[Q] Play Store auto-restore not working/Titanium Backup breaks push notifications - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yes, I searched. Both issues. Separately.
So I'm finally entering the world of custom ROMs on my Galaxy S III after putting up with rooted stock (UGH TouchWiz) for two years.
The main trouble comes with apps post-flashing. Even between versions of stock (several of which were custom), when I had to wipe the device completely unlike now, whenever I'd sign into the Play Store, the apps I'd previously had installed would be reinstalled. Then, Titanium Restoring was really just a "making sure" option. But on all the ROMs I've tried (three so far), after installing Gapps and signing in, this just doesn't happen. I'm not certain why because it's the same device and I've used TiB to change the Android ID back, even.
And this wouldn't be such a problem IF TiB didn't A) NOT have an option to only restore user apps and B) break push notifications for apps that use them.
What gives? I've Nandroid restored back to stock twice because of this.
P.S. feel free to move this into a device-specific subsection if necessary. These seemed like general issues but they may not be.

Hello? This is kinda throwing a wrench in me being able to use my phone. No matter what I do, how many times I sync EVERYTHING, when I flash the new ROM it only downloads a few apps. I'm pretty certain sync just isn't working on my stock ROM. What do I do?

[Q] Revolution 9 question

I've installed from the link on page 1 of Android Revolution HD 9.0.0 and very pleased so far. I did a full Superwipe as suggested and everything went well... except I had to set up all my apps again and move them back to the screens I want them.
I've seen some people mention auto-download of their apps from Play after they flash new ROMs but that doesn't seem to occur for me. I'd like to be able to have my apps install fresh from Play but also would like them to return to the screens I have them on rather than having to set it all up again.
With a new clean ROM I'm wondering how likely I am to bring back possible issues if I restore TB data and system? Can I just restore 'All Apps with Data' and not bring problems to the new system? Do I need to restore 'Missing Apps + All System Data' to have things come back to their original places?
TIA for any assistance. (*grins* Missus is getting a bit cheesed at how much time I am spending reflashing my phone instead of doing the work she has for me... )
If you want to flash different ROMs to your phone you have to get used to losing all of your data (apps etc.) unless you are going from whateverrom 1.0 to 2.0, generally they are non wipe unless indicated.
If going from a Sammy touchwiz ROM to cm10 or another aosp ROM then you will have to wipe.
When restoring from TB restoring apps with data is fine, just not system apps, that can cause problems.

Hey thanks for the Reply - I kinda figured that is how it was, but wasn't sure if I would be better re-install the apps rather than Restore them. I'm still puzzled about comments from a couple of threads about having their aps auto-download when they've flashed though. Guess I'll need to look further into the Play Store options.
So... here is an issue. On my new 'Superwiped' Revolution, I was out and about and I had no Internet access. Phone worked and I wasn't in a Wifi area but I had no H+ or 3G in the Notification bar.
Looking at the ARHD setup stuff I can't see what the problem is - my phone worked fine and Mobile Data was on. I figured APN settings but adding Telstra didn't change access issues.
I used CWM to revert back to a previous Clean JB DLI5 image from 2 days back and all was fine.
What did I miss/fail to do in the ARHD flash process? Is it a Kernel issue? A Modem flash? (still a bit confused about what flash does what in the phone...)
Any ideas as to the Web access issue? I am puzzled as to why in ARHD9 I can't access web via NextG but can as soon as I reverted to the previous JB image - it is also DLI5. I was hoping to continue with ARHD as the new DLI7 should be available soon, but if I can't work out why it won't do internet on the phone connection I will need to find another ROM to use...
I had a thought that maybe I needed to flash a modem but then, I don't think I'd be getting phone/text at all and wifi would be an issue. I'm going to try the ARHD9 without the tweaks and see what happens, although I might wait for Mike's DLI7 release to do that. In the meantime I'm going to try the leak and see what it is like.

[Q] Force closing process and apps

I've been getting systematic breakdown of my device whereby processes and apps will suddenly for no reason on their own be forced to stopped unexpectedly. So for example Google Framework, gapps, acore, play store then apps will be unable to start and force close immediately e.g. swype, titanium backup etc etc. Now this has happened on many different ROMs e.g. DSC, Longhorn, PCM7, Mokee and now even on the AOPK CM9. So it isn't down to a particular ROM as they always flash fine and my device runs fine otherwise.
A complete data wipe and re-flashing of a ROM always restores the phone to "normal" but I fear my device is dying. Has this happened to anyone else?
try installing different launcher...
Really? Why should that make a difference? They mostly have different launchers though.
It doesn't.
Does it do this without any of your apps added?

Well it's very hard to say that because it generally progresses in how bad it gets. I've had ROMs working fine for a week or so before they give up the ghost. I'd be inclined to say it maybe a dodgy app but I've had a huge range of different apps because my knowledge and ability with Android has come on since I first started with custom ROMs.
Bump.
After reboots, I lose data of all my apps so they're like they've just been installed, e.g. Whatsapp asking to verify my number etc. Also after a reboot none of my installed apps are in the launcher but in the settings they are listed under their process name (e.g. com.adobe.flashplayer) with a grey SD icon next to them. Multiple reboots and wiping of Dalvik haven't fixed this. So I really don't want to wipe data but looks like I will have to.
Furthermore, an app can be "restored" simply by re-installing it, the device says that I am replacing an already installed application.
This is a huge problem because the pins in the device's port are bent so I have to charge batteries externally.
I'd spend a little bit of time and attempt to straighten out those pins, as it will help. However, while I do believe wiping data at the very least is in order, I'd be more inclined to go with the full factory reset and start over.
Yeah always happen to me too..
Can you try to check via Recovery Mode and see if Cache partition is OK?
Because I always get that error if Cache partition (innersd5) crashed..
and to fix that I must disassemble DS and takeout the internal SD card and mount it to PC..
Then you can format the Cache partition to ext3 (the partition is small size around 230MB)
Hope this help you

