[Q] Z Ultra GPE back to stock 4.4.2 - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I just bought a ZU GPE with 4.4.3 (rooted, custom recovery installed) that has a broken rear camera (can't focus, can't shoot).
Will going back to 4.4.2 fix the issue?
How can I flash the system dump (ZU4.4.2.zip) from the following thread? Will it brick my phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2570197
I am used to going back to stock with RUU files on my HTC M7 and M8 but this is my first Sony and I am completely lost.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

See this post, and yes rolling back to 4.4.2 should fix rear camera.

Thanks for the reply but that link is for 4.4.3. I just can't seem to find 4.4.2 system, BOOT and FOTAKernal files anywhere.
All I found was a system dump file ZU4.4.2. Where can I find the appropriate files?
Thanks!

Sorry I didn't catch that the post linked to 4.4.3 files. I rolled back to 4.4.2 with a nandroid backup. If you don't find the files you need by tomorrow I will try to see if I would be able to pull them for you.

You are not the only one trying to get back to 4.4.2, I asked in this post if either of these ideas would work but wasn't answered.

Where did you manage to find a nandroid backup of the zu gpe?
Is there an online repository of nandroid backup files somewhere on the internet?

No I had my own that I made as soon as I unlocked boot loader and flashed boot img with recovery.
Edit.. If anyone can answer those questions I linked to, or provide the adb commands needed to pull the system dump I would be grateful.

Once I get a hold of the nandroid backup file, I can restore from ClockworkMod Recovery and the camera will be instantly fixed?
I used to just use RUU files for my HTC M7 and M8 to go back to stock and never used nandroid before.
Once I fix the camera, do I remove custom recovery and then unroot before patching the 4.4.3 OTA?
Sorry about the noob questions. This is my first Sony device. Thank you for your help!

I would try this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2761698
with the 4.4.2 full OTA
Will it work?
Will the OTA zip need editing to remove the version check, and will that work?
@DooMLoRD?

This is my first Sony since the X10a and I have had it for maybe a month. I have more questions than answers, a nandroid from your own device will fix your own device. Never got answer about restoring to another device, camera only stays fixed on 4.4.2 once you update to 4.4.3 it will break again. Word of warning do not flash any Sony ftf files as the GPe has a different partition layout.

I tried it but the phone wouldn't take it because of the version check. I wish there is a patched version.
Btw, what does the 4.4.3 OTA do that breaks the camera? Is it the unlocked boot loader or the presence of custom recovery at the time of update?

Thanks for the warning. Btw, what is a 'system dump' and is it flashable on a GPE device? There is a ZU4.4.2.zip system dump file in one of the threads. I have unzipped the file and it contains 10 image files.

I think those are all the partitions, and no one has determined why some people end up with broken cameras on update. I wouldn't try any ZU stuff only GPe ( some of them like system may not brick your phone but then you have frankenfirmware) anyways I am out for the night and phone is going dead, I'll check back tomorrow.

Thank you so much! I will wait for your Nandroid backup file. Hope that fixes the camera problem. This phone is a birthday present for my wife. She wouldn't mind being stuck at 4.4.2 forever as long as camera is working.

Sorry if I wasn't clear I will try to pull 4.4.2 system img. and boot img. So you could fastboot them per DooMLoRD suggestion. I still am not clear if my nandroid would work on your phone or whether it would put my info at risk. But first thing I am going to try just to satisfy my own curiosity is update to 4.4.3 then flash a boot img. with flashtool, flash custom ROM then try to restore to 4.4.2 using stock recovery and adb. If that works it will be a route for everyone that needs it. I suck at communicating my thoughts into a post but will be willing to help make a guide if it works.

Easy enough to remove the version check in the 4.4.2 ota, and I'm sure that it would then install with only a error on patching the bootloader.
Maybe you should move this to the gpe section so doomlord might see it sooner

@adfurgerson, another option to help @ddslee might be to flash a Carbon version (maybe pre 4.4.3) then the the 4.4.2 OTA?

@blueether I am at 4.4.2 GPe right now with advanced stock kernel, DooMLoRD posted stock kernel in a flashable zip that we can get boot img from I assume. Now I need to know how to pull the system img and we should be able to get some progress. My idea of trying to go to custom ROM to get back to stock is probably not the best option for someone only needing to downgrade to get camera back.

