Root & Install TWRP Custom Recovery AFTER Kit Kat Update - Lenovo P780

There Are Many Fine Developers Out Here That Have perfected the art of installing CWM / TWRP & Rooting.
I am merely collating the knowledge here for: Lenovo P780 8GB ROW 221 (Kit Kat Update Applied)
Please Note Once Again: I updated the P780 to Kit Kat WITHOUT Rooting And TWRP / CWM Installed
The Kit Kat Update is Great & as mentioned here, the update ONLY Works On Original Recovery. Hence Someone PLEASE Share Original Recovery For Lenovo P780 8GB Kit Kat For Future Updates :fingers-crossed:
Now Getting Back To Rooting & Installing Recovery
Steps:
Download ALL Prerequisites From HERE
You will end up having:
SP Flash Tool
TWRP Recovery
Scatter File
Superuser.zip
Copy SuperUser And TWRP To The Micro SD Card or External Storage of the Phone.
However, instead of: Installing TWRP-> Rooting By Flashing SuperUser.......... I followed another widely known & simple Technique: MobileUncle Tools.
**********************************************************************************************
PLEASE Ensure You Install ALL Drivers Correctly. Especially The Preloader Driver
This LINK Contains the Preloader Driver. But Following is The Correct Procedure:
Switch Off Phone
Remove Battery Door.
You will see a very small RED button near the Micro SD Card slot. Press it for two seconds.
Now connect the phone & your Windows PC will report Unable to install Driver.
Go To Device Manager & Select The one Question Mark Preloader & Go to update driver manually & select the driver downloaded.
Your Preloader Driver Should Install correctly. DO NOT PROCEED unless your Preloader Driver is installed correctly.
*****************************************************************************************************************
As you must have guessed, MobileUncle Tools Require Root Access, So I went for Rooting First.
Used Geno Or Root Genius: LINK
Download the EXE & run. It will update itself & English Interface will begin. There is a single button: ROOT. Press It
A couple Prompts on your Phone will appear, Accept them & your Phone Will Now Get Rooted
After Rooting Install MobileUncle Tools from Play Store
Run It, Grant Root Privileges & Select 'Recovery Update'
Now Select The TOPMOST Recovery.img (This Recovery is TWRP Recovery Stored Locally)
MobileUncle Tools Should Install TWRP Recovery And Then Ask You To Boot Into Recovery. Do So to confirm

Hi,
I tried youtube and google to find how to use GENO, but no luck.
The issue is obvious, its in Chinese. I would be grateful if you please help me or give instructions to use GENO with my P780.
My ROM is LATEST one P780_ROW_8G_S223_140901.
I am using windows 8.1 PRO
I have installed preloader drivers successfully.
I also tried Root Genius. It failed but I guess it has installed "Kinguser", which I can not uninstall.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

No IMEI, No Baseband, No Backup? - SOLUTION ~ Soft Bricked from No IMEI, No Baseband, No RIL, No WiFi MAC, BT MAC, comms etc.
DISCLAIMER:
*What you done to your phone is at your OWN RISK, you choose to do this modifications to your phone and don't blame me if anything goes wrong.
Preface:
Recently I have noticed many people who tried to flash Custom ROM's on P780 and causes the phone to lose IMEI, Baseband, RIL, WiFi MAC, BT MAC, SN, comms etc. and causes connectivity issues (including me), which renders our phone turned into a "AndroidPod" media device that cannot make calls, SMS etc. As an example, my phone which faced the exactly same problem.

