Writing on the ultra: using soft pencil - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hey guys, first post, after all of the research, I thought you guys knew the most about my new purchase of an old ass phone.
I heard about all the scratching issues when using a pencil/pen. I decided to go get an 8B pencil (soft) instead of the normal #2 (2H), and it seems to work ok without scratching so far (Mind you I made sure the tip was nice and rounded). I hate those thick tip styluses.
Are there any graphite experts in here? haha. Totally wondering if I'm going to end up scratching her.

Put a screen protector over the ASF it will save heartache, and a pencil will still work. I normally use a 2B

I don't know how I feel about putting another protector over one that already has some rainbowing issues when I inspect it. And I'm not about to try and remove that monster of a screen antishatter layer, it seems like its more glue than plastic haha. I sincerely appreciate your reply!

Well i put a screen protector over mine. Doesn't affect the screen in the least!

Me too. The ifolix fits very well. Totally invisible.
And does not impact pencil

I find propelling pencil leads are too thin to be reliable.
So 2B or not 2B, if that's the question I'd say either if the points are rounded.

definitely should have screen protector, anti-scratch, shatterproof, plus the ability to easily wipe off fingerprints (with no protection, I have to use diluted alcohol to get my shiny screen back) yes, there's some faint rainbow thing when you squint your eyes really hard and tilt the screen to the extreme side but that's it.

I use an HB with no screen protector, have for the last year. Just make sure you round the tip and then you have nothing to worry about

[Q] Not using a case? How is the phone holding up?

I generally don't like using cases on my phones but since I paid so much for my Xperia S I have been using one. I was curious how people who don't use cases on it have had their phone look like. How has the Xperia S survived the day to day normal wear and usage?
i dont have a case, cause i dont want to cover my beautiful XS..hehe..but i have a pouch for my XS.

I didn't use a case at first but a porch, and I hit a table with the lower left edge of my s (really soft, I didn't even drop it, I just put it down quickly) and it cracked and the paint peeled of. I drew over it with nail polish but I have been using a hard case ever since PLUS a porch.
And I still get a lot of scratches on the housing where the cut outs of my case are (mostly around the USB and headphone plugs, even though I treat my phone really carefully)
I wouldn't recommend using the phone without a case, it scratches way too easy.

Man this phone body is like a tin can
Me myself didn't like a case as well
I usually put my phone in the side pocket alongside with headset and it scratched. Hopefully i have it black so the scratch is not really visible.
And do not ever put your phone in the same pocket with your car keys. In my own experience it can dent your phone pretty bad

Nail polish all the way... In a year my complete phone will be painted in nail polish

I got a white Sony Xperia S a couple of days after the release. Never used any cases, I really hate 'em unless they add functionality.
I dropped my Xperia S only once on tiles, but it wasn't a very high drop. You can only see the scuffs if you look for them. They're really tiny.
Also, the only other scratch I have on my Xperia S is just my fault. I tried putting it in a tin case-like thing I had on a tripod which I had made for a smaller phone, but what I didn't realise was that the edges were very sharp.
My conclusion: Unless you like dropping your phone on the floor or scratch it on purpose with very sharp items, the Xperia S probably won't have any scratches at all. Even in white. The screen too is fine and the Sony (Ericsson) logo on the back isn't scratched either.
I've had mine for 5 months. It once dropped from a very low height facing down, so the screen kinda had a "scatter" from the side (volume up height) and the line goes until the very top of the USB port. It is only seeable at certain angles. There are also tiny scratches, but they are on the screen protector, so.... It once dropped from a slightly higher height than the first, but nothing happened.
"What really matters in this world, anyway?"
I am not surprised that the white one has scratch problems. My buddy had a white HTC Hero with teflon coating and it looked pretty bad after a year or so.
My Xperia s has a thin case so the outside is mint. The screen has really minute scratches that all screens get that you can only see in certain light but no biggy. I never rock a screen protector. I would like to go case free but seeing peoples comments it makes me a bit nervous.

Mine is a white one. I don't have a single scratch (none that I can see, at least). And my screen "scratches" are like yours, but they are on the shatter proof that come already applied to the device.

