Android.process.media draining battery - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks, I am new here!
I have Sony Xperia SP with stock OS 4.3 latest update 12.1.A.1.205 not rooted and I am having problem with system service android.process.media. It drains my battery like crazy and overheats my phone. It is running all the time in background and taking up system resources. I am layman at Android technical aspects so I tried to google up any info about it and figured out that this service takes care of "detecting" and "indexing" files like for example detecting new .JPG files as pictures and then adding them into database of any installed picture viewer. I have theory that it got error and now it is looping in it. If I understand this correctly, it tries to detect files of which "type of medium" they are and then add them into its indexing database, but on my sd card I have lot of files that I expect Android cant "understand (detect them as any type of medium)", because I have few ports of originally PC games on my device, so I have lot of files like .CFGs, .WADs, .PAKs, PK3s and so on.
I found one solution that worked only partially. I forced stop and cleared data of Download manager and Media storage. Firstly it seemed like that it fixed my problems, but after I rebooted everything started all over again.
BTW I am using Stamina mode, so I dont think it runs in background when my phone is idle, only when I am using it.(?)
But please no answers like: "do factory reset" "format micro sd" "replace your micro sd card with new one" (it is new and works perfectly, so I really dont believe problem lies there) ... I am actually interested in understanding what is going on and how can I fix it (if possible).
Could somebody please help me out? Thanks. (It is really ruining my battery life.)
EDIT: Also forgot to say, I know about .nomedia file that prevents Android from indexing files of folder it is placed in, but does it also affect files that are located in folders under that specific folder?
EDIT2: What an embarrasment, of course I meant android.process.media not service, what was I thinking?

Your handsfrees are connected?
BTW by rooting and installing Terminal Emulator you can stop media server with command

This is possible of course but we do not know the side effects of stopping an important service.

No and I dont even have any handsfree at all. But I already fixed this glitch, thanks for effort anyways.
It was caused by bad tags in some of my .MP3s from Walkman app I am using. So I cleared its data and then downloaded info for all songs again and now everything works correctly and android.process.media is no longer running in background.

[Q] Transfer files??

Morning all
Just got my tab 10.1 yesterday, rooted and installed overcomes ROM this morning. For the life of me I cannot copy over any MKV files as i want to put my files on the damned thing. I've had a quick search through and it seems most people can do it somehow its just no one has given a fool proof way of doing it as far as i can see (i know i will be wrong there)
I have tried to use recovery usb mount but that just doesn't work and every time i use the mtp is just crashes windows explorer.
Please can someone tell me there is a way i can get my files onto my tablet?
any help is greatly received

MTP crashes Explorer.exe? Thats really weird. Sounds like you have bad drivers. Uninstall and reinstall your Samsung drivers and try again.
Another option is to get the USB connector piece that allows you to connect and view the contents of a USB drive with a file manager app straight from the tablet.
One more option is Dropbox. Its a personal file sharing software that lets you see your files from any device with internet. Just drop the files from your computer into your dropbox folder and they will automatically upload online. You can then go to www.dropbox.com and sign in to see these files. Android devices have a Dropbox app, so you don't even have to open the browser, all your files are right there in a folder on your homescreen for you.
If you don't have a dropbox account, Click Here to Sign Up You get 2gigs of free storage space.
rename the extension .mkv to something else like .abc and it should work.

I should have said I renamed. The mkv in question was only 850mb and it crashes. However an mp4 of 1.4gb works fine. All be it it asks me to convert it first.
I'll try and remove the drivers and reinstall and see if that works when I finish work.

Stopping Auto Run When Connecting to PC

Does anyone know how to stop the Auto-Run prompt to install drivers whenever you connect a Rezound to a PC? I've already attempted to install the drivers several times. The first time, after installing, the app said I needed to subscribe to additional VZW services, which I declined. But, I was still prompted again. Every subsequent time I allowed the install to run, the installer would hang at some point.
Down load HTC SYNC from the net to your pc and install it on your pc. After installation, uninstall HTC SYNC from the pc. The drivers will be left behind and your pc will stop asking.

