I got tired of taking off my case every time i charge my phone,.... so i did alil bit of modification and i thought I'd share with you guys and maybe find it helpful,...
ok,... the case that i have is a Ringke FUSION Xperia Z2 Bumper Case,... i also have a Spigen Ultra Fit which like a lot,... but I've been using the Ringke FUSION coz i think it has the best protection all around,....
your going to need a Dremel for this modification or something similar
1.) your going to need to open the Sony DK36 Magnetic Charging Dock (don't forget to remove the adapters that goes into the charging port slot),... once it's open,... your going to want to raise the magnetic port so it can reach the cellphones port when you have the case / bumper case on,.... i used a 3M double sided tape (which is 1.90mm thick) so the magnetic port can be raised permanently (as you on the picture) (and don't forget to remove the USB cable while working on it)
2.) this is where you need the Dremel or something similar,..... make your marking on your case on where your going to cut out the hole,..... i used the Dremel with a grinding tool with a small tip,.... remember to start small and slowly make your way out (don't forget to remove the phone off the case when you start griding / cut),.... use the magnetic charging port as reference to how much you should grind out / cut out,.... every now and then test fit the case to the magnetic port charger,....
3.) by now,.... your magnetic charging dock should be closed and back together,..... your not going to need any of the adapters anymore,.... try testing the phone with the case to the magnetic charging dock,.... it should fit and charge your phone already,... if not,... grind alil bit more on case so that it clears the charging port completely,..... if that still doesn't work,... you may need to open the DK36 Magnetic Charging Dock again and raise the port alil bit more,....
4.) this part is optional,.... but i did this mod to give the phone more back support,.... i found a old CD case that i wasn't using and cut out a small piece,.. about the same size as the back panel,... grind the plastic until it fits on the back panel just right,.... i used a 3M painters tape to keep the plastic piece attached to the dock,.... (the 3M double sided tape was to thick and wouldn't allow the charging port the join,.... thats why i used a thinner tape on the back of the small plastic piece,.... just roll the tape together to make it a double sided tape)
(you'll see on the picture how the small plastic piece looks like with the charging dock)
Opening the dock
How can we open the dock? It's made of so premium plastic that I am not able to open it. Can you please post a video on how to open the dock? I have a flip cover which just uses the magnet to stick but does not charge because the golden pins are not able touch each other. Just write a proper step by step on how to open it or post a video.

i kinda had a hard time opening the dock to,... and learned my lesson,... so here's what you gotta do,...
on the bottom dock,... you would see a grip tape around the surface of the dock (it helps keep the dock from moving around the table)
there are 2 screws holding the dock together,.... and they are located on the side where the grip tape is at,..... so its actually covered underneath the grip tape (the middle section of the side grip tape) just remove a small portion of the grip tape so the screws can be revealed,.....and just remove it with a small screwdriver,.... (use the first picture that i posted as reference to get an idea on where the screw mount is at)

yeah i saw that case,.... i was thinking about getting it but i didn't really want a flip cover case,... while it gives you protection on the LCD screen,... it also has some down side like holding it up like a book when taking a picture,...

You are the best. After reading and following your instructions million a times finally I could achieve what I desired. I just made a few arrangements from my side as my cover is the ultra slim 0.3 mm which required only a small amount of tweaking.
You can see in the pic below that I used the plastic in both the ends with double sided tape because the Z2 used slip out of the dock sometimes.
Again a very big thank you for solving this issue for me.i was a bit afraid that what would happen if my charging flap came out. But you solved it for me. Keep up the good work

With my MDAIII piel frama case (same type) I ended up trimming the plasticy keyboard cover to stop it getting caught and getting frayed and torn. Does this one look like the same will be needed or is it a better fit.

One thing I don't like about it is that the plastic seems not attached very well on the right side...and the reset button is not accessible.

Yep, have this case too and agree with all comments and especially pain that the reset button is covered - they really didn't need a cut out over the IR port as noone uses it thesedays anyway...
The case is *almost* very good but I think the leather needs to go a touch further round at top and bottom i.e. towards the USB/charger port, and so pull the plastic foil tighter across the keyboard - mine's seems more loose than day 1...
Still a very impressive case but not 100% sorted (yet). Which reminds me; the cut out for the scroll wheel is a bit off on mine (should be 2-3mm lower down)...