The Xperia S already has a screen protector on it from the factory. Going case free isn't a problem for me at all
I wouldn't remove this protector though. I read somewhere that it could make capacitive button sensitivity less.
I use some cheap pocket-like condom to keep my sola semi-safe.
Back in 2010 when I just bought a brand new HTC Desire I immediately wanted to protect it. I mean PROTECT IT.
I bought the Krusell Orbiflex thingie (was like uberexpensive) and was pretty happy with it until... after few months I realized that the screen was actually scratched by the case itself!
Then I sent over the HTC to the service point (because of broken camera or something). I repeated the procedure 5 times, so they swapped the unit into a new one.
I was happy and stuff and put the new, shiny device into the same case .
After few weeks my brand new HTC was scratched again in the very same spot beacuse of the case. AGAIN.
Maybe a little bit OT but kind of funny story it was .

No removing it makes it more sensitive. Trust me I have done it on 3 different Xperia S phones.

People don't stay with their phones for much longer anyway, so i don't think it's a good thing use cases...
My only scratch is off all places on the glass in the centre of he screen on my s3 after taking it into a repair shop without my case on. Was just glad to have my phone back so let the guy off with the scratch... normally use a otterbox defender case.

Hey FilthyGoat I take my case off, remove battery and lightly air blow, wipe the edges there is always a little layer of dust there.
I do that ever couple weeks so it does not accumulate. I also use a LCD screen cleaner, no house hold cleaners on the screen.

Indeed, thing is, filthy goats have a very hard time keeping anything clean
I go try hard some times and completely give the phone a wipe down but the screen becomes smudged very quick ... Maybe cuz I'm filthy? Who knows
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
mine too, smudges happen very quick, doesen't take much in terms of greasy fingers. I have a couple eyeglass cloths around my desk at work and I give it a spray with the eyeglass solution and just wipe it down. Also, I change the screen protector every few months, and go through a few tpu cases a year. Mine still looks as new as the day I bought it.
the kinda of case and screen protector i'm using don't really leave smudges... the most ill have to worry about is dust gathering around the corners of the screen where the protector is.. but i just blow it off dust and wipe it whenever it looks dirty
Is eye glass cleaner harmful to the glass display?

Has anybody noticed that dust collects on the inside of the little window for the front-facing camera? Or, am I the only one this has happened to? I have no idea how to clean it; I've tried shooting "canned air" into the back with the cover off, and into the earpiece. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd gladly listen. Thanks!

i go naked!
I originally had a ballistic case for my phone but hate how bulky it was, and the phone is a heavy beast as it is. I really don't like screen protectors either, they either smudge too much, or distort the clarity of the screen. So I'm going totally naked now which can be a delicate operation, so I take the following steps to keep my phone clean.
1. Don't drop it. Duh. Most of the time dropping a phone without a case isn't the end of the world though, and I could live with a ding in the corner should it happen, better than living in fear and having a frumpy-ass case wrapped around it the other 99.9% of the time that I don't have poor coordination...
2. Never set the phone down on a hard surface unless very gently, this prevents scratching. If I do set my phone down I put my wallet under it, but most of the time my phone is either in my hand or in my front pocket.
3. Dedicate one pocket to you phone (you can carry your wallet there too it it's soft), and NOT your back pocket. I'm a lightweight guy and I shattered the screen on my Atrix by sitting on it when getting into my car, turned out it wasn't as strong as my iPhone's 3GS screen was, so I don't do this anymore. Sounds stupid but I've knowingly sat on my phone thousands of times without it ever breaking... I just really like my phone in my back pocket. So now I keep my phone in my front right pocket with the screen facing my leg; keys and spare change go in left pocket.
4. Carry a microfiber pouch on you--I use this to clean the screen and to clean my sunglasses, and I store my sunglasses in it when stowing them away. Most cheap-o sunglasses stores around here will sell you one for 2 or 3 dollars, the nice ones feel like micro-suede...
5. Keep your hands & ears clean, I won't detail how to clean you ears and trim your nails but you get the idea
Dead skin and pocket debris are the main things to get stuck in the speaker grills so if you're super anal you could keep your phone in a soft case with a drawstring before putting it in your pocket but that's kinda dorky, at the end of the day it's just a phone and you're probably gonna replace it with a better one in due time anyways so I say go naked and enjoy...

[Q] Setting Button inoperable

My settings button no longer works, no matter where I am in my phone or what app I'm using. I'm not rooted, yet.
I did search and couldn't much on this issue, it might be human error, but am looking for some input.
I ordered a new screen protector, recommended from another member, and directions say to use "soapy" water to install it. I ordered two of these for dirt cheap (I know I know, you get what you pay for), and tried the 1st one with no water. Looked like crap. #2 I used very minimal water, maybe 5 drops, with a towel near the edges of the screen to absorb excess as i squeegeed it out, keeping it away from the what I thought were sensitive areas like the speaker. Honestly, not much water was used, even so that not much got absorbed when I squeegeed. My phone has been exposed to more rain water than this lol.
I tried restarting it, again, and same condition remains.
Phone is currently off in some rice, in the event it is water damage. Hopefully these phones aren't that sad that a few drops of water will damage them.
Could this be unrelated to the water? Would the water have found it's way through the sides, between the front screen and the side walls?
Thanks for any input guys.

