[Q] Is there any way T-Mobile will just give me a SIM unlock code? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I'm getting a new T-Mobile S5 tomorrow that I bought off of Swappa. I plan on using it with an AT&T SIM. What are the odds that I can just call T-Mobile and have them give me the unlock code since it's clearly been paid for?

Slim to none.

I read here several times that after having the phone for a month they will give u the unlock code...

If you're the original owner. Just buy a code online, like $25 bones.

Yeah they wouldn't give me one and I wasn't going to press it because the guy I spoke to was perhaps the nicest customer service representative to ever exist. Seriously, why is T-Mobile not in my area? I would switch to them in a heartbeat. Anyway, I bought one for $32, it worked, and I'm now "enjoying" my AT&T service on an unlocked Galaxy S5.

^ There is an accurate answer.
It's not impossible, but most CSRs are not going to be convinced that it's your phone if you are not the original purchaser, not to mention not an active TMB customer. Nor have much motivation to help you. If you have time to waste, have at it. But slim to none is not inaccurate.
If your time is worth anything, don't spend much time on the attempt. Just buy an unlock code for ~ $25 and move on.

nada! they won't give up anything, you may want to try Region Lock Away! from the market. Should work just fine, I think it has been updated for S5 now.

I'm not so sure about that. The description hasn't been updated since November and reads:
Compatible devices
- Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 (MI7, MJ1, MJ3 firmwares)

Try doing a search...I'm pretty sure you can find quite alot of threads relating to this topic.
My brother's friend that works at AT&T said the same thing. "too new". He even said it about the skyrocket.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
might be too new regardless
Usually the carriers are happy to unlock the phone because they charge you a boat load to do it. If they are denying your money I'm not sure if any third party sites could get one from your IMEI or not either. Let us know if you find anything though. Here's hoping!

What carrier charges for unlock codes?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
cellunlocker
Just came across another thread stating codes were purchased off cellunlocker.net for around 8 bucks, it's not free, but not much at all and worth it if it works.
All canadian carriers charge for unlocking. Usually $50+
PS: I have yet to find a source to unlock mine. I'm switching to bell this week and taking my note with me I hope.

I called at&t tech support 2 weeks ago, and tried again yesterday. Both times they said no unlock codes for Note due to it being "too new."
I'm really in no rush to unlock it, although I wish it was unlocked just for bragging rights.
I'll be more concerned about unlocking it within the next 3-6 months...either to sell it or for when I'm traveling abroad.
Cellunlocker.net, if u record ur process of unlocking ur phone with there code and submit it they refund u ur money so equals free

Carriers don't charge for unlock codes. They either refuse to give it or they give it freely.
There are other companies that do charge. They are not the carriers.

As has been discussed, pay the $25 to cellunlocker.net. Record yourself on video opening their email and inputting your code. Once the phone is unlocked, send them the video. Get your money back. Free reliable unlock code from a legit source.

Best place to buy TMO S5 "full price"?

If I were to pay "full price", as in $600-$650 or whatever, what is usually the best place to buy the phone, when something like warranty is considered?
Looks like Best Buy and Amazon don't sell it.
I'm considering getting the TMO S5 to use on my AT&T plan (grandfathered unlimited data).
If the TMO S5 gets TWRP recovery then I'm definitely in.
since you're looking for a TMO S5, have you tried a TMO store?

I don't know if this will help you but I purchased my Note 3 from TMOBILE but had to buy a TMOBILE PLAN (they said they couildn't just sell me a phone. So I bought the phone online and when it came in the mail - I cancelled the tmobile data plan aft, before I activated the line. Because I never activated the line, I didn't have to pay any fees - beyond the cost of the phone. The only other thing you have to worry about is getting an unlock code for the phone - Tmobile may or may not give the code to you - in which case you can probably buy it online - or it might be possible that Chain Fires Region Fix will work as well. (that is what happened on the NOTE - the region fix also unlocked Tmobile CARRIER. (it is also possible that secret samsung codes will unlock carrier (The S4 has codes that work for that phone - I don't know if they work on the S5)
I hope this helps... (I think I read that some people were able to buy a phone from TMOBILE for use on ATT and they purchased it directly from the TMOBILE store - but I am not for sure about that. I know that Best Buy will not let you do that.
The code to unlock the phone was fixed in future versions of the software and don't work on the 4.4.2 s4 software.
I doubt that it will work on this one.
If you are going to continue using AT&T you should be able to go into one of their stores and buy one out right.
It shouldn't impact your account if you do.
May as well buy the international version.

I don't know but mine says the same thing, would like to know too.
The SM-G900T is definitely SIM locked. I ended up just buying the unlock code from CellUnlocker.net and amazingly they were able to get the code on launch day. Yeah, it costs money, but they came through with the code.
Also, lucky for me, since I guess I was one of the first to buy a code for the G900T, I got an email from them saying that they were looking for footage of people unlocking their GS5s, and if I could provide a video showing the full unlock process, entering the code, and activation on another network, they'd refund the purchase price. I don't know if they're still offering that, but I took advantage of it and I did indeed get my full purchase price refunded, so in effect I got my code for free. :good:

The code is $29.99. It's not cheap, but they work. That said, a SIM unlocked phone is definitely worth more on a place like eBay than one that's SIM locked, so it might be worth it.
I've always used cellunlocker when a carrier wouldnt unlock a phone for me, they've never failed me, and once again they came through earlier today with a perfectly working code. They aren't the cheapest but very reliable.

International sim unlock wasn't approved

So I went the international chat section of the Sprint website. I got in touch with a rep who looked into my account.
They said that the sim unlock need to be requested as I've unlocked my phone once in 12 months. My previous phone was an HTC One, which I called for unlocking in 6/2013.
Anyways, the request was put in..
I got an email back today stating that it wasn't approved.
This email is intended to confirm that your request to unlock your device has been received by our Back Office group and has been reviewed.
Unfortunately at this time we are unable to complete your device unlock request. The policy only allows one unlock within a 12 calendar month period. Since a device has already been unlocked during the past 12 months, no additional unlocks may be processed.

How would I go about unlocking the sim since I need to use it on my trip to Asia? Without calling Sprint.
bump
You can't, Sprint has to do it. It makes no sense to me to deny unlocking because you decided to get a new phone. I would e-mail [email protected] and [email protected] and tell them what's going on. If that doesn't get it solved, nothing will.
So the really sucks. If you buy a Sprint phone at full price, then want to unlock it, they won't if you already have asked them to unlock a phone within a year.... That's bs

Not sure if that will work. It might? I think either you have to be a Sprint Customer for a certain amount of time or you have to have the phone on your account for a certain amount of time.

Many people have had TMO unlock their device. You have to call and catch the right person and be very persuasive.

You can always simply call T-Mobile and ask for the unlock code. If they question the reason why, you can state that your going to vacations over sea's or etc.. and want to use the phone with the local service provider.
Usually if your with T-Mobile for a long period of years they will simply give you the unlock code with no questions asked upon request. That's usually what I do when I get a new phone from T-Mobile, call them and ask them for the unlock code. Never had a problem.
I haven't used any 3rd party service , but its good to know if in case someone asks.
