hi,
I started this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/help/upgrading-55-to-314-t2860394
but ran into an issue. Since I didn't get any updates on that thread, I thought I would make a post dedicated to the problem I'm running into.
basically while attempting to upgrade to .314 using PC Companion I get
The phone tablet contains modified software that cannot be updated
Sony Updated Engine failure (error 2003)
Click to collapse
with some research it appears that this is because i unlocked my bootloader.
Questions:
is my conclusion correct? or is this because of something else?
if correct, what is the recommended course of action here? relock bootloader and update using companion PC or decrypt FTF files and flash using flashtool?
If i relock bootloader using flashtool, will it wipe my phone data?
I've found the firmware files on my computer (C:\ProgramData\Sony Mobile\Update Engine\db\13740270\blob_fs) If i decrypt these with flashtool and use them to update firmware, will it wipe my data?
Thanks
You can update via flashtool without looking data. Flash ftf file and check system only and uncheck wipe. Re- locking bootloader will wipe your phone. Your assumption is correct m8. You can't update your phone with pc companion because of your unlocked bootloader. Happy flashing m8

Hey! thanks for the help on this subject.
I wonder where I can find official tft for sony z2 (314). I'm in exact same position as [w]. Want to upgrade the software (stock) but I already unlockd bootloader and flashed stock kernel with recovery. Sony software says that can update the phone, but I don't want to download som strange tft. Want the oficial tft image or some goo source.
Thanks again
hope you have a nice day

there is a help forum at the top of qna, try advertising that to people as there are links to many useful things there such as that thread with all the ftfs
that frf thread is also found at the top of the general section

I'm also kinda paranoid so I just created my own FTF from official Sony update via Sony PC Companion using these instructions.
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...eria/This-is-how-to-create-an-FTF/td-p/228703
Its takes a while but felt more comfortable than just some random dl.
here is the .314 i created.

So i'm a little paranoid, can you explain like i'm 5?
attached is a screenshot of the flashtool interface
What do i want to check and what do i want to leve unchecked?
do you mean that all the check boxes under WIPE should be empty
and the only checkbox under EXCLUDE that should be checked is SYSTEM?
thanks
@[w] Hey m8, Here's a step by step guide with videos from xperiafirmware hope it helps. BTW did you re-lock your bootloader?

sweet. upgraded and rooted using "Easy Root Tool" (was super easy!) :good:
for others discovering this post i've attached a screenshot of what my flashmode tool looked like:
basically under WIPE make sure DATA is unchecked. you will notice that userdata.sin disappears from content list
under exclude make sure nothing is checked.
win.
@[w] Hey m8, glad to see everything went ok Now you are all set to go and mod to your heart's content:highfive: Thanks for posting the screen shot and explanation as a reference for noobs/Sh*tsung refugees to see how the Flashtool screen should look during upgrading. Once again thanks for that:victory:

I have a rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader, by following instructions on this thread.
Today I received a notification about OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 (40MB in size) and I was wondering if I can apply this update without loosing root. I really did search for an answer on the forum before making this post and couldn't find anything specific for my phone, but what I did found only confused me more, which is to be expected since I am a noob. Apparently it worked for some users of Xperia Play with unlocked bootloader, but on the other hand some users of Xperia Arc S say that bootloader should be locked when making an OTA update.
I would really appreciate any help from more experienced members, I'm new in Android and don't want to start by bricking my phone.
Thank you for your time and effort.
Boom
better dont, you will end up with a bricked device. NEVER accept OTA updates if your bootloader is unlocked.
Don't update with PCC when you're unlocked.
Wow, that was fast! Thank you guys.
hi, did you find how to update?

i also have an open bootloader although not root, but i tried updating using the phone's OTA and PCC and neither worked. I promptly realized it might just be the open bootloader which is keeping me from updating, so how do we manually update? if you have any procedures will highly appreciate anyone..... thanks in advance

You can find your regions FW. (firmware) and download it, after that download and install flashtool, and flash the .ftf file via flashtool and that is it.

Im going to engage in a rather noobish conversation but i want to be completely sure before i proceed to install. my phone and my pc companion both find the update which is 6.1.a.2.45, which i assume is the one i need to find on .ftf. after downloading it from wherever i find it i just open the flash tool program and select it to start the installation? and again thank you

i did a fast search and found this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31011440#post31011440
they have some firmwares there, but they seem to be full updates, because they are 300+mb while the update on my phone its only 40mb.
so should i just download the generic and proceed to flash?

Hmmm,
Slightly different scenario here.
I have a rooted xperia S with a locked bootloader and obviously want to preserve root.
Previous experience tells me that a PC update from SEUS does a full wipe of the phone and looses root however OTA updates usually preserve root. I was hoping somebody could clarify if this is still the case?
Thanks
if your bootloaders unlocked you cant update ota or via seus. it will just give an error about your device being modified

there is a rom somewhere in another forum i guess which already is updated and rooted. so you might want to just download that one and flash it. it has its own kernel and recovery.

I've not been on much recently at all so I could be wrong, but I'm sure it's been said that you can flash ROM such as the linked one when bootloader is locked and perhaps the pre-rooted one too. May need to search the thread.
Nothing out there that allows me to root my Xperia S on ICS without wiping my data though I think. One can wait... or dream. :[

Yeah having too wipe at this point is a bummer. If I'm going to wipe my phone ill wait for the ability to unlock my locked bootloader.
Problem with that is I will most likely have a new phone by then.

