I'm thinking about getting the Sony Xperia Z2, yet I have a couple of questions. - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings XDA! ,
I'm currently rocking a Nexus 4, for which my contract ends really soon.
So the Sony Xperia Z2 has been high on my list, yet it seems the Sony Xperia Z3 is around the corner. I'm not surprised about this, because I know full hand that Sony is on a 6 month upgrade cycle.
Personally I dig the design of the Z2 a lot more, and will definitely go with the Z2. I do have a couple of little questions about the Z2.
- Is the overheating issue ''that bad''? I've been reading about not being able to record for long when in 4K recording mode.
- What are the chances of the glass cracking on the back because with the heating issue? I've been really careful with my LG Nexus 4, and even have a bumper case around it, yet it still cracked. I didn't let the phone fall and think it was caused by the phone becoming really hot.
- How are Android updates? Will the Xperia Z2 receive Android 4.4.4 or Android L?
- Will the Sony Xperia Z2 receive most of the Z3 software features? Things like the updated Sony UI (which seems to be based of the Google Experience Launcher).
That's all. I can't wait to hear what XDA has to say . Go ahead with you're own impressions about the phone, because who knows!

-heating: yes and no, i face little heating issues with my Z2, it gets warm occasionaly and 4k just cant reach past 31 minutes before closing the camera to cool down
-the self cracking glass seems to be a myth it seems and the device its self is tough, i dropped it on may things like a clumbsy nut... and its to be honnest, visibly fine.. it feels fine tooo
- updates, the device will recieve updates if needed for 18 months after release, this is often stretched out by a extra year sometimes (12 months left on update plan)(android 5.0 Lemon or L is likely to come and so is 4.4.4)
- as usual Xperias will always take on the current UI that being Z3 ui , z2 should recieve this new UI soon to come along with many other xperias which are currently updated
Conclusion: device is amazing in my opinion but ealier batch models are alot more faulty then any other versions due to some huge manufacturing issue they had, so if you get a fauly device just contact sony repair centre as the xperia international 2 year warrenty will cover you and will give you entitlement to free repair or replacement

Most other devices that support 4k video restrict recording to around 5 mins, people who use 4k video can better that before the thermal cutoff so you are in a better position than users of similar devices.

Hardware is near identical so I don't see any reason why all the z3 software features won't reach the z2.

My current contract ends in February. What would the best choice be, getting a Z2 or Z3?
It's still 4/5 months away, but if we take the current prices then it will look like this:
Sony Xperia Z2: 150 call & 1GB internet for 35 euros, the phone will be free.
Sony Xperia Z3: 150 call & 1GB internet for 35 euros, the phone will cost a additional 149 euros.
Another thing I'm wondering is the Z2 vs Z3 screen brightness. Comparing both to my Nexus 4, they both looks better. Comparing the Z2 and Z3 and most say the Z3 is brighter.

Besides the point but wow those deals suck, I got £27.99 for 600 mins, unlimited data / texts with a free phone (plus £30 cashback) on the Z2.
I don't see the Z3 as worth €149, for what are essentially software tweaks.

buy Z2 or wait for Z3

hey guys!
well, as the topic says should i go for Z2 or wait for Z3 as i don't want to lose the flagship title in just couple of months so what do you guys suggest? wont be able to buy Z3 if i bought Z2 and currently i am without any GOOD SMART PHONE (just using a bb curve for the time being).

It's really up to you if you want to buy the Z2 as of right now. Technology is always going to be moving forward, more so with Sony's 6 month release cycle, and there's always going to be something better in the future. If you keep waiting for the latest and greatest you'll never own a phone . But for the most part the Z2 is looking to be a very promising device, building upon the original Z and addressing most of it's issues. The Z3 might build upon the Z2 but it could also be a new device entirely, with it's own flaws in tow. IMO since you're using a Black Berry Curve, it would be a significant upgrade to get the Z2 and I'm pretty sure you'd be happy with that device . Also it's not like the Z2's hardware will be outdated anytime soon, it's come to the point where software needs to catch up with the hardware in these flagship devices.
Buy a Z2, Z2 will stay a flagship longer than the Z3, since Z3 won't be announced before October.
So, in short, i shall go with Z2. Ok then, Z2 it is. thanks mates.

