[Q] Remapping capacitive keys - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to remap the long press on the menu button on my S5 by editing the .kl files.
Managed to get single press to open menu, but long press refuses to do anything other than open first the google search, then samsung's search apps.
EDIT: Partially solved, nova launcher was set to open search, now it only opens the samsung one. Still doesnt open recent apps.
Xposed framework button remapper manages to do it, so I know it's possible, but there's no hapatic feedback
All suggestions welcome!

[Q] adding items to search button

Surprised I can't find anything about this one via google.
Is there a way to add items to the long-press of the search button and/or change the function of the single press.
Preferably, I'd like to change it, so when I single press the search button a shortcut of my choice is launched instead (in my case, a single click to open a Folder Organizer folder).
I have been doing this to launch task manager since long long time
Here is what you need to do:
1. Install launchkey app
2. Launch the app, and select the app you want it to open up
3. Long press search key, and map it to launch key permanently
4. Long press and it will launch the app mapped to launchkey
I found Launchkey this morning, bought & refunded it. When I tried to pick a custom app it didn't do anything at all. Custom menu worked though.
Sadly, even if Custom app worked, they don't allow a shortcut - just apps
Playing with ButtonRemapper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464). Doesn't allow shortcuts either, but at least one can map to Camera or Phone button instead of search. Oddly, mapping it to Phone caused the long press to activate Vlingo (or something like that). Dunno if I'm keeping, but will mess around.
Considering the customization of Android, I'm very surprised the default O/S doesn't let you map the button & long press to anything - or at least an app in the market!
It does; it allows to map based on application that tries to make use of it. On my phone, it was popping up 6-7 options along with launch key, with go sms pro, voice command, voice search, etc being some of them. The app needs to be coded to make use of it. Android supports this feature.

[Q] Question: touchkey shortcuts

I've searched everywhere, but didn't find a solution for the following:
when you hold the bottom left hardware touchkey you'll get a popup browser with google search.
And if you hold the center key a window appears with recent programs.
Is there a way too change these shortcuts into something of my own choice?
My s2 is rooted, so maybe there is an app that will do the trick?
Like you, I'd love to remap the menu key to home and home key to menu. We use the home key much more often than menu and it's harder to press a physical key. However, I haven't found such a mod yet.
Remapping keys
I am looking for a way to remap long press of back key (i.e. hold down right key) to something else. Haven't found anything yet.
Now I am using SwipeSwitcher - I configured top left swipe to run Quicker, top right swipe to run a task switcher (I am using PreHome), bottom right swipe to run recent apps (I couldn't find an app to run ICS recent apps, I installed Nova Launcher and assigned the swipe action to its recent apps shortcut).

[Q] jellybean on phones w/ physical buttons.

Hoping y'all could clear something up for me.
On devices with onscreen keys, the key layout goes
Back, Home (longpress for Google now), Multitask
On devices with physical keys, as we well know, whe have back, home, and menu (sometimes with search, longpressed to voice search) in a pretty unpredictable order.
But how would you activate Google now on devices with these keys? Longpressing home is multitask.... so is multitask moved out a different key (long press menu?) Or does Google now move?
The most logical choice would be assigning it to longpress search (replacing voice search) but a lot of phones *coughgalaxysphonescough* don't HAVE the search button......
the key settings are part of the launcher settings, nothing to do with the core of android.

Click to collapse
i know how android keys work, and that's simply not true.
key actions are assigned via system files located in /system/user/keylayout/ or /system/usr/keylayout/
the launcher has nothing to do with that.

[Q] Is there any way to remap multi-window to the menu button?

Pretty straightforward here. In looking for some way to remap the long press back button to a long press menu button to bring up the multi-window sidebar. I think it just makes a bit more sense than back, to prevent accidental exits, because nothing bad really happens if you accidentally press menu. Maybe an Xposed framework module? There had got to be a simple way to do this. I've tried some hardware button remapping apps, but they only have general Android functions in them, no proprietary app stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Reppaping Menu Button

I would like to remap the capacitive menu button to the recent apps switcher (default long press of the home button)
and then remap the LONG press of the menu button to the menu function (I need the ability to use the menu button when within the stock samsung apps like messaging, because they use fixed layouts and their apps are designed without the menu overflow.)
also my question is would apps still detect the phone as having a hardware menu button? I would like to be able to have apps have the menu button and not rely on the hardware.
then maybe since I would no longer need the home button long press possibly remap that to kill the current app? (that is not as important but just a side note)
I have looked EVERYWHERE and can not find a viable way to do this on the stock rom. thanks

Mk2 4.3 using stock rom, xposed framework installed, and Root access.