I also think that the cut out for the scroll wheel should be 1 - 2mm lower. But i notice that the plastic foil will get loose if the PDA is heated. If I remove the case and let it cool down, the plastic foil will get tighten again.
How convenient it is to use the device in this case as a phone?
Not that good when used as a phone as you have to bend the case so the front doesn't flap into ur face.
And just the w/e the plastic belt holder fell apart as I was getting into a car.
It looks like this is no-go for me.
To further comment, the micro SD Slot of the PF case actually touches the screen of your pda thus causing it to be turned on for the entire should you not turn it off via power button.
Hey guys - does anyone know of any after-market battery covers for the HD that would be metal - specifically for the purpose of attaching to a magnet? I purchased one of those magnetic "cradle" kits that is basically just a big magnet you stick onto whereever, with a little metal slab that you stick onto the back of your phone. Then - you can just stick the phone up close to the magnet and it sticks - a perfect low-profile car cradle. The metal slab that sticks to the back of the phone is thin - it doesn't really stick out any further than the camera housing - but it still isn't as sleek as just the phone by itself. I thought a replacement battery cover that sticks to the magnet would be perfect. So... does anyone know of any? Or perhaps a vendor that could custom-machine one?

I made my own magnetic car holder solution. Didn't cost much and can't imagine it work better than this...
I can't see what you've done there... It looks like some sort of metal on the battery itself, so that the regular cover works fine... What is that? How is it affixed?

Ohh! Good point! I would have completely forgotten about them and then been really screwed - I actually have to run my mobile through an X-ray every day at work... That could be an issue. Oh well - back to the drawing board...

I really wouldn't recommend directly attaching the phone to strong magnetic sources. It may impede the functionality, reduce or affect the battery operation, interfere with the many antennas in the phone, not to mention run the risk of corrupting memory sticks etc?
The phone itself isnt that heavy so probably wouldnt need a strong magnet, but you'd want to use something quite strong just to hold it in place. Imagine driving over a speed bump or pot hole which dislodges the phone and makes it go sliding across your dash board and out of an open window. (worst case scenario..)
If youre looking for a quick release holder I would recommend something that you clip the phone into like those hip holsters and then find one that has a socket connection to a window mount.

I used the same razors and the same magnet (This one) with my SE P1i for 1½ year without any issues.
And the phone doesn't move 1 mm even driving over the biggest speed bump in Sweden.

I honestly couldn't think of one thing that a magnet could have an effect on in the phone, certainly not the memory. The only type of memory that is affected by magnets are HDD (because the data on the disks is stored magnetically) and credit cards (once again, data stored magnetically). However, RAM/ROM is completely different and relies on gates and latches to store data, neither affected by magnet. Not to mention even if it did have an HDD (like old school mp3 players/iPod) it would take a strong magnet (mainly electromagnet) to corrupt the memory. Likewise, I can't foresee it having any affect on the battery or interfering with the antenas (unless you're using some super strong magnet....which you're likely not)
One of the only build quality problems i have with the Touch HD is that the battery cover creaks when pressed in certain spots.
To revive this topic, does anybody know of an actual aftermarket battery cover for this phone, preferably metal?
I searched google to find no results. It seems like it would be a good idea to make these
You can also shave the inside of the battery cover with a small sander. Than add ANY kind of magnet that will than fit inside the cover. The plastic cover is THICK so you can shave enough for some type of magnet.
I would also like a metal/rubber etc back cover. The quality of the orginal cover is driving me nuts..

I recently purchased a HD2 on eBay. It was supposed to come immaculate but unfortunately there are dents on almost all corners. Rest if perfect.
I saw on eBay some chinese sellers selling new housing + battery covers for ~25 USD. So why not replacing the housing then? I decided to give it a try.
Well I have to say that it really did not work like in the videos I saw on youtube. I removed the 4 screws under the battery cover, gently pressed the back of the LCM outward but it really refused to pop out (no even half an inch). I discarded the pry tool (a very thine credit card actually) and even tried using a suction cup on the digitizer to pull it backwards but same problem. It's like the LCM/chassis was glued on the bezel. Phone has never been disassembled before (white sticker and void screw were still both there).
This is strange because in all the videos I saw the LCM/middle chassis was clearly not glued on the bezel. It immediately popped out a bit then you could start prying (and praying!). Ok I know that in those videos usually the phone has already been disassembled before so other attempts require less force to do it again for the recording.
My questions now to all the people who managed to do this. Did this require so much force? Is there a change and is HTC now glueing this part the LCM/middle chassis to the bezel? Any suggestion? Where is for you the best place to insert the pry tool when you start?

Try flexing the plastic bezel above the earphone outwards a little while applying slight pressure to the sticker area on the back. There're two notches above which locks the frame to the pcb.

Ok I managed to do it.
This required clearly some force on the pry tool (actually I used two plastic cards : a very thin and flexible one than a credit card). I started the operation above the earphone area.
Applying pressure on the sticker area was stresfull because the LCD immediately reacted to the pressure (hence a risk to break it or damage it). Best was to put two fingers on the sticker area to help the LCM module to pop out but with (almost) no pressure.
I had a doubt and now that I managed to remove the housing it's gone. The antennas (those white stuff you see in both top corners and at the bottom) are glued to the housing.
I prefer to spend a few more bucks to take a housing which has those antennas already in.

i had a similar frustrating experience to yours in trying to snap the back off the chassis on my hd2 which had a fingerprint on the *inside* of the camera cover glass which i needed to open it to get at.
it sure looks easy in that HTC disassembly video on youtube but the tech there is using a sort of plastic hooked tool for the job, which i didn't have, so i used my thumbnail instead in the same place (the upper left corner, looking at the phone from the front) and it took me a good 20 minutes of applying what seemed like unreasonable pressure to my touchscreen and nearly tearing my nail off to get it to pop out.
those snap-tabs the electronics manufacturers use to hold cases together -- even when they also have screws to do the job -- are one of my all-time pet hates. i usually end up breaking them off.
I will be doing the same thing soon. So the housing you removed has antennas glued to it ?. Thanks for that, I will try get new housing with antenna together if possible.