I have HTC Sync on my computer now, and I use it. Won't removing it prevent me from sync'ing Outlook with my Rezound?
It is that Verizon virtual drive that pops up in addition to the HTC Storage drive (Internal phone "SD" memory) and the SD Card (External SD Card memory.)
Most every custom ROM around here deletes that thing as part of eliminating Verizon's bloatware; I would suggest deleting the files inside the virtual drive and see if that helps prevent any Autorun of the files. There is probably a tool or guide around here for removing that on the stock ROM.
Edit: Nevermind this technique, as OP said it is a disc image and files cannot be deleted as such.
Go in and rename cdrom.iso I believe it is to .bak, the problem will stop.
There are posts about it, I did it so long ago, one of the first things I did when we got root.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Because it's setup like a CD-ROM, you cannot simply delete the files, nor can you rename or edit them. I would've simple renamed or edited the Autorun.inf had it been that simple.
Where might one find that .ISO you referred to? I tried looking at the internal and external "storage" spots, but to no avail. This stuff is so irritating; if I don't dismiss that window every time, my CPU on my PC goes into overdrive, kind of like when you leave a dialog box open without answering it.

The file is located at \system\etc\cdrom.iso from root; you can't access that normally so you will need to be rooted in order to delete it manually. There was a bloatware tool that used a temp root exploit on the original firmware of the phone, but the OTA update broke that temp root method. Since the OTA, you must unlock the bootloader to obtain root access.
Assuming you may not want to root your phone just yet around here, so this may be worth a shot. It is a workaround if you are on Windows 7, culled this from a web search so I can't vouch for it, but with that said:
1. Installed the VZ Media Manager. After installation, ran the program once and cancelled all of the updates etc. that it wants to do.
As soon as you plug in the phone, it tries to start the media manager program with verizon.exe but no longer goes to the web site telling you to install the software.
2. Renamed C:\Program Files\Verizon V CAST Media Manager\verizon.exe to verizon.exx
3. Used a scripting program to create a new .exe file named verizon.exe that does nothing but a meaningless set command. ("set noverizon=") and put the .exe file in the programs folder shown above.
Now when I plug in the phone, nothing happens except the Windows run option box comes up - no prompts for anything Verizon. The verizon.exe program still runs, but it does nothing and you never see it.
You could always rename verizon.exe verizon2.exe if you really want to ever run the program.

Edit, also this:
Just tried this and it seems to be resolving my issues with the popup. However I installed the VMM (Verizon Media Manager) Mode Selector but had not installed vcast yet. Use [Windows Key] + R to invoke the Run dialog. Type in "msconfig" and hit enter. Select the Startup tab. Find the VMM Mode Selector entry and unclick it.

Option 1 sound like the smart way to go. Problem is, for me, the program does not install to begin with, so I have no such folder on my C: drive. I even checked my installed programs in Control Panel to be sure. What a PITA!
On another note, looks like I now have even bigger fish to fry. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27850700#post27850700
What really sucks is that I finally resolved all my multiple e-mail account issues, and everything, only to find I will now have to setup a new phone all over again!

