[Q] help, need stability in KitKat 4.4.2 - Dell Venue

I have a Dell Venue 7 3730 with a stock ROM 4.4.2. I hate it, its so unstable. And desperately looking for a custom ROM to replace it. I don't care about warranty as its second had already and I have rooted it.n apps crash all the time, Facebook, gmail, camera, etc... All of then crash almost all the time and is unpredictable. Other apps refuse to even run at all, crashing instantly on loading. The system ui constantly crashes and yes I do get random reboots from time to time.
Any suggestions on a good lite ROM? Or anyway to stabilize this stock?

I have no problems on either 4.4.2 or 4.3, if an older version OS worked well for you perhaps flash back to it.

There are no custom roms that I know of for these tablets, there are 3 different stock roms, 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4.2, My tablet is 3830, which is basically a larger version of your tablet, I use both 4.3 and 4.4.2 stock roms, they both work well for me.

I wonder what is going wrong then, I had issues with this even before I rooted it. Just won't keep apps alive especially Facebook, constantly crashes all the time.

My Venue 8 is on 4.4 and my screen just blacks out for absolutely no reason in the middle of using it. I'm considering contacting Dell for a replacement. I have already factory wiped it twice but still happens. Not going to rely on root and custom roms to fix it in case it's not a software issue.

No ideal I currently dual boot 4.4.2 and 4.3, so I can easily switch between OS, both OS work great for me, no problems with any apps, I really don't know what is wrong with your tablet, or if downgrading will help you or not.

let find the problem, shall we?

Any idea how we can track down the problem? I am well versed in Linux OS, and I know Linux should like to log everything, so how do we track this issue and come up with a solution? I've looked at logcat but I don't make much sense of it, if only I knew what I was looking for... Sorry android development is still some what new, though I have been a sole Linux user for decades now. Any help is much appreciated. Looking at the forums, I am not the only person it seems...
Thanks,
Todd, E.T.

If it was me, I would download SDC's 4.4.2 system.img unpack it, pull the system from my tablet, diff -r and see if they are different I suspect they are different.
Ideally you would want a system image pulled from a tablet that has no problems, then compare with yours, then naturally install the good system dump on your tablet.

[Q] ota from 4.4 to 4.4.2 ended with "No Command" screen

OTA Kit Kat update and ended up with an error, followed by bootloop "No Command" screen. I was stock rooted and did have app ops loaded but never used it. I've never had an ota go this badly before. I've read this is happening to many n4, n5, n7, and n10 users. I was able to overwrite the stock 4.4 image back on without formatting my data but this was lame! Now I'm not sure how to trust getting to 4.4.2. I could fix this but many users are going to really lose respect for android over upgrades like this. I've seen posts by others saying Google was replacing regular users devices that had this happen... that can't be good for android.
Does anyone know what really causes this???
sorry really wasn't a question...

"stock rooted"....
Just about 99% of people who have rooted devices and either side-loaded or received the OTA normally have experienced problems. Its a vanilla Android device...that's the reason we buy Nexus devices right? To have that pure Android experience? I don't understand why people feel the need to root and flash on a Nexus device and then they complain and cry like its Google's fault that they borked their machine. Instead of waiting and doing it the PROPER way as it was intended.
Guess what? I have a stock, untouched Nexus 10 and I haven't had a single problem with getting the original Kit Kat release and the 4.4.2 update. My machine has functioned perfectly fine throughout the whole process. I think you rooters/flashers are the only ones experiencing the issues....I wonder why....
Problem in my opinion is people are trying stuff they don't understand. Same reason why devs stop releasing fw/mods etc.
If you want a rooted and modded device you simply need to read read read. Understand what you are doing, don't simply copy paste stuff from the web.
My nex10 is rooted, running stock with a few mods (xposed) including transparency, no problems whatsoever.
But I did go through the whole process with a few hickups.
My girlfriend has a stock nex7 2013 and nex4 and doesn't have any issues at all when new fw is rolling out.

[Q] How to restore to HC?

