Idea for Qi Charging Case - Xperia Z2 Accessories

The magnetic charging docks are not bad. Also, the qi charging case from Sony is pretty nice. However, the best case would be a plastic case with a Qi wireless coil inside with a lead that wraps around and fits over the magnetic contact. Qi chargers like the Tylt work really well and they are so handy at home and in the car. I wear a holster so the flip cover is not necessary.

Sony Cancelled the accessory.
They also removed any trace of it on their official websites.

I know, that's why I asked if maybe there are some prototype floating around

I did not mean to infer that I had one of the Sony Qi charging cases. I may have purchased one had they been available. I prefer the a slim fitting tpu or hybrid case. However, none that I have found fit correctly. Sony's magnetic charging docks are great and work fast, but one has to remove his case to use them. Yet no one makes a good case that covers up the SIM/Micro USB cover and exposes the magnetic charging area. This is totally stupid. One only seldomly changes his SIM and needs access to the micro usb port, but one always needs to charge.
If Sony is not going to add a Qi charger in the phone, they should at least make some good folio and slim fit cases at a sub $50 price that can be left on while charging using the magnetic dock.
Also, charging with a car dock is a pain without Qi charging using the Z2. The buttons are all in the wrong place also and interfere with the sides of both my car docks.
It's a real shame that Sony has not made a better attempt at charging options combined with cases. The Sony Z2 is a great phone. Even better yet woukd be a removeable battery. This is the only feature that keeps me going back to Samsung.

I have been thinking about trying this. I have dismantled a magnetic charger and there are only 2 wires in there. Positive and negative. Is there anything stopping me buying a universal micro usb qi adapter and soldering the positive and negative from that onto the positive and negative of the magnetic charger and hiding it all inside a case?

That's an interesting Idea. I've thought of the same thing, though I wanted to connect to the magnetic charger contact rather than the micro USB port. I'd like to make a case with a Qi charger and FM radio antenna built in. It wouldn't take up that much space.
I hope someone at Sony is watching this thread.

I for one actually feel a bit cheated.
The did announce Qi charging capability through a case and plate and while I had to choose between the S5/M8/Z2, this was one of the element that I considered...
Now all of a sudden they decide to cancel...

Though I would much prefer a Qi charger, the magnetic chargers can be useful. I bought some cheap magnetic charging cables and cut some of the plastic off them so they would work with my phone's case on. The magnets are weak and it s a pain to get them attached but of charges quite fast.
I was hoping that the Z3 would come out of the gate with wireless charging. In a statement made a few months back, they stated they would have Qi charging by the end of this year.
Hopefully the Z4 will have it. They also need to put 32 GB of internal storage in their phones.

If someone made a QI charging case, I'd be willing to pay for it, as long as it looked good enough!

might be worth testing out to see if the WCR14 connector and charging type works on a Z2. i can see the connector alone makes the phone look much bigger.
Why sony decided to put a magnetic charge on the side is beyond me.

Did anybody get any where with this? I am thinking about getting one of the coils on ebay for the samsungs and modifying it, they look very slimline as I suppose they are design to fit behind the battery cover?
I am planning to have it sit inside a TPU case I have. The difficult part will be the magnetic part / Soldering....etc

[Review] Generic Ebay desktop Charging dock + battery dock, sort of work w/ TPU case

