Rooting my new T-Mobile GS5 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I just switched to T-mobile, and pick up a new GS5, but I don't understand the root method. Can some point me in the right direction?

here is the TWRP recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/general/twrp-2-7-0-0-odintar-recovery-t2844321
Make sure you have the Samsung drivers installed on your computer so odin recognizes your phone
Just install it in Odin .
Then download a rom of choice and follow the install instructions for the particular Rom

The easiest way is to downgrade to an earlier version that you can use towel root to root with .. As far as I know their is no way to root NH5 as of now .. I could be wrong but Im pretty sure ..Have you rooted a samsung device before ?

There's a way to root every version of software they're released. Since the bootloader is unlocked, all that's needed is to flash a custom recovery, then when TWRP asks you if you want to root, just click yes, and you're done. It'll always be like this unless they lock the bootloader.

Google is your friend. Don't take this the wrong way, but if people keep giving you links, you'll never find what you're looking for yourself. If you just google "TWRP Galaxy S5", the first link is the right one. It'll tell you how to flash it as well using ODIN.

Why? Tmobile does even care.

No I know that, but Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle does care.. the dongle won't work on a rooted device. I had a Samsung galaxy note 10.1 that I rooted but I used triangle away to reset counter and it then would work. I use my tablet and dongle most nights and my other allshare in my car for my appradio. The S5 and Tab S will be first devices I didn't root

Any news on Knox?

Its been awhile since i rooted my phones and flashed roms. I juat rooted my s5. But i dont believe i installed a custom recovery. In the past i always downloaded rom manager and installed cwm through the app. But it says device not compatible. Or ud download goo manager and install twrp through that app and i dont see the version for my tmobile s5 listed. Can someone help me with flashing a custom recovery. And recommend any stable custom roms i should try out. Also if there is anything i need to be careful of when flashing i dont care about tripping my knox counter. My device isnt warrantied anyway.

For the moment, yes. Attempting to return to a previous stock ROM, even via ODIN, will fail - I tried this myself last night. ODIN hangs on trying to install the last part of the ROM (the bootloader, if I remember right). If you do try to use ODIN to restore a stock ROM, you will need to run a repair install of the 4.3 ROM (you'll lose all data on the phone). Fun stuff.
So in short, we're locked & unrooted if we update using the official update via Verizon's update software.

You can try to root with kingo (google it, xda won't allow links to it) but you may be out of luck on unlocking the bootloader again unless someone finds another exploit.

Aren't both the S4 and N3 4.3 builds rooted? Maybe you're thinking bootloader unlocking???
After OTA my n2 lost root.
I can also confirm, that Kingo roots the N2 after taking the Verizon OTA, but the bootloader remains locked. For me acquiring root again was great, because I use the Xposed framework a lot and many other apps that need root. As for the bootloader, I'm sure that sooner or later, one of the great devs will kick butt and get it unlocked. For those guys that challenge is like an itch.

Wouldn't bet on it. S4 and Note 3 are both locked and will likely remain that way. Never say never but the likelihood is slim.
You're right and honestly as long as I have, root I don't care much anymore. If it happens great, if it doesn't ok. Sooner or later we will upgrade to a new toy. Lol

This is the first method I tried...then I tried compiling my own auto root...and lastly I decompiled the entire rom and picked thru it piece by piece. If you read thru the posts about the new firmware you'll see the explanation of the work I'm doing and what I've found about Knox...I've even managed to reset the Knox warranty counter back to 00, but can't get it to stock up on reboots. I appreciate the the lookout, but between the 2 firmwares bmj2 and the newest one is Knox and efuse. That's literally all, so I don't really recommend the update until we can figure out more thorough ways around these.
I on BMJ2 so far I have the issue is about the internal stroge.... WiFi is OK..
If you have update to the latest version after rooting flash the original recovery to get working wifi...
I read from some other thread....
From note 2 they have the wifi fix...
How I Root this Rom whit Knox bootloader and appl:
(Warning:
We must take care.
If we flash something like recovery, root... the Knox Warranty Void turn to 0x1. This flag at 0x1 is not reversible.)
1- First of all I have a appl superuser.apk (SuperSU v1.80) on extSdCard. For now I prefer this version.
2- Flash by Odin the i9205-cwm-recovery.tar.md5. Reboot.
3- Power off. On recovery by Power + Vol-up I flash the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip from Chainfire. Thanks @Chainfire . Root but not Busybox.
4- After reboot the SuperSU stop sometimes, it is installed on system/app and Knox not permit all access at system.
5- Then, whit Explorer from Rom I go at extSdCard and touch on superuser.apk and install it. This way the apk is installed on data/app. Root solved.
6- Now we can touch on icon SuperSU, this start and ask us to invalidate Knox. We must say Yes.
7- Installed Busybox 1.21.1 of Stericson from Play Store (touch on icon to instal it). Verified whit "Root Verifier". It's all, we have all root now.
For me on some Rom's on + 3 Knox devices, no problem. Wifi Work well.
See THIS and THIS.
I have read it and my question is how can I upgrade CML1 without flashing the new bootloder, and modem and have all worked...