well Xperia Z was announced in early January 2013,while Z1 in early September & Z2 in late February 2014
So average about only 6 months new flagship
My prediction is Sony will probably announce the Z3 on IFA 2014 or maybe they delayed & announce on CES 2015...
Well, i dont mind z3 at CES 2015 but IFA 2014 is early so thats the issue. I suggest that sony should launch a phablet and then after 6 months a normal sized phone and then phablet like samsung does. As i was a note series user so i never bothered about S series so it was one year cycle for me.
Z1 - $499, Z2 - $699, Z3 - $999. It's really a matter of time?

Actually, what my prediction is that it'll be released alongside Note 4.
Z was announced in 2013 Jan, but came in 2013 March
Z1 was announced in 2013 Oct end, but came by 10th December
Z2 was announced in Feb end and will come by April/May.
The first flagship of the year gets more exposure if you ask me.
For me it looks like that:
Z - buy
Z1 - skip
Z2 - buy
Z3 - skip
Z4 - skip
Z5 - skip
Z6 - buy
Really hope that Z2 will be enough for 2 full years. It has everything I need from a smartphone, and hopefully won't have faults like the Z. If Z had NC, IPS, bigger battery etc. i would probably keep it for at least one more year - because let's be honest - it is still more than enough...

Z1 was unveiled in IFA 2013,that is early September not end of October.
its delayed in UK does it means that it will be delayed in international markets as well?
It will be probably delayed. I think that the beautiful Z2 is so good that it exceeded Sony's expectations with a very wide margin, that's why Sony's delivery of the device will be delayed.

Delayed here in Australia until mid to late May. That's carrier stock only too. Widespread availability might not be until June...
At which stage you only have 3 months at best before the next model is released.
As good as the phone is, I simply can't support Sony for this reason. Destroys the community ROM base and a 3-4 month lag time for availability is simply unacceptable.

no wait for Z4 !!!
how u made up Z3 name! it s confirmed!
anyway u mean next xperia flagship so it s not good question think in this way;
IF u need Flagship SmartPhone so Buy one of the best available smartphone.
if u don't need and just wanna buy and can wait so long... so wait so long...................... cause there s always better phone in future!
:good:
I usually buy a flagship every two years. But ultimately it depends on the depth of your pockets.
lol Yeah, it drives my kids crazy. I'm old and own every coffee table I'll ever need so I can afford to play. In other words I buy a lot of phones based on fun rather than need.
I know you don't want to hear that but I'm going to give you an idea of what your looking at. I have a nexus 5, of the fall devices it was IMO the best of the lot. Outside of network slowdowns the phone never lags. It is always completely fluid. Everything opens so quick I'm pretty sure you could halve the time and I wouldn't be able to tell. I suspect as already stated in many of the first looks this phone is the same way. You are not going to experience a slowdown in the GUI unless its network related and you will be fully satisfied with its performance. This is something that is going to be true with any current flagship phone, flagship phones flat kick ass anymore. The only real question comes down to timing and money filtered through personal need. For someone who already has a decent phone but little money waiting might be a good idea. For someone who can easily afford a new phone waiting isn't going to change much because you cant tell if an app opened in .05 nano seconds instead of .04 nano seconds. I don't know how you rate that BB but your answer lies somewhere in what I just said. You just gotta figure out where you stand.
Really liked you reply mate.
Actually, i have decided to buy z2 but its kind of delayed so waiting for it...
tbh it really depends which design you like.....
it is rumored the Z3 is shifting the design to arc/omni balance.... whether this is true or not, sony is not sticking with just the omni balance design for the Z3.
Previous owner of sony/ericsson phones.... the arc looks nice but i prefer flat backs rather than the arc design. I myself is still wondering whether i should go with the Z2 (which is the last design of its kind) or Z3 which may look sexier and may have a smaller bezel than the Z2.
Better yet, if youre not in a rush, wait for the Z3 to be annouced or wait for the leaks, then decide which one you prefer. By the time Z3 is near the Z2 should be cheap enough to be purchased anyway. Its a win win situation.

