Are the sides of the black XZU aluminium? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

As the title asks...
I know it's definitely aluminium with the white variant, just want to confirm it's the same with the black

Its not all aluminum BTW. At first I thought so too until my 1year old son dropped my phone and it got a scuff on the top corner. I can now see that its painted. The left and right sides are aluminum but the top and bottom bezel is PC plastic, something that is rarely ever mentioned. And I assume the black version is the same only it will be less obvious because the plastic underneath would also be black.

Ah that's interesting to know, thanks.
Anyone have a black one can confirm that both the sides are aluminium and not just painted plastic?

theyre painted plastic with some aluminum panels on the side probably for the antennas.
you can tell which panels are aluminum or plastic by the lighting and reflection the panels give off.
i have a white one and noticed it a while back, i think the frame inside is aluminum though.

The Google Play description for the device says it's made of glass fibre polyamide, not metal.

[Q] Replacing Cracked Screen, question about the adhesive

Hi all, so I'm in the middle of replacing the digitizer for my TB. Got the new digitizer hooked in - there is supposed to be adhesive included, but I'm not sure what form it has taken. I have a clear piece of plaster with 2 printed tabs that say "Please peel off this mask before application" and "Please peel off this mark after application". I also have a white sticker looking thing, when I peel the paper back a see a clear piece of plastic inside. The only adhesive I've seen before goes around the sides - is the thunderbolt a clear platic adhesive that covers the whole surface? I'm assuming maybe one of these is a free screen protector they might have included? Pic of both attached
Edit: white sticker-looking one is a bit thinner than the width of the screen, am I supposed to cut this into strips to go around the outside?
Now that I go back and look - the listing I bought from didn't actually mention any adhesive, so I'm not 100% either of these necessarily are the adhesive.

It looks identical to the screen protectors from verizon, peel #1 off, apply to screen, peel #2 off, squeeze air bubbles out

use an exacto knife and cut thin strips odd the white adhesive. Be careful not to cover sensors or have it too wife so that you can see it on the screen. Make sure you put enough along the bottom or you'll have the soft key lights bleed on the screen something fierce. Good luck!

um.... Not sure what these other guys are talking about, but the guy I know that does these uses a 2mm tape made specifically for this task produced by 3M. If someone sent you a sheet of crap you gotta cut up to make work, you got hosed in my opinion. I believe in doing a job right, and THAT doesn't strike me as how they do it at HTC. I believe Amazon has the correct 3M tape for this job.

Can you give me a link. It is greatly appreciated.
Here ya go.
They also have 3mm and 1mm, but 2mm is recommended. Just put it on the outer edge of the digitizer, don't let it overlap the black bezel. I highly recommend layering 2 strips on each side or you will not have enough space between the glass and LCD and eventually they will touch which will make it look like there is water inside it.

[Q] Sanding front bezel

So I have seen this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683079&page=1
Where someone sanded the back of their Evo LTE and I liked the effect (though most don't). My question is about the front bezel of the phone, has anyone tried sanding that? My poor Evo took a spill and I have some chips around where the black bezel meets the silver strip that goes around the phone and I am wondering if that black front bezel is actually aluminum too under the black finish. From the chips in it i would say yes, it looks like the black finish scrapped away a bit revealing what appears to be aluminum underneath.
If it is indeed aluminum my plan is to sand and polish the front bezel to hopefully match that silver strip that goes around the phone which I think will look great, even better than the original black if done right, and if i mess it up I will just paint it flat black and at least the chips in the finish will be covered. What do you guys think? If I go ahead with this (which I am probably gonna do soon, like tonight) i'll post pics of the results. This is my first attempt to physically mod a phone, should be fun. Though I really hope i don't screw this one up.
On an interesting side note, i just realized that I have been a member since 2006 and this is my first post. Talk about lurking.
The front housing is a solid piece of aluminum, which includes the band on the side. If you were to attemp sanding down the finish, I'd take the phone apart first. Another option, if you take the phone apart, would be to sand blast the chassis. That would give you a more consistent finish.

If you find some paint that matches the bezel. let me know. Its not exactly flat black, more of a matte semigloss.
Krylon Fusion Camouflage Ultra Flat Black is actually a perfect match.

[Q] Peeling off paint

Just wondering if the frame paint is not peeling off?
The reason is that I put a full tight protected silicone case, but I need to take it of regularly for charging purpose as I also use magnetic dock (I don't want to sacrifice my USB flap, either).
I heard that the upper and bottom parts of the frame are made of painted plastic.
Is it peeling off after some time?
I believe that the whole frame is anodised aluminium, I got that from the info-graphic published by sony, and the fact that mine has gone for a skate and the bottom bezel looks not to be plastic.
No peeling I dropped mine and on top of the frame I got a deep scratch but it's still black so no peeling
Sent from my C6833 using xda app-developers app
Not even a scratch or anything. The frame is still black.

My phone drop off and hit a corner, and the corner is peeling, but under that peeling it's still black, i think it have a thin coat of something like glossy barnish or something like that.
And the buttons... The buttons are a completeliy deception, here you have a picture:
It's like rusty metal.
Mine is peeling, there's a white layer underneath it. (I have a white unit).
I don't know what's coming off - aluminium (is that possible? I guess so) or some paint...

