[Q] GS4 Root Sept. 29

I've been trying to root my phone and nothing is working.
My first try was through motochopper but it gave me some failure message and it seems like everyone is having the same problem. I have the superuser app but every time I try to open it, it says its out of date but it won't let me update. I read some comment on youtube and it said that it's because of the July update that the motochopper method won't work anymore.
I have not tried the twrp method that is on xda because I don't have a micro sd adapter, I dont know if that's the one that I should try but if anyone has recently rooted a Verizon GS4 and could direct me to a video or thread that would be awesome.
I really want to root my phone!!! Please help, this unrooted phone is holding me back from the wonders of root!
The rooting method you need to use depends on which stock rom you have now.

How do I check which stock rom I have?
System Settings/More/About Phone/Build version. It should end in either ME7 or MDK.

Yes since Verizon patched the loki workaround. Be sure to follow the link below though for root on me7.

Keep in mind you will not be able to install a custom recovery on ME7. This also means that you will not be able to install a custom rom at the present.

Mj4 update

Can we still root with the software update mj4 or do we have to wait on a new root file.

1. Take the update after flashing back to stock to get it
2. Download and Save to phone either stock rooted ROM or or any other rooted ROM
3. Odin TWRP, when it reboots hold volume up/home to boot into recovery
4. Wipe and flash rooted ROM
This is how I did it and works well. If your trying to keep the knox flag from tripping this is not the method you wanna use.

Yes. Not the KNOX Safe ROOT method though, once you trip the binary counter it is considered permanent.

To clarify. You can still use the knox safe methods if your knox is already flipped. It just won't reset the knox. However if your flipped already you might as well use cf auto and twrp

I did not see any OTA update for my phone? Can you do System update (did not work) or have to wait for OTA?

Glad to hear it worked smoothly for you! I'm about to do the same.
EDIT: Smoothly re-Rooted
I can also confirm IO Root worked like a charm after this update.
So best thing to do is return to stock the re-root??
I was stock rooted. Took the update. Re rooted. That's all.

Just letting you all know that one of the changes it makes is to enable lte bands 26 and 41
another is it removed twrp as my recovery and replaced it with the stock recovery.

Guys...it takes like a minute to reroot using iorootv11. Just do it after the OTA update. There is no point of trying to use apps to try to preserve root when it is so simple.
Any chance we'll see a TWRP flashable version of stock ZV8? I'd use the LG tool to start over, update to ZV8, root, etc., but then I'd have to apply all the xposed mods, set things how they were etc. I tried flashing stock recovery, then doing the update the normal way, but it led to a bootloop and didn't work.
Edit - Or can someone tell me how they flashed stock recovery, where I can get the recovery, and whether or not it worked? I got my stock recovery zip from a Sprint user in the the TWRP thread, but could only flash it via flashify. Flashing the zip via TWRP would not work.

You wont be able to install the frimware unless your device status reads official ( menu- setting- about phone- status ). So unfortunately you will either have to wait for a modified version of the firmware or revert back to stock with odin tar and then take the OTA update.
Yes smn-9005 is what most of us on NABD (& NAB ) used to root our phones.

Do you lose the engineering bootloader?
You can also flash with Odin either philz or twrp. ... Keep in mind this rom will reflash stock recovery. .. so uncheck auto reboot in Odin and boot into twrp or Philz using vol up home and power and flash su zip
This has a kit kat bootloader that as of right now is not ! Not! !!!! Not !!!! Able to Downgrade .... so once you have nab you can't use any 4.3 roms. ...

Same here. I'll wait for Kingo to support KitKat.
Does flashing the unroot tar wipe the device, or at least the apps? I assume that method does not trip Knox 0x0?
hmmm

As I said, my phone DOES read official, thanks to Wanam Xposed. I don't get any "modified" error message when I look for updates, just "the latest updates have already been installed". Do I need to undo Kingo and Wanam or has the update just not reached the DFW area yet?
Sorry

I misread that, try running the xposed framework disabler, reboot, and try to redownload the software. If you get the message " your device is up to date', then it probably means it hasnt rolled out to your area yet.
I tried this but the phone just boot looped when it said it was booting into recovery after flashing the tar....

I'm not interested in rerooting after updating but I would like to see what the new kit Kat is like... Thanks for replays beforehand you guys are the best

Flash back to stock recovery and use supersu paid to keep its root... Worked fine just make sure you are unlocked and s_off when u update so if something happens you can ruu back to 4.3.. glad I was!!! If you have the tether hack it will not work.. just to let you know
