't work. Try booting into recovery and wiping cache and wipe data/factory reset then try booting into download mode and running Odin again. Or if you have a backup in zip format on your external SD card you could try side loading that through recovery mode just select "install from zip" or whatever it says.

Going backwards now...YESTERDAY after this issue arose, I was still able to get into the ASR..today after trying to flash it again, not happening
NOW, yesllow triangle..firmware encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in Kies and try again
Of course trying that with Kies, it doesnt recognize the phone now.
Am I fighting a losing battle here? lol