Hi All,
Ive just got one of these to play with for a holiday phone and thought first thing is first before i even throw a sim in it lets get it up to ICS.
Ive gone into update centre and it says there are no updates?
Can anyone advise please how to update or why it has seen 4.00?
Thanks

Have you tried with Sony PC suite?
Anyway, you can always flash a ROM which is already carrying 4.0.4.
I havent tried this yet, im still at work. i bought this phone to play with rooting and flashing etc as i didnt want to brick my HOX (im a n00b)
I will download drivers etc tonight.
Thanks

Easiest way, download flashtool and stock ICS ftf file.
Flash the stock ICS ftf file using Flash tool.

As you're still on 2.3.7, I'd suggest you follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1897826
Should be easy.
I made the mistake of upgrading to 4.0.4 (6.1.1.C.1.0) which didn't allow me to use the above. I had to downgrade to B.1.0, root, reupgrade the kernel to C.1.0 and only then flashing a ROM (I truly like Xperiance Lite 2.0, it doubled my battery time!).

No ,it doesn't remove it AFAIK.
Damn guys I still don't understand something.
1) If I'll unlock bootloader for example to flash customs. I can't use any more Sony PC Companion for firmware update ? Correct.
2) And if I want to get back to Sony PC Companion (example to get latest available update) I need to flash back any stock FTF and after just a lock bootloader back ?
Or what I need just to run Sony Update Service to restore back stock firmware and after lock bootloader ?
please explain in detail's because I read all threads but still confused.

This is the info as i understand it. (yes its confusing!)
- unlocking your bootload will delete your device keys. So x-reality engine will stop working. It will also stop your updates from the sony server (as your device has lost its keys and wont be recognised as an xperia device)
-If you want to enable these sony updates you will need to flash your TA partition back. This will only work if you have a stock FTF firmware package. A custom ROM wont enable your device keys to work.

Hi guys,
Just realized there is a new update. I am on rooted .290 model C6802,
Here are my few questions:
1. Do i need to update it from Sony Pc Companion ? As on rooted fw there is no notification for any updates.
2. Do i get to keep root ?
3. Will I still have an unlocked bootloader?
4. Will I still have a stock kernel ?
5. How do i update it to a clean stock rom will every thing 'untouched' ? Wanna check a few things and then root later.
6. Any improvement in this fw ?
7. how do i keep track of fw update as my ultra doesnt deliver me any notification ?
1. You have to update it through PC Companion or SUS..
2. No doubt your root will be lost..
3. To keep the root you've to first update then unlock the Bootloader of your device..which will void your warranty unless you take a TA backup and then unlock..
4. To root on your lock Bootloader you've to wait for a while..
Revert back if you need anymore info..
Hit Thanks if I helped you..

1. I've not see anyone with an ota update, I think they have all been PCC or flashing a FTF
2. The FTF kills root, not sure about PCC. Root is easy to get back with a unlocked bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630781
3. Wont touch the BL state
4. Yes
5. Um... just flash the FTF or via PCC - make a nandroid backup beforehand of cause
6. There is a thread about this in grneral
7. Plug in the ultra to a PC, some of the updates have come as OTA, but will normally fail on a rooted device
Thank you for the reply
The update doesnt work from the pc companion on rooted devices.

That leaves two causes, unroot and flash via PCC or flash the FTF from flashtool. Plenty of ways to get root back if you have an unlocked bootloader now
FTFs are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2453921

Lol! But C6833 is an LTE variant. I think it will drain battery. I guess c6802 should work better on its dedicated stock fw.
Anyways u knw better.
btw to unroot you need a locked bootloader. To avoid bootloops a stock kernel is required rt ? I am on fw. 290 but cant find the stock kernel anywhere.
Hello everyone. Seriously need help here with a xperia z ultra c6883. I bought it off someone and tried to do an update from the phone but it keeps saying 14.3.A.0.757 could not verify. FYI, I checked to see if bootloader is locked and it says yes. I downloaded rootchecker and it says device not rooted. I dont know where to turn. i just want to be at stock.
android version says- 4.4.2
baseband version says -8974-AAAAANAZQ-10270045-39
kernel version says - 3.4.0-perf-g8c33725
[email protected] #1
build number says_ 14.3.A.0.681
What does this all mean? Am I rooted? Do I have an unlocked bootloader? Can I just go back to stock? Or is it easier to just upgrade to lollipop?
Try locking the boot loader and then connect to Sony PCC and redo the phone.

you can use flashtool (http://flashtool.net) to relock the bootloader, but if you download flashtool you may as well just use that to update the ZU to the latest FTF from here (see the FTF thread in the dev section)
Is there a how to video on the process? Ive read things like ( I need to know what rom im using or drm keys etc etc) Dont know what to do.

In the FTF thread there is a video
As you brought the ZU already bootloader unlocked the DRM keys are gone (unless the last owner still has the backup). Just flashing a FTF doesn't relock the bootloader, you have to use the BLU icon in flashtool. The BL does't have to be locked to flash a FTF but it does to get/use the updates directly from Sony.
Any more Q's just ask
Ok thank you for the info. If you dont mind I might hit you up tommorrow for more Q's.
