Tether Data Limit Bypass on Rooted NF6 Software - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

By "Bypass" this is meant to circumvent the 2.5GB/3GB/5GB tethering limit to T-Mobile's "Unlimited Nationwide 4G" data packages, and not tested on other plans.
I A NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING YOU DO TO YOUR PHONE!
As some of you may have noticed, with the NF6 update there is no longer a /system/csc/ folder or any customer.xml files to modify that hard-code the APN into the device. I did my usual tinkering and managed to get the bypass up and running again.
Please note that even with this bypass, your traffic will still be seen by T-Mobile as coming from foreign devices, and if they fail their HTTP-Header check for approved types of devices then the Tethering will not work without a VPN to hide the HTTP-Headers. Interesting enough, here are devices I have found to work in my travels.
iPhone
iPad
Android Phones & Tablets
Safari on OS X. (Yes, only Safari. Chrome doesn't work without hiding traffic in some way.)
Some things I have found will NOT work without hiding traffic:
Game systems. (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo WiiU)
Windows Desktops/Laptops.
Browsers other than Safari on OS X.
Some tips to avoid using a VPN (since that leads to a slow down of connection speed) is if your system supports a user-agent switcher. This will change the user-agent in the HTTP-Headers of your traffic to appear as another device. A common problem Windows users run into when using a User-Agent Switcher Extension in Chrome for example, is that they choose a mobile device to hide their usage. While this may work for most cases, if you wanted to watch Netflix or not be bothered by defaulting to the "Mobile friendly" versions of webpages, you can instead add a generic user-agent for Safari on OS X. I've done it in the past and its worked incredibly well.
Anyway, enough blah blah blah, here is how I set up my Tethering Bypass on NF6. I am not the original creator of these bypass concepts, just someone who put them together in the proper way so that its worked for me on NF6.
Also feel free to discuss a better/easier way of a Tether Bypass!
The Guide:
Tethering Bypass for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5 NF6 software version in 10-ish steps.
This guide contains references to Paid apps from Google Play that are highly recommended and you should not report issues with this if you are using "pirated" versions of them. Support these hard-working developers!
1. Root your device with whichever method works for you if you are not already rooted. I used CF-Auto Root by Chainfire (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537), but note that this does trip the Knox counter and the counter cannot currently be reset as of 7/14/2014
2. Download Root Explorer and SQLite Editor from Speed Software on Google Play.
3. Using Root Explorer, go to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db and open it (clicking on it) with SQLite Editor.
4. Choose 'system' and then hit the + sign in the top right corner to make a new value. This entry is called "tether_dun_required" (without ""), and the value will be 0.
5. Download APN Backup and Restore app from Google Play. Using Root Explorer, move this app from /data/app/com.riteshsahu.APNBackupRestore-1.apk to /system/priv-app/. Reboot the device now.
6. Open APN Backup and Restore, ignore the ICS warning. Hit the menu button in the top right and Disable ICS Check.
7. Download the GalaxyS5NF6APN.xml attached (unzip it first...), and move it to /sdcard/ApnBackupRestore. All I did was change 'pcweb.t-mobile.com' to 'fast.t-mobile.com' so you can do this on your own if you prefer.
8. Choose "Delete APNs" on APN Backup & Restore. Then choose "Restore APNs" and select the GalaxyS5NF6APN.xml or the one you created with the change.
9. Make a new APN under Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names with the + sign. It'll look exactly like below.
Name: T-Mobile US LTE
APN: fast.t-mobile.com
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: Not set
Multimedia message proxy: Not set
Multimedia message port: Not set
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: default,supl
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Turn APN on/off: APN turned on
Bearer: Unspecified
Mobile virtual network operator..: None
Mobile virtual network operator..: None
Make sure the green bubble is selected next to the one you just created.
10. Download WiFi Tether Router from Google Play. You can find setup instructions for the Samsung Galaxy S 5 on the developer's web page here: https://sites.google.com/site/wifitetherrouter/
Also, feel free to discuss/create a better/easier method. This is just what I worked up and it works for me.

You can simply edit the customer.XML file found in csc directory to allow the tether apn to be shown and editable..

I don't know about you, but my NF6 doesn't have a csc folder like previous updates. Pretty sure I explained this in the OP, but I did write it up at 2am.

