[Q] Root Permission Gone! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here it goes!
I have this phone, a Cherry Mobile Aeon [ full specs: please find on google. Can't post links yet, apparently. ], and rooted it. It rooted successfully the first time ( with usb debugging enabled and everything. ) and so, as idiotic as I am, I installed CF3D on a JB phone so it ended up bootlooping. And so I data/factory reset it by STOCK RECOVERY then I tried recovering it by ADB but then, everytime I type the su command, it always says UI CONNECT - TIMED OUT or something like that.
And so I've searched Google on why is that happening and found out that it prompts if the device is unrooted!
Now I can't root it back cause I don't have USB Debugging enabled. And I can't get it to the service center because they said that they don't have the software for this phone yet! WHICH IS VERY IDIOTIC!
Please halp.

dont worry
cf3d creates a backup zip which can be flashed if you get bootloop simply boot to cwm recovery and then flash the zip it will be on /sdcard/ something related to cf3d.zip

That's my problem. Since my phone is kinda new on the market and a very remote brand for that matter, I haven't been able to find a CWM that would be compatible on my phone. Which sucks.
And also, I haven't seen that back-up you are saying. I think it is stored on the internal sdcard. :/ Which I cannot access, obvs.

As I was saying, I am only rooted, no cwm, no way of flashing and since I am an idiot. I didn't have back up too. Can you suggest an easy way on porting CWMs though?

ok so i got my replacement thunderbolt and tried to use the 3 step root tool on here and i think something went wrong. i made it to step 3, it says s off and seemed ok. i rebooted, tried to fix permissions to test and it failed. now all i get is the HTC white boot screen and thats it. i can go into bootloader (the screen with hboot, recovery, etc) and i can load up recovery but when i try to do a restore (backup from the old phone) i get an error and it fails. is it screwed? what can i do to correct this? thanks guys!

If you can get into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING (data/cache/dalvik). Then mount USB and put a rom on your SD. Flash that. If you tried to fix permissions BEFORE you installed a ROM, then you kinda skipped a step mate.
DO NOT RERUN THE ROOT METHOD. IF you have S-OFF, jut flash a ROM

thank you for the quick reply! so there is some hope for this thing then, woohoo!
yes i have wiped everything you mentioned. how does one mount usb from that menu? from within recovery? i saw a usb option on that (is it called bootloader?) is that what your speaking of?
now as a rom i DO have the gingerjane rom from jcase on there somewhere, is that safe to flash on there to fix this? thanks again!
If you have access to recovery (as you said you do) just load it, wipe, and flash any Thunderbolt rom you put on your sdcard (or already have in your case). Whether the rom you flash will fully works or not depends on whether it is compatible with your current radio.
But as long as you have access to recovery, you are set.
it booted! thank you both.
now im positive the root failed but it says s-off and superuser does show in the app drawer. im gonna try to d/l rom manager since its not on here anymore and see if it works.
if root failed am i safe to do the three step process again?
just don't flash roms with Rom Manager. It's known to cause problems with the Thunderbolt..

Not sure what "3 step process" you are referring to but I'm gonna say no.
You have recovery. You can clearly flash roms. The roms contain Superuser.apk and su binaries which means THEY are rooted. Flash a good copy of a rooted rom from recovery and you will have working SU.
If that means you have to download another copy of a rom and put it on your sdcard then do it. Point is, roms are "rooted" not the phone. You can't "root" something that doesn't have an OS. Common misconception but I'm leaving it at that.
Everything is working great now, thank you all for your guidance and support. Love my android community. Can't thank you enough.

[Q] Force Close Loop. How can I fix this?

I haven't downloaded anything recently, I literally just picked up my phone after I woke up and I got a message saying "the application tasks provider has stopped working unexpectedly" and it gives me the option to force close. When I close it, a similar message pops up for email, messaging, social hub, tw launcher, facebook and it keeps going on and on without giving me a chance to use the phone. Do you guys know what I can do? I would be extremely grateful if you could help me out.