Hi all!
Could you be so kind and help me revert back to honeycomb stock?
I know it sounds crazy, but I cant stand anymore how slow and laggy CM 10.1 I currently use is on this device. I've tried a lot of things like factory reset, reflushing lates nightly etc. Still horribly slow and at times totally unresponsive.
My ultimate goal is return back to task650 rom.
However I cannot find any HC stock images. I do not think that I can simply flush HC rom in CM 6.0.3.1 recovery.
I was only able to find hc-3.2_touchwiz_ux-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip from pershoot.
Please advise! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Not sure where to find an HC-image yet, but what about trying Omni-ROM 4.4.2 KitKat newest build (+ A1-Kernel)?
It still has got some quirks, like bluetooth-audio not working or slow Video-decoding, but the rest is quite good and fluid now.
Thanks for your reply! However we are talking about my wife tablet and she needs video/cameras and BT.
So, unfortunately KK is out consideration at this point.
By the way, is KK Omni really that better? Thought I guess anything is better then touching screen and seeing touch and then waiting a couple of seconds for an action to really happen. I do not know what Google changed in memory management, but it now doesn't hold a candle against older versions. At least for such old device as Tab 10.1 is.
If your wife doesn't need much features, go for Omni 4.3. Its very smooth and stable enough for daily use.

Camera works; Bluetooth works also, just not streaming audio to a bluetooth-audio-device; Videos also work. Lokally stored seem to be better than streamed (YouTube, gameone, etc.)

Then... What about JellyBean3 (Android 4.3.1)?
I think most if not all you need is already compatible on that and it is a lot better in any case, thought.

Even 4.1.2 cm10 was superior,... What do you think you can expect from a Kitkat-Build?
IMHO, yes it is, even with those little quirks...
...and not to be mean, but I really don't think any 4.2-build can be called stable... They all have heavy idle-times/"hangs" up to a minute, if you've got some CPU&IO-Load-Hungry apps installed and running...

Well... May be it is my bad luck... I do not remember any CM build of any version that was smooth as Task650 rom.
So, you suggest to try rollback to 4.1? I though they stopped development.
Wife use BT streaming... I just got her nice LG headphones.
I guess I softened the problem a little bit for now by removing all apps that create background services and account. FB, LinkIn etc.
It helped a little bit.

Nope. I think you should rather try a 4.3.x-based build.

OK google everywhere, stock 4.3??

Anyone been able to get this going on 4.3? I thought it was spose to work on 4.3 up. But while I get the audio history etc settings, I'm not getting the extra two related to using it from any screen and from the lockscreen. I've switched to US English. It all worked fine on my N7. Just wondering...

You're not the only one. I've been searching daily and trying different things to see if I could get it to kick in. I tried tricks that people have posted but I'm just like you. I get the Audio History settings but not the additional settings in the OK Google detection area. I went as far as wiping my phone and starting from scratch just to see. Still no luck. I am rooted and am using a different phone running 4.4.3 but the same results. My wife is purely stock and her situation is identical to ours. Bummer

Bump.
I have the Galaxy S3 T999, stock, not rooted, Jelly Bean 4.3, Google search 3.5+, Play services 5+. Audio History is on. I've tried searching OK Google Everywhere and Unleash the Google. I factory reset my phone, and didn't use any data restore programs at all. Play services auto updated, and I updated my Google Search app. STILL no luck. Re-searched the OK Google Everywhere and the Unleash the Google phrases.
Nothing doing. Can somebody help us figure out what's going on?
And here I thought it was just me... I'm glad I found this thread. I was able to get it to work on my stock N7 with 4.4 but can't on my stock Galaxy S4 or stock Galaxy Tab 2 7", both running 4.3...
It's pretty disappointing. I checked a friend's phone who has the same exact phone and software as me but she has the OK Google everywhere option. Oh well I'll sit here and cry with you guys until something magically changes.
Fortunately for me I FINALLY have this activated. Turns out that the problem for me personally was due to the ROM that I am running. I'm rooted so if anyone here is I would advise you to check out this link because it fixed it for me right way. Good luck everyone.

I reinstalled archiport beta and immediately got ok google everywhere available. 4.3 is more stable for me, but if use this feature enough to wanna put up with a less stable rom. Has anyone on stock 4.3 tried the method ccw linked?

