[Q] Ultra-Basic Questions - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have installed Ubuntu Touch on my Nexus 4. I think...or is it Ubuntu for Phones I installed? Or Ubuntu for Devices? That's my first question...are there different versions of the OS with these different names or are they all the same? I installed from the "Installing Ubuntu for Devices" page.
That leads into my second, closely-related question: Is what I installed essentially the same OS (albeit a different build, of course) that will be installed on the production phones due to hit in China etc later this year?

That's the one you want. The Ubuntu for Devices Wiki is an update of installing Ubuntu Touch. Why the name change? I don't know. It is separate from Desktop Ubuntu still. The promised convergence has not come yet. It may be that Desktop is now supporting touch? A lot of people still think of it as Ubuntu Touch which was the first version when you actually booted into CyanogenMod and ran Ubuntu on top of that as a skin. It was still Ubuntu Touch when they "flipped the container" and you booted into Ubuntu and ran the needed CyanogenMod bits inside the OS. Both of those versions are deprecated and each new version had to be flashed to the device by hand. (Quantal, Raring and Saucy.)
When the system evolved to be able to push OTA (Over The Air) updates to the devices they dropped a couple of devices from official support, rewrote the Wiki as Ubuntu for Devices and moved to the Trusty release. At this point I refer to the project as Ubuntu for Devices as that is the name on the Install Wiki... However I have seen where people inside Canonical are pushing to just call it Ubuntu in advance of the convergence which is still forthcoming... Maybe with the October release of Utopic?

[Q] Install Windows on G Tablet

hey all
is it possible to install windows 7 onto a viewsonic g tablet
i have a windows 7 bootable key just unsure how to get the device to boot from it
if this is not possible and linux based os's able to be installed.
thanks
ARM based processors (which the tegra 2 is) are not supported yet (Win7).
You'll have to wait for Windows 8 for that...then we'll have to see!!
I think Viewsonic's dual boot Windows7/Android tab uses an Intel Atom processor.
so is it possible to boot from a usb key though?
Sure its possible. But I highly doubt you or anyone here is going to undertake the task of modifying windows in order to work properly the ARM processor on the Gtab

At this point no.
Win7 code is not ARM compatible. Intel & ARM based processors use different code. That's why the Viewsonic dual boot tab uses an Intel Atom instead of a Tegra.
Even when Win8 is out, somone would have to develop the dual boot capable bootloader to select between the 2 OS's.
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this to happen in the near future (if ever)!!!! By the time this is even a possibility most will have moved on to the latest/greatest device out. Can't wait for the quad-core Tegra devices which probably would be much more capable of running Win8 than the current Tegra2s.
I think that "we have a dream!!" VS is pushing away the new customers from gtablet, so after a few weeks the most developers will support someone other tablet. AND there are a lot of them!!
Windows 7 is a no go, but I was able to install WinCe on a cheapy Chinese Android tablet I previously had, not to sure if that can be done on the G-Tab.

[Q] Bootload Android 1.6 on LG enV Touch?

The enV touch does match the required hardware for Android to run, but my question is would it be possible to dual boot on Qaulcomm's Brew devices? Like booting Android from a micro SD of at least 2-4gbs instead of booting the Brew OS on the phone. Does anyone believe this is possible? What if it was a tethered boot so the phone has to be plugged in when it boots up.

That would be cool if it did run android.
I got one of these phones from a friend and I'm going to mess around with this over the summer.
I'll probably not succeed, but I do know a good deal about Linux, so there's always a chance.
I'll post something here if I get anything.

Fastboot and Win 8.1 Here

Okay, so you installed Win 8.1 and are having driver issues. You are not alone, 8.1 does not recognize your phone, so what to do right? Do you want to wait until HTC releases a driver that works? Sure you could, but you want a fix now don't you. Well, you are left with only 2 choices. Either downgrade to Win 8 or dual boot Ubuntu, or your favorite Linux distro. I tried both, and both solutions work. So, for all the 8.1 fastboot questions, there it is. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is what it is. none of this works well, or at all on 8.1. I am back to Win 8, and it's all good again. Don't upgrade if you want to play for now.

your right but HTC has already fixed the problem it's called hboot 1.55. If your already s-off and on hboot 1.55 windows 8.1 is no problem at all. getting your phone to 1.55 s-off on a 8.1 pc is the problem. I had to return to windows 8 only long enough to get the newest firmware flashed and immediately returned to windows 8.1 and fastboot works fine.
Note: I use acronis true image to backup and restore my windows drive between windows 7 - 8 - 8.1, it only takes about 15-20min to fully change OS from one to the other and back. I have windows on a 120gig SSD and all my programs installed to D:\ and E:\ drives, it works really well.
Great news on the 1.55, there have been so many questions about it, I felt the need to post something to help. I wonder then if the converted GPE's that are on 1.54 will get the new Hboot. My converted Dev Edition already has it. Would certainly solve a lot of problems.

Windows 10X, could it be a possibility on the Duo?

With Windows 10X coming out and we all expected this device initially was made to run Windows, does anyone think there is a chance it could get ported to the Duo?
With the bootloader being able to be unlocked out of the box, side loading any other OS is technically possible. So it boils down to either super fans to build said Windows 10X boot image; or, we wait patiently and see if Microsoft is already planning on something.

Stuck on Windows 11 Windows Insider without any updates

I got Windows 11 when they were testing it in windows insider, even though my PC isn't eligible, they ended it and I can't and won't continue getting Latest windows 11 updates, oh I can't even leave Windows Insider without doing a clean install, so my question is how can I get on the latest Windows 11 update without the need of doing a clean install?

After seeing whole lots of forums and now knowing my i7-6700 was an unsupported CPU and I was never going to get win 11, I still signed up to the windows insider program.
Even then, I tried to install the beta from the insider program to install it and same CPU notification and installation blocked. That was about 4pm. Later in the evening about 4 hours l8r I did my usual check for updates on my win 10 and it started to DL a few 10 updates then all of a sudden said windows 11 upgrade is available, download? So I did and it installed without any hassle and really quickly as well. 30min maybe and then did a few minor subsequent updates to 11 such as security after. Compared to over an hour to do a recovery install (without deleting files option from boot media) of 10 when you're having issues. A few hours almost to install 10 if you're doing a complete wipe and install.
Now I'm sorry, but I'm not actually replying to help with your problem lol, cos I was going to do the registry edit method (but didn't end up needing to) so had already done all my backups and recent restore point just a few hours prior. Lol.
I wanted to ask is that how you got your win 11 or similar process? I only signed up to the windows insider program several hours earlier which had still said no install to my PC and all of a suddenly a fully operational and what appears to be non-buggy version became available and installed itself on my unsupported CPU PC. Now I will add, of ALL the criteria the unsupported CPU was the only factor not met when I tried to install b4. So really I'm just a bit confused how it became available, seems to be operating just fine, contrary to all advice and even discussions just hours earlier by MS moderators on official MS website saying it will never install on unsupported CPU just like that.