I have the note 3 from T-Mobile will it work thanks in advance.

It's impossible to say without looking at the /system/ of the Note 3 on the software version you're asking about. If its the same as the S5 on its VoLTE update where its not done through /system/csc/ then it should work as well I can imagine.

Ok thank you, I'll check and let you know.

You are on T-Mobile right? Mine has it. Its how i originally got it. Right after a fresh Odin NF6 install it was the first thing i did to get a stock copy of it. Are you on a custom ROM? Maybe accidentally deleted it?

I took a system pull after Odin flashing NF6 that I got from SamMobile. I'd imagine the phone wouldn't work so well without those. I certainly didn't remove it, anyway.

The phone works without them. Just some things are changed because it can't find the setting/value so it uses a default. Either way the method you provided is great. You can find a lot of stuff inside database files

Just to clarify, this is the exact contents of the NF6's system.img.ext4. There is no /csc/ inside it. It would be very strange if we had different firmware files!

The weird thing is, its not present inside the tar. I think the files reside in another image on the tar file (like kernel, misc or one of the others) and are then copied into the system directory. But i guarantee you they are in the /system directory after a 100 percent fresh Odin flash

so if I use a VPN I don't have to do any of this stuff and i cant just Tether as much as I want?

This whole time I had forgotten about safari?! I could have been watching netflix on my laptop instead of having to get chromecast or a roku stick?! Thanks for the info and my kids are enjoying cartoon network online games again!

They can track data usage through pcweb even if you use a VPN.

There has to be a simpler way to accomplish this, also one that doesn't require 2 paid apps? tried using free alternatives and they just crash like everything does for the s5 :/

You have to use a modded framework-res.apk in order to use stock tethering app. It checks to see if you have tethering on your plan and if not it doesn't even turn on tethering. Unless you have some other hack/mod allowing it then you can use it they won't/can't track it that way. Also, under your apns, press menu button and click "reset to defaults" to re-load the changes you made.

do you have any suggestions on an app that I could use

Any of them on the market. Even simple ones that natively activate tethering.

[MOD] [CM10] MMS Fix (Sprint)

MMS has been extremely flakey for me on CM10. After some searching, I found some alternate APNS settings here, and tweaked the ones on the phone to work properly.
Installation directions are the same as the linked post, so full credit goes to AlpineMan for that. The only thing I did was remove the unnecessary crap from the file.
Download the APN config from here.
Install APN Backup & Restore.
Convert the "APN Backup & Restore" into a system app by either using Titanium Backup, or simply use Root Explorer/ES File Explorer (root enable it) to move the APK from /data/app to /system/app.
I didn't need to do so here (using Titanium Backup), but rebooting the phone may be necessary after moving the app.
Launch APN Backup & Restore. Close the warning, and click "Disable ICS Check" on the menu.
Click "Backup APNs" to backup your existing settings. This will create a directory called "ApnBackupRestore" in your /mnt/sdcard.
Copy the xml file from step 1 to the ApnBackupRestore folder.
Go back to the main app menu, click on "Delete APNs" and confirm it.
Choose the file you downloaded from step 1 and confirm it.
Reboot phone, and enjoy the MMS.
Again, this is based on AlpineMan's work, I just cleaned the APN list up. In my short testing, it completely fixed my MMS flakiness. I figured it's better to post it here, as in the past, submitting fixes to the cyanogenmod team has been a waste of time.
I thought APN's were obsolete since ICS, can you restore APN's in JB?
Thanks for posting this! Mms is the only reason that kept me from using cmx as a daily driver. Will be definitely using this after work tonight when I have time to play.

I finally had a chance to test it on the AOKP JB build 4. I dont live in an area with LTE service. I still have 3g and its the same speed as from before and after this mod.
I can confirm that it does work for me. I havent tested out LTE yet. Is that what you meant by the enhanced network?
Can anyone confirm if LTE still works with this apn?
as for now i guess i'll keep it. 3g has definitely gotten slower for sprint in the past years. definitely makes me consider leaving for another network.