[Q] Restoring droid to stock

I couldn't leave well enough alone. I am in Europe, using a Verizon Motorola Droid, which was working (although at each boot would say 'unknown SIM - press ok, then it worked). I rooted the phone, installed Titanium, backed everything up and then started playing. I froze a load of bloatware - everything fine. I then downloaded Greenify and hibernated apps I didn't use. It was great. I should have stopped. I didn't. I downloaded Xposed framework, and then the Gravitybox module. Whoops. My phone took on a life of its own. First, my 'phone' (dialler) and 'people' (contacts) icons said 'app isn't installed' when they were clicked. I restored my Titanium backup. No change. I unfroze all the Titantium apps. No changed. I then rebooted, and the phone and contacts icons completely disappeared, as well as my wallpapers and ringtone, to something that my phone couldn't identify. I uninstalled Gravitybox and rebooted. Now the phone no longer connects to the cell phone signal either. I'm sunk, and really need some idea of what to do. Please.......Is there any way of just getting this phone back to some kind of workable order?
Try re-flashing the gapps for your android version. I think Android 4.2.2. And always remember: Make backups. Systembackups with Safestrap for example.

Thanks. I'm on 4.1.2. I have been trying to find instructions and/or a link regarding just reflashing the whole phone to the stock version, but can't find any. Would you know of one? I am a total noob (as evidenced by my thread) - so I am wondering - if I downloaded one of the other systems, like Liquid Smooth or whatever, does that also flash the phone where all the system files are new, or does it build upon the kernel which I appear to have screwed up??
Google should find a flashable Gapps.zip file. If nothing works, look into the firmwares super thread for stock roms or install cyanogenmod.
My mystery is somewhat solved - the upshot being don't leave a rooted phone around a young fella who is just starting to play with computers, as my son has been 'uninstalling' various files on my phone - the effect of which, of course, didn't come into effect until I rebooted, having downloaded Gravity Box. I have been able to find and restore 'People' and 'Phone' through my Titanium back-up. However, my phone is still not seeing my sim - another file that has been uninstalled, I imagine. I would hope that perhaps someone knows the name of the file that allows the phone to see the sim, rather than me having to uninstall all the files. My son says he only uninstalled about 5 files, but does not remember the names. Not a developer in the making!
I also have the problem with the recovery menu, where I cannot boot into it. Would an uninstalled file cause this? I downloaded Clockworkmod recovery, only to be then told that it does not support the Motorola Razr 'Spyder'. Are there any other options? And is the XT912 considered the 'Razr Spyder or is it one of the Droid options?? Thanks for any help you can give.

[Q] Jellbean 4.3 App Deleted

I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999L with Android 4.3, then downloaded Titanium Back-up, and then started removing several apps (in an attempt to strip the bloatware). Now when I go to Google Play and try to install a new app, I click the "Install" button and wait for the progress meter to reach 100%, but no "Open" button appears afterward (which used to happen). When I search my phone, there are no icons for any of the new apps I try installing.
Does anyone know which app I deleted that caused this problem? Thank you.
Put back you're nandroid backup. (I assume you make one before you start deleting some apps.)
Or flash a stock rom back without whipping. So you dont lose some data.
Send From A Devil3 - f2fs - Dualboot Jb4.3/cm11 Powered Machine
Have you tried rebooting the phone?
if you have installed TB then you have rooted the phone obviously. Explore your data folder from the root directory using TB or any advanced file explorers like Root explorer or Es file explorer. Find the apk files of the apps you have installed just to verify if your play store has downloaded the apps to your phone.
Also are you sure if you removed only bloatware or any core apks related to your android system... like eg: application provider.apk
I did not make a backup. Before flashing a ROM, I wanted to post here and see if anyone knows what app being deleted caused the behavior I described. That's what I'm wondering: Do you know which specific app being deleted would cause Google Play to have the described problem? When I try to install a new app, it gets to "100%" on the status bar, but subsequently fails to display the "Open" button. Everything else on the phone works flawlessly and I put a lot of time into customizing the phone with apps I like.
Having said that, I am curious about the option to flash a ROM that you mentioned. The reason I did not want an Apple phone is because they seemed to restrictive of options and freedom. But lately I am thinking about Google censoring AdBlock from Google Play, the EFF's criticism of doing away with AppOpps, and shoving Google+ down the throats of YouTube users. So, I looked into Cyanogen but my model of phone was not listed on Cyanogen's website for phones tested to work. I am interested to exploring the idea of flashing a ROM (which I never did before) but I definitely want to keep my 4G LTE functioning via T-Mobile. Any ideas?

retrigger application restore

Did a deep clean install of the latest cm12s for my One plus one after I had some dirty install bugs. Had done a backup with titanium to an otg drive, but when I went to restore them it always stops at some random %. The backups seem to be currupted. I therefore want to use the play store to restore all my apps. When first starting the phone and setting it up after the clean install there is an option to restore apps and settings from a specific date (in my case 3 days ago). Is there a way to retrigger this option? Or do I have to wipe the phone again and run the setup again?
Edit... When I look in my play store account in the browser under my apps my one plus backup is showing the latest state after the reinstall (with 8 apps compared to the 100+ I had installed before). I guess google doesn't keep several updates for the same device? Meaning I'm screwed and have to install them one by one.....
Edit 2... Wiped it and ran the installer again. The latest backup from today (8 apps) came up as the default choice, but the one from 3 days ago (264 apps) was also available. Hallelujah! (good job google) Though I'd still like to know if it is possible to trigger the update without wiping the phone....