See the IMEI and baseband are still there in factory mode!!!
What could cause this is problem to occur is probably during ROM flashing process, the installer probably wiped out the /data/nvram (folder/partition). The /data/nvram (folder/partition) is the heart of your phone of all communicating feature, if the (folder/partition) is corrupted, just like I said, no communication features.
*Actually the baseband is there, but because the /nvram (folder/partition) has corrupted, the Android OS were unable to recognize it thus showing Unknown.
So no backup = Phone dead? Nothing but a media player?
First step, ensure your phone:
On Stock ROM
Rooted
PC have ADB drivers installed (If you don't have it please ask Uncle Google :good
Well, that isn't true, recently I found out, the phone can actually be easily recovered (on most MediaTek devices) and gain at least those comm features back by simply delete the whole /nvram (folder/partiton). If your phone coldn't recognize SIM card, wait a while after deleted the folder, your phone should have signal after maximum 10 seconds of waiting.
*In most of the cases MobileUncleTools give AT command failed to send probably the /nvram folder is corrupted, simply delete the NVRAM folder and reboot will do.
For WiFi MAC address fix (WiFi NVRAM WARNING: ERR 0x10), because the solution already been posted, so please click here.
Bluetooth MAC address fix: Firstly, using any File Explorer with Root abilities navigate to /data/nvram/APCFG/APRDEB/BT_Addr and also a BT_Addr file under /data, then copy both files to your PC. Then open up the file by using Hex Editor (HHD Hex Editor). To fix a static MAC address, just simply type in your MAC address on the first row (0000) from column (00-05). That is what your MAC address should be (Edit both files with the same MAC address). After you have modified it, put it back in the exact location and remember to change permission.
Actually you can also get restore your IMEI, WiFi MAC, BT MAC, SN by restoring a backup created by MTKDroidTools with other exact same model as your phone.

If not working after you've reflash the ROM, try delete the /nvram folder. Make a backup of the folder first with MTKDroidTools before delete!!!. (Although it is corrupted)

5) Does it have Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection? And if then do i need screen protector?
Ans-Xiaomi confirmed that Devices sold on First sale of Mi3 W in India have Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection but they never confirmed after that.Earlier they said Mi3 comes with Two Types of protection- A)Corning Gorilla Glass 3 B) Dragon-trail .But i received on first sale and i can feel it have Corning Gorilla Glass 3.But from my opinion you should use screen protector even if there is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Solution for those who are facing assert failed error
I was facing assert failed error so i followed below steps:
Extract recovery.img from the update.zip file.
Download fastboot download minimal adb and fastboot if you don't have it.
Keep the recovery.img in the same folder as fastboot resides
Download superuser update package and keep it in storage
Turn of the phone and press volume down +power then connect device to pc
Let it download drivers from windows update
Then using command promo navigate to the fastboot folder and type this command
fastboot boot recovery.img
Nothing will happen for few seconds on device then cwm will boot
After that flash superuser package using install zip option.
Reboot and enjoy your have rooted device.
P.S this will not install cwm permanently

I double-checked even triple-checked the address in MiFlash tool. It is correct.
The point to be noted here is that the error message is seeking the file "flash_all_except_storage.bat" in the Images folder in the decompressed ROM Directory. Is there any such file in the Images folder? I could not find it in the Images folder when I decompressed the ROM.

If you do not see that .bat file in the decompressed folder then just choose any of the available .bat files there.
Just take note that the flash_all.bat will wipe the phone, the other one will keep the current files and will just flash (dirty install) the ROM.

As you said, you can not install an OTA update if you have rooted the phone and/or you have made changes in system files, you need to restore the system (not a factory reset) to its original stated. You need stock recovery too.
You can use Flash Tool to flash the original ROM from Zopo, but be sure you uncheck the USERDATA mark if you don't want to loose your files/programs/configuration...... Once you have the original system back, you have to apply all the OTA's until you reach the last 20151016.
Once you are in the last version make sure to backup boot.img and system before you root the phone again, so next time you can only restore using that backup instead of flash the original Rom, so you only will need apply the last OTA.
If you want to use it, I made a bakcup from the last 20151016 system and boot using Flash Tool > Read Back optión, so if you flash this backup you will have your system updated directly.
https://mega.nz/#!xVpglLIL!uo6Bik6LO5aHiFuPxG5HH0fxGytXUhiPDuXofxDul2Q
Just unzip the files and use Flash Tool to flash the needed files (boot.img, system.img and trustzone.bin) using the scatter file included to make it less confusing. (Speed 7, not for Speed 7 Plus).
Regards.
Thank you elperroderoke, i have used your backup with no problem, the strange thing though is that the update had to solve "third part launcher is not setted after restart" but i've the same problem after every phone restart i lost about half number of icon on launcher.
New update
Hi elperroderoke, there is another update, can you give me your updated backup as last time?
Thank you

