WiFi calling issues and massive battery drain - Sprint LG G3

I really hope I'm not the only person having this issue. Wifi calling is causing 35-40% of my battery usage on my device, even when turned off. I turned it off last week as it was extremely annoying having to constantly go into the wifi calling settings to re-set the location of my wifi network (I would have consistent wifi calling authentication errors until re-setting the location). Now even with it off and ALL authorized wifi networks removed from wifi calling I am still seeing this huge battery drain.
Anyone else see this happening on their devices? Better yet, anyone know of a fix or work around?

Check to see if connections optimizer is on. Turn it off if so.

It was on. Just turned it off. I'll report back with my findings.

My battery drain while on wifi calls has been really good. Only 5% or so for a 30 minute call. Might be that optimizer... Keep us updated!

I know I was seeing moderately bad battery life and it ended up being the optimizer. Would definitely try that first as others said.

After turning off the optimizers this morning i am so seeing 36% battery usage and 9+ hours of stay awake time on the Wi-Fi calling app. It is still disabled and the authorized list is blank. I'll try rebooting the phone and wiping cache.

This is my thread on the Sprint forums regarding wifi calling. Please add your complaints and gripes so they see how many of us are having issues with it. If we don't speak up they will think all is well.

After a full charge i am not seeing the wifi calling app on my battery usage. Looked liner it was the connections optimizer.

When I first got the phone, the WiFi calling kept giving me authentication errors and would not work, and then after a couple days the phone just shut down on me and never turned back on again, while the battery got hot. I exchanged my phone for a new one, and haven't had any problems since.
On a side note, wifi calling has allowed me to get rid of my Airave, which Sprint gave me for free about a year ago because I was getting constant dropped calls at home.

I'm getting huge battery drain and I actually stopped the process. Its using up more than my display.

After a little more investigation, it would appear that the issue was 2 fold. Connections Optimizer was causing an issue however the root of the problem appeared to be having *any* wifi networks in the authorized list even when Wifi calling was turned off. Now that the authorized network list is blank and wifi calling is disabled, it no longer shows up in battery usage and my battery life is much much better.
Reading the success of dkratter, it makes me wonder if a re-image might correct the issue. I did enable wifi calling when Sprint was having some server issues with the authentication.

Random loss of 4G service [SOLVED]

Not sure if this has been posted before, so I apologize if this is a repeated post.
I had been losing 4G service randomly over the past few days. 1X and 3G would be the the only service I would receive in places where I previously been receiving strong 4G.
The service would also return intermittently.
I have an extended battery and a standard battery, which I have been cycling through full charge / discharge.
I have Fast Boot turned off in power settings.
What I have found is that my cell network settings reset or change on their own, each time I shut down and/or do a battery pull.
Normally I have Network Mode set to LTE/CDMA and Enable Always-on mobile data is checked.
What I think is happening is that when I bring the battery down to nearly 5%, my power-saver settings shift from Performance to Normal. My LTE is then shut off and when I replace the battery with a charged one, the power saver settings remain in Normal, with LTE shut off.
I'll spend some time verifying and I guess the answer is really to not condition my batteries by discharging past 10%.
I may also be allowing this to happen by responding improperly to the low battery notification.
Hope this helps anyone experiencing loss of 4G...

Battery saver mode shuts off auto sync, 4G, and always on mobile data. You need to set battery in settings back to performance instead of normal or economy.

I actually checked that in the 4G outage thread, but two respondents from my area (NY/NJ) said there were no outages. But I think that's why it was so hard for me to troubleshoot the other reasons for my 4G loss.

There seem to be some quirks on the phone. I will see 1x to 3G to LTE (in that progression) if I have been in an underground parking garage, or maybe a weak WiFi that comes in and out. For the most part, when I see 1x or 3G, I assume verizon is having some issues. 99% of the time it just comes back. 1% or less (probably less), I toggle mobile networks.

[Q] Cell standby fix

Has anyone managed to find a fix for the cell standby battery drain? As for the people not suffering from it, what rom and kernel are you using?

has become much better since i flashed XXALF2 baseband and Franco r2 kernel. Standby (mobile data on) drop was around 4-5% per hour before, now its around 2.5% per hour
Stock LF2 no problem .

Cell standby drain cannot be confirmed by all people and is related to the 3G setup, antennas and location of your provider.
Here the network show a very bad case of hopping when switching to/from IDLE (fast dormancy) which drains the battery in no time.
I'm currently running Juicedefender Ultimate beta with AOSP helper which switches to 2G when the screen is off and no data is transferred. Only issue is that you'll loose connectivity twice (3G->2G and 2G->3G) for a very short time but other than that it seems to work fine and has solved my battery drain problem.
I've been used to switch back to 2G as soon as I don't need 3G/HSPA with my S1 as it's drain is even worse, so it's no big change for me