But that would require me to have patience and deferred gratification.
I brought my first smartphone (Galaxy W) when the S2 was released......
I brought my S2 just after the S3 was released......needless to say the phone (if i'd brought it outright) was cheaper than when it was new tech.
As a result, I got an affordable price for my contract.
I FULLY intend to get the Z2, but by the time my contract is up for renewal, the Z2 will probably be at least 1, possibly 2 flagships out of date....it'll be seen as 'old tech' even though it'll definitely be an upgrade to me......it'll also be WAY cheaper than it is now......
For me, a win win situation......
Waiting will also give me a chance to read this forum for a few months and allow me to see what quirks this phone might have before I get it......

[Q] Before I make the jump from iPhone

Currently I own an iPhone 5s. Love the thing all around, but android has a spot in my heart as being the first smartphone to own. I wanted the Necus 5, but after reading up on the Xperia Z1/2, I want one of these a lot more. Now I'm with t-mobile on the jump program, but my iPhone is about 60% paid off. I have a few questions here.
•Tmobile has the Xperia Z and Zs. I've read this was mistaken to be the Z2, but then I read the specs were slightly off. The Z2 being a little bit better, but not hundreds of dollars more. If I could I want the Z2, but it looks like the only way to get it is to buy the unlocked international version for the full $600, right?
•With that in mind for anyone who has made the switch from i5 to this phone or one of the too android phones have you regretted it all. I don't want to get the feeling of wishing I had my i5 back or paid it off first. Lol
•Speaking on the Z1s if any of you have one or have fooled with one, how much different is it than the Z2? If it's not noticeable then I wouldn't mind barring the jump plan and getting ahold of the Xperia Z that way. Oh and yes, I will be rooting, customizing and all things of the sort. It's why I love android so I have to do that. Wait, are there plenty of mods and stuff for both the Xperia or is it limited? I know my nexus 4 had a lot.
If you will buy a Sony phone, Z2 is the best and only choice as of now. The only Sony phone better than Z2 is Xperia C with its huge battery life but that's about it. T2 Ultra battery life is also good but it's too big for me. In spite of what people say, there is a big enough difference with Z1 and Z2 but if you already bought the Z1, then no need to upgrade unless you have extra cash. Z2 to Z3 might even have a smaller difference unless Sony puts their A game and surprises us with Z3.
If you're coming from Z, it's really worth upgrading to Z2 because it fixed all the flaws of Z even though the design of Z is a little better than Z2 for me.

I was referring to the Z1s though, not just the Z1. It seems to be what Tmobile got instead of the Z2, which is in other countries.
I have an iPhone 5, which is not really that different to the 5s. I jumped ship a while ago.
This is not the first time I tried to switch to android. I hated android before on Motorola milestone and galaxy s3, but I have to say I'm really loving this phone. Sure, at the beginning I kinda missed my iphone as I wasn't really used to it. After I got everything going, this phone has been great. I especially love the noise cancelling. (without it I wouldn't have purchased it at the first place) it works just as well as those dedicated noise cancelling headphones, in my opinion.
The only things I miss on my iPhone right are the smaller screen, imessage and iTunes. Big screen is not really my thing... 4.5-4.7 inch would have been perfect.
Every phone has its pros and cons. Long story short, I don't regret switching to it at all.
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
There isn't much difference between Z1 and Z1s so Z2 is still the better phone. Z1 should have been the Z2 if Sony didn't skimped on the specs. Sony could have stopped Samsung's momentum last year. But still a job well done for Z2. If you have a friend that has a Z2, try feeling it because it's really hard to judge the phone without seeing it personally.

Z3X - Z Ultra successor shows up.