[Q] rooted but can't load rom

I am super frustrated right now, because of the fact I rooted my phone a year after I got it and there aren't enough devs supporting this phone anymore.. :crying:
Anywhoo, I have Unlocked my BootLoader and I have set up my custom recovery with TWRP 2.5.0.0 since the latest doesn't work for my phone. I have Access with SuperSU going through the pain of updating the binary. Now, my latest problem and only problem that hinders me from using the Roms I desire is, I'm stuck at BootLoop. My phone shows the HTC logo and then reboots.
I super wiped, I did wipe before and after, I tried all methods of wiping, unless wiping isn't the same anymore from the OG EVO days.
The ROMS, I would like to install is Paranoid Android, BeanStalk, CM Nightlies 10.2, & SuperNEXUS.
I have Tested only BeanStalk and SuperNexus and they both do the same exact thing which brings me to bootloop. The great thing about it is, which is kind of strange but i'm very thankful is that, I can still Restore my phone with my back up! =D
So far I have used TWRP, I don't really feel comfy with using Clockwork. Due to previous experiences, It just doesn't give a clean wipe IMO.
YES, I have S-ON.
Do i really need S-OFF to run these Roms? My phone is updated with 3.17, and everything from the last update a week ago, I believe.
I just did everything within the last 24 hrs.
PLEASE HELP ME! =(
Since you are S-ON you need to fastboot flash the boot.img/kernel then the rom

It's always a good idea to have at least one backup on your sdcard.
No you won't need to flash the boot.img if you restore your backup.
You will only need to flash the boot.img everytime you flash a new rom for the first time

[q] 5.0 gpe problems please help immedialy!!!!!

So I saw this lollipop rom(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716306) and I was waiting for the official one from htc but this had what I wanted. It said I need to have the 4.4.4 firmware but I didnt know how to get it because I couldnt get the ota update on stock for a certain reason and so it flashed the 4.4.4 gpe rom then after that I flashed the 5.0 rom but now I have no wifi and when I reboot its in the bootloop and I dont know what to do now. I would appreciate it if anyone could try and help me. Thank you.
If you just flash a GPe rom it dosent mean you flashed the firmware. I was actually having this same problem so I just flashed the US Dev Sense 4.4.4 firmware and the Lollipop rom worked fine.

[Q] Easy Question: I have a rooted 4.4.4, can I upgrade to Lollipop the normal way?

Hi There,
I'm running a rooted version of KitKat 4.4.4 on my Z2 (23.0.1.A.0.167) and I was just wondering about the process of upgrading to a rooted version of Lollipop. Can I just upgrade using the standard method (from the settings menu) and retain root access? Or will I have to flash an entirely new Lollipop ROM onto the device and then root that separately?
I'm in no rush for Lollipop so I'm happy to wait for the official upgrade, but if it won't be possible or will mess up my device then I'd rather just do whatever it takes to get it flashed.

I guess your bootloader is still intact, if so you're good to go. You will will only lose root when you update to lollipop through OTA.
On the other hand, if you've unlocked your bootloader and probably have a custom kernel, then I'm afraid ota will not work.
Hope this helps.

If the desired outcome is root on lollipop, don't do ota.
Install recovery (if you don't have one) and flash a rooted lollipop zip through recovery.

I think I have recovery, though I can't remember to be honest. I followed a guide here when I rooted my Z2.
If I flash a rooted L zip does this mean I'll lose all my apps/data? I remember that I did when I rooted 4.4.4 but the process was such a headache that I can't remember which parts required wiping everything from my phone.
Also, is there a ROM version you'd recommend? Is the current one stable or should I wait a little while longer for a better one?
Google recovery and Xperia to see videos of how to get into recovery to find out if you have it.
You don't 'need' to wipe, but it's always advised. Before I flash I do a nandroid backup and wipe and recovery specific app data with nandroid manager.
Have a look at the dev section, there is a rooted stock lollipop room there. lollipop is stable and awesome.
If.I helped don't forget to hit thanks [emoji14]

Is it worth waiting for a Lollipop 5.1 ROM or would this ROM update to 5.1 without needing to be flashed? http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/stock-d6503-23-1-0-690-bal-rooted-t3057150/ (I presume this is the ROM you were talking about?)