That was on first leaked Rom MJ5 to N7100, not official that had 4 files. In this case if we not include BL on Odin the bootloader is not flashed. I Tried this on one N7100 and this Flash deleted all my internal Sd Card. For me No more leaked Rom's. Are whit many bugs.
But the normal Roms have only one file whit 10 to 14 modules all included and we must see what are the bootloader. Must be from 3 to 6 files. I don't know witch are. You can't use this example not usual.

Agreed. ..The example mentioned above is about a leaked mj5 for att note 2...I also have the att note 2 i317 and it's suffering the same problem as the att note 3...Knox...The simple fact is no one has been able to break thru the Knox laced bootloader as the 1024 bit encryption is more than likely unbreakble...The thing is the official Roms come with new bootloader that has knox and selinux...knox has an enctyption that basiclaly encloses the kernel. This is the lockout you see when trying to odin back from ml2 to mj2 or another previous firmware. Since thr kernel is inside the knox protocol which is inside the bootloader were not only fighting the knox but the linux and bl. Its a mess to say the least. I am working on some workarounds but its taking time.
moral of the story...DO NOT DO THE UPDATE TO ML2...ALL I BRINGS IS KNOX AND SELINUX...no speed or performance updates.

You can root now and cancel the update, or let the update happen and follow the instructions in the NE9 update guide. The only thing that's missing in the guide is a link to Odin itself, so here it is for you. Odin is a utility for flashing Samsung firmware. Just make sure you follow the instructions given exactly.

I understand how the method works. It's like they can't root the latest kernel or something so revert back for root and come back. My point is if your final goal isn't just a rooted stock phone, there is almost no point in this ? Because since the phone doesn't have a looked bootloader you can just odin a recovery and flash a rom without rooting first

Kaos is right. I've been on LP since the notification hit my phone and rooted it the same hour then used this app and done. The only thing I want/need right now is a deodex ROM which should be out very soon.

You don't have to have service to root and device. However you to need service to use the data for the wifi tethering. I'm on the OTA OC5 and rooted with wifi tethering >>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/not.../app-one-click-hotspot-enabler-menus-t2816159 <<< This is a link that will turn on the tethering function.

You would have to root your device and then install the app in the first post of the link that has been posted. Please read the first page in it's entirety.

You would use Odin to flash and custom recovery(TWRP or Phils') if you have not already done so. Then you would use the custom recovery to flash a SU(Super user/Root) zip file and you would have a rooted device.
You don't need to use the 3.18 version of the app but you misread, "AT&T and T-Mobile Hotspot testing live(use v3.1.8 and report any issues please)", the dev just wants feedback from users on those carriers.
How to Root >>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2474222
TWRP >>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471564
Also read and read some more, nothing is worse when you don't know what you're doing but this is also a helpful community.

No, I don't think you understand. You use Odin to flash a custom recovery to a Samsung device or a stock image, bootloader, etc. Then you use the custom recovery to flash a ROM that is rooted or flash a SU zip that has the binaries and or some other goodies for root. However, this does require you to read, a lot, since there are several different version and updates for this phone. The link that has been provided is a download for an app that you would install after you have root, but before you tried to do any of this you should have read and read some more until you understood what you were doing. From the post that you have been placing in this thread you have not read any of the links I have and others have provided and don't know what steps you were trying to do, so I not sure if I can help.
The best thing to do is to use odin and flash a stock tar, but you have to read, read, read. You need to know what firmware version you had before doing this, if not you can mess the phone up bad.
I use "WiFi Tether Router". It's in the app store and it works great for me.