This phone can be very simply rooted with NewKingrootV4.52_C127_B227_xda_release_2015_09_28_105243.apk
After doing that you would like to remove kinguser and related files, and replace it with the well known SuperSU.
Run the script given here: http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html

Redmi note 2 downgrade/upgrade problem

Hi folks!
I hope somebody can help me out with downgrade issue on my redmi note 2. I succesfully upgraded my phone to stable 7.0.7 MIUI from Miui 66.77.33. but found problems regarding traanslation and etc...
I can't downgrade the phone back to 66.77.33 version, tried using installed "mi recovery", adb tools, fastboot, mi-flash, and even tried SP flash tool.
I can't Root the phone. tried i think every single instructions on forums and still i can't get to install twrp and supersu.
Sp flash tool keeps disconnecting so that's not possible (with the right drivers installed), otherwise it would be easy to do it. I can't find the stable fastboot rom to use mi flash.
Phone boots back to Miui 7, or gives me driver signature failed, update.zip not working.
It only worked one time when upgrading to miui 7.
I would like to install 66.77.33. or Hermes global Miui 7, but whatever i do i can't get it to work.
Can somebody please isntruct me how to do downgrade. (on youtube and other foums it looks easy but all those are not working for me, don't know where is the problem)
Is it possible that new stable miui 7 has some kind of protection...
Try downgrade by fastboot

Can you give me directions how to exactly do it jus to see if i am doing something wrong.

This method no need to used pc.
1) downloaded china dev rom: http://en.miui.com/extra.php?mod=rom/download&r=274&mobile=no or choose the older version, saved it to your internal sd card/phone storage and renamed it to update.zip. boot into mi recovery and flashed it. Once completed. Your phone will be rooted.
2) extract this: twrp287RM note2_update.zip to a folder, inside you will have twrp.img, copy this to the external sd card or phone statage. Run flashify(play store) and granted root permission in security application. Run flashify to flash recovery img which was twrp.img just mention above. Then you will have twrp recovery.
3) boot up system and used any file explorer with root access like root explorer. Then go to system folder to rename recovery-from-boot.p to recovery-from-boot.bak else upon reboot your recovery will changed back to mi recovery.
4) Run sdFix(play store) and reboot which enabled to write to sd card.
5) if you preferred stable rom, you can used twrp to flash it and remember also flashed UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip which can be downloaded from chainfire site. This will ensure your stable rom with root.
China dev rom without google application, you can downloaded through flashify, I was using this: gapps-lp-20141109-signed-5.0.zip and flashed by twrp.
You can also flashed xiaomi.eu multi languaged rom from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=40163
Sorry for my bad English and I hope this will solved your problem.

twrp link: http://en.miui.com/thread-152550-1-1.html?mobile=2, previously we can flashed by mi recovery, but now not working, so need to used my above post's method.

Also I had save a good hint from one of the post here: " You obviously didn't read the thread. The instructions works only for those on developer ROM which has root access. If you are on stable ROM you need to do the following:
1) Download supersu.zip and transfer the file to your phone's internal memory
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
2) Download the twrp287.zip from this thread. Rename it to update.zip, transfer it to your phone and install through the updater app. (Not working now)
3) The updater app will reboot your phone automatically when the installation is complete. Once the screen turned off, quickly hold the volume-up button to enter recoevery. You will see TWRP recovery.
4) While in TWRP, flash the supersu.zip to get root access. Reboot your phone once done.
5) Once your phone rebooted into android again, use any file explore with root access to delete recovery-from-boot.p or renamed to recovery-from-boot.bak from system folder.
6) Your TWRP should work from now on and persist through reboots.
Hope you managed to get it working. The material interface rocks!"

