06/25 Google Now Update hacking - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I'm messing around with the settings here.
As you might know, Google released an update for Google Now. It now allows the use of "OK Google anywhere" and is always listening while charging, pretty much like Moto X! Yay
But it seems that not everybody is getting it, mostly folks outside U.S., and the Moto X is having a hard time to make it run.
As I always mod the Google Now to work on my mother language, I did a brief comparison between both new and old "StartupSettings.bin" and found a couple of new guys, but two caught my eye:
Code:
hotword_blacklisted_devices>XT1049,XT1050,XT1052,XT1053,XT1055,XT1056,XT1058,XT1060,XT912A
Those are all Moto X versions
and:
Code:
!relationships_peopleapi_http_path4https://www.googleapis.com/plus/v2whitelisted/people
which might be the "VIP" list to see if the user is eligible for the new feature.
Some guy from AndroidPolice assured that he could get the feature for a single-use only, if he logged out of Google Now, logged in and tried the feature out. After the first use, the feature would be removed, and all he'd get is the typical "OK Google" from the home screen.
What do you guys think? I'll try to set the whitelist to localhost here to see what happens.

Holy crap dude, it worked.
I modded Google Now to work with my Mother Language, pt-BR. I'll have a look to see if I make it able to work on pt-BR too. Every text and instructions are correct in this language, so it must only be a simple think.
Thank you!
------------------
Damn. It presents me the option to record my voice three times for later recognition, but it crashes just at the end.
So close..
------------------
So stupid! There's no need for this anymore. It has "two languages" now. I set the primary as English and the secondary as Portuguese (Brasil).
Works flawless! This is awesome. Thanks

[Q] re-arrange items/apps in "share via" list

hi
here's a little pet peeve of mine
whenever i go to share a picture, website link, etc i am presented with a *huge* list of apps that i could ever possibly use
but here's the truth - i only ever use three (maybe four) of those apps
and, just an extra bonus, those three or four are distributed all up and down that list - and yeah, the gmail icon is at the bottom! lol
is there *any* way to modify that list??
or an app that lets us mod that list??
i'm asking you guys cuz you would know
and... if anybody wants an idea for an app to build... there ya go! i'd pay 99cents (heck, probably even 1.99) for such an app!
and, while i'm asking, i might as well say what would be just killer features ---- allow us to pick the say top five apps that would always show up, and the last entry says "all" so the entire list becomes available
would be good to be able to sort the apps that show up in that list too
anyway.. just gonna throw that out there
??
no one has anything to say about this?
Shame that there are no replies, as this is also bugging me. Here's a bump for the topic.
Annoying me as well. Recently downloaded a QR app and the damn thing added TWO entries. I'd love to be able to remove everything but email, facebook, and messaging...
How can this still be an issue
I can't believe there's no way to filter the list or at least sort the list in order used.
'Intents' and MIME-types
Recently I find that I've become rater annoyed with the list for "share via", and started wondering how I might go about deleting specific items or at the very least rearrange the order in which they appear.
I've been unable to find the answer, as most threads, only consist of the question, and no answers.
I did however find out that what causes an app to appear in the "share via"-list is an 'Intents'-argument with regards to MIME-types (.jpg or .txt etc.) when coding the app.
See: (add the http yourselves, as I'm unable to, with this being my first post)
stackoverflow .com/questions/7891473/how-to-write-an-android-share-plugin
&
stackoverflow .com/questions/3553017/android-share-via-dialog
That means, that in order to remove them from the list, we would need some app, like LBE Privacy Guard, that could limit the "offending" app's 'Intents' in certain regards.
However I've been unable to find anyone that seems to know which file to tweak in order to rearrange the order in which they appear.
I doubt this helps anyone very much, but it may just lead someone on the right path to maybe coming up with a fix for this.
Try 'Andmade Share' from the market, seems like it would be what you're after.

or
share customizer

Feature request added at code.google 2012-01-25
It would appear that a feature request has been put in at code.google at 2012-01-25
(Again add the http-part yourselves)
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24741
While we are waiting for this "obvious" feature, the above reply's seem to offer what I'm asking for, at least in an app, though it ought to be built in...
Thx a lot itscro & biopsin
EDIT: I think I'll pass on the Share Customizer, with all the funky (chinese?) writing, and dec. 2011 latest update.
Andmade Share however looks like a winner, and I like the fact, that it doesn't require any permissions...
Awesome. Andmade Share seems to do the trick. Love it when old threads are brought back to life and solve a problem.

