[Q] KitKat or Gingerbread - Frustrated Xperia U owner - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi all, I am currently running a custom lightweight JellyBean ROM on my Xperia U after having used the official ICS update and it making my phone unusable (thanks Sony!)
The phone runs okay 50% of the time on JB, but the rest of the time I get horrendous lag and apps hanging. I can't even answer the phone often because the phone app hangs and the caller has hung up by the time the phone becomes responsive again. Also it seems the longer I have a ROM installed for the slower it gets. And when it is running well I can never type a text at full speed anyway as the auto correct gets confused and goes crazy.
Enough is enough, I need a ROM that actually is usable in day to day life, from what I can see I have two choices, either I go back to Gingerbread and accept that I wont get the modern apps/features/smoothness that comes with Android 4+ or I switch to Kitkat which has supposedly been designed to run well on 512MB devices like the Xperia U.
The apps I use frequently are:
- Opera mini
- Whatsapp
The apps I use occasionally are:
- Camera + album
- Walkman
- Facebook
- Kindle
- Youtube
- Google maps
- Google now (mainly just the reminders, although it is so slow now i tend not to bother now)
- Twitter
What are peoples experiences with Gingerbread vs KitKat for the Xperia U? Which is faster and less prone to hangs? Will Gingerbread run all the apps I currently use? Is there any issue with downgrading to Gingerbread after running JB?
I am really inexperienced when it comes to flashing ROM's so I only want to do this once and get it right
Thanks in advance!

As I can see you are not heavy user. Both Android version will do just fine. But both had their pros and cons. For example GB will be very lightweight and very stable (almost no bugs) but it is very old. Like you already knew not all app support GB anymore so you will have better stability in trade for compatibility. On KK otherwise will be supported by almost every app and have better lib, drivers, eye candy thingy but might had somewhat unsolved bugs. So its up to your choice. But im strongly suggest KK as its now almost bug free.
Btw,dont be afraid to flashing rom. Its really easy. As long as you follow the instruction you will be fine. And maybe someday you will be flashaholic too like me! Lol! ,

Issues with Andoird in the past...

Here is a list of issues I had with Andoird when I last used it (Android ported to X1, currently having X10 Xperia also)
The reason of this thread is to see if Android HAS indeed improved or are we just sipping old wine from a new bottle
Of course hardware specs matter a lot, but I am solely talking about Android.
Issues with Android:
1. Lags (This point is subjective, but it did lag when I was having it and still does sometimes)
2. Random apps start on their own (and slow the system)
3. The internet shuts when I get in and get out of the lift/or any place where there is no connectivity. (Need to switch on airplane mode and then shut it for the internet
services to restart)
4. App launcher crashes Or even Apps sometimes (music, gallery etc) (It does common...)
5. It takes a while to start an application (Any application, music, Gmail etc... again subjective)
6. An OS update usually brings more issues than solves. (Updated the X10 to Gingerbread and I can honestly say, my Froyo was slightly better)
7. Memory card corrupts while connecting/disconnecting from the computer
8. Battery drainer
9. System hang. (happened on X1)
i am a former sgs2 user and i have never had such problems

SGS2 is different, I am talking about the X10 (the one I have used) and x1 (obviously ported so this can be forgiven) but apart from that, I have seen and heard people have lags on the Nexus too.
I have Desire HD and I dont have these problems. Of couse, apps crash but very rarely. even on iOS they crash.
And I cant get why u've started this topic in Razr's forum?

Have you tried any of the v6supercharger scripts by zepplinrox? They reorganize the oom groupings & priorities of the native memory mgmt system and they work for almost any phone.

A little overview on Custom Stable Roms vs Stock 2.1

Helo,
recnetly i have checked few roms and used for some time with stock kernel. I have tried Ginger DX, minicm7 v21. And here what conclution i came to:
Best rom is....stock one 2.1, no matter what features other roms do have still 2.1 is the best.
Why ? here is a lilttle overview what i think minicm7 and most of custom roms have better essential stuff than stock.
Advantages:
New android market
Battery life
New android version 2.3x
Flash Support
Better sound quality on video camera
Disadvantages:
Bad performance
roaming doesnt work properly (in some countries it connects to network in some it does not)
native thetering doesnt work
user interface just looks awful compared to original stock
Photo camera application (picture quality is just bad compared to stock)
Opera browser doesnt work stable
So i just pointed the things whom i think are really essential for a good rom.
Now a little notice about performance...
Dont be fools, do not believe that 2.3 has better performance than Stock.
IT DOES NOT
Only Quadrant scores are higher, but in practise performance is worse!
with same launcher pro and even less icons and widgets on minicm7 the performance is way worse than stock rom. For example if i want to give a call and open contacts i have to wait for a second at least to load contacts application, same with messages unless i kill all the tasks. I dont have this with stock rom. Another notice, if i use lets say Opera browser or Gameboid emulator and then go back to dekstop, widgets and icons always has to be re-drew per new. This doesnt happen on stock. Overal even with killed apps games on 2.3 are running worse then on stock 2.1 (Where is my water? Angry Birds, Gameboid, Snesoid).
So is it really worth to upgrade? I think no it is not worth to upgrade. Unless you die-hard need Flash Support and Video Camera sound. Then yes. For the rest, no i dont think so.

