Bootloader locked on non branded ZU - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi guys
I'm a Sony enthusiast and love the Xperia line up have had several Xperia phones actually, loved them all.But what grabbed me most is the sleek precision engineered Z ultra, fallen in love with it since day one, but never had the opportunity to get it due to many causes on top of them it's availability in my country and high initial price. I lately had the chance of getting a new one and it amazed me actually. What bothered me is that when I checked the configuration menu I found out that the Bootloader unlock statue is set to NO, which is a nightmare. What makes it worse is that I have no warranty as a friend of mine got it to me from Europe brand new and on the packaging there is no trace or name that would justify that it was purchased on contract from a carrier. So guys, is there anyway I can get the Bootloader unlocked ? and how can I get information on it's carrier ''providing it was sold on contract'' . I have seen many people with various Xperia devices who have a Bootloader unlock status:NO on contract free phones, and also, seen many cases of the Bootloader unlock status:NO and people still could unlock it the official way. Please light me up

[Q] Cracking unlock bootloader allowed : no to Yes.?

Hey,
I have recently bought an Xperia Z ultra, and when i was about to CM11 it, i found out that the boot loader unlock allowed is NO.
Now where is live, i brought the phone through and import shop. so the procedure to obtain a operator key and send to Sony is impossible.
I can access my fastboot, i have even rooted my phone, but i really want custom roms and kernels to be an option.
I know that the usual answer to this is that its impossible. But i would appreciate if we discuss it to progress on this as i have seen too many people with this issue and i think it needs a solution. I would request the admin/moderators to keep this thread alive.
Now does anyone know why is it impossible ? is it hardware or software ?
any directions or people that i can personally request to work on this ? any leads ? i am really desperate, i really cant afford to spend that much on a phone again.
is the Xposed Framework any possible solution for this ?
any ideas information is helpful......
There is no solution, or one being worked on that I know of. In one thread it has been asked and a very good hardware hacker said that even taking the back off and putting a Xperia into it's maintenance mode you cant unlock a BL for these locked devices.
Have a read of the hard brick thread for the details
there seems to be a way, just a thought.
Upon on reseaerch, i am finding out a Linux command called kexec seems to be favour here. Since it can bypass kernel and force a custom one...
Work in progress for z1 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462799
Just leaving this link for other users like me, who might be searching... And also requesting to post replies here to see how much demand we have for this issue..
sp has something going on too
Xperia sp seems to have been worked upon in this matter recently http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377972&page=7
kexec for ultra
Kexec for the ultra itself

Are there any developers I can call out/plead to regarding this matter?? its really frustrating to have this much of a powerful device and not play with it. I miss CM.
unlocked bootloader if it says no
I had no idea that the sony z ultra had some units that couldn't be unlocked. why would sony do this, it says being able to unlock your bootloader is important to sony. They even gave me an unlocked code from their site. I bought an factory unlocked phone, so stupid that this one here can be unlocked and that one can't. so am I stuck with a locked bootloader now? I sold my Lg because of this crap now I am dealing with it again ****

It's your carrier that has locked it (Rogers, i'm guessing?). There are only a couple of carriers that locks down the bootloader, like Rogers, O2 (i think) and another one that we're aware of.
It was bought factory unlocked from store no carrier involved which makes it even more crazy. I guess I will sell this model and get different one. Does the gpe have this stupid restriction on its model. I really like the 6.4 inch screen and don't want to go down in size. I am already going to get the nexus 6 so I definitely want a z ultra also

It's shouldn't be locked. Only a couple of carriers locks the bootloader. The GPe's bootloader is unlockable.
@BrownDog99 type *#*#7378523#*#* and check if you haven't. I don't think I've seen a factory one they is bootloader locked. What model? And from where did you buy it?
Ya i tried that it says no bootloader unlock. I bought it from a used cell store in toronto. It has a factory unlocked sticker on it, with no carrier apps installed or anything. Maybe it was a carrier phone, weird it came factory unlocked and with no carrier apps installed. I rooted it and put a dual recovery for lb and of course installed xposed. No custom kernel for me I guess. Too bad. I think it is Rogers and Bell that lock down the bootloader. I am impressed with the speed of it for a 800 snapdragon.