Im back to mean rom. my 3g speeds were down to the floor with this mod. like 10-20 kbps. it was horrendous.
Everytime i use a aosp rom, my mms barely works, the 3g is flakey, and i have bluetooth connectivity issues. I miss my original evo 4g!
Thanks for the mod for the mms fix :good:. it does work if anyone was wondering. You just have to put up with slower 3g speeds and deal with all the other bugs that an aosp rom comes with unfortunately.
DC here just did a speed test with these APNs and got 884kbps DL and 748kbps UL. I did not do one beforehand though.
That sounds good. Especially considering I haven't used the APNs yet, and get this

Unfortunately this did not work for me ... I still get a constant "Downloading" after receiving a MMS.
I can confirm this works. Just wanted to add on a few things that I had to figure out on my own, though. This guide was nice but it made things a little confusing at times.
HOW I DID IT:
Install APN Backup & Restore from the playstore.
Convert APN Backup & Restore to a system app by downloading /system/app mover from the playstore.
Open /system/app mover and click "APN Backup & Restore". Click YES when it asks you to move to /system/app/. Reboot phone.
Open up APN Backup & Restore. Go to menu and click Disable ICS Check. Click Backup APNs and enter name or press OK.
Download the APN config (right click save as) and save it to the folder "ApnBackupRestore" found on your sdcard0 (phone storage).
Open back up APN Backup & Restore and click Delete APNS.
Click Restore APNS and select "sprint-mms-fixed-apns.xml".
Reboot phone.
Done. Try it out.
If this doesn't working out for you then try disabling the auto retrieve feature found in settings so you can manually retrieve your pictures when you're in a good area.

I don't see how there would be a risk in deleting your apns. If you back them up as instructed you can restore them at another point in time. All that happens is you lose internet for a few seconds while you're making the swap .

[Q] Mobile data issues with UltimaRom 6.0.2

I've been using UltimaRom for some time now and love it! But recently updated my Galaxy S3 to the latest version only to find mobile data not working.
I tried flashing previous versions, doing full wipes as i went but still couldn't get it back.
I've ended up using odin to flash stock back on and data is working again.
I tried going straight to to the latest UltimaRom but the same problem has occured.
Any suggestions?
Hello,
I'm using the same rom, but I don't have that problem, however I do have a suggestion.
On your current rom, got to:
System settings - More settings - Mobile networks - Acces Point Names, and click on the one that's there.
Inside that there should be one called "apn".
Write that down somewhere, and when you flash Ultimarom again, go into the same place and paste the info. (it should look something like this: www.Internet.mtelia.dk or: websp, it depends on your carrier)
It sounds like the new version somehow doesn't have the correct apn setting and so you will have to set it up manually.
Hope this helps.

thanks i'll give that a go.
is it just the field named apn i need? just checked and there's a bunch of information in there.
Depending on your carrier you can log in to their site and get the settings texted to your phone, and install it from there.
I'm with T-Mo and I did it that way to save writing things down. Just choose the settings for internet and MMS.

As far as I know all you need is the apn field.
Very few carriers use different values than the default as far as I know.
Worst case is that you have to check on the website of your carrier to see the full apn, but I think it should be fine.

yeah most carriers setting are the same, just the username and password for your carrier you need
go to there website and request the setting to be sent to the phone then save them.

How to Enable Native Visual Voicemail HTC One M8

Restore Native AT&T Visual Voicemail on any ARHD ROM for the HTC One M8 (only works with AT&T carrier)
S-Off is not required (S-Off is only required if you want to update your firmware to the latest version)
Phone must obviously be unlocked and rooted
I don't recommend using v9.1 ROM, the ElementX kernal will not be updated to support 4.4.3 thus sense 6.0 toolbox homescreen swipe commands and motion gestures will not work. I read that 4.4.4 will be out soon, so no one is really investing time in custom kernals to support sense-based ROMs for 4.4.3. You can still updated your firmware to the latest version and run the 8.1 ROM. I recommend searching for the "no red text" firmware version.
Keep in mind that your Voicemails won't download when you're connected to a Wifi Network. If anyone has a fix for this please post and PM me so I can update this thread.
1) Right click "Android_Revolution_HD-One_M8_8.1.zip" and select 7-Zip "Open Archive"