bad performance - sorry but i do tweaks so mine is better than stock
roaming - dont need it
tethering - is there a native tether with stock?
awful interface - maybe but stock is well stock cant be changed
opera browser - mines doing great
I use MiniCM7 Pro V21 (By god Paul) on my phone and I'm just happy, stock user interface is so ugly compared to MiniCM7.
Only think I dont like is the Camera freezes sometimes while recording a video.
A Tribute to Blade Runner
After I discover XDA-developers ....
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe....... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion....... I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate....... All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain...... Time to die......
....Time to back to Stock 2.1......
Sorry, it's only a joke, all opinions are wellcome and very respectables but, after I read your post, this scene of Blade Runner return to my memory.
A little tribute to Bade Runner.....
I think Stock is best rom... No bugs + good performance(i dont think in games )

Maybe, but on stock rom I can't connect via adhoc connection. I share internet connectio via notebook. And on stock rom it is imposible to connect on that type of wifi connection.
Also, I need ultra brightness, what is also weak point for stock rom.
Sent from my U20i using xda premium
Yeah stock dont have usb and wifi tethering but in market u can find aps like EastTether or WifiTether.
And stock have best launcher for this device but I think this launhcer needs modification.I dont like this fact Only 1 widget at screen and no icons at screen.
Only corners

I respect your opinion but I don't agree. Stock from is full of touch bugs, lacks dual touch, native tethering( works now with latest custom gb and ics nAa roms) . Also, we cannot remove some of the bloatware as it is attached to some .apk bundle and we could end in boot loop or even constant force close messages. I forgot to mention that /system has 20 mb only free so laggs are guaranteed... no apps to fat32 option. I tried many times to undervolt my stock roms with apps and .ko files etc. but didn't make it... stock battery life sucks.... gaming experience is cr4p.... I can't remember anything else cause I am on custom built roms many months now.... every opinion is well accepted.

Custom > Stock.
Only if you understand well how the phone works and how to set the phone's settings and features to it's minimum or maximum performance. And also, if you managed to tweak the phone to it's best performance.
Else, Stock is the best and only option for you.
Also @ OP, those disadvantages you pointed out, on the latest stable custom ROMS out there, all of it works fine now. Except ICS, still has work to be done with that version.

Stock is nice but i think the custom rom's have more advantages that cover its disadvantages.
As for me the only disadvantage in custom rom's would be the hopeless battery life.

not really i believe you can use governors in custom roms but not in stock rom. thats why i have custom rom so i can use governors and apps to sd
Prefer custom
I've been using custom Roms for a very long time, now.
I must say that, even though custom roms have some bugs, stock rom has some bugs also. And it lacks some features, which I consider essential.
The most important is the ability of saving apps in SD card. I know (and I've used it) there's link2SD, but I needed to root my device as well. Link2SD was very unstable.
Stock lacks flash and some apps won't run under 2.1.
Battery life? The same.
Stock apps? Great looks, I'll give them that. But some are very basic.
I needed to install some apps that come with custom roms. I prefer to install custom rom.
The main app, to me, is phone/contacts. Stock app is lame.
Will stick to cm7-2.2.0, for now.
Sorry to disagree in every point. I have a x10 mini (not pro).
I couldn't find a single advantage on the stock rom over the custom miniCM7 (2.2.1).
The stock 2.1 rom feels like a slower CPU and GPU, it's sluggish and lags to the touch. I think the interface is OK, with the corner shortcuts and the bigger icons. It was well designed, but I always end up unintentionally arrainging icons in the menus and the corner shortcuts because of the lag. Applications are painfully slow, including the dialer. As a windows computer: when I fresh install (factory reset) the mini, it's fairly responsive, but as soon as I install half a dozen apps it gets sluggish again.
Bad performance?
-no, much better responsiveness and performance with miniCM7 even with lots of apps installed.
roaming doesnt work properly (in some countries it connects to network in some it does not)
-This one I can't tell
native thetering doesnt work
-stock has none.
user interface just looks awful compared to original stock
-matter of taste maybe. I like the new UI better all the way.
Photo camera application (picture quality is just bad compared to stock)
-Maybe in older versions? this one works better, and now I can have instagram.
Opera browser doesnt work stable
-It works fine here.
I am a little dazzled because, in my x10 mini, things are about opposite. Everything is just smoother with the new rom, and the old rom fails me exactly in the way the new rom fails to you: it's unresponsive, slow, annoying, glitchy. Maybe it's just personal taste, or something is different between our phones.