I have a black unit and it feels like powder coating however as in most cases with matte finish the panels on my device has started to become glossy after the grease on my hands rubbing and rubbing against the surface in long term. Just like a keyboard become glossy after years of typing..
Question for you people that have scratches on it. How? How are you doing this? I've had mine since release and I have zero scratches or marks on the body, and I've never used a case or anything on it. Never.
So the question is; are you guys throwing it around and putting it in places with keys and other stuff, because I don't understand how it's possible to make the power button as ugly as Confus3d's button.
- Yes, I use my Ultra as my main phone, and I have it with me wherever I go
- Never used any protection
- Yes, it has hit the floor a couple of times
- Yes, I take it with me and use it when I'm out on town... not being sober.
Still after this, I don't have a single scratch. You guys must be throwing it around like a ball

I use the phone without case and only have scratches in the back and a little bit in the lense glass, and i don't know why my button is rusted, because i've never used the phone in the water.
My last phone was an iphone 4s and two years later the buttons are perfect!
I use it very carefuly, in fact the phone has kiss the floor only once and it was a friend (a stupid friend).
I think the button has some kind of paint on it, but i'm prety sure that it's not an aluminium button
I've used mine with and without case only scratch is on top and I drop it like 2 meters from me getting out from a car rest of the phone looks brand new and I have it from last year when they put this baby on sale
Actually I'm impress by the build quality also use it as daily phone so no problem here the top scratch is my fault and survived marvellous without case
I don't have screen protector and not a single scratch
Very happy with it waiting for zu2

I used the KLD Icelandic case and now the KLD Enland case.
Have had quite a few drops (~10) with most being only 2-2.5 ft (the height of my bed lol [emoji12])
There is 'peeling' on the corners of the phone due to friction between the corners of the phone and the corner of the case. There is one (relatively speaking) giant area of peel off in the lower part of the front edge. It is kind of 'contained' within the microphone slit.
I'd send pics, but it is 3:30am out here, you'll have to wait for 4-5 hours more [emoji16].
Edit: The power button is spotless, BTW.

Could it possible that the white version is made from plastic, while the black is fully anodized aluminium?
Mine is also white.
Looking forward for the pictures, warfareonly... Thanks.

The top and bottom panel is plastic while the sides are made of aluminum. Plastic to probably help the antennas. At least on the black version.

This means, we cannot avoid peeling paint on top and bottom parts of the frame. It will peel off, eventually. :crying:
The question now: how to make it last longer...?
I realize, this is a thing that I don't like from Sony. I have some Sony gadgets, most of the chrome painted parts are peeling off...

got my xperia z2 plastic looks worn out

So i don't know where to begin, i ordered a xperia z2 the day it was announced but i was also going on a vacation with my family, so i asked sony if i would get my phone before leaving, they said no so i assumed they cancelled my preorder, anyway when i got home i decided to order it again from a retailer instead of directly from sony, when i got it i noticed that it looked well worn out, the plastic had spots and bits where the color seemed to be missing the metal frame also had very light faint spots, so i decided to ask for a refund.
This time i decided to order directly from sony, but it turns out the first one i ordered did not get cancelled so i received two xperia z2's in the mail, so i opened one of them and noticed the same problem, the plastic looked worn out so i decided to open the second one same problem there.
So i wounder is this normal? it looks like someone polished down the texture the plastic has to be completely smooth, it's missing that rough like texture a little here and there, basically causing the plastic frame to have tiny bits being smooth in the shape of small lines so to put it simple, black or dark lines at the top of the frame.
one phone even has a cut in it so it looks like someone took a needle sized knife and sawed in the plastic frame, and one has the protective plastic film on incorrectly, exposing 1 cm of the phone itself.
if i were to be entirely honest it dosn't look very new or premium with these problems, but considering i have three of them with the same problem i guess it's normal, please note they are all worn down differently lines are at random places so nothing identicle.
What plastic are you talking about? The phone is aluminum and glass.

Well, to be specific there is some plastic around the aluminum frame.
Surrounding the glass and the ports are plastic the middle band is aluminium.

Mine is textured but consistent along the entirety of the device. On both my Z2 phone and tablet. It looks exactly like the stock photos you'll find on Google Images. If you have something else, I'd take it back. Not sure how it could be worn already unless someone used it for a drop test video and then returned it. Or its a manufacturing defect.

How is the Dura-Skin holding up on your V10?

Just wondering how durable the Dura-Skin is on the front top & bottom of the phone?
How's it holding up?
Any wear marks, scratches ETC?
I've only had mine for maybe 2 weeks but it's still perfect. I even accidentally like spiked it onto the bathroom floor like a football and it's still perfect everywhere.
I started with a skinomi skin... it looks great.. and I didn't use the provided screen protector or back protector. but all other surfaces were covered. I did have a problem with the skin sticking to the corners of the rails so I trimmed them before they peeled off too much then put the thin TPU case on...
I like the case. doesn't add any bulk and adds a bit of grip.
Still perfect but ihave a little wear n tear on the side rails im gonna change them for black rubber ones when they get released ` will make the phone more durable and lighter
The Duraskin on the top and bottom of the phone is perfect. However, the coating on my back cover started peeling on the bottom edge near the USB port within a few days. It's not bad, but its there.
Hard to capture in a picture.