Google-Now Change the keyword Ok Google

So this morning I said OKAY GOOGLE CALL XYZ ON LANDLINE - and two phones started dialing. Obviously there is no way to avoid this.
Any dev out there who could try a hack that allows to define personal keywords? Or is there someone from Google who reads this and helps?
I imagine that in the not so far future you can say OKAY GOOGLE in a MacDos and 20 phones will reply.
Thanx in advance.
Reviving a 4 year old post. ?
Is there an answer here?
Had the ability to customize the keyword with my Droid Turbo in 2014 and LOVED it.
Open Mic+ looks like it used to do it? I DL'd tm3 versions of it. One didn't work, one wouldn't even complete DL'ing, & the 3rd had a not from developer saying he promised Google he would disable it?
Developer mentioned something called Commandr but it doesn't seem to do anything.
DL'd the old Moto app and it wouldn't launch.
Anyone know how to customized the OK Google command?

New Touch user comments and questions.

I just got my Meizu MX4 and find several things which irritate me, was wondering if I can make suggestions for updates somewhere? Here are a few examples:
How do I get temp in C, with Display Language US English?
NearBy took an entire day to finally figure out where I live, although location is turned on and I tried to show it where I am.
Still new, more to follow if this is the place.

As far as I know there is a bug report for this and the developers are working on it. Let's see if the next update fixes the issue.
Thank you for the response Nikwen,
The weather app is automatically the Weather Channel, the only setting possible is location on or off. I had expected it to be there.
I'll keep my eye open for the fix to my other comment and also for additional things to talk about. I'm essentially very satisfied with the user experience and am certain that once apps and scopes begin showing up in numbers Ubuntu will be a viable alternative to the others on the market.
I assume I can continue to bring up problems I find here.
Thanks again
O
Found the next thing, although it's probably known. In camera I can't zoom. The zoom - + show, but nothing happens.
So, I found that I can change the weather app to celsius, but it doesn't work in the weather channel and it's what's used in NearBy with F.
I also found that the Amazon app goes automatically to Amazon.co.uk, but I live in Germany, I want .de, but how?
Next, I browsed Google.com, it sent me to Google.de, what else? I didn't want that, but it's impossible to get to complete English. The Google page is English, but when I touch settings, I land in a German page.
Those are my newest grumps, I'll keep looking.
TY for listening!
O
WiFi hotspot would also be nice, though I understand the OS is new and time will bring new features.

It should be out in September or maybe later this month if we're lucky !
TY antole, that's welcome info. This morning I got an update, since then I get no notifications from gmail. Is that normal or do I need to make a setting? Another thing, Near By has disappeared, so I no longer see F not certain if that's good or bad atm.
I'm just enjoying playing with my new toy and thank all devs for the hard work amnd for putting up with my problems.
O
I haven't even tried the Gmail app sorry
My Gmail account is configured with Dekko
I didn't get any update this morning, was the update for the Gmail app ?
I've been running on OTA-5 for approximately two weeks now and I've had no issue with The Weather Channel displaying temperature in C but I live in France so that seems normal
My NearBy scope hasn't gone anywhere either ;p

The update was for Nexus devices only as the messaging issue they fixed didn't appear on other devices.
Back with more! Sorry to say I was overwelmed by the amount of work needed on OT and didn't want to sound like I was putting it down, so I stopped writing. Most are small, wish I could this or that. I found one today though which I had to ask about.
I tried to upload files to my P today, win7 couldn't do it so I tried Ubuntu desktop, 14.04 which couldn't mount my phone. Uh oh, what now? I can't find a setting anywhere which helps. Any advice would be appreciated.
Oh and the update I assume was somethsomething to get my new phone up to the current version. I must have removed Near By by accident, I have it back now, still in F. Must be the language, custom I live in germany but us us english.
Ty for the help!
O
If you cannot mount your phone, you can always enable ssh and use sftp to transfer files. Usual mounting should work though.
(If it still doesn't, you could try installing ADB on your computer. It might help.)
Thanks for your help Nik,
I figured it out, I needed to get into Developer Mode in order to get USB to work. Now I'm in, but have the next problem. I can only see the Home directories, but I want to download the files in the .local/share but I have no idea how to get there. On my MX4 I've gotten to the folder I want using File Manager, but how do I get there from my PC? Or more specifically, how do I download the files stored there?
O
Yeah, hotspot is here! Haven't had time to test it yet, but I love to watch UT develop.
Still hoping for a tip on getting to my files from a PC. I understand it's a kinda noobish question, but until now I've only fixed problems as they arrise in Ubuntu, haven't had time for it. Now I've started and don't know where to search for help.
And the potshot works great. Saw Cantata Nil, looks interesting, but having a problem finding servers, or do I have to set up my own server?
Thanx
O
Stupid auto correct, I meant hotspot and Nik.
I've finally found AskUbuntu, so I'm working on finding my own answers.