Most hackable phone to buy used

Hi, what model of phone is the best to buy used online, without the risk of finding out that the bootloader is locked?
I'm looking to buy a used phone off ebay. I try to get a phones for <$100, so I'm mostly looking for devices a few years old.
After fighting with Verizon Samsung phones years back, I vowed never again to buy a Samsung device. Instead, I would only buy the Nexus handsets, as they're explicitly made to be developer phones. afaik, there are no Nexus phones with locked bootloaders. That's great! I'd rather just sidestep that whole hassle..
Earlier this year Lineage OS was finally released for the Google Pixel, so I started looking into buying a Pixel. However, I recently discovered that there are some Pixels (distributed by Verizon & EE in the UK) that have locked bootloaders!!
Yes, an android developer-model phone with a locked bootloader! This was a surprise to me, as I thought the intention of that line of phones was to set aside a sacred handset for hackers. Apparently not.
So, good people of xda, I come to you: can you please tell me if there exists a recent (last few years) phone model that I can buy off ebay without the risk of any of those phones having their bootloaders locked?
TIA!

Anybody picked up this device from O2 UK?

I've had Sony Z5C on contract from O2 UK years ago and it had "bootloader unlock allowed : no" in the service menu (ruined my life) and just wandering if they have done the same thing with the Xperia 1?
Looking to buy this device or maybe the 2, so if anyone has picked it up already on contract from O2 could you please check this for me.
Many thanks in advance.

It's not always consistent so even if someone says they can't/can on O2 doesn't mean it will be the same for you. All down to luck of the draw

It's the main reason I never bought from O2 for a long time. I learnt the hard way with the Xperia S back in the day!
Anyway, nowadays, O2 only sell their phones unlocked on their Pay Monthly contracts (not sure about PAYG). Regardless, I can confirm that my Xperia 1 bought directly from O2 is unlocked, and the bootloader can also be unlocked.
Hope that helps.

Thanks that's good to hear, put me off buying from them for years too, any O2 bloatware on it? O2 boot screen? Any other nasty stuff added like tether entitlement check for example? Hope they have given up with all that

Haven't tried tethering, but there was an app installed which could easily be removed. No O2 boot screen which is good.
I'll still be flashing to UK generic firmware once it is available!

Thanks for helping me out. I now know I'm most likely going to be safe getting a Sony device from them again! How are you enjoying the 1? Looks a great shape for one handed use. I'm going to wait until the size of the 2 is confirmed, I'm really hoping it's the same width just with a less elongated screen, that will be perfect imo

It's a nice handset, however suffering from a few performance issues at the mo. Hopefully it should be sorted with a software update, but noticing the odd micro-stutter here and there.
Still getting used to the form factor, as it can be tricky to use in one handed mode - not so much for the width, but for the length. It can feel like the handset will topple i.e. being a bit top-heavy, which is due to how long it is. Probably will get used to it. Will be interesting to see how the Xperia 2 moves things forward...

That sounds annoying, I've currently got a 2.5 year old OnePlus 5T that I've dirty flashed over 20 beta updates without ever doing a wipe and it's still absolutely flawless performance with 4-6 hrs sot everyday and a ridiculous amount of apps installed, the only micro stutter I've ever seen since I've had it is in a 3rd party app, bit of a lag swiping away a tab from the recents in kiwi browser and that's it. Hopefully it gets sorted for you in an update soon.
I'll go into a store and hold the Xperia 1 and 2 when it's released, I only want a new phone because I have a slight crack in the screen of my 5T so in no major rush right now I don't wanna regret what I buy.
I would have bought the OnePlus 7 pro but the size is just stupid IMO and if I bought the normal 7 I'd just feel cheated I was missing out on the things the 7 has.
Thanks for your help with this and if you don't mind when the Xperia 2 comes out and I go phone shopping I may drop you a pm to see if any updates have sorted the performance issues for you.
Sure - no worries at all!