Bwahahahaa ;-) Gold.
Yes i've tried that. I've take the battery pack, memory card and sim card out, then replaced them but the loop keeps occuring. It's gotta be more of a software issue and that's why I need your help.
You haven't told us anything whatsoever about your setup/rom/kernel/etc. We're not mind readers
Try a factory reset in the first instance.
If you're running anything other than stock firmware, go back to stock firmware.
i recomendeed to change your rom..
i think that is a crush from your system, mate..
About 4 months ago I had exactly the same problem.
Is there Debugging-Mode enabled in you're phone?
Is you're phone rooted?
Try to take out only the SIM Card and then connect it to you're PC. Then turn the S2 on and try to backup all you're data.
If you're phone is rooted, try to boot up in CWM Recovery Mode and go to "advanced" and then "Fix Permissions". It shuold solve you're problem.
If you're phone isn't rooted, then you have to flash a stock or custom ROM.

I know about technology but not like this. I have no idea what debugging mode/rooted or cwm recovery is. Any chance of explaining it to me in really, REALLY easy terms?
Sorry about my lack of knowledge guys, but I wholeheartedly appreciate you taking the time out to give me a hand.
1. Try wiping all data (fixed when i had the problem)
1. U need a kernel with CWM recovery (recommend siyah kernel)
2. Install with odin look on these forums for odin dont remember link
3. go to recovery (vol up+home button+power) and wipe data/cache (wipes everything apps, passwords, etc)
4. Try now if works click the thanks button

No problem man
Okay...when you have root permissions on youre phone you can write in system files and do other administrative work.
You can root youre phone by flashing a rooted kernel. The kernel is something like the heart of youre Android OS. You have to know some facts about youre S2, to root it successfully.
You have to know which Kernel version is installed at the moment. This information you can find in Settings -> About Phone -> Kernel Version (or something like that...my S2 is in German ). But when youre phone is bricked or youre system is damaged, its really hard or impossible to find out the kernel version. I think you won't be able to root it successfully :-(
So the only one possibillity to rescue youre S2 is, to flash a new firmware.

[Q] Need help installing clockwork recover on my Atrix HD MB886

Hello XDA members,
I was hoping somebody would help me out, I'm fairly new when it comes to installing custom roms so I require your patience. I don't know how to install a custom rom onto my Bell Atrix HD MB886, everytime I try it says abortion failed, what can I do to fix this. I have wiped data and all that probably 5 times in the past week alone. I would like to know how to successfully install roms without errors. Both the times that I have done this I had my bootloader unlocked, and I had clockword recovery mod latest version 6.0.4.4. I bought an SD card today to help install the roms because otherwise I can't do it from my internal storage. I really hope somebody can help me out.
Regards,
Roger

Hi there. A failed abortion certainly seems like an issue... I guess I am not totally clear on the status here. You say that you had CWM. Do you still have it? Bootloader is still unlocked? What rom are you trying to install? Are you certain it's for the Bell version and not like the AT&T one? What is the exact error message?

No I don't have it atm as I just wiped the data/cache last night but will I already have CWM, I just need to unlock the bootloader and try again...I'm trying to install this one:
Android 4.4.2 KitKat Mokee Rom, and it says the version is a nightly. Yes I'm positive it's the Bell Version as I purchased it at a Bell Store and my carrier is Bell. The error message is "Installation Aborted." It begins installing, and then halfway through I get that error message. How do I fix this?
I figured you knew what phone you had. I was wondering if you had a rom built for the Bell version vs an ATT one. But since you are using a CM based rom, it obviously doesn't matter. Curious as to why you are bothering with relocking the bootloader? But I suggest to either try a different version of the rom, or to change your recovery to one of the Philz Touch versions as that's what some of the other users in that thread for the rom for your phone were using. You can find them here:

No I was bothering to unlock it again, not lock it. Where can I find different versions for the 4.4.2 Mokee Rom? I've tried using the Philz Touch version: Motorola Atrix HD One Click Philz recovery installer and when I tried it a couple of times it said it failed to install although I'm not sure why. I came across these images the other day but how do I use the .img files on my device, as I'm not sure to proceed from here once I have them downloaded.

Odd. I just downloaded it to test and I didn't have any issues. If you can't get the actual application / exe file to open, then just use the Main-Skip.bat. Does the same thing.
If it doesn't open still, make sure that you have your anti-virus off as sometimes those interfere with programs like this. Might also try as admin.