Got my order from HK
This is exact item that I got
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230644510493
Overall I just wanted a charging dock for my night stand, this does the job.
Some items of notes
1) It does fit a TPU case, but the charging tip is sort of in between the correct length for TPU case or no case. a bit too long for no case, can see a gap between base and phone, a bit not quite long enough for TPU case, with case on have to make sure to press down firmly and to double check the phone is actually charging, any thicker than the one I got and may not be able to charge. edit: This is mainly due to the locking spring on the charging tip, being not quite 100% inserted, the spring is pushing the phone up and out of the tip instead of locking the phone in, You can make it charge more reliably by bending down or removing the locking springs on the charging tip.
---
Also, with no case the back as seen from the pictures have a gap, so the phone is basically standing up supported by the charge port. I don't think this is a good idea long term as it put stress on the charge port. edit: However after sleeping on it, it dawn to me that you can easily mod the dock by adding some foam padding to give it a more snug fit and better support.
2) left and right side don't have rounded guide/support like the iGrip car dock that allow you to slide the phone in easily, you have to be careful lining up the charging tip and the charge port yourself.
3) To charge the phone, the attached USB A cable end must be either connect to a charger or a computer.
To charge the battery the mini USB port on the back of the dock need to be connect to a charger (provided) or a PC.
This took me a while to figure out why my phone won't charge with the charger plugged into the mini USB port.
4) pulled the sticker on the Galilio 2000mah battery, just like another forum poster confirmed that underneath the sticker, its got 1000mah marked on the metal housing of the battery itself
5) There's a version of this dock without the battery charger, its also a little bit cheaper
6) It does not activate dock mode
Nice, thanks for posting pics. I ordered the dock with 2of the Galilio batteries. Sucks they are only 1000mah, but I guess it will do as a backup in a crunch...

Do you see this working with a Commuter Case by chance?
I don't have a commuter case, so can't confirm one way or another, i can only say if the case is similar thickness is TPU case, it should work, if its thicker than TPU cases, it probably either won't fit the back (back is about 1mm clearance with TPU case, but can tilt/lean so it touch the dock for support), or the charging tip won't be long enough if the side is too thick. Judging from the otterbox picture of the commuter case, I "think" it should fit as it seem similar thickness to TPU
Bah. Too bad it doesn't activate dock mode.

I'm doing some research on this issue, its either a magnet or adding a resistor to certain pins in the charging tip to activate dock mode. not quite sure which yet for our phone

Adding wireless charging & magnets?

The Nexus 5/7 has Qi charging built-in and will stick to the magnetic Nexus Wireless Charging Pad.
I have seen this for the Note 3 that will add Wireless charging: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GMRXD9U/
and this magnetic car dock that comes with a metal plate: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DPMNNUO/
Is it possible to add both to the Note 3 without changing to a thicker battery cover?
I would like to know also. Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance..
I just spoke to another user via PM.
Apparently the nGroove Snap holds the phone pretty well using just the official Samsung Wireless Charging Cover, without an additional metal plate. Looking at pics online, i can see that there's some more metal in that cover, maybe that's why it works.
I had also read about people putting the metal plate behind their batteries - but I have no idea how thick it actually is.
The second one is good.
anyone knows of a similar pass through coil in Uk, i mean ebay UK or amazon.

Sony Charging Dock

Looks like Sony once again bring out a charging dock tailored for the new flag ship named DK36
http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/products/accessories/magnetic-charging-dock-dk36/
I wonder if we removed the cable from the DK31 dock it will fit the magnetic ports on the Z2?
This is the first design flaw I've spotted with the Z2. The dock actually blocks a little part of the screen. The dock makes it a very good mini television and this kind of ruins it. Hope this isn't the case and this isn't the final product.
I emailed Sony about the dock, they say that the z1 dock will not work on the z2. I assume they mean that the pins won't align

It seems the thickness of two phone is different that why the z1 dock will not work on the z2.
I found some magnetic chargers sold on line are compatible with Z1, Z1C and Z2.

I don't see that problem at all. Right now, My Z2 is sitting in the charging dock and the lip is a fraction below the margin of the bezel leaving the entire screen visable.

Generic Dock from Amazon
I bought this generic one from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JE81AJE
Works perfectly and even has a different width receiver for when you fit a case on to the Z2 and it's half the price. Recommended :good:
I've sent mine back to Amazon, the dock charger only works when plugged into the wall socket, it doesn't charge the phone (or provide any connection whatsoever) when plugged into a USB port. Maybe it's obvious for everyone else, but it wasn't for me.
Also, this 30 euro accessory is just a small piece of plastic, you don't even get a USB cable in the package. Sony is charging way too much for this.
I'm now hoping for a third-party dock that will be able to connect and charge via USB.
I can't use either of my cases with the dock. So had to order the official Sony case (through I hate cases like that). Gutted that I can't use a thin gel case on it, in the dock!