I know its been a while from this post. I just pre-ordered Xperia 1 II from O2 using a relative account (I live in the US and relative will mail me the phone once received). Paid full price of the phone up front and plan is month to month (postpaid not prepaid). Do you know if the phone will be unlocked out of the box? or an O2 sim needs to be inserted first time? O2 website says all their phone shipped after 2019 are unlocked but wasn't sure if an O2 sim need to be used firs time you turn it on. That's how it was for some Samsung unlocked phones 2 years ago. Would appreciate your response
No need to insert an O2 sim. I inserted a Three network SIM straight away and it worked fine. I don't believe anything has changed in the intervening year.

Xperia 1 64GB 802SO, can't update Android, any ideas?

Hello, just got a Xperia 1 64GB 802SO (SoftBank) imported to Canada. I can't seem to get any Android updates. Its stuck on security November 2019, and Android 9.
I've tried starting the phone in Japanese with Japan as region and using a Japanese VPN.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to trip the updates? I'm stuck.
Thanks in advance
Hi. I have the phone. But I'm in Japan. Is it bootloader unlocked? If it is you might not be able to get ota Updates
Hey there,
No need to stress, just download the Xperia Companion app for Win/Mac and you can do all the updates from there for that japanese version regardless from where you are located.
The updates are not accumulative, so you will need to do one at the time. Can be a little bit time consuming but very worth. Kindly let us know how it went.
TrustAugustus, I just have regular Android installed as from factory. For some reason the updates didn't want to come in. I can only guess it has something to do with my region, Canada. Some sort of region lock on updates... However I installed the Sony PC Companion app as djmaxi suggested and I was able to finally get the updates to come in. I was able to update from 55.0.E.0.528 (Android 9, November 2019 Security) to 55.1.B.0.335 (Android 10, August 2020 Security).
djmaxi, thanks it worked. It was just as you said, one update at a time, but it finally updated. I'll have to check periodically thru the Sony pc companion app for future updates. Sony customer support wasn't able to help me with this even. Thanks!
Any issues with the japan version
Hello
I am planning to buy the japan version as well, just wanted to know have you faced any issues using this one in Canada except the update issue which you mentioned.
aliadils3d no other issues so far. I highly recommend the phone. 4K HDR video looks amazing. No camera notch or curved screen to crack. I was coming from an S8+ and using the wife's iPhone 11 max in the interim. Xperia 1 is my favorite. Ordered the screen protector and case from mobilefun. Took almost a month for them to arrive from the UK. If you purchase the phone from pdaplaza use the discount code WELCOME for $10 off.
Hi all!
I plan to order Xperia 1 64GB 802SO from Japan.
According to specification, this is single Sim version.
I know, is it double Sim version of Xperia 1.
it possible to update single Sim version to double Sim? Or this problem is hardware problem?
Thanks!
I just imported a 1 ii and 1 for 240 and 190 USD. The 1 ii is new and 1 has some paint off the fingerprint sensor and other than that new condition, not even micro scratches. Japanese dudes take care of their stuff for sure. Good deals I think. I have a few Japanese Sony already two units xz3 801so, one xz2p from au. Annoying things about these are missing frequency bands. Here I don't get LTE plus. I know you can unlock bands but man it's so complicated and have to bootloader unlock and root. Can someone tell me how they lock band in the first place that's not even fixed by flashing different country firmware with flashtool. I don't recommend flashing these Japanese phones, you will lose NFC, as far as I know no cure due to different hardware and drivers, nobody put in the effort on this. The 1 and 1 ii it's not bad at least they let you put in apn ok. The xz3 you have to use another program to force apn. Someone needs to make a thing that is like the qunlocktool to flash these phones to have all radio frequency. I live with 4g no 4g+ since got these phone so cheap. One for me one for wife. Minor issues used to bug me a lot and read a lot about it and in the end gave up, keeping the phone stock is best.
Oh I came here to complain the camera on these Xperia 1 and 1 ii, vs xz2 premium. Where did the iso 51200 go? Max is 3200. Seriously. The iso 51200 on the xz2p is really good and fun to use. I have a canon 1dx and 1dsII. So now the camera is like going backwards. The 1dx can do 51200, 1ds only 3200. I mainly use the 51200 to capture my 2 year old funny sleep postures and room is dark. 51200 is the way to go. I am guessing the 1 and 1 ii is not capable due to the lack of black and white lens. The xz2p I had the problem with coating scratching off on the lens glass and I didn't know so I kept scratching it off. Now I got some cerium oxide and will polish it. Current photo has a red glow when taking on high contrast areas lol. Once I fix the glass I may sell it, debating if I should keep it just for the camera and the 16:9, so rare now, and the phone itself is pretty rare. There are not a lot of discussions on these au and Docomo model Xperia. Should since you can get these dirt cheap and brand new from Japanese contacts if you know people. Unlock is 24 bucks with S1 network unlock or qunlocktool.
If anyone have a way to unlock the bands without going through the Qualcomm Snapdragon band unlock guide let me know. I have one xz3 bootloader unlocked and it shows annoying warning message when phone start. Apparently no way to relock it before I sell it. I think I'll keep this unlocked bootloader xz3 to play around and learn stuff. I have 2 each from xzp to 1 lol. I hoard Sony flagships. Now eBay has seller promotion 10 items I will sell some phones. Keeping just the 1s and xz2p.
Well most of you just like me got the Softbank/Japan variant of this phone,I'd like for you guys to dig into smth even better I'll try it too, I owned Japanese Xperias before and there was a way to convert those to official global variant using certain files in flash tools while avoiding for instance lets say the baseband related stuff and they worked like a charm though this time around given some are 128 some 64 I am not sure will it work, but for starters we will need unlocked bootloader to at least backup important files before approaching this, I heard people achieved bootloader unlock : yes via lets say s1 tool any insights?
to me it seems the single sim J8110 or J8170 might be closest