Neo V Official Sony ICS 4.1.A.0.562 fw bug report thread

First of all I know there is a thread for feed back of new ICS fw,but instead bug reporting that thread contains more pleas, hatred towards Sony doubt devs from Sony will keep on reading it.
So in this thread please post the bugs you've found so far with the fw.So we can direct this to Sony devs & if they care(they did asked opinions, bug reposrts about fw in Sony forums so I assume they do care) they will try to fix them
So I'll start
+.Very choppy video recording.
+.Big battery drains
+.Loads of older games crash after 30 seconds
+.No wifi direct
+.System is kinda slow and lag comparing to ginger bread
+.Not great ram management, phone sort of freezes when using more than few apps at the same time.
+.Home launcher lags comparing to ginger bread ones
+.It takes 3-4 seconds for Dialer to load :/
+.Didn't had face unlock after the update.Had to flash gapps to get it
+.Keyboard's keys are kinda smaller and not that easy to type
+.All the setted contact pictures are gone from contacts and only thumbnails are left :/
So far I've found.please post the bugs you found and help to get a better ICS fw
you will get face unlock when you open google play.
it's silently updating.
no need to flash gapps.

Games are rather matter of game developers not compatible with ICS I think.
this my problem :
1. Battery drain. If i used wifi, and switch it off...battery more faster decreased, have to reboot phone for make battery back to normal...
2. Dialer slow loading... am i used phone with 600Mhz???
I wonder, why there is no power notification widget in this update...
My issues:
A little battery drain, but ROM is recently installed so I will give time to stabilize.
Wifi is buggy. Takes ten minutes connecting one meter from the router. Wpa.
Any times takes half hour... And in other routers connects instantly.
Can be night elf kernel?
Notification led doesn't work for missed calls! I searched in the phone's menu but there is no option to enable it!

In GB there was an additional option to completely disable USB action. MTP/Mass storage + "Disable usb".
Browser kept crashing and crashing.
Problems with Google Picasa Web synchronization. The albums from my picasa account just don't appear when I want to upload new files. There's a problem with facebook-google accounts synchro.
Some apps shows 'segmentation error' when trying to move them to the phone (system apps2sd). Cleaning data, uninstalling and installing back doesn't help. Link2SD or other App2SD from the market does not help - a little strange problem, probably new installation could help
Sometimes app drawer seems laggy - in comparison to GB, which had quicker response
Poor memory management - GB seemed to run more user apps at the same time quite smoothly
That is all after one day of heavy exploring by my daugther
Hmm how its possible that the ics not running smooth by all??
Mine is ok, no lag in menu and homescreen scrolling (i use the xperia s home now) no lag when i open settings etc, app2sd is working fine on ics no problems (i use app2sd pro 2.50 the newest one) no camera problems no fc's or anything else, its all f*cking amezing and fast

When you install it as a clean install it is faster, but when u update it via pc companion or flash without flashing user data it tends to get slower. So best way to move to ICS(or any other rom in that manner) is to do a fresh clean install

This is true people. YOU HAVE TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY!
The first time I updated it, it was buggy as hell!
I then did a clean install (repair phone on pc companion) then it was smooth running since then. Memory management is amazing, no scroll lag, UI is great, multi tasking is better... I dont know about u guys but im likin it!
OT: is the UI on this is different drom nordic? It seems that they aee hating the UI but I see no fault on mine.

Official ICS Bug Report
Using this firmware for past 3 days now,
1. A little laggy Interface than GB, but using a third party Launcher fixes it till some extend.
2. Video recording quality is not as in GB. Also is choppy.
3. Gyroscope doesnt work in Maps. Checked with Compass Application works flawlessly, not in Maps.
I might switch back to GB soon...
Its not as if im not fond of ICS... But for me, its still a bit RAW. I really like the UI, functions, etc however its a bit buggy on the 3 main tasks wich I use my phone(Wifi, camera and temple run)... Untl these can be fixed, I thnk im staying with gb first. Btw, I find ics not to be laggy on its stock state however, once u install mods fr system ui and others, it kinda lags a bit. Too bad.