I also use wet-mount screen protectors. Zaggs and armor shields. Both are good, zagg is a little better but I think armor shield is a better value (usually significantly cheaper). I've pretty much soaked a bunch of devices when installing them and never had a hardware issue from it. Probably 6 phones and 4 tablets between me and my wife.

I'll look into the Zagg if they're better. I went for value on the last one, and even though I had what appears to be a coincidence with the button, the finished product of that brand wasn't very good. Hard to clean the soapy residue off even with my selection of cleaners.

+1, first Zagg HD I've had is on my LGOG right now. From what I've read, all the wet mount screen protectors use a mild soap solution as the wetting agent. I've interchanged Zagg and armor shield solutions and screen protectors with no issues. The longest I've waited after an install to power on was about an hour, and now have no qualms about powering back up immediately after paper toweling the phone off then finish drying with the microfiber cloth.

I love the Zagg for everything but the screen. It's got an odd, orange-peel/pleather like texture that is super grippy. Because of this, It's PERFECT for the back and sides (Full Coverage costs the same as front+ back only), as it adds a texture that I can actually hold on to, but I don't like it on the screen, because it grips and makes the screen slightly less smooth. I have a RealLook on the front right now, but I didn't notice that the person i had put it on (I'm awful at it) got like 2 bits of dust in the very middle of it, so Im gonna switch it out for something else when I get paid again lol.

[Q] How easily does the ASF scratch?

I just got my Z Ultra GPE. I have the incipio dualshine case for it but the included screen protector is not very good and I ended up with a pretty poor application. I ordered a glass protector from Glass-M but it won't be here for a couple weeks. Do you guys think I can get by without a protector without scratches until the glass comes? I only really put it in my pocket. One edge of the protector I have didn't adhere properly and I'm afraid fuzz/dirt will get under and scratch it. Other option is to just use my S4 until I get the better protector.
I've had my Ultra since september and i don't have a single (noticeable) scratch on the front (i'm not using any additional protection). You'll be fine, but accidents happen, so it's not possibble to tell if yours will be scratch free in a few weeks. I do have a couple of scratches on the back though, but i couldn't care less.

@hamdogg mentioned an easy way to apply the protector, use water - added bones is the phone is waterproff
you should be able to remove and reapply the protector.
I've used mine since September with no case or added protection. Like @LordManhattan no scratches or wear at all. Dropped it a couple of times without issue.
Worth adding I dont use a stylus or pencil or anything other than fingers, pretty sure that would degrade the film pretty quick.

I can't see scratches on mine when I am using it. But turn of the screen and swing the phone side to side until the light hits it just right and I see all kinds of fine scratches. How easy is it to scratch? I'd say very easy. And it's not just fine scratches that plague this phone but also the fading of the oleophobic coating. You'll notice the part of the screen where you constantly touch gets rougher compared to the rest of the screen. In the end I'm just waiting for mine to scratch to the point where I will have to remove the ASF.
ಠ_ಠ
On mobile....
Ok thank you all for the feedback. I decided to just use it. If it's something that will scratch in 2 weeks of light use and no accidents I'd just assume return it.

Really not sure what to think
I really dont know what to think of it i wanted to buy the z ultra (the normal one..not google play edition because i cant get it in germany)
and the only thing that holds me back is..i can live with a not so well camery..i only take a few photos but i wouldnt be able to live with a device that just takes every single little fingerprint and scratches easily some people say it scratches easily ..some dont i wouldnt use anything else then my fingers to operate it..and carry it safely in my handbag
is it acceptable or really that bad? else i will probably go with a note 3 or a nexus 5 + nexus 7..so i have a small device on the go and a nexus 7 for watching streams/videos at home
I've got some scratches in the middle of my screen from one mistake placement in the same pocket as my keys. Surprised since the screen is supposed to be fairly resilient, I'll be looking into a protector shortly.
that kinda scares me x.x even if i would never put the device next to my keys..it will be most likely in that power cas einside my handbag x.x

It's still annoying though, so yeah, you should probably get a second protector, or just remove the ASF and go naked (it's glass after all, so it won't actually scratch unless you're really unlucky) or put the new third party protector on the glass. One protector is bad enough (how it feels to touch), so i can't imagine using two

tempered glass screen protectors

Tempered glass screen protectors. Anyone using them? I have put one on my iphone 5s and was really impressed. Found a no name brand and it worked well for $6. I can't pay alot for them. Goes against that sale instinct in me!
So it made me look for one for the mega. I had a cheap glare free plastic one on temporarily which was fine, but I wanted a glass one. Hard to find. Here's what I bought. $12.

