[Q] In desperate need of help! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I totally jacked up my phone and I don't know what else to do. I have the Galaxy S3 tmobile (sgh-t999). I had rooted it over a year ago and everything was fine until today. I had used Odin and set up the clockworkmod... rom... thing. Of course now I doubt I even did that correctly, maybe I'm just in over my head...anywho...
I was trying to transfer some files from my pc to the phone. (kies air never worked for me) Well, I had plugged in my phone and in windows explorer it showed something along the lines of 'samsung mtp phone' when I opened it up only 2 folders showed... media and data. The data folder looked like the list of files/folders I would see when I'm in the file manager on the phone but everything listed were showing ad unknown file types. No option to open anything up. The media folder was the same but only listed my pictures and music.
Well, i had rebooted phone and computer, reinstalled usb drivers, same result. So I guessed that maybe my rom version was outdated or something. No luck on figuring out how to update, so I had the briliant (sarcasm) idea to try a different rom. Long story short on that mess, the new rom didn't improve anything with help of transferring files from pc. Then I decided maybe factory reset would fix the issue.
Here comes more ignorance on my part, apparently the new mod I put in was removed but the original stayed. Fine whatever. Here's where my phone it jacked up...
First off, I don't have my notification bar (I've checked in every setting menu, no avail)
I am also missing my web browser (tried downloading from play store which leads to next issue)
I cannot download anything from the play store, I click on install and nothing happens, no error message, nothing (I had attempted to download the .apk file for google chrome and move it onto my phone via memory card but when I click on it to install it says 'unable to find application to perform this action')
Now trust me, I have tried clearing cache, clearing data, app permissions, force stop, uninstall updates and I've done a factory reset 5 times. I apologize for the long post, but I just want to give all the info I can and hope to no end that I can get my phone functional again. What else can I do??

wow such a long letter
ok let me think about it
and tell about it soon as possible

Update....
I got the idea to flash the stock rom back onto the phone. After I flashed it and did another factory reset, I have been able to get my phone functional again. Everything is working fine. Even the phone doesn't know it had been rooted. Currently I am getting everything updated while it is still stock, I'll then just root it to get rid of the bloatware... no more tinkering.

I started with a new g tablet when I turned it on it wanted to do a update. I did not do the update from viewsonic. Then I loaded cwmod then then VEGAn-GE-7.0.0-RC1-Harmony-signed.zip. All went well start unit and I was able to goto and download from the market with no issues even downloade new flash from the market and worked very well. When I was useing it the market started to force shut down when I went to install app. it progessed to do force shutdowns.
So I did the proper sd partions reinstall vegan still same cant even get passed the google sign in in the begining. I then downloaded and load the tablet back to stock with cwmod when in the stock mode I did get force shutdown when I would mount the usb but that was the only time. Now I started over with cwmod then vegan still samething. Any thoughts would be great thanks.
update
I did some more reading and decided to do the fix priorites it seams to work so I did the google market fix deleating in maret and google then got the error rebooted now google market dose not open . I will have to do some reading on this. Any pointers
try this Settings>Applications>Manage>All> find Media Storage and then Clear Data... and reboot
update . So far so good I did a total restore useing NVFlash. Then when it booted up it wanted to do a ota update so I let it do it this time. I then reload vegan with all the clockworks then wiped data, cahe and fix priorites.
this works for me...happens once in a while...i'm surprised its not known more widely..many people seem to do a complete wipe to get ride of it
from another post:
I noticed at least two people in this thread have had this problem. The following worked for me... At one point I started getting this error also. Driving me crazy! Could not bring up the keyboard, and the message would pop like every 5 seconds. I searched and found this post (thanks and credit to KinkyMunkey):
process com.android.acore FC and how i fixed it
I didn't want to wipe data, so I tried it. I couldn't use ES File Explorer for this, but Root Explorer worked great!
The problem is a corrupt contacts sqlite database. As the referenced post says, you'll be able to tell if thats the problem when there is a .db-journal file in the folder. The folder is /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/ *Note* this is not the data folder in sdcard, but the data folder in root (/).
Just delete the databases folder in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts and restart. The contacts database will be rebuilt and re-synced.
This has worked for me twice (thank goodness). I don't know what causes the contacts DB to get messed up... it wasn't a drained battery for me.