Looks like the Z3X is now real. Just showed up in the benchmark database with 6.2 inch 2K screen, 810 processor, 4GB RAM etc etc.
antutu.com/view.shtml?id=7935 and these guys reported it - gforgames.com/gadgets/qualcomm-snapdragon-810-undergoing-testing-44812 - they didnt know what is was lol.
If this is legit, then God exists. You made my day. Thanks. But 7.9mm thickness could be shaved off a little.
That is due to the 2/3rds format camera sensor that it rumoured to have

Awesome my next phone
I can't wait until 2015 that this phablet goes out ! I have the Xperia Z2, and i must say that i would love to have the same phone, but with a bigger screen, like Z Ultra...
I used to have the Z ultra last year in september, i was in love with this phone, except for the flash who's missing an the poor quality of the camera and the external speaker... but for everything else it's a great great phone, specially the screen ! I'm hesitating to buy it again, but as the IFA is coming in 2-3 weeks, i'm telling myself that is maybe better to wait as i was (pretty) sure that Sony will present the "Z Ultra 2"... But with this Z3X... i'm not sure anymore...
What do you think guys ?
I think the successor to the Ultra will be the rumored "Z3 Tablet Compact" - i.e. a device marketed as a tablet rather than smartphone. I am sure Sony will have more success that way.
The Z3X seems to be more of a camera centric device rather than a direct Ultra successor. Because of this, I consider the Z3 Tablet Compact to be the replacement and it would work, especially with a 7 inch screen. I don't think they will make an 8 incher considering that it would be close to the Z2 Tablet.
I would not like to go for a smaller screen on the next device and the camera part is covered through a QX10 - I would most probably opt for the tablet instead. I would be quite sure that it will have full phone functionality even if they push for the pure tablet related aspects in their marketing communication.
If this really come through then nice But for now, my Z Ultra is still enough. Well maybe when the battery died then
Nice find... I'm hanging out for a good camera phone that isn't thick like the galaxy k zoom. Hopefully this one gets announced at IFA

Any chance they got the resolution wrong? 16:10 seems like an awkward aspect ratio for a phone, and previously (in supposed leaks of the specs - I can't insert a link but you can google Xperia Z3X) the resolution was reported to be 2560x1152 which also matches the dimensions the phone was claimed to have (69.5×150.1×7.9mm). I guess it's a possibility that the benchmark did not have an option 2560x1152 and 2560x1600 was selected as the closest.
A leak shows up today about the Xperia Z3 Tablet compact, some people thought it'll be the Sony Xperia Z Ultra 2...
Well, sorry to disappoint them as much as i am but it's going to be a tablet, the 72 tablet successor more specifically...
I really hope they're gonna release a new Xperia Z Ultra... We'll know soon enough with the IFA in Berlin coming next week !

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is supposed to have a Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974) SoC and 3 GB RAM, so it can't be the device benchmarked here (unless the specs in the benchmark are faked or incorrect). Also, if the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is due to be announced and available very soon, it obviously can't feature a 20nm Snapdragon 810 (MSM8994) SoC as those won't become commercially available until some months into 2015.
For what it's worth, I spoke to Orange yesterday as I'm currently in my free upgrade period. They acknowledged I was using an Xperia Z Ultra and advised me to hang back on an upgrade till October when a replacement Ultra would be released.
I was a little confused and mentioned he was most likely referring to the Z3 Tablet Compact and the salesmen said: "No, we've defiantly received word from Sony a direct Z Ultra replacement will be released in mid October".
Think of it what you will, but personally I can't see it happening.

Any chance you could follow up and get more details, for example confirming the critical parts of the specs like the OLED display or the 22MP curved sensor? They will probably answer that they are bound by an NDA but it might be worth a try.

Well could you ask again anytime soon if you happen to pass by.. I will definitely pass Note 4 if there is a Z Ultra successor. Fingers crossed :fingers-crossed:

Is an Ultra Z still applicable in 2014?