It does come out but with a lot of force but pry the glue lose around the whole chassis first by sliding a thin card right ot the bottom of the case and slowlyu move and pry it upwards with 2 cards one on the top and other on the right after you losend the glue. the top has the wifi adapter n that so be careful bottom has usb so mite break.
honestly i would say don't bother replacing it and just get a gel case or something to hide the damage. there's a high chance of messing the digitizer up and would just cause you more trouble of taking the whole phone apart bit by bit and trust me the components are tiny so easily breakable especially the ribbon cables they decided to use. my honest opinion don't

yep they are white thin bits glued to the top portion of the case. wifi on left and phone on right if i remember. its been quite a while though since i took my old hd2 apart
Now that I know how to do this I will be easier next time.
Yes antennas are glued in the housing so best is to buy a housing which has antennas already in.
Important note : the antenna which is at the bottom of the housing exists in two different versions : EU or US so check with the seller which one he sells.

i don't believe it's glued. as far as i can see the the case is held together with screws and plastic interlocking tabs. the trick is to get the latter to unclip.

I got my new housing and the replacement went fine. For those who could be interrested I bought it on ebay from the seller forceviewer_uk in China. Everything went perfect so I can recommend this guy.
Curious if anyone is using the Palm Touchstone wireless charging mod for the SGS3. I got everything for a Palm Pre, touchstone, cable, etc.. Did the mod which was stupid easy... but the buldge of the back cover is driving me nuts. I have no idea how to make it more flush again. There is ZERO chance of putting an case on here now, for 1 it seems like the charging signal wouldn't be strong enough... and the buldge would absolutely prevent it.
Any help would be appreciated.
BTW: I used super thin 24 gauge wire out of a cable (like a usb cable/printer cable) to go from the palm pre charging pads to the pins of the sgs3.
I used the palm pixi's back for my mid. It is thinner that the pre's so there is less bulge.
Edit: I also used copper foil/tape to make my connections. I don't know if that would reduce bulge or not though.

I read somewhere the pixi back was thinner but I read that after I ordered the pre back. I didn't have any copper foil tape so I used wire from a usb cable, and if I did use foil tape it seems like I would need something to push down into the phone connectors as they seem a tiny bit recessed.
Don't get me wrong, everything works, and charging works, but the bulge is noticeable and there is no way I could use a case back now. Glad I got the whole body Zagg invisible shield. :thumbup:
How did you address the phone connectors being deep inside? What did you use to make your foil tape touch the leads in the phone? I just kind of pushed the wires in there and used a little rape to prevent shorts.

On the Sprint model there is no sim card. If you cut a square out of the internal cover to the right of the microSD card you have a nice little space to hide the circuit board that causes the buldge. I just posted a question- where to buy the internal plastic cover? I don't want to risk screwing up my original.. BTW I used copper tape. On the pixie back I soldered the tape to the leads. For the phone connection I cut the tape too long and rolled it up to the spot it needed to be to make contact with the S3 contacts.
I have the touchstone and palm charging back. Is it possible to do this mod without soldiering the GS3?

I think I could probably get the bulge down a little, but I'm not sure it would make a lot of difference... I guess I could always just buy a pixi back and try again? or just wait for Sept and get the samsung kit.
I had read that the samsung kit will charge when the phone is relatively close by - I read 2 meters, but that doesnt sound right - that would be like 6ft... I would settle for 1 ft. The touchstone has to be RIGHT on it... If I had an otterbox case, I am 99% sure the magnetics wouldn't catch and I doubt think the charging field would work, because I can hold it just above the reach of the magnets and no charge. Touch it to the touchstone and BINGO.
Hi just got myself a DK30 docking station. I have a case and two tempered glasses (front and back) installed, and its having a hard time fitting into the dock's tiny gap. It fits into the wider adapter without the case but its too wide. Have you guys come across with this problem or have a solution to this?

I took the cable out of dock, the magnet is really weak but i only use it for overnight charging so it works great for me. You can also try to remove the space thats in the dock and put phone directly in

I have a magnetic cable too but it's so lousy it only works in specific angles. I cannot move the phone at all while charging.
I tried that too but the gap is even wider the phone will not stay still
Fixed it by sticking a scotch tape on the wider adaptor. The gap is filled by the tape perfectly
