Flashing a rom

I've searched all over the forum, but I just wanted to make sure before doing this. I have rooted my Samsung S2 with Odin. I now downloaded a custom rom, specifically HyperDroid-Androidmeda.
It's in a zip file, and it was to my understanding that I flash it the same way in Odin by clicking PDA. However, it's a zip file, and not tar, so I can't bring it in.. Do I just rename zip to .tar and flash it how I rooted it? Thanks guys!

Read this, this and this so you know what you are getting yourself into.
Also read the Hyperdroid thread, it has a how-to flash it and more info on the rom.

Yeah, I have gone through it all.
Installation Guide: (via CWM Recovery)
1. Install Base (*****install any updates posted HERE for Delta Updates)
It doesn't say how though.. it just says install it. I came from the HTC Hero, so I assume you throw the zip on your sd card, but mine doesn't have an SD card, so I am not sure how to open the internal storage of the phone and install from there in clockworkmod
edit: enabled usb debugging, the mounted data and usb storage. all good, thanks for the help anyway
To flash
1) Flash a kernel with CWM recovery (Cf-root is most popular as a basic rooting/CWM kernel) (Recovery is built into the kernel in samsung phones)
2) Copy the zip file into your internal SD card
3) reboot into recovery (Home > vol up > power when phone turned off)
4) chose flash zip from sd card
5) chose internal sd card
6) select zip
7) flash
8) wipe data/cache/dalvik cache when moving from custom rom/custom rom

Yeah I did all of that, but suffer from a boot loop when the hyperdroid logo is first shown and the voice says 'wecome'. Pretty sure I didn't miss any major steps. Got any ideas?

First boot takes ages, upto 10mins, did you flash the newest HyperDroidV5.2.21 base? Was the zip about 359MB?

I flashed Hyperdroid_Androidmeda_v5.2.21_signed.zip yeah.. not stable? The boot loop is surely not supposed to happen. Thanks for the support btw!
edit: oh i didn't understand that was it booting up! I am so used to getting boot loops from my HTC Hero that I thought it was an error! Thanks

That zip should be fine, and the bootloop shouldn't happen, after flashing the zip and wiping cache/data/dalvik it should take upto 10mins to boot the first time as it has to rebuild the cache, it will look like its bootlooped but its just slow!

does the phone have to be in USB Debugging mode, if so im stuck
Do not worry of USB Debugging mode.
Follow this steps just use kernel from attachments.
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select siyah.tar
- Put your phone in download mode(vol down+power+menu button)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
Ive used Odin to reflash my phone with Siyah 6.04.tar kernel. According to Odin everything was ok but when phone rebooted i got the Samsung Galaxy SII screen this time with the yellow triangle and then the phone goes blank, ie turns off and nothing else
In recovery mode clean cache, dalvik cache and fix permision, if this dont help install new rom.

It is up to you. My is in my signature(I'm satisfied with it).
Maybe try Flash Stock rom ? And then Flash XXLSJ ?
Basically you stuck in a boot loop ...reason behind it is bad boot img., according to me. You can try restoring only system (in advance restore) or the entire nandroid itself, This is only if you have a backup done before.

Install Odin on your PC, get the samsung drivers by installing Kies.
Hold down volume down key, middle of d-pad and power buttons all together while phone is off.
Put a different Rom .zip on your sd card using a PC.
Use Odin to flash clockworkmod to the phone, when fiinshed the phone will boot into cwm.
Use cwm to install the zip you put on the sd.
Reboot into the stable ROM.

I use Odin Multi Downloader v4.34
The data partition not formating would be a cause for concern, if I was you I would try formating it with ClockWorkMod by doing a data wipe/factory reset.
If it was me I would use my computer to put CyanogenMod 7.2 .zip file on the SD (its stable and handy for getting things working)
Most stock ROMS won't flash through CWM.
So to summerise I would try this:
Go into download mode.
Link up with Odin and select your OPS file (make sure GTI5500 OR 5503 appears at top and not the word Android)
Select "One Package" in Odin options
Download a .zip of Clockworkmod for galaxy 5
select it as the One Package and don't touch the other boxes...
let clockworkmod flash into the phone and let it boot into it
now try the data wipe in clockworkmod
install the cyanogenmod zip from the sd and reboot
good luck
I've attached my Clockworkmod Zip file. I use it at least once a week so its good

Yep! There is no key combo for recovery on Galaxy5, if I need to boot recovery and cannot load the rom I just put it in download mode and use odin to reflash clockworkmod, then when its finished it auto boots into cwm and I do whatever I need to

Trouble caused from CM11 installation failure

Dear everyone,
I tried to install CM11 in CWM recovery page yesterday, but the installation was failed.
I didn't backup accidentally, then I couldn't restore my current ROM.
Now each time I power on the device, the CWM recovery page automatically shows up and I cannot get into android.
even if I hold the power button, it will only show the CWM recovery page to me and it cannot be turned off.
I tried to reinstall the stock OS by using Odin, but I seems my computer cannot detect my phone.
I did try also on my friends' computer, but It doesn't work out.
Is there still any way I can revive my phone?
It will be the most grateful if anyone can save my phone.

The Stock Android package has got one MD5 file and one dll file inside.
Is it alright to install it on the recovery page?
Just take the zip file of the rom to the sd card ( cm11 i suppose ?? ) and then flash it via the recovery, also don't forget to flash the gapps

The stock rom it's only flashable by odin dude. For flash a rom in recovery it have to be in zip form.
To be more precise :
1. Download the rom you want, cm11 for example (zip file) and the gapps
2. Move it to your external or internal sd card of your phone
3. Go to the recovery and wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache
4. Then install zip from sd card and select the file of the rom you've downloaded before
5. Reboot
Then all should went fine for you :good:
PS : If you go to a bootloop simply remake all this steps

If you don't have a nandroid backup, then you will need to reflash the stock firmware via Odin and start over.
I didn't make a nandroid backup but it doesn't bother me much about losing data. I tried using Odin but I can't seem to understand how to use it.

There are a zillion guides around here, YouTube, etc on how it works. It's basically the same for almost any Samsung.
Download the appropriate firmware for your phone / carrier / region
Install drivers, if needed
Open Odin as Admin
Plug phone in Download Mode to PC
Odin should register phone as COM:XX where XX could be any numbers
Load the firmware in the PDA or AP slot, depending on which Odin version being used
After file is checked, hit Start
Wait patiently
Phone should reboot on it's own
If phone bootloops after successful flash, then reboot to the stock recovery and perform a factory data reset