Does the SCR10 case fit the dock? I know it should because they are both officially from Sony, but it seems a bit weird to fit it.
I have the SCR10 and wondering to buy the DK36, but I don't want it if I have to take of the cover.

Yup. It does fit without problems.
Are there any 3rd party cases that fit? I really hate cases like the official Sony one, but have ordered it purely to protect the device, even though I hate the style. Every gel case I have purchased from eBay or Amazon does not fit...

This is exactly the same with the dock from the Xperia Z - completely overpriced and they don't advertise that it must use a high-current charger, 500mA from a USB port won't work.
At least they should include a power adapter + cable. The dock has to contain about $1 worth of materials, if even that.

Agree the dock is wildly overpriced

Thought it would be nice to post here as well. Not sure if you're aware of this: Anyone thinking about cases and the dock, it has a removable part that, when removed, lets you insert the phone with many kinds of cases.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DK36-Charging-Dock-Smartphone/dp/B00HWUQEZQ/ref=pd_cp_computers_0
Here you can see the "seamline" which is the removable part. It is also stated in the description. Just to let you know in case you didn't already.
Brilliant invention!!!

I can assure you it does not go into the dock if you wanted that. And there are full length cables that do the same thing (at least I think the magnetic charging cables fit with a case), saves the hassle of an adapter. If you can justify getting it, then nice find mate.

Z3 adapter for magnetic charging dock dk39

How long will it take till someone starts selling this simple plastic piece on ebay? I have a z2 tablet with charging dock dk39 and I don't want to buy dk48. They are the same thing except that plastic part which is already made as interchangeable. So why it is not available anywhere yet? I wish I had a 3D printer...
I'd like to know as well, same issue here with the DK39.
You can purchase those fake dk-48 from ebay. It comes with the adaptor.. Whether it fits or not is another question.

Some updates from the dk-48 I bought from ebay. It comes with 34A, 34B (most width), 45A (least width) and 45B.
I use 34B with casing and 45A without casing.
Guys I figured out a way to make the DK39 work for the Z3: just take the included adapter, flip it upside down and lay it over the back and top of the slot. The connection isn't perfect but it is stable enough to get a charge for the Z3.
Just got my dk48 today. Has anyone done any charge tests to see how long it takes to charge using that than the usual plug in charger?

Case for the S8 that is compatible with wireless charging and magnetic car mount.

Hello,
Im lokking for the case that does it all. That you can use on a magnetic car mount and also on a wireless charger stand.
I bought these one, https://store.exelium.net/en/galaxy-s8/189-galaxy-s8-wireless-charging-case.html
And it does all of that perfectly, but the case it self i dont like it because it feels and is slippery on the hands.
Do you know of something similar? or have any recomendation?
Thanks.
I just bought this:
https://www.ipitaka.com/collections/aramid-case-for-samsung-galaxy-s8
I can confirm that wireless charging works with the case on. I also just ordered the magnetic mount, just waiting on it to arrive.
edit:
Here's a post with pics:

The Pitaka case works with wireless charging and magnetic mount. I think the metal in the case is shaped like a ring which allows wireless charge to pass through.
Slightly off topic. Has anyone been able to find a good wireless charger for the car? Air vent chargers have unsightly cables in the car which I really tend to avoid. What I would ideally like is a wireless charger that is like a cup holder style, has a sticky pad on and is quick charge compatible.
I just dont get why there is a gap in the market for something like that.
Once again, wishlist:
1. Cup holder style wireless charger
2. Sticky pad so that the phone stays in place (Can consider magnetic as well, but will need a case with that)
3. Quick charge
4. Hide wires somewhere