Hello
I have been interested in an Ultra Z since the first day it's launched but never ended up having one due to a main reason. With a huge screen on the device it is every graphic designer's dream to be able to draw naturally like paper and pencil. Unfortunately it doesn't work as well as the Galaxy Note series.
Now that I have gotten myself a Galaxy Note Pro, my quest in searching for a device that allows natural handwriting and drawing is over. Yet the Ultra Z remains a attractive device and the price has dropped significantly. I think the lack of purchase has causes the price drop faster than many other flagship phones from last year. Nevertheless with just AUD350 the phone has become even more attractive.
I am just wondering if you Ultra Z users think if it is a sane decision to buy a phone that is a year old now? Are there now better alternatives out there with a similar screen size? Also has Sony mentioned if the phone is reaching its end of life soon (including Google Play Edition)?
Sent from my SM-P905 using Tapatalk
I'm thinking the same as yourself, as it is becoming more affordable here in the US as well.
Seen it as inexpensive as $250, either new or gently used.
Only negative is no LED for flash, which means no light for emergency use.
I'm looking for an inexpensive LTE mobile phone, this MIGHT BE IT.
Another negative; no removable battery.

If you have no real use for a camera, then yes this phone is still a beast.

”screen flashlight ” in the Google play store works pretty well on our Z ultra.
I've had mine for about a year now, and it's still a very powerful device. You won't have any issues with running apps and games. Keep in mind that we also have the Google Play Edition of the Ultra, and it will receive Android L fairly quickly after release, and we'll be able to port it to our model.
Screen is still very good, battery life is (still) good, camera is not great, and performance is top notch. It was worth it to me when I paid $1000 for it a year ago, and it's definitely worth it now.

I was afraid at first i thought it will be too big. But now i can imagine myself having smaller Screen even samsung Note seems small now, Too small.
As it has been said, if don't care for the Camera much Z Ultra is the Best.

Hello
I have been interested in an Ultra Z since the first day it's launched but never ended up having one due to a main reason. With a huge screen on the device it is every graphic designer's dream to be able to draw naturally like paper and pencil. Unfortunately it doesn't work as well as Galaxy Note series.
Now that I have gotten myself a Galaxy Note Pro, my quest in searching for a device that allows natural handwriting and drawing is now over. Yet the Ultra Z remains a attractive device and the price has dropped significantly. I think the lack of purchase has causes it to price drop faster than many other flagship phones from last year. Nevertheless with AUD350 the phone has just become even more attractive.
I am just wondering if you Ultra Z users think if it is a sane decision to buy a phone that is a year old now? Are there now better alternatives out there with a similar screen size? Also has Sony mentioned if the phone is reaching its end of life soon (including Google Play Edition)?

Depends on how you look at it. If performance is the metric, you won't be disappointed. if you use camera extensively, well look elsewhere. and the last one, the battery life. It's quite good but if you compare with devices nowadays, there are better alternative. I'd say wait for the Z3X (if ever) in about a month. If it doesn't come up, then i can imagine the Z Ultra will be cheaper along the way.
Thank you all for your inputs!
I personally do not use mobile cameras for artistic purposes. I already have a Dslr so the camera is only for note-taking or public transport schedule. I think I just want a phone that is slightly faster than my HTC M7. It's true that there are better performers out there since this is a year old phone but any faster CPU than a Z Ultra has little to do with my uses.
Also there isn't a mobile phone at the moment that is as massive as this. I love the idea that I could read books with it in my bed. The Galaxy Note Pro is too heavy to hold in the hand for a long period of time.
The only bummer is the speaker. I have been spoiled by the M7's speakers for a year plus, very little devices top its superb sound quality. It will be the only downgrade for me should I go for this phone.

Keep in mind that we also have the Google Play Edition of the Ultra, and it will receive Android L fairly quickly after release, and we'll be able to port it to our model.

I'm not so sure that the GPe version will receive Android L before the Xperia version would.

Is this legit? How long does a flagship Xperia unit has before it reaches EOL?
18 months supposedly. The Z Ultra should receive L, but the Z3 and Z2 should get it first. I would guess at least a few months or more after L is released.

I am pretty sure that the GPe will get L quickly since one of the key reasons for the program is almost Nexus updates. Google will push the L to Sony soon after official release.
All GPe devices should have L shortly after the Nexus series and I haven't seen any indication to the contrary.
It is also important to remember that Ultra GPe is vanilla Android with just the EQ added (Sony ClearAudio) and otherwise identical to a Nexus.