Worked great! Thanks!
thanks gpzjack
It was a different database file for me but it solved it. The only thing is that a week later it happened again. This seems to fix it. But does anyone know the cause of the corruped database so we can stop it from happening?

[Q] Unlocking messed up my network.

I have Tmobile and it worked perfect before this. usually had full bars, etc.
after this i dont have anything.. just shows a x(0 bars.). went to apn and tried to fix it and nothing. reinstalled greyblur and nothing. did full wipe and nothing..
about 10 minutes later i got a couple facebook notifications. and saw i had 1 bar! i got excited and then it went back down to x... WTF. went to apn settings and such and it doesnt even show Tmobile network. only i can pick between 2 ATT networks. under signal settings or whatever it says im connected to ATT. I have noo clue what is going on.
Can someone help me please?? Would flashing the stock 1.83 help?? Thanks.

no, i did not. if you mean titanium back up then yes. i followed the instructions on briefmobile..
edit: how would that effect networks or whatever it did..?
wooooow.. xD i just pluged my phone into my computer while having motorola software update started and i have full bars now.. this is very weird.
I dont know if i should be happy or worried LOL
I think I'm having a similar issue. The network is working after unlocking but I can't add my Google account, so I'm locked out of the Android Market and Gmail etc..
I am getting the message "Can't establish reliable connection" when I try to add my Google account to the phone.
I have read that the only solution to this is to do a hard reset. If I have unlocked am I safe to do a hard reset?
My other thought was to re-root and restore the Titanium Backup I took before unlocking. Maybe the system settings I saved would fix it? However when I go reboot to Fastboot and try ADB shell it no longer finds my device (USB debugging is enabled and my drivers must be up to date if I rooted three days ago).
If the easiest thing to do is just hard reset I will do that I just need to know whether it is safe after unlocking. I feel like unlocking may have interfered with whatever the phone uses to communicate with servers but I have no clue if that is possible.
Edit: I was able to root again, had not realized ADB will not work from the fastboot screen. fastboot devices showed my phone. I got rooted, side loaded Titanium Backup and BusyBox. Now I am restoring my apps and settings, I will report back if the problem with signing into Google is resolved.

Titanium Backup Restore is done now but I am not out of the water yet. I have all of my applications back and in settings under Accounts I have all of my accounts listed now, but when I launch Android Market or Gmail both applications crash. I tried to add another Gmail account to the phone and when I click Next to begin logging in, I immediately get the "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server" screen, along with an error dialog saying Gmail has stopped unexpectedly.
I can't tell if this means I got further or am really in the same spot as before
So... can anyone answer the question of whether I am safe to do a hard reset after unlocking and rooting?

The problem I run into when using Titanium Backup, is that it restores the app and the data associated with the app, and the data caused force closes for the market (Play in my case) and other apps. Try clearing the cache for them. (From the home screen > Menu > Manage Applications > "App" > Clear Data)

I've honestly never tried it, but hard-reset appears to be the equivalent to wiping cache (and dalvik) and re-flashing. You might try wiping your cache and dalvik cache and flashing the ROM again. Trying a "factory" restore after modifying the factory data on your phone doesn't seem like it would work.

I did "Clear Data" for Gmail and Market (that is what it is called in my applications list, but the icon says Play).
Gmail is working again! The Market/Play app still gets to a white screen and says "Loading" with the whirly icon then goes away without any information. I see another item in the application list called Google Play Services, should I clear that data as well?

You shouldn't have to. If you're seeing a long loading screen, be patient. If it shows market in one spot and Google Play in another, it's probably trying to update.

I decided to try side-loading the Google Play Store since the market is no longer used. I got the apk from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1836057.
Now it loads but tells me Authentication is Required. Please sign in. I checked the accounts in the menu and my google account is selected, so I'm not sure what the problem is since Gmail is fine with the account now.

