[Q] Which LTE Frequency band is my phone connected to - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched all around the web and I cant find a way to check what frequency band my phone is using
for Samsung phones just dial *#0011# and you can find that info, iPhones also have a way, but I haven't found a way to determine this in my Xperia Z2.
does anyone knows any way?
any app or something?
terminal command?
(4.4.2 Stock rom)
note: I want this because my carrier (Orange DO) is going to change their LTE band (and they're doing some test sometimes) and I want to know which band are they testing.

it doesn't shows the values for EARFCN,
they're all N/A :crying:

BTW, the app says: "All the data we obtain is volunteered by users", so I don't have the values because no-one posted it earlier
anyone else knows a way?

Sorry haven't been able to work with any Orange users to map out their LTE bands yet. If you get a phone that can access the *#0011* menu (or can grab a friends phone whose can) hit me up at [email protected] and I'll be able to bake support for Orange into the application.
I want to add support for all the Canadian and UK carriers but it's been hard to find volunteers in other countries to work with.

I don't know the exact UL/DL frequencies right now, but orange is using band 3 for LTE, and 900 for 3g / GSM / EDGE
the point is, they're on a process of migration from that LTE band, they're waiting (among other things I guess) for authorization to complete migration.
What I wanted to know is exactly which bands they're testing, because I've used a nexus 5 D820 (which lacks band 3) and often it gets connected to the LTE and a friends phone says it is still connected to band 3 (Galaxy S4 i9505 using *#0011#)
So there's no way other than *#0011# for Samsung Phones to get that Connection Data? not from data gathered
and..
actually I'm from Dominican Republic

If you go in to the service menu by dialling in *#*#7378423#*#* then go to service info then configuration. All the working bands are listed there.

According to wikipedia you are probably using band 3 frequency 1800mhz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks#Americas
P.S. Damn your country has so many different bands lol.

You're not undersanding, i dont want static information, i want dynamic information.
I have a Xperia Z2 which has band 3, but i also have a nexus 5 D820 (americas version) which does NOT have band 3 and both get connected to LTE why? Because Band 3 is not Orange LTE final band, its a temporal one, and they are testing other bands, i want to know which band is....

Oh i see!
You want to know what spectrum u are.
Id guess band 2
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=4998&c=lg_d820_nexus_5_na_td-lte_16gb

And i forgot to mention that a friend has a Galaxy S4 i9505 (LTE) which lacks of band 2 and band 4, and using *#0011# says its using band 3
So, basically orange is using 2 LTE bands, one is obviously and oficially band 3, but the other one (probably band 4 but i want to make SURE) is on testing.

Hi OP. Did you find the right solution to find the frequemcy your which your smartphone connected to? Im looking for the same. All android apps i tried never show what freq band my phone are connected to. But i found 1 in apple ios app and you need to jailbreak. Its like a field test. Im hoping to find 1 that works with android because my apple is so outdated and non lte.
Thanks

This works indeed
But on stock based ROM you can't write into system folder due to RIL protection.
So either you create a cwm flashable zip to install this app in recovery, or you use a custom kernel with deactivated RIL.

Would the vibrant work in china?

I'm leaving for hong kong in a month and I plan to call tmobile to get an unlock code for my phone. I was wondering if our phones would worth there if I picked up a sim card? Would out work with their cell frequency?

I've an unlocked Vibrant and it works just fine here in Jordan, as it did with many countries' sim cards I used when traveling on this phone. So I suppose you wouldn't have a problem.
I'm going to china also. (have a US vibrant)
But what I'm concerned about is :
NOTE: I plan to live in Guangzhou , China.
1) The ability to make phone calls
2) data plans work there? If not, how can I check?
3) So wifi should work (Be universally compatible)?
4) Any other issues? or potential issues?

+1 this is correct you may need to go in and lock the band to whatever they are using over there. Also, it may be cheaper to buy a Hong Kong sim
(prepaid kind) not sure if they do that there but that is often much cheaper look on the net.....

What do you mean by checking what brands they use?
do you mean to check if china mobile service providers use Samsung galaxy s phones? But couldn't they be just using a different version of the phone with differing hardware specs ( as to mins compatible)?
Because, unless im mistaken, the vibrant is unique to America and the rest of the world uses the i9000 galaxy s ? In other words, even if thet use a Samsung smartphone in china, that doesn't guarantee my vibrant to be fully compatible there though right?
Thanks

It should work on everything (calls, texts, everything).
The only problem you might have is 3G. Unless the carrier you are using has the AWS bands (1700/2100), you won't get 3G. You also need BOTH bands to get 3G, not just one.
Although, I suppose if they use AT&T like bands, you would get 3G, as long as they have 1900 support.