Put it on last nite. I used the hinged method, with an extra piece of tape on the free side for precise placement. It went on beautifully, but I thought I was sloppy cause I saw a fingerprint after application, and I was really mad at myself. But I was so meticulous, I couldn't believe it.
The more I worked with it, I saw it wasn't a fingerprint, but a portion of adhesion that didn't stick the size of a fingerprint. I worked it more, maybe the warmth of my fingers finally got it to adhere. So I was not sloppy afterall. If you have this problem, just give it a little time. I almost was tempted to lift it and clean, resisted the thought, and I was rewarded for my patience. It's a perfect application 8 hours later.
I'm a perfectionist.... Couldn't do it lol selling my mega anyways

I can never fit a screen protector without getting a bit of dust underneath it, I'd hate to do that with a glass one.

I have applied 2. the iphone was perfect, the mega ended up with 1 tiny speck of dust on the top- off the screen, in the black perimeter. It only bothers me cause I know it's there. lol. If you use the hinged method, with that extra piece on the free end, and use a tape roll on the screen (tape rolled around your finger with the sticky side out) after you clean it, and right before you peel stage 1 on the protector do it again, you should be good. There are some pretty inexpensive glass ones now available. No way would I try it with a $30 one. I paid $12 for the mega one and that was big $$ for me!! lol
I also hear if you put your screen saver on after someone showers in the steamy bathroom it cuts down on all the dust! (tip from G) I never resorted to this, wanting to be comfortable at a table that has been cleaned well.
you need to use the hinge method, with some tape on the side of the sceen protector/phone before you peel of the bottom part, but theres another trick i learned which i practice and lets me put a screen protector 100% perfect...
you do all this in the bathroom, before you do tho, you turn on the shower with hot water, and let the room get steamy.. picks up all the flying arrownd dust, and your screen protector will be 100% perfect.
try it on, thank me later.
I have one of the screen protectors, i can say they are awesome, they make your screen feel so buttery smooth, I bought the Glass.m one and i havent got any finger print mark or oil, or even dust applying it.

Absolutely!!! If you mess up the application, you chalk it up to experience. Although if you are careful, check out videos on youtube, and follow the tips here, you should be good for a terrific application! Just be mindful of dust. That's your worst enemy and will create bubbles. So dust proof all you can. I work on my kitchen table that has been dusted and windexed. dust off all my tools and use tape rolls. roll the tape around your finger and pretend you are removing dog hair. But it is invisible dust. Then go for it! I never tried the shower trick. I hear it really helps. but again, make sure the surface you are working on is really clean. Good luck!
I found mine on ebay. Amazon has them, but charges shipping.

Tepshine / PThink Glass Protector - Good!
Got this one for my i527 a few days ago:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ICZ4GE6/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Went on very easily once I removed the hard shell case I had on the phone. Comes with moistened cleaning cloth and microfiber cleaning cloth and I didn't need to mess with hinging or scotch tape or anything else. Used both cloths to clean the screen and quickly applied the screen protector and NO TRAPPED DUST.
It's only been a few days, but no bubbles, no slipping, and everything seems to work with no lag. Even hovering still works.

just got mine from overseas for a whooping penny. Only problem is the button is sunk down a little bit. guess ill get use to it. putting it on is easy. you can lay it on and slip it around before you push on the middle to get it to set. mine came out perfect
Just be careful on where you get it, I got my first one and the glass got messed up from the cleaning I did and when I tried to get the lint hair out of the adhesive part of the screen it broke. Now on to my second glass (privacy shade) and the only defect is that it is a little too thick for touch response but it serves it's purpose (touch still responsive at times)

i have it on my Mega ( i9205 ) and i must say it saves the life of the screen. dropped it several times and only thing that breaks is the temperred glas so i ordered several times on ebay and apply goes easy, just clean the screen and see if the bottom and the top fits then drop it on the screen
it will apply by it self in a minute
then just gently push it till all ends are applied.
and to be sure use a hair dryer over it.
got my 3rd tempered glass now since 26-05-2014 and still no scratches/burst of something weird its just perfect.