Followed every single thing you wrote me, but it keeps entering Mi recovery and not twrp. It seems like mission impossible.
Ok! I would like to thank you for all your effort guiding me. Unfortunately i couldn.t do it. But managed to install multi lang rom from Hermes.
This is what i did. I often find that people don't write solution to their problems so i will write it now for naybody who needs help.
1. Downloaded fastboot ROM hermes_images_V6.7.11.0.LHMCNCH_20150826.0000.7_5.0_cn_13ba732702
2.. Enter into fastboot mode (hold Volume-down button and press Power button), when logo appears immediately release power button and it will show fastboot.
3. Download Miflash tool http://en.miui.com/a-234.html and open Miflash
4. Press browse and navigate to a folder where hermes_images_V6.7.11.0.LHMCNCH_20150826.0000.7_5.0_cn_13ba732702 is.
5. Press F5 to refresh, after refresh it should show under device some kind of numbers which represent your phone.
6. Tick "Flash all" (don't forget you will get error if your folder anywhere has spaces between words. It has to be like this "stockrom" not "stock rom".
7. Press Flash, when complete, reboot your phone
8. Download WinDroid Universal Android Toolkit v2.5
9. Download xiaomi.eu_multi_hermes_V7.0.6.0.LHMCNCI_v7-5.0
10. Follow windroid Universal toolkit (first flash twrp and then supersu) Phone has to be connected.
11. When flashing new multi lang rom, while phone is connected press Sideload ZIP and navigate to a folder where you saved new ROM.
12. Follow directions and that's it.
13. When finished, the phone will boot and you will see a small line on the bottom progressing. Wiat till completed and voila you have new multi lang stable ROM downgraded/upgraded from Chinese only Miui.
14. Don't worry if phone (touch screen) gets stuck while flashing new ROM via sideload. Wait till finished and you can pull out battery and then boot.
Thanks Timberwolf 60
Flashed twrp.img again by flashify, then you will be good

Hi luky_zd!
1. First thing you need to do is download fastboot ROM from my previous post (1). That "hermes_images_V6.7.11.0.LHMCNCH_20150826.0000.7_5. 0_cn_13ba732702". This file you will use with Miflash to downgrade to Miui 6. (Miui 7 obviously has a problem entering and installing TWRP, i don't know why). But once you downgrade to Miui 6 you will have no problem installing TWRP.
2. Once you download fastboot ROM, enter fastboot mode on your Redmi Note 2 (press volume down button and then Power button, When your phone vibrates release power button and you will enter into fastboot mode. You will see a little guy with hat on and it will write on Redmi note 2 screen fastboot.
3. Connect your phone via usb to PC.
4. Run Miflash tool, in some cases it's Miphone but it is the same thing (follow links on my post).
5. In Miflash click "browse" and navigate where you saved "hermes_images_V6.7.11.0.LHMCNCH_20150826.0000.7_5. 0_cn_13ba732702" fastbbot ROM. Be carefull not to have spaces in folder.Example if you saved fastboot rom into "New folder", rename it to Newfolder. Folder Must not have spaces between words, otherwise Miflash will give you error.
6. When you pointed to correct folder, press F5 to refresh Miflash and then it will show your phone (they will be somekind of numbers, but that is your phone.
7. In Miflash select radio button "Flash all" and click Flash. It will flash Miui v.6 to your phone and when finished you have downgraded your phone to Miui 6 from Miui 7.
Next steps are for flashing TWRP and supersu.
1. Power up your phone
2. Connect phone via usb to pc.
3. Start Windroid Universal Android Toolkit (i used v2.5.)
4. If connected ok, it will read "Online" (if not Choose Xiaomi and all the way to the bottom is Redmi Note 2)
5. While your phone is still powered on, click on "Flash TWRP" and follow instructions. Just press Ok.
6. When in TWRP (you don't have to check anything just "swipe to install". It will reboot the phone back to normal state. After that is finished then in Windroid choose Flash Supersu.
7. When that is done, your phone is rooted. When in TWRP Supersu is located in (i forgot now but either in install or advanced menu)
8. And after that when you boot back to phone next step is
9. in Windroid click "Commands" and then "Sideload ZIP" and you will enter into TWRP mode again and just navigate where you saved xiaomi.eu_multi_hermes_V7.0.6.0.LHMCNCI_v7-5.0. Twrp will do the rest. When its finished just reboot your phone and that's it.
10. Don't worry if your screen locks while flashing sideload zip (mine did also). When it's finished just take the battery out (but only when finished) and power your phone and that's it.
11. Your phone has multilanguage miui v.7.0.6.
stomas30 thank you very much for all your effort and infos!! i downloaded all from list above and in couple of days i will try that.
once again thank you

While you run windroid, goto setting to selected redmi note 2. Also need to enable usb debugging in dev option. This was the easier method to root the phone. Before using windroid, in order to get root, I will flashed a china dev rom, then used flashify to flash twrp(2.8.6). img. With twrp to flash any global rom and flashed superSU to gain root.