Japanese LG V60 Thinq sim unlock

i just wanted to start a thread for the japanese version of this phone which seems nobody have. you can get them cheap from japan for less than 100 USD that's locked to one of the big 3 there. I got a softbank one and asked around so far there is no way to defeat the sim lock. the device can have bootloader unlock option is there. is there a way to remove sim lock once the phone is rooted? sony is nice you can use qunlock tool and doesn't matter what lock. my first time messing with LG and an oppo that is another story, waiting for some indian dude to send the 16 digit code. the LG i asked ebay services and one website so far nobody can unlock it. so i come here to see if there are other ways to unlock it.
also are the hardware the same as other v60? i know sony xperia have different modem hardware and have some bands locked down.
these are nice enough for the price you can enjoy for audio and home or toddler use.
I don't know the answer to your specific question but I will tell you I tried getting a remote sim unlock (from a site that seemed to have good reviews) and it ended up bricking my phone. The only reason it's booting again now is from help from a member on here. The problem now is it has no imei number at all.
Before I tried the remote unlock I bought an unlock code from 2 different websites the first refunded me in a few hours saying they could not unlock my device and the second one never sent anything or refunded so I've sent an email to them.
So I would be wary of the remote unlocks if you found any available.
so far i tried 3 companies.
1. unlockbase, payment goes to unlockjp.com, sent 10 usd, said will refund, this one is for an oppo phone. this one you have to chat with whatsapp and original wanted to send money with SBI bank, DBBL bank, BML, USDT Tether us, all Indian stuff and also take paypal just a little more money. the guy on the chat seems nice. even has their own facebook page, i'll give them a few days to refund.
2. the unlocking company, also can't find code for the LG and will refund take up to 10 days. will wait, very good communications from this one.
3. cellunlocker.net, pretty much refund the same day, this one is good company.
i gave up unlocking the oppo and LG, AU and Softbank respectively for now. just gonna pay for the two sony phone unlock with qunlock. can't go wrong with that one. just some info for the internet if they come across these companies. i will write back when i get money back for the first two.
Oppo has a software unlock but i think only works for the older models.