MT2L03 Carbon 5.1.1 Multiple user (Guest)

I got Carbon successfully installed and love it! But one thing I miss is how easy it is to stop users from browsing my private data when I hand my phone over to them (Emui Privacy Protection, google (in quotes) Hide Your Contact, Album and App)
I figure with Carbon the closest equivalent is the guest account?
If it isn't, please clue me in, but if it is, my phone is limited to one user account when I can't force fw.max_users=4 to stick.
pm get-max-users keeps going back to 1 after every reboot.
Does anyone know of an alternative locking functionality to that emui awesomeness I had before? Or is there a way to make guest work?
Sorry to make y'all google above, I'm a newbie and am not allowed to add url's to this post

The URL that comes up when you google "Hide Your Contact, Album and App" is too long to do that, but it comes up instantly with the exact results that I'd paste anyway.
I just wanted to illustrate the feature that I am missing and wish I could make work in Carbon. Thinking about reverting to emui just for that feature, but if I did that I'd feel so inadequate, having worked so hard to get twrp and carbon installed.

Yeah, what I need though is more like what's available in the emui stock os, where you can lock your phone, unlock it with an alternate pin, and the temporary user can't open any but the apps you specify.
Rebooting to a separate rom is too much trouble for handing the phone off for 30 secs.
Have you seen the emui privacy protection feature? Pretty cool.
I'll probably just use screen pinning; not quite as good, but it works.
You could use stock ROM most of the time when you know you might have to share the phone, and make Carbon your secondary to use only when you won't be likely to need to share phone.

That would be one solution.
Since I posted this two days ago, I've experiment with the screen pinning tool, and also I DID successfully add another user account, so switching users should be a good solution.
You'll have to forgive me; I work in IT Security. One just doesn't hand over one's information to another user!!
Isn't there a Carbon thread. Maybe ask Carbon questions in there.
There are app lockers out there like this. What you do is choose an app you want to lock (for example, Gallery) and then you choose when to lock it and how to unlock it.

Want to install a custom dialer on Pixel 4A

Hello guys.
I have been using 4A for about 6 months now. My calling is heavy due to nature of my work. However, I am really disappointed by the dialer which 4A comes with due to following reasons-
1. No unlimited call logs which is a very big bummer. It's such a basic thing any phone maker must provide.
2. Smart search from dialer is as bad as it can be. I'm coming from a Xiaomi phone and Google should really learn a few things how to make a dialer app. The search is billion times better in the latter.
3. Lack of call recording which I can live with but is desirable.
Basically I'm asking if I can install any third party dialer (preferably MiUI) ? I'm ready to root if it's needed.
Please help me. I'm on the verge of going back to my MIUI phone as my main phone just because of this crappy dialer.
PS: I can't go custom ROM way because I don't want to lose stock camera's quality.
Thanks

Try using TruePhone ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hb.dialer.free ). I have call recording and I have never came to a situation where call log was too short - I have checked my favorite contact and I have log since I installed it.
P. S. U have root on my phone, but I am not convinced if it is needed. Try it as IMHO is the best dialer with tons on customization.

Hi,
Can you elaborate on these two?
I ask because if I click the middle "Recents" button at the bottom, the call log is very limited. But if I then click the three dot button in the top right and select "Call History", it will go back very far in time.
Also, what problems are you having with the smart search? Can you mention a couple of examples?

I did check the history and surprisingly found out today that my call records are only till 6th of April from today and then directly to Oct 2020. Don't know how is that possible, but this is what I found.
I'll explain my problem to you.
When I bought this phone, I had imported around 10k call logs records but when I used to check history of numbers I dial frequently, I came to know it's not storing unlimited history. Like the person whom I have called 20 times has only 2 entries in the log.
Until today I didn't know that history between 20 Oct 2020 to April 5, 2021 is missing. I don't have a sane explanation for this.
Regarding smart search, see following scenarios:
It doesn't search if I type keywords which are between the names. Eg name is John, if I type 646, it should show but it doesn't. It always search with first letter only, be it name or surname.
Second case.
I have a name saved called Prathmesh, my dialer always fails to show it. I dial 77284, it shows other relevant search results but not this and when I type next digit, no results at all. In the frequent updates of Google dialer phone app, after one particular update, it started searching but after next update again stopped. This is one example, I can give more.
Third case.
It doesn't search from unsaved numbers. Suppose I vaguely remember I had received a call from a number which had 5555 at last but couldn't exactly remember, there is no way I could find using Google dialer.

Thanks for app suggestion buddy.
It solved almost all of my problems.
Now I can search the way I want, can record calls, and possibly can store unlimited logs.

I was happy with the app but now call recording isn't working.
I have been using drupe dialer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.drupe.app&hl=en_US&gl=US) for many years to address exactly the problems that you have mentioned. You can give it a try. But here also, the inbuilt call recorder is not working with Pixel 4a. It used to work with my older Oneplus X.