i conquer on this.
i do use now 2x battery saver, which does the same thing as the juicedefender, but even before that, my battery is very well managed. I would assume that the fact of cell standby being on the top of the list when you havent been using the phone for anything else is logical to be there. That IS what will be draining the battery. I would only see the problem on those handsets that this drain is not within acceptable limits, ie, whatever people have measured as normal drain for these circomstances.
I use juicedefender and with the latest update the battery drain is less than 2% an hour, im happy with that
Ive always found by the the biggest drain in standby being data always being on
That's not totally correct. Data is not what is actually draining your battery (at least it never was for me).
It's 3G not being in IDLE due to sending/receiving data, fast dormancy not being (properly) supported by the network or the network provider having a badly configured/balanced network.
If you switch to 2G, you'll find that your phone can run 2 days with data enabled if not heavily used.
Big exception seems to be Exchange's ActiveSync which is, when an account is configured (whether enabled or not) always top-of-the-list in BetterBatteryStats. But well... Exchange sucks anyway =)
I should have typed 3g data, this single act of letting the 3g connection be managed by juicedefender doubled my battery life
Yeh i have no idea for the technical reason but managing the 3g connection makes a big difference to me
hmm i am not aware of the actual network causing problems with the drain issue during 3g/2g signal. I only knew that when the signal is bad in general or you get no signal at all, then the phone is wasting too much energy trying to log on to a network itself.
i have the 3g swap on my 2x battery saver to rotate every 5min when the screen is off. Its the smallest amount of time you can apply. However i dont know if im the average phone user, as i see here lots of people doing a lot more things with their handsets during a day.
Not so sure about the 3G data thing but I'm only using the phone on wifi with data disabled and I still got the battery drain.

Wifi is another issue, especially when you have the 5Ghz band enabled and your phone hops between both. Try checking if your Wifi's channel is crowded and configuring the router to another less crowded one.
Then force your phone to use either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz band depending on your setup; drain should've gone away.

'Best WiFi Performance' Option -- Stops wireless drops

I've searched and saw a bunch of BS about this option.
Here's what I've found.
1. When you turn it on, it's beats your battery. About 4% battery drain per hour vs >1% for normal wifi from what I've seen.
2. It doesn't make your wifi 'faster'
3. What it does do, it fixes the wifi disconnect issue.
#3 expanded. Some EVOLTEs(maybe all) drop wifi when you're far away from the access point. For me it takes just being downstairs to get drops.
If I'm in the same room as the AP, no drops, don't need this option. If I'm far away from the AP and I'm playing an online game and I keep getting kicked, this option will fix that. If I had to guess at what this option does, it must turn up the broadcast strength of the wireless card.
What I've done is I made a shortcut to the wifi settings menu. 2 clicks to turn it on and off.
Turn it on when needed, off when done.
If someone made a widget for it, that would be badass.
I've found just the opposite, it actually makes my disconnect issue worse.
Found this out myself about a week ago. Fixes my issues as well.

I had that turned on for a while because it sounded pretty harmless but it KILLED my battery life. I couldn't figure out where this huge drain was coming from, I would be losing an extra 20% throughout the day and 10-15% overnight. I suppose if you're really having wifi issues it would be worth it, but IMO I would download Wifi Analyzer and see if you're having interference issues and change the wifi channel.

Toast95135, thank you for the info on this app. This fixed all my WiFi issues in my house too. I thought that mine was sharing a lot of channels with the neighbors. I was sharing the same channel with about 3 of my neighbors. No wonder I was having so many issues. My WiFi is also a lot faster.
Thanks again! I hit the ty button too. I wish I knew of this app about a year ago. :good:

Battery problems?

Hello. I picked up my s3 this morning after having charged that night. I unplugged it at about 1 in the morning, with airplane mode on, bluetooth off, and WiFi connected. When I woke up though at 10, the battery had dropped down to 80 percent while in standby, with no recent apps even running. I'm not sure if this is normal or if it's a battery problem but it's quite annoying, because it drained 20 percent in 9 hours of standby. Any help is appreciated.

Maybe caused by ~LG8 OTA combined with dual-band WiFi network?
I posted this over in another forum, but copying here to see what you all think...
..............
I don't know this for a fact, but I've read some things that lead me to believe the issue may (again, not confirmed), MAY be related to the recent ~LG8 OTA push. The root (no pun intended) cause is related to how the SG3 interacts in 802.11n band Wi-Fi networks that utilize multi-band (i.e. 2.4Ghz combined and 5Ghz running simultaneously).
One of the "features" of ~LG8 was to remove Advanced options for Wi-Fi networks, switching the connectivity logic to "automatic." If a GS3 is in a multi-band 'n' Wi-Fi network, it MAY be switching back and forth between bands, thus chewing up battery without actually pulling any data.
This is unconfirmed, so don't shoot the messenger. Can any of you validate whether or not the Wi-Fi networks where you see excessive drain is indeed a multi-band 'n' network?

This sounds like it could be a possible cause. I'll have to try out some multi band n networks in the next few days or so and see if there's any effect.

Keeping WiFi vs Off for battery life

Ever since I got my SGS3 last year, I noticed that WiFi would drain battery rather than save battery. For whatever reason I always got better battery life with WiFi off rather than on.
I noticed a lot more wake locks too. I don't know if it was because with a solid WiFi conneciton, apps tend to refresh a lot more than they normally do.
Enter the HTC One. I have noticed the same type of effects. I've only had it for 2 days but I am noticing better battery life without it.
So I want to collect some data using a poll. Do you get better battery life with it on or off?

It goes inactive, but it doesn't actually get 'turned off'. If I don't have it turned off, what happens is when my wifi goes to sleep then mobile data goes back on. I don't want that.
of course you get better battery with Wifi turned off. but doesn't Wifi consume less battery than cellular data? my balance is to keep Wifi on ANYTIME i'm in a trusted wireless network and manually toggle off cellular data when I'm using Wifi.
It burns battery when it isn't connected and on but I get better battery with it on and connected