[Q] Issue with [ROM][JB][UNOFFICIAL] CM10 BETA1 based port for Legend

Since i cant post in the development section,so i decided to post my issue in here.
I have this problem which i cant access my SD card content through the music and gallery stock apps.I tried using third party apps and it still gave the same result. The apps show no content at all.Anyone have went through the same problem?Any idea how to solve this issue? :fingers-crossed:
maybe you should try it with another microSD-Card, I also had some problems with the installation, so I had to install it many times until it really worked fine...
Issue with [ROM][JB][UNOFFICIAL] CM10 BETA1, to enable USB Media device, phone storage
Neither I (noob) can post new thread with new issue discovered... So I post this here.
This is my first post on XDA forum. I have been using the ROM now for 1 week. Gracias Zeubea!!! Neither any problems with battery drain, it lasts for 2-3 days.
Here is my issue:
THe idea was to review and put some new ringtones in /system/media/audio/ folder on phone's storage.
I shut down the phone, took out the SD card and boot it.
Then I connected it via USB to WinXP PC. Windows explorer does see Removable Disk letter, but it doesn't show its contents (folders, files...).
While there is SD card on, notification in status bar appears and you can choose to turn-on USB memory storage. When there is no card in, there is no notification and you cannot choose to view folders in phone's memory, while I could do that when I had official Froyo from HTC.
I googled a bit and found some kind solution on another type of phone (i have link, but i cannot post it, since I am noob!)
via Settings/Wireless&Networks/Storage and then choose Menu button and under additional options you can find "Connect as Media Device (MTP), which is turned off by default , and when you try to turn it on, menu hangs and it forces to close. There is 3rd option in that menu which doesn't appear on that page is, Turn on USB Mas Storage which is on.
I did further some search on XDA forum and even tried code in Terminal Emulator under su rights
persist.sys.usb.config=mass_storage,adb
and nothing happened
Is this some bug that one can expect maybe will be adressed in the future?

Your funny, if you take out sdcard then try to access sdcard via USB its not going to work :banghead: because sdcard is gone, there is nothing wrong with zeubeas rom in regards to USB storage.
Oh and btw, you can't access system folder using USB mass storage mode, you can use adb on your computer to access the phones storage bits n pieces like system, data and sdcard.
For the sake of safety for your phone I think that you need to get a better understanding of how android system works before messing with your system folders!

dear ranger; first of all, thank you for very prompt answer. Iam glad this is very live community, where you can post any question and you get answer. With all respect, in stock ROM, both HTC and some other LG model my wife owns, when you connect via USB the phone without SD card, there is notification and dialog what sort of connection to choose (you know: charge/USB storage/...). Even CM 7.2.0 final for HTC legend has it. You can access contents of phone storage (without SD card). Haven't you tried yourself before?
Maybe you are other type of person, but my goal is not to be every day clung infront of PC passing adb commands to comunicate the phone with PC. I thought there is some simplier way to do the same. I will be glad if you can inform me where I can read more about adb commands regarding accessing and passing files across system folders.
And I don't even intend to mess with sys folders, I know for this we have zeubea type people. Simply I wanted to add few ogg files, that's it. And I know I can put same named folders /media/audio/ringtones/ on SD card and it should funcion with some minimal lag but I was curious if it is very simply to that other way. I will not even intend to mess system folders.
Have a good day. =)
I'm not sure what you want - the Legend has limited onboard flash, so you really should use your SDcard as much as you possibly can. Use Link2SD to store non-system apps on an extra partition on your card, so apps won't die when SD card's primary partition is mounted via USB.
To transfer music, connect Legend to your computer using USB, enable USB storage on phone, and copy music files to SDcard's 'music' folder. Works for me using mp3, haven't tried ogg.

I'm also considered a noob, so I can't post in the rom dev thread yet, so here we go
I've been running this ROM for about a week, and I've had some issues that I haven't seen reported elsewhere:
Contacts: When searching for a contact, it appears that some filtering is applied, and oftentimes the contact I'm looking for is not found, although it's there when I scroll through contacts. Depending on language settings (english vs danish) the search also seems to be case sensitive, so e.g. entering 'fra', 'Frank' doesn't show up.
Also, contacts are not consistently transferred to my Parrot Bluetooth car kit. Could be bluetooth glitches
WLAN: Using Wifi Analyzer and similar apps, channels are not identified properly, but instead marked as all 0, 1 or ?. I suppose it hangs on a slightly unsuitable WLAN driver, because I haven't seen it in other JellyBean or CM10 ROMs (HTC HD2)
More issues
I just found a few threads mentioning the WLAN channel issue on select HTC handsets since CM6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1022379 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=891563. Unfortunately, there's no clear solution in those threads.