Since the Ultra's release, Sony has already pushed out a few prompt updates for it. I personally do not think this device is any type of priority for them. We will be damn lucky to get another update imo, and after we do, I wouldnt expect any more.
If it was Google handling the updates, things might be different, but this is a two generation old Sony device, not a Nexus. It is very close to EOL.

That'd suck if it's not getting L. HTC has confirmed even the M7 which was released before Ultra will get L
However Ultra hasn't been selling as well as they'd like they have probably even given up on releasing a successor.

Im sure it will get L, but I personally don't think we should expect more.
Recently, got a Z Ultra (from a Mega 6.3). Don't regret it for the most part. Screen isn't the brightest in direct sunlight (not that the mega was that much better), Camera quality isn't as good as my mega imo, sound is lower (that my mega) I'm assuming because of the waterproofing, and kinda a fingerprint magnet. Other than that no complaints.

Normally 18 months?. I would think the GPe will get L before the Sony ZU. it was months before we got 4.4, although we did get 4.4.4 very fast
Just bought a second hand for AU$300. This shady guy sold me one with overheat issue. The phone isn't even very hot but it just freezes on me and stuck in boot loop.
BOOT LOOPS, My Favorite Breakfast Cereal!
The reason may well be because of the fact the BEAST is having one of America's favorite breakfast cereals...Boot Loops! After several minutes of this heat is generated in the upper left corner around the camera area. Liken it to running around a track numerous times - it takes a toll on it/you physically.
I've read it on one of the threads several times over the months just after the XZU became available as a GPe. Many new users were trying to root, flash ROM's, and fix the partitions since they're different on the GPe's and their devices suffered the boot loops too.
Download Flashtool, run a TA Backup and then flash a stock .ftf if that's what your looking to do. Providing this device is not HOT. Why would one sell a BEAST of a device with a bad case of the boot loops to begin with? Better yet why on earth would you buy one in that condition? All kinds of flags would've/should've been raised - didn't you even question how it got that way or why it was in that state to begin with?
They have these bad boys are selling for $314.99 at http://www.expansys-usa.com/sony-xperia-z-ultra-c6833-unlocked-lte-16gb-black-251963/ in the United States. Expansys sells internationally direct from the comfort of your own safe and legal hideout. THAT would've been a more prudent thing to do AND you would've gotten a warranty on top of it!
Just sayin'

Broke my Z2 and it is unrepairable. Should I buy Z2 or Z3?

Hi guys!
Unfortunately I totally broke my Z2 a month ago, just by dropping it from my pocket (wow). Now I want to stuck with sony devices and I only have money for another Z2 or a Z3, they are the same price.Which one should I go for? I dont care about the +200MHz in the Z3. I don't like the speaker cut outs on the Z3 and the notification LED is also not really great, however the device is newer and the shape of it is better. Any opinions?
I definitly would choose the Z2, especially because of the more color accurate display, the Z3 has a horribly blueish tint (and yes, you could calibrate the whitepoint, but this reduces the maximum brightness and the contrast ratio).
I also read a lot of customer complaints about the glass on the rear of the Z3 just cracking out of the blue.

If you consider using flip case, get z3 as it has magnetic sensor.
If you don't care about it get z2. They are the same devices + you get awesome headphones ?

Both phones are going to be dead in the next months or so, no Android "N" for them. I would avoid them, but if you can only spend so much I would buy the Z2 again.
I wouldn't recommend buying both, since these devices are getting outdated soon. I love my XPERIA Z2, but like people say.... Other devices are a better choice right now.
All android devices will be outdated in a year or year and a half, what are you talking about? Why is that even relevant? If you deem a software update worth your 650 dollars then go for it, im fine with 5.1 and a little more money in my pocket for more relevant things than a smartphone toy.
Well I don't care about getting updates for the next 2 years. They will get android M and I will be completely fine.I don't want to pay much more for example a Z5.And of course I can always install a custom rom which is based on a newer android version.
Z2 but for me I wish I did get Z3 for dual sim so depend on your need.
I would buy a z3. It's unofficial development is a bit better than z2. But beside this I love the way look z2 if unofficial development is not that important to you buy an z2.
Z3 is better