Okay I wasn't looking at the actual .exe sorry, I got it to work and all I installed the Philz One Touch Recovery from that program, just downloaded a different rom and all and then I select the apply update from external storage and when it gets to the verifying update package, it gave me the same error message as yesterday, Installation Aborted.
So again, how do I fix this, am I doing something wrong? Why won't my custom rom install?

I don't think that is the most updated version. What's the version number of the recovery that was installed? It should be listed on the main page of it when you boot there. I was suggesting to use one of the new ones. It might have something to do with the SELinux support that KK roms need. You just have to put the img file in the tools folder and rename the new one the same. But here's no other error that shows up other than Installation Aborted? I was thinking usually it would have an error code or some other message.Have you checked the md5 of the rom zip to make sure it's not corrupted (if the dev provided it)?

Oh yea, forgot you have to undo the screws on the bottom. So you scroll down to hit recovery and use the Power button to select and it doesn't do anything? That's odd.. Try and reflash the recovery since you can still get to fastboot. If that doesn't work, you're not totally screwed since you can still get to fastboot, that means you should be able to restore it to stock and start over.
Alternatively, if you have fastboot set up, you could make sure that philz touch is in the fastboot folder and use this command:
fastboot boot recovery nameofphilztouchfile.img
If you don't have fastboot, then just grab this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 , drop the recovery img in that folder and open the CMD prompt on your computer and change directories to it and run the command.

Perhaps the SU binary's didn't install correctly, anywho if you just want to remove bloatware and you've got twrp but no root then use something like aroma file manager (mount system first) from recovery and remove the files from sys/app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108 (a very useful tool that stays on my SD at all times )
I know how you feel with the bloatware, exact same on virgin media

No worries, As along as you have Infinity shooter's twrp from the original development section then you should be able to boot into recovery mode, select "mount" then tick "system" press back and then install, select aroma, scroll down to the "system" folder and select "App" then remove as you want from their (you will need to delete the relevant .odex files as well)

Android P dp3 and Substratum

Yes, it does in fact work.
Sorta.
Pre requisites: ROOT, File explorer of your choice that uses root and make sure in the settings to enable hidden folders.
You'll need to clear out substratum to make sure there isn't anything lingering and then select your overlay and build/enable them.
Once you do you'll need to open up your file explorer and go to
Data/media/0/.substratum
(If you don't see .substratum you didn't enable hidden folders)
You should have the overlay apks inside. Select all, copy and go to
System/app
And paste your apks inside of it then reboot.
Once your phone boots back up go into substratum and inside of the manager you should see your overlays. Select them and enable them! You may have to reboot for the overlays to properly work as usual
Aaaaaand Substratum already has a beta working! https://play.google.com/apps/testing/projekt.substratum/join
Happy modding!
So far themes that work:
Pi Dark: System, GPS, Settings, and System UI work flawlessly
Swift Dark/Black: All apps except for system/UI work
Sai's Oreo Theme: Android system (stock blue only) System UI and QS tiles only!! Anything else will cause your phone to bootloop. You'll need to boot into twrp, mount storage and go into your system/system/app folder and delete the APK's that caused it to loop
Gave it a shot... Long story short.... Bootloop..... Reflashed factory image.
My stupid fault. I followed directions from another source. May try again after the next update.

You may have to use different cables or pc. I assume your SDK/platform-tools is up to date?

yes im able to boot into bootloader and twrp.
Don't think your phone is a goner but can't understand why it isn't being seen as a fastboot device while in bootloader mode.

If you can get into twrp mount your storage, go into system/system/app and you should see the theme apks inside of it. Delete them and reboot

Substratum is working now without needing to manually copy paste the files. I'd still do a titanium backup before messing with themes

I did see the apks I removed 3 of them and rebooted. That didn't do nothing. Still boot looping and now it's just stuck at the TWRP bootup screen. And my laptop wasn't seeing my phone when plugged in. I tried numerous computers. I did a RMA yesterday. It was unlocked from VZW so I know the replacement will end my rooting and having fun with the phone.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I have the latest 997 version and I checked to make sure it was installing the apk's into the system folder. I'm using pi dark by the way

I would clear everything out, uninstall and reinstall substratum and try reapplying the overlay. Reboot, re apply the overlay and it should come up in the manager section in substratum

Do you have your stock image on your phone? You could wipe it and flash the stock image through twrp