[Q] Error - Cannot open Int/Ext memory card folders from laptop

Hello everybody
I have a Micromax A116. The experience has been great.
Though from last few weeks i have been facing a trouble. When the device is connected to my laptop, i am not able to open any folder in the internal and external drives of the device. I am able to access those folders from the device itself but not from the laptop. :crying:
The issue has been prevailing since i connected my device to a desktop in my college library via the usb cable , to transfer few files. Some malwares may have been transferred as well.
Before that it was working fine. I used to open folders and do copy paste stuff through laptop as well. Now i cannot.
All the folders in the drives have turned into shortcuts and give an error on double click. I have attached a snap of the same to be more clearer for you people. Please have a look and suggest a solution. Its been a pain to transfer stuff through bluetooth only.
From my side i scanned the drives of the device with Kaspersky Internet Security original licensed version , it found out some malwares and removed them but still the issue stays. It was done through laptop only.
If the same issue has been stated previously in the forum, i apologize for bringing it up again as i was not able to find a similar one.
I tried linking the snap to this thread directly but as i am a new user its not letting me do that. Please look at the attachment instead.
Thanks.
seems like a malware problem

It is a malware brother...
First delete all the .lnk files i.e. Shortcuts, a malware does it. If you have an anti-virus then scan it 1st. Antivirus will probably delete this .lnk files and you will not be able to see anything in your Storage but everything is there just hidden so DO NOT EVER FORMAT IT after you scan it. Now open "cmd" without quotes with administrator priviledges and :
attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.*
[You can copy the above command --> Right-click in the Command Prompt and
paste it.]
Note : Don't forget to replace the letter g with your flash drive letter.

Due to a tight schedule i was not able to perform the suggestions given by you guys since i posted the issue here.
Just a while back i executed the attrib command and it worked.
Thankyou both of you. The attrib command got the hidden folders out and i am able to access them now.
I shift deleted the shortcut copy of those folders as my Kaspersky antivirus was not able to find a virus or malware as such and did not deleted it.
Now will i need to do the attrib command everytime i connect my mobile to PC and will these shortcuts come back ? Is the mobile completely malware free ?
Please suggest any anti-malware software . I have used AVG for mobile but that didnt find any malware previously and same with KIS.
There has been another issue that has come up from last 4 to 5 of days or more. The mobile battery is draining within an hour. The battery used to stay for 10 to 12 hours previously , i do a normal calling and playing subway surfer for 10 15 minutes max a day. But now even when the phone stays idle the battery drains rapidly. Even a pdf reading on lowest brightness takes the battery to a ride.:crying:
I am charging 3 to 4 times a day from 4 to 5% to 100%:crying:
Can the malware issue be the reason for this ? Because as i just got the hidden folders back , should i monitor it for sometime now ?
Its been just 7 months with the mobile. Please suggest. Thanks

1) Dude your memory card will be malware free till you connect it back to your computer and access its content. in fact as per my understanding your folders will get hidden in any pendrive or hard drive you connect to your PC.
Most of the anti-malwares will be un effective towards this problem, So my suggestion to you is make a back up of your data in a hard drive and format your PC and run the attrib command when you first connect that hard drive back to your PC for restoring your back up.
2) As for mobile back up, according to your usage your battery back up is low. Try a factory reset of your CHD, if that doesnt help, get your battery replaced if its under warranty.

SD Data Lost

I've somehow lost all the data on my sdcard.
Device is an LG G2 D802, running stock lollipop 5.0.2
I had my phone hooked to pc and all was OK.
Then I tried accessing a folder (after being ble to) and an error popped up on windows, I can't remember what, something along the lines of "the device cannot be accesses".
I then disconnected the USB...without first clicking safely remove...so, yes, it probably is my own fault.
Please don't point this out!
How can I retreive my data. I'm more concerned about pictures and videos.
I've tried a few apps, but aren't having much success.
A lot of files don't display correctly
Any help is appreciated
Anyone got any advice?

I have a great working solution for you.
I know a computer software that can extract your images, videos and everything in its original form.
It works on windows.
You have to connect your SD card with the help of card reader.
(Scan and recover)
Below is the direct download link for the software.

Hi thanks.
But as my device doesn't physically have an sdcard, its a virtual card as far as in aware.
And the back of the phone doesn't come off.

Click to collapse