If your phone is rooted with a custom ROM such as the Android Revolution HD by mike1986 and your visual voicemail is missing, corrupt or broken, I will teach you how to reinstall it! Note, this has only been tested on the AT&T variant of the HTC One M8.
If you're an advanced user you can use the Android SDK, Cygwin and Kitchen to modify the ROM and include the following APKs:
- Phone.apk (replacement rom, newer version)
- ATT_VVM3.apk (new rom)
- HtcContacts.apk (replacement rom, newer version)
- HtcDialer (replacement rom, newer version)
- Message (replacement rom, newer version)
There are many tutorials on this site that explain how to modify and repackage a ROM.
If you want to keep it simple here's the process.
Acquire the apps listed above. Visit my website to download the APKs, just Google Trick Master PC, or you can pull them from your Stock ROM under /system/apps and/or /system/priv-app
Drop the apps on your Internal or External SD Card
Use ES File Explorer to Mount the system directory with Read/Write Permissions
Use ES File Explorer to Install the APKs from your SD location
Use Titanium Back-up Pro (yes, you have to pay for it). Browse the list of applications and find the apps you installed, long press the app and select "Convert to system app", if you have the option to integrate into ROM select that as well.
Restart the phone and set-up your native visual voicemail functionality. This process restores full functionality with zero glitches.

Yes, that happened to me a few times at first, you have to follow the exact procedure above and you have to restart the phone. As long as your phone is the ATT variant this should work. I had to mess around with it for a while, but got it working flawlessly. Restart after installing the APKs, the use Titanium Back-up to elevate the apps to system level apps. Then restart again.
Yeah I've uninstalled the apps with titanium backup and tried the process multiple times on my ATT variant running Viper ROM to no avail.

I had the same issue. What I had to do was change the SKU to 7 and the Region to 1 in the ACC\default.xml file. This also enabled the VVM button in the phone app.
However, I now have a problem with retrieving voicemails when connected to a wireless network. If I turn off wireless, everything will work fine. When on wireless, it gives an error about mobile data not being available, but it is most definitely on. It's like the messages/vvm apps aren't being allowed to bypass the wifi to check for data.
In case it matters, I am on a stock international ROM (1.54.401.5), and I also could not get the phone.apk to install using the directions above, so I installed the applications using a flashable zip.

This works 100% on the Android Revolution HD Rom for the ATT variant. The ARHD ROM is the stock rom modified by mike1986. I'm not sure how the Viper ROM was developed ie from stock ROM or from KitKat baseline ROM.
Unless your married to Viper I would highly recommend checking out the ARHD ROM, you won't be disappointed. It's an incredible ROM.
Can confirm this works perfect on ARHD ROM by mike1986! Thanks!!! :good:

Is this the version of the VVM that integrates into the HTC messaging app?

If you mean not using the standalone google play store visual voicemail then yes.

Yes, this is the app that integrates into your native Messages.apk (scroll left to view voicemails, scroll right to view all messages {VM, SMS, MMS}, and right again to view just SMS/MMS).

Interesting... just tried leaving a voicemail off wifi and voicemail notification went through. Turned on wifi and left a new voicemail and got no voicemail notification. Turned off wifi and refreshed voicemails and new voicemail notification showed up.
So, voicemail works with wifi off. When wifi is on, the voicemail app says there is no data and that it doesnt work over wifi.
On a positive note, transcribe to text works great!
I don't think it should be too hard to fix but then again, I am not a developer.
I have confirmed that everybody on AT&T, tmobile and sprint regardless of your phone type cannot download visual voicemails while on a wifi connection this problem is acknowledged and stated by AT&T, they even add the disclaimer alongside their visual voicemail stand alone app. Iphone users everywhere complain about this as well. Honestly, I never noticed the issue before, but of course who would ever really engage in extensive voicemail testing. Perhaps one day the carriers will solve this issue; although personally I believe it's an intentional move by the carriers to force their customers off WiFi and on to the carriers' very expensive data network. I mean we're talking about tens of millions of dollars per year in data charges just from users downloading voicemails over cellular data on a daily basis. No one in leadership at the major carriers would ever let that revenue slip away, not unless they had to address the issue to resolve competitive threats.
So in conclusion your visual voicemail is functioning perfectly as it should.