So seeing as I have CWM recovery on there. Does this mean I can just use flashtool to put the lollipop ROM onto CWM Recovery and then do 'install from zip' and all should be good?
What would happen if I flashed without wiping the data? I'm more inclined to wipe too, but I wondered if it's possible to do it without wiping.

Yea that's what I was referring to. Once 5.1 comes out you'll need to do the same thing to keep root so it's up to you if you do it once or twice.

No. No flashtool needed just get the zip into the phone (either download it on the phone or use a usb cable to copy it over) then go to install zip.

What would happen depends on what you've done:
Best case nothing happens
Medium case apps misbehave
Worst case bootloop
It is possible and give it a go. Make sure you do a backup first and copy the backup to your computer just in case. If bad things happen, recovery the backup and try again another way.

It is possible and give it a go. Make sure you do a backup first and copy the backup to your computer just in case. If bad things happen, recovery the backup and try again another way.

Okay perfect, thanks for that. One last question though, in that thread with the Lollipop ROM someone mentioned that you could lose your recovery if you install it (I guess because of a bug or something). Will this affect me if I want to install 5.1 later on?
Not really. You'll just need to get back to a ROM with recovery for locked bootloader or wait until they get recovery working on locked bootloader on 5.0

Okay, so my bootloader has been unlocked. Does that mean I won't be affected at all?

Is that first sentence a statement or a question?
Bootloader unlocked means freedom. Life is a lot easier, just flash a kernel with recovery and upgrade

Yes my bootloader is unlocked, I used the Sony method. I didn't think I could flash a rooted ROM without it to be honest.
Hmm, I think I'm confusing recovery with Bootloader though here. I thought Recovery was part of the bootloader unlocking process and was separate from the ROM. Kind of like a small management interface to flash new ROMs and manage the device from the boot partition.
Does anyone have an answer to the above? I'm just trying to make sense of the process here.
What do you want to know? What the bootloader is?

I'd really like to know what 'recovery' is exactly and how it differs from either a ROM or a bootloader. I understand the Xperia Z2 stock rooted Lollipop ROM has no recovery, so I want to know what exactly that means and what the implications are in the event I choose to upgrade to 5.1 in the future.

You are going to follow his instructions but use the files from this OP
OK, so using the above file and his instructions, I go back to stock. At that point, I should be able to (do my own backup again) grab the OTA from AT&T and then go through the bootloader unlock, TWRP and rooting...correct? My stock backup is corrupt, so this is a lifesaver!!!
Thanks!

I haven't tried the OTA part, but yes you should be read only system with a stock system and boot.img, unfortunately I don't have the recovery image which would be needed for the OTA to actually flash.
Either way glad I could help

[ROM][ROOT][SHV-E160S] Is it possible to update from JB 4.1.2 MJ1 to JB 4.1.2 MH2??

Hello guys!
I just wanted to ask if it is possible to update Galaxy Note SHV-E160S 32GB Internal from JB 4.1.2 MJ1 to JB 4.1.2 MH2? The phone's build # is E160SKSJMJ1. I want to root the phone using Tegrak's but I cannot seem to find any build that is compatible with MJ1. I hope someone can help me here.
Thanks!
That would actually be downgrading. Shouldn't be a problem through in that case. Since it's the same Android version and the bootloader isn't locked, there shouldn't be a problem. Not sure why you wouldn't try the method I suggested on your other post, but whatever works for you.

Hi es0tericcha0s, since I'm a noob to this rooting process I'm still confused if TWRP can be used to root the phone. If it can, I shouldn't be needing to downgrade the FW and just use TWRP to root it?
http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu Download that on your phone, boot to TWRP, install zip, reboot, win.

Thanks es0tericcha0s! Just to be clear on the steps.
I'll flash TWRP on my phone then boot it?
Then put UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip on my phone's root folder
Then install it using TWRP?
Yep yep.

Done! Thanks es0tericcha0s. I really appreciate your help. :good::good:
You're welcome. Glad you finally got it. One more piece of advice : boot back to TWRP and make a nandroid backup. This will get you out of most trouble in case you do something you shouldn't with root.

Alright. Anyway, what do you suggest or recommend to back up instead of backing up all the folders
Boot
System
Data
Efs (if it has that option)