Total Update of Software - Newby

Hey Guys!
I bought my phone on internet. I have it already for aprox. 3 years. I can remember that they wrote things in their text that GPS fix, Root and so on is already done. I didn't know anything about this and my only hope was that it would work in Europe. So... it worked but some things didn't to 100%. It was ok for me. (No Youtube Update possible and so on...) So... now I want to check if I can give my phone some new Software or Updates. But I have no experience with this...
I saw some Apps like SuperSU and MobileUncle and I think my Version is 4.4.2. KitKat?
Which Mod I have? I don't know...
I want and need some help from you how I can check this. Maybe I need a step by step instruction. I don't know what I should search or look for because I don't know anything about this topic. But I want to do this and I have endurance (of PC experience).
So... would be nice if anyone have this patience!
Thanks

Hi.
First thing that you need to to do is to check your version of the firmware and tell us here. For this you must go to settings/about the phone. Maybe you can upload one printscreen.
After that we will see what is to be done.

OK... I read your first post and downloaded these files. Then I tried to do it step by step...
"
1. Connect your phone to your PC and install phone drivers correctly. - I took "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.65.zip"
2. Copy superuser.zip or SuperSU on your SDCARD. Remember: only one is good. DO NOT FLASH BOTH. Flash the one you like.
3. Disconnect your phone from PC.
4. Extract files from TWRP 2.7.1.1 or the newest one TWRP 2.8.4.0 rev 2 archive on some folder on your PC.(Remember the folder ) - I took "Baralajbi_v2.0_TWRP_v2.8.4.0_rev2_CN"
5. In your folder that you extracted your archive you should find recovery.img and one scatter file.
6. Now you must have this FlashTool - SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1304.0.119 or SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1352.01. Not Optional. - I took "SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1352.01"
7. Power Off your phone.
8. After power off your phone open FlahTool and browse for the scatter file your folder where are the recovery.img and scatter file.
9. Now comes the tricky part .
10. Load the scatter file and mark DA DL with check sum in SP Flash Tool v3. In SP Flash Tool v 5 dont need. They are allready selected. Recovery.img should appear checked. - I started Tool v5 and loaded the scatter file and the recovery was checkd"
10.1. I have updated the post with some custom scatter files for 4GB and 8GB Firmware. Iff you get diferent errors when you flash the recovery file use this custom scatter files.
11. Press Download NOT FIRMWARE UPGRADE.
12. Now, just now plug the cabble on your phone. Download should start and a green circle should appear. - Didn't appeared"
13. After this you should have custom recovery TWRP installed.
14. Then boot directly to recovery your phone by pressing power with vol + and vol - butons together. Not Optional! - Nothing happend, didn't start
"
I tried it with scatter of 4 GB but it was the same error or nothing happend.
Do I have to load the scatter an then check the recovery extra?
Don't know what to do... Sorry
And... now my phone says "insufficient storage" but I should have enough on SD card or built in...
Try to use SP Flash Tool v3

Thank you. So I did this steps... First it seems like it won't operate because Driver installation was ok, flashing with ver.5 was ok but TWRP made an error. I tried the TWRP again with flashing tool ver.3 and then it was ok. Then I wanted to start with power and +/-. (It never operate before). First it doesn't worked it booted normal. Then I tried a second and then I came into this TWRP and reboot to system.
So I think it worked. What do you mean?
What are the next steps now?
Hi.
Now because you have an old firmware, you can try custom firmware that is updated.
I recommend you something like this:
1. Insert one as card in your phone and do one full backup of your current system.
2. Download MIUI custom do. The latest on the site.
3. Enter TWRP do one full wipe after backup. Not options.
4. Install MIUI.
5. If you don't like... try other firmware.
6. Good luck.

3. Enter TWRP do one full wipe after backup. Not options.
4. Install MIUI.
5. If you don't like... try other firmware.
6. Good luck.

OK, done. Thank you so far for this.
So it seems to be ok and that it is working.
This is it? Or are there any other things to do further?