Yeah i think 3g is only compatible in the north where they use 1900 band
I used a G1 in China and Honk Kong last summer with my T-mobile SIM. Cellular calls, text and GPRS data worked. I'm not sure if EDGE would work or not (probably have better luck with a local SIM) since I was trying not to use any cellular data at all. I'm pretty sure 3G would not work. I would imagine you would have a similar experience with the Vibrant since it uses the same frequencies as the G1.
So if i'm understanding everything correctly, there are TWO types of compatibilities for phones (mainly):
- Cell network for CALLING (ex: quad band )
- Data frequencies
So the vibrant is QUAD BAND right? so calls for sure will work.
For data:
Do you guys know what frequencies the providers use for data in china and whether the vibrant supports them? (what data bands the vibrant uses?)
Thanks!

Galaxy S2 HD LTE (SHV-e120s)

Hi guys
I recently got one of these shipped over to Australia. Now I've encountered a few network issues I'd like help to resolve.
1. I think the only HSDPA/UMTS bands available are only 900/2100MHz. That means I can't get access to Telstra's Next G Network as it runs on 850MHz. Unfortunately I can't get access to the service mode at all and I've also downloaded the network app from the android market to see if I can change the band that way, but that doesn't help either - the app just crashes. I guess there's not much I can do there.
2. According to all the sites I've seen about the specs for the phone - LTE bands supported are 800/1800/2600MHz. But I can't seem to get on Telstra's LTE in sydney. The phone assumes that even with a Telstra sim, I'm on roaming with SK Telecom and it states that 4G roaming is now available. The aforementioned network app is set to "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" - yet no LTE!
Perhaps I could flash to another ROM? but I'm not sure which would be applicable? The LG Nitro HD has the closest specs in my opinion. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. usually, bands are hardware limited. Meaning if you don't receive a particular band, you probably won't ever be able to.
2. what bands does Telstra's LTE operate on? #1 applies here too. If the LTE antenna in the phone doesn't receive the frequency your operator is transmitting on, there's not much you can do.
And in your "Perhaps", why would you even consider flashing a ROM for a completely different phone to yours???? (unless you WANTED to end up with a paperweight)
EDIT: Look at this thread. Specifically what's in post 2, which reads "So it doesn't matter where you buy the phone from, it will work on Telstra unless you go buy the korean version or something." Just googling your model number (SHV-E120S), it looks like that IS a Korean version of the phone. The fact that you say it says something about roaming for SK Telecom (a South Korean carrier) seems to support that.
EDIT 2: a quick google for the SHV-E120S turns up this page, which says the phone is for networks voice GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, data (HSPA+) UMTS900, UMTS2100, and LTE frequencies LTE 800, LTE 1800, LTE 2600.
According to Telstra's wikipedia page, HSPA on Telstra is UMTS850 and UMTS2100, and LTE is LTE1800. So you won't get full support on all of Telstra's bands with that model of phone.
It looks like you'll prob be stuck with 3G nextwork if you use this phone in AUS.
Remember: DO NOT try to flash ROMs that is not for your phone. I've tried this one time and ended up hard-bricking my phone. NEVER DO THIS!

Ive read a number of XDA sites where people flash and install new modems with different bands. Woudl it be possible to install a 850MHz modem into the above phone?

I unlocked more LTE bands on VS985

I unlocked some others LTE bands on VS985, I tried other tips from Sony Xperia forum with no success and now just with hiddenmenu it work, for that:
1. Download Shortcut Master (lite) from play store
2. Top right -> App Explorer ->Verizon Hidden Menu
3. go to -> LTEBandSelection tap and select Launch
4. Now choose all Bands and Save and reboot

This sounds cool in theory, but I'm skeptical. Not every VZW LTE tower uses every band. Different locations may even require specific bands. I'm not sure of the implementation details but our modems negotiate connections with towers, and this includes which band and channel within the band to use. If you enable all bands all the time, you're making your phone scan more frequencies, which takes more time and therefore increases battery usage.

No, not all bands, only 2 bands, BANDS 3/7 which it's the most used in europe
Do you get signals on these bands? Could just have software support because most of the software is shared between versions, but not have hardware support at all.

No for this app you need root. You should just root. Its very easy and will allow you to activate the other bands.
This thread/mod isn't getting much play it seems. Is there really any benefit from this in the US? Or will it drain battery looking for the other bands?
Works good
Thank you so much for sharing :good:

Very good question...!!
Here is a link to LTE bands by country/region if anyone needs/wants it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks
It's wikipedia though, so it may not be 100% accurate.
Ok but what bands does this actually unlocked vs those already in us for a specific region...
I ask this b/c in my limited theory, one could unlock said bands and theoretically use the phone on diff bands/carriers without having to go thru the hassle of 'begging' for a carrier unlock, correct? Essentially you could create your own carrier unlocked and/or international compatible G3... But I may be completely ass backwards wrong.... lol

I ask this b/c in my limited theory, one could unlock said bands and theoretically use the phone on diff bands/carriers without having to go thru the hassle of 'begging' for a carrier unlock, correct? Essentially you could create your own carrier unlocked and/or international compatible G3... But I may be completely ass backwards wrong.... lol

The vs985 is already carrier unlocked, but I get what you're asking. And I think that, yeah, if you know the bands in the country/region you're in you can unlock those bands to get 4g working there. Post #14 is a good example of that. I believe bands 3 and 7 are used for global lte, which would be why his/her carrier told him to use band 3 for lte in Pakistan.