Does this ROM not support multi taking? When I played a song and opened another app (agent dash) the song stops playing and when I exit the app It goes to the home page and the launcher reloads. The same thing happens even when I browse.
Am I the only one who has this problem? :\

Unfortunately this is case, although depending on what apps you need on your phone you may be able to get a more usable rom by removing things you don't want such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.
I have v3 of that rom and have removed a lot of the apps that came pre-installed as I simply don't want them. Also, certain kernels will help, (such as the experimental v8 kernel) and can also be configured to use zram which will help slightly, although it's not perfect. Even with all of the above I regularly get launcher redraws after web browsing or playing a game.
... there's a reason Sony didn't release Jelly Bean on our device.
The good news is that some real progress is being made on various versions of Cyanogenmod, so while Sony may have given up on us, it's not time to go out and buy a new phone quite yet!

To be honest I'm a big fan of Sony's UI. My other half has a Samsung Galaxy and although I will say that it feels much more fluid than my phone to use, I'd still rather have my phone, just working better! Such a shame that Sony underspec'd the hardware, but then this is nothing new -- I've had three other Sony (Ericsson) phones and they've all been underspec'd. You'd have thought by now I'd have learned my lesson!

[Q] What is the Best Android 4 or upper ROM for Legend?

I'm running B 0.8.4 Rom by BlaY0 on my HTC Legend for so long.
It is a very good Rom with no problem at all.
I want to change it to Android 4 ! but there are plenty of them here, each of them has some issues,
Could you please introduce the best STABLE Rom which its Android version is 4 or upper for HTC Legend?
Thank you in advance
I'm using Zeubea's CM10 rom (4.1.2). It's pretty stable and works great, I almost never have problems. Not sure if it's the best or most stable JB rom for Legend though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33684845
That said it is a big rom so you may need to prune some useless system apps. There are lots that are just junk, I deleted 20-30 apps haha. Lots of room now and runs much smoother with less overhead.
I also recommend NOT flashing the gapps Zeubea provides. Just get them from Play. Some of the latest Jelly Bean apps are almost useless for me, like Maps. I installed an old version—I think the one from Blay0's rom in fact. Works much better. I find the stock browser way too heavy, too. Camera app is way too heavy, deleted. But all these can be replaced with stuff from Play.
Remember too that JB apps are bigger in general so RAM will be limited. Just opening Settings eats 30MB.
JB roms may also trash your wifi and gps. I had problems with both but it's working ok now. Legend wifi was never legendary though haha.
Anyway, just try it!
What you probably should look at is, what base do those "other roms" use, I think you will find more often than not they are based on zeubea's roms anyway, with some tweaks here and there. The op really should tell you in the thread so just have a read...

GPS problems:
You need to edit /system/etc/gps.conf
Use a root explorer like Root Browser to go to that file, and open with RB text editor. Or better yet, copy it to your computer and edit it there.
Change the file so it contains the information found here http://www.modaco.com/topic/331446-mod-all-roms-gps-fix/
Remove the # from the NTP_SERVER closest to where you live. If you want to add more servers you can look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200089
Removing apps:
If you have Link2SD (and you should!!!) you can try freezing stuff for a few days and then if nothing goes wrong, delete it.
As for what to delete, certainly the stock mail program, the CM file browser (USELESS), music app... I sorted by size and deleted anything that didn't sound useful / critical. I also deleted the AOSP keyboard. It's good but doesn't have Chinese which is a must for me. I just installed another keyboard from Play. If you delete those few things your system space will free up a bit and be more than enough to give it some breathing room. I'm not sure you need more than 20-30 MB free (or any free at all, I'm kinda talking out my ass a bit haha). But it seems to stand to reason that system apps need room to store data, cache, etc., and if they don't things will get choked up real quick.
What does matter is freezing useless apps and utilities that load automatically and sit in RAM. Legend RAM is very limited and while it's true that unused RAM is wasted RAM and that task killers are worse than useless, having stuff load automatically and keep themselves in RAM is just taking up space for useful apps that will use that RAM, without question.
That said anyone with a better understanding is more than welcome to jump in!
Don't talk to me about gps my threads on the topic are enough. Basically gps either works or it doesn't, if it doesn't your out of luck my friend!