I believe this is incorrect. I never had these problems on the stock AT&T Rom. I will reflash and verify, but I am almost 100% certain it worked without issue.

Let us know what you find out, but all the research I did would suggest otherwise. ATT's standalone application for visual voicemail even has the disclaimer in the app store that says it won't work on WiFi. If it works for you please post a copy of your default.xml file \system\customize\ACC\
Thanks.

It did work over WiFi on the stock AT&T ROM using the built-in HTC VVM app. The app appears to be able to use the cellular data connection just like the messages app does to receive sms even when on WiFi.
I have attached the stock AT&T ACC\default.xml, but I doubt that's where the solution lies. I have tried flashing in the APKs listed above, plus the ATT AAinfo.txt, the default.xml files from ACC, CID, and MNS. I also flashed in the market.xml from the permissions folder as well as the nfcee file from the etc folder. The wireless problem still persists for me even with all of those just thrown into the ROM.
Unfortunately, that is as far as I've been able to get with this project. If anyone else has an idea, I'm willing to give it a shot.
Thanks,
JTok
I'll try to wrap my head around this problem initially I did a comparison between the default XML file and the custom ROM default XML file. The variance in the file comparison was nominal, nothing that would affect voicemail download over wifi. I'm going to use the Android development kit to run debug while I launch the visual voicemail app on a wifi connection and monitor the logs for any potential errors. Still if there are any Android developers out there who might know what the problem is it would be great if you could share it with us
Has anyone implemented this in ViperRom? I would love to get this working but really don't want to be the Guinea pig lol

Hotspot hack?

Looking to enable the hotspot functionality on my Note 3. I am currently rooted, though no custom recovery. How would I go about getting a native hotpot mod without installing a custom recovery? Im not opposed to installing one, but ive read that it trips Knox.

TRUE, TRUE. If you install a recovery it will trip KNOX. your best bet is to go to Google play store and install the Paid version of hotspot tether it works, and the developer is could at keeping it up to date. Ya, your our out a couple of bucks but that's better than the $30 monthly fee from sprint. OR, you can flash through a RECOVERY a deodexed version of NC5 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472664 THEN flash through a RECOVERY this free hotspot mod here http://kitkatkiller.eu/index.php?dir=SPRINT+GALAXY+NOTE+3/KITKAT+FILES/MODS/NC5 ENJOY !!!

Sprint care should give it out without hesitation. Once obtained I posted in help forums how to change it to 000000 so you dont have to remember it in the future.

Much faster/easier than patching out the check and pushing system files is giving it the value it wants

Sorry, the one i linked works on nc5d 100% but in portrait mode only. I dont know anything about whats in fre3 2.16b rom. Sounds like you have custom recovery... backup and odin a stock tar then restore once youve grabbed your msl or maybe just call sprint to save yourself time.
Something I used to do back in the Hero and Evo 3d days was get my MSL and add it as a contact. Unfortunately, I didn't do that on the Note 3. Glad to see SPCUtility was upgraded to work on NC5. Now to make sure I always have my code. Do what you want with that tip. Thanks idone for all the neat stuff you are finding.

[Q] Apps that can change or force into roaming?

Does anyone know any reliable app(s) that can force a Sprint galaxy note 3 into roaming connection?
At times, I am inside my work building where there is dead-zero coverage from Sprint, but full connection bars for my roaming connection when it switches. I have a friend who has a Verizon phone and also shows full connection bars inside the building, but I am not sure if this is the network my Sprint device is roaming on.
If there isn't an app, is there a manual way to get force roaming?

I want to give this a try, but, for some reason, the Pay By Paypal link on the website denies my login credentials.
It uses a small paypal window to authenticate me but always returns "the user name or password are incorrect".
When I login to Paypal on paypal.com, it works without issue....
I emailed the support link.... now comes the waiting game D=
Thanks for pointing this app out for me

Change your paypal password asap.. that sounds a bit phishy.
You can use Samsung DM Service app that comes with stock rom to change prl to one that only roams. Make sure in your network settings>other networks voice/data roaming is enabled.
It lets you choose any file with .prl extension from root of storage then reboots to apply it. Its free to do if you dont want to buy an app.

I would have to create the prl file myself or just edit the one that my phone has?
And, how to I bring up the Samsung DM Service app?