Did anybody check for hidden LTE bands yet?

Run a test (no risk involved here, as this is just the test, not the permanent unlock) e.g. on a T-mobile H901:
Enter 277634#*# on your num pad, then select Field Test, Modem Settings, LTE Band Selection and then check what happens if you press BAND 20 (success or fail?). If it is success, then there could be the possibility to unlock band 20 on a H901.
See the same subject on the G4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/guide-enabling-lte-bands-t3137818
I'd bee keen to see if any of the released models supports B28 (one of the bands on 700mhz)
Doesn't the T-Mobile V10 already support band 20? It lists it in their specs.
What I'd be curious about is Band 17 for better AT&T compatibility on the H901. I will probably get mine tomorrow so I can test more.

Hey, can't find where to check LTE bands in that menu.
That menu does not exist on US variants (I can guarantee the T-Mobile variant, but probably goes for all of them, just like the G4). The T-Mobile variant in DFS will show up 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, and 20 as active bands. DFS can't write back to the phone for some reason, so you can't manually activate more bands, but with a SIM unlock and the other carrier's SIM it should auto-activate the other bands. In case someone wants a picture version:

I thought the hardware of the phone determined what bands are available. Is it really something that, if you could write back to the phone, could be turned on with the flip of a switch? Either way, that's still pretty interesting.

All the US variants share the same hardware. If we could write back, all bands the chipset supports would be active.

Very interesting. I think I'll take a look at this utility once I get my phone unlocked to see if any new ones open up.
Has anyone tried unlocking hidden bands on the H961n version?

I am also interested, since I bought one and I am stuck on 3G, because the band 4 is which the most carriers in Alberta- Canada utilize. Any updates on that? Is it possible to enable hidden bands on H961N variant?

Menu does exist on H901. Use this code..
*#546368#*901#
However, i get success when i select Band 20 but getting no signal.
ATT model user, try *#546368#*900# to see you can get into that menu.
Same for me. No signal after LTE20 selection.
Great find for the menu. Unfortunately H901 does not support Band 8 (800Mhz). The only one that is missing for me.

What do you need it for? It didn't do anything except show what was active on the phone, you can't write to it from my testing. I don't have a copy of it anymore, but any version of it should work equally.

Read the guides over in the G4 forums on how to activate new bands. Like I said, it wouldn't let me write a new band.

Are you a new or existing virgin mobile user. If existing did you get a new SIM from Virgin? As they need to issue a new one to you if you want to go 4G.

There was also something else I read (virgin user here to - currently non 4G) about having to wait until your next billing cycle until you can begin using 4G services. Annoying and I've seen lots of people complaining as they have to wait to their refresh date which could be anywhere up to a few weeks.
Probably stating the obvious but have you selected the LTE option under (preferred network type) mobile network settings?
Sent from my Redmi Note 4 using Tapatalk
Yep LTE set as preferred
Also I ordered the sim before my last billing date. The sim turned up about a week after the billing date.
Maybe the next billing date?

Possibly yeah, that's the only thing I can think off. Worth it to keep trying the odd reboot or switching in and out of aeroplane mode in case that helps it kick in.

Check what LTE bands Virgin uses and see if the Redmi Note 4 is compatible with said bands. I'm on T-Mobile and the Note 4 does not support it's LTE.

They use EE's, who use bands *3(1800) and 7(2600), so definitely compatible.

Have u checked to use another provider?
i have a similar issue, not all providers that have these bands listed use them in all locations, i am with Rogers in canada who does have band 7, which this phone has, but they only have it in certain areas, not the full coverage, so i sit on 3g a lot.
Check this site, i shows that your provider also has limited coverage on the available bands. willmyphonework.net
I have the same issue. I'm with Three and it keeps dropping to H+ far too regularly.
Had this sim for a while and worked perfectly well on my Jiayu S3.

It happens to me. What I found from google, it said Note 4 Hardware supports Band 4 and Band 7, but the miui 8 locks them.
Still looking for a way to open those bands.

Band 7 should be supported and usable but I doubt the hardware supports band 4.
You should have gotten the Redmi Note 3 instead, the Chinese version supports band 4, 7 and 40 out of the bands used in Canada, and the Special Edition ("international version") supports bands 2, 4, 7 and 40. The Chinese model also supports 3G on band 4 (1700/AWS).

FIDO does not support band 7 too, (even though some sites said Fido supports band 7)
My friend is using Bell, his phone shows 4G instead of 3G.