I've just tried it myself, switching back to stock 4.3 after archiport 4.4 beta was getting unstable. Unfortunately this method didn't work, and I think it's a 4.3 thing. Bugger that, as if really use this feature, but am not quite prepared to get a new phone yet. There is an xposed module to get this kinda working, but again just for 4.4.

My wife is on stock 4.3 and she doesn't have the feature either so you could be right. I wish you the best of luck because I truly feel your frustration. If it makes you feel any better though now that I actually have it I only use it to goof around and that's becoming less and less. My family is sick and tired of me saying "Ok Google" every 10 minutes.

[Q] Anyone else finding lollipop glitchy?

Hey,
I just received my Nexus 9 from Amazon and I'm happy with it, but I just can't help but notice the glitchiness of lollipop already! It crashes constantly, sometimes I have to reboot it just to get it working again.
Does anyone know what I should do to improve the performance? I'm happy to flash a custom rom as long as it's not glitchy as 5.0.2.
Thanks,

I've had my Nexus 9 for over 3 months and I've never experienced glitches, crashes or lag with Lollipop. I do with CM12 on my old HTC One X, but that's to be expected. I've always rebooted my tablets once a day, usually before I put it on charge (one of my OCD compulsions), so maybe that has something to do with it. I also did a factory reset on my N9 right after it updated to 5.0.1 and set it up fresh.
Might need to do a factory reset as I never had an issue while I was stock. I was stock for like a month and never had any of those issues.
I also have not had problems. As others have said, do a factory reset. If you still have problems, flash the factory image with fastboot. Then if you still have problems it's time to rma the device because something is wrong with it.

No problems with mine. Maybe some badly written apps are causing bad performance?

Like everywhere above, I would recommend rebooting the device. If that doesn't help, I would try to get a new one.

What's the easiest way to restore the NT to it's original partition scheme?

Ok, I have an odd request if anyone can help. 16gb nook tablet here, it's been collecting dust for a couple years, but still works fine. I last flashed it with CM 12 I think. (it's at android 5.1.1) I'm pretty certain the partitioning was changed though. My goal is to reflash an older version of android. I want to downgrade it down to ice cream sandwich or gingerbread. I'm suspecting bad things are going to happen if I simply try to flash CM7 or CM9 or something without changing the partitioning back. Any suggestions on how best to accomplish this? I'm a bit rusty on my ROM flashing skills after a couple years of experimenting with windows tablets instead of android.

How about taking it back to stock and then doing whatever you have in mind after that? This "last-ditch" un-brick procedure might do it: http://bishoptec.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/?
FWIW, I was running CM 12.1 at one time and as far as I know there was no repartitioning involved in that flash, unless you did it as an addition for some other purpose.

hmm thanks, looking into that link now. I'm certain I repartitioned it at some point, but it was a long time ago now. I'm not certain what method I used. I've played around with way too many other tablets and phones since then, so it's hard to mentally keep straight what I've done with which device.
EDIT: Well, I've got it to CM9 now, I still have to flash gapps but otherwise its there. not sure how stable CM9 is, but I'm not sure which gingerbread version is best for stock + root without the B&N apps or skin. Any suggestions?

Wow, I applaud your resourcefulness in scaring up a CM 9 ROM and GApps! You must have a specific reason for wanting an old OS. As far as issues I suppose you could search this board for "CM 9" and see what people had to say about it in the past.

Doing so. Though I do have a specific reason for the older OS. It's a silly reason too one old game. Nethack. If the person who did the best android port had updated it since gingerbread it wouldn't be an issue, and if I could turn compatibility mode OFF on an app after jellybean, it also wouldn't be an issue. The game is nostalgic for me. (used to play it back on my Amiga 1000 in the 80s) My choices, play it on a newer OS and have the view zoomed in so you can see only a part of the map for each level (Boo!), Try my hand at porting it myself, or else simply get an old tablet running an old OS version again. (I don't think attempting to put old versions of android on a recent device would work out well) This seemed like the easiest choice. Got it running, and functioning how I want now I didn't have to adjust the partitioning at all. Your link was helpful, since in it it they referenced that the reflashing wouldn't effect changed partitions, which clued me in that it wouldn't be a big deal for downgrading the NT. so thanks!
