[Q] Update 4.3→4.4 without wiping? - AOKP Q&A

Hi there,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus maguro running aokp_maguro_jb-mr2_nightly_2013-10-31. I think it’s now really time to upgrade to KitKat.
Can I do this without wiping userdata partition? If not, can I at least restore a full Titanium Backup?

[Q] Android Upgrades without wiping /data

Hi,
I would be very interested to know if I could upgrade my ROM without completely wiping /data. My only idea would just to be to backup /data before upgrading so I could just throw everything back on when I was done. I'm going to guess this is not possible, but just thought I would give it a shot. Thanks.
Hi
you mean what kind of Upgrades ? I upgade CM7.1 every week without wiping data
So like, lets say i wanted to go from cyanogenmod 7 to cyanogenmod 8...is there a way i could do that without wiping /user?

As long as the base OS is not a huge jump then upgrading custom roms is not always needed. If the OS version changes it is suggested due to possible code changes that effect settings and save data. TIBU gives you the best of both. Doing a full wipe to make sure no left over bugs and restoring your user apps and data. You do have to reset up your system settings but once it become habit you do it without thinking. Lol
I guess the root of the issue is the extremely large amount of applications I install on my device, it's a pain to re-download them, and it definitely does make sense to just be able to write over the existing ROM if there was not an extreme amount of changes.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Rooting will not wipe your phone. Who told you that? What's your ROM?

Please provide answers to the following questions:
1.What's your ROM details?
2.What kind of data are you interested in having up?
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
You don't need root to make full copy of your data; even not rooted phone has /data partition mounted as r/w (beacuse if it would have been mounted as r/o, you couldn't modify your phone). Logical? :>
Rooting does not wipe your data.
[1] If you're on Gingerbread (2.3.3 - 2.3.6), flash CF-Root for your firmware. You won't lose a thing.
[2] If you're on Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3 - 4.0.4), you have two options.
OPTION 1
Download ADB, and run this command:
adb backup /all
This will do a full backup of your device. Use adb restore backup.ab to restore to the backup.
OPTION 2
Flash Siyah for your firmware.

[Q] Can I update a custom rom without wiping?

Hi,
Currently I have a Samsung Galaxy S III with the Android Revolution HD 9.0.0 and I want to upgrade to version 10.0.0 which is the current version. But I dont want to wipe my data to upgrade.
The reason for this is because even though i've backed up everything using titanium backup, I have a layout which I like and lots of other settings.
Is this possible?
Thanks.

Yes you can but if you hit problems you must wipe .
If you are currently running an ICS custom rom and the update is to a JB cumstom rom by the same maker then yes you still need to do a wipe.
But if you did a nandroid backup first before updating you could always try flashing the update without wiping but it could cause problems.
The devs always say to do a full wipe so that there are no problems
Hope this helped

Dont agree other wise we all have wiped phones when JB updates .

Usually they don't say full wipe but wipe cache and wipe dalvik .
Some custom roms will wipe above anyway .
My way on a new rom is to format cache and system in recovery only .
Means i just install on top of my data a new system .
But yes i have Nandroid and TB backup always and yes i am prepared if need be to go back to a stock rom after wiping the lot .
Yes i do flash a lot of roms and no i don't have many problems .

If you want to save your home screen just back up the touchwiz app and restore data to your new rom if you have to wipe

Thanks for your help!
So you say that if I do a backup of all apps in TitaniumBackup and restore it after wipe it'll be ALL the same?
Like I never wiped?
Anyone?

CMIIW, in theory, yes. Although in my experience some apps/games data failed to load. But in most cases it gets the job done after flashing to a new rom, which needed you to wipe everything.
Yes applications go, but the data sometimes ne.Lépe every transition from ICS need to JB, download data again.
And can I restore data only from TitaniumBackup?

Regarding the layout, if you have nova launcher you can export your settings and restore after a flash of a new rom..

Big IF .

Don't have Nova Launcher- didn't like it.
I guess I'll just wipe cache then flash the new version ROM and hope for the best (after backups of course).

You can backup just the apps or apps+data. Therefore you too can restore your data only (if you already have that particular apps installed). Try it mate, titanium backup rules :good:

[Q] Liquid Smooth RC2 problem

Hi guys,
so i'm pretty new to this rooting/cfw installation, I "updated" to liquid smooth's RC2 jelly bean rom via a dirty flash (didn't know i had to have a data wipe...) I don't really want to lose all my data so is it safe to flash back to RC1 or am i required to data wipe and then flash to RC2 (giving it a shot) or RC1?
thanks for your help!
ps. running on the i9305
pps. would backup with cwm and restore work in backing up my data (apps, contacts, etc...) and then restore only those things ie. not restoring back the operating system just the info?

Samsung galaxy 10.1 storage problem - please help

Hey. I have a Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 running aokp on 4.12 and when I go to download an app or game onto my tablet, it states that the storage is full and I need to clear some memory, however when looking into the storage information, my videos, photos, games, and apps only equals up to like 5GB out of a built in 16GB.
HELP
This is a screenshot of my settings if it helps. Please let me know if anything else may assist and am not trying to wipe, and but if I had to I am trying to retain all my info and restore it back onto my tab without restoring the problem
Hi, my friend!
I think that your partitions are messed up, because the picture shows that only 123MB is left on your sdcard. restocking using Odin will help, if you don't mind losing your data, of course. you can backup your data before restocking, though...
some same case has happened to me: I was running stock ICS, then flashed Ubuntu touch, and that repartiitoned my tab, I then flashed paranoid CM 10.1 ROM and now I have to erase data that won't be shown from my device using ADB...

I'm slightly noobish in such and was wondering if you had suggestions to a thread or steps on indicating how to keep my information while fixing the problem

1. pull all your critical data off of /data/media as best you can (you can do this in CWM using 'adb pull data/media/' or boot in to android and use MTP, or backup your apps with titanium backup and no data will be lost. (STORE ALL YOUR BACKUPS ON YOUR PC OR YOU'LL ALSO WIPE YOUR BACKUPS & DATA)
2. wipe all your /data in CWM or Stock Recovery
3. check if your partitions are fixed now (most likely, you'll have ~13 Gb free memory)
4. move your backups and data back to your tablet and restore it
Sweet. I have not tried it yet but thanks a lot guys. I will post up later on the final outcome lol