Where did you start in all this? Were you on a custom ROM and are now trying to get back to stock? Are you on stock and trying to unlock the bootloader or root? The direction you're going will help determine what you may or may not want to try next.

I am getting help from you in two separate posts it looks like so I will just consolidate to this thread, I apologize for posting all over the place just hoping to knock this out before the weekend is over.
I started with the official Gingerbread ROM from Motorola. I rooted, then unlocked, then rooted again.
My goal is to end up on an ICS ROM but I would like to get a good back up of the stock ROM first, so I want to knock this problem out, back it up, then flash to a custom ROM. You suggested going ahead and flashing the custom rom, I am just worried about making the problem worse by doing that.
The only problem I am noticing is that I cannot get into the Play Store, and I still get the Can't Establish Reliable connection message when trying to add a Google account. However, Gmail is working now but I can't add another account. I have connected to Wifi and I am still having the problem while connected.

If you side-loaded Google Play, try clearing any cache (App Data) for it as well. I don't know why your market/play is acting up if all you did was root > unlock > root. Assuming you have flashed CWM Recovery, you may end up having to get Google Apps (usually called gapps) and installing them as a zip to correct this. If so, here are the steps:
Get them from here or browse them all http://goo-inside.me/gapps/ and get the ones you want.
Load them onto the root directory of the phone's SD Card (not the internal memory).
Reboot into Recovery
Choose the option "Install Zip from SD Card" using the volume keys and the lock button
Scroll down to gapps-gb-tegra-20110118-signed.zip (or whichever one you got if you browsed them) and hit the lock button
Scroll down to whichever one says "Yes" in the midst of all the "No"s (I think that's how they're listed)
Reboot when the install is finished. It shouldn't take more than a minute or two.

I'm going to try the Gapps install, but I am having an issue flashing CWM apparently. I follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 but I am still not seeing Clockwork Mod Recovery. When I reboot, hold volume down, go to Android Recovery and press up, I still see the Android/Triangle/Exclamation point icon. Press volume down and up and see a blue menu with three or 4 options but none are Install from SD, so I am guessing I'm not successfully flashing CWM.
Edit: I did not delete the system/etc/install-recovery.sh file before flashing CWM. I am trying to do that then flash again, but ES File Explorer will not let me delete the file. My super user may need to be updated, but since I can't connect to the store it won't do it on its own.
I resolved the the issue with CWM thanks to Zestar in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423&page=16
I just have to reflash every time until I decide to go for the custom rom. I installed GAPPS from CWM Recovery but I am still having the same issue with being told i need to authenticate my account.
I got a ROM backup while in CWM as well so I think at this point I will just flash a custom rom and see where that gets me. Since I got a copy of the rom I should be able to return to this point in time anyways (could be wrong though )
Thanks for your help, I will report back once I have flashed to a new ROM and see what happens.
I didn't get this done before the weekend was up but got time tonight and flashed to the TopSmarts GingerBread ROM (it is really cool to me, a first time custom rom-er). I was able to get set up on e-mail (don't have a Gmail app loaded yet) but Play Store - which I had to side load - is crashing when I try to add an account still.
I flashed the Gapps from above after flashing the new ROM but none of them showed up when the phone booted into the rom for the first time. Do I need to do something other than install from CWM?
Edit: I flashed the Gapps from TopSmarts and rebooted and was able to get Play Store running. It had a minor hiccup and repeated the sign in process a few times but now it is updating my apps. I am happy with the world again, thank you for your help.

Glad you got it working. I've never seen the TopSmarts ROM as I am also very new to the custom ROM world. I flashed CyanogenMod 7 Nightly (I didn't know Nightly versions were beta until after I flashed it), and I love it! It took me a couple of tries to get the gapps working too, but once they worked, I haven't really had a problem since.

Crash loop due to stuck text-to-speech download

Hello,
I'm trying to get an Alcatel Idol X (One Touch 6040D, no custom roms or modifications) out of a crash loop, but have been unsuccessful so far. The trouble started when the phone wanted to download and install text-to-speech voice data ("Female for English"). At some point this download/install crashes, causing the phone to reboot. When rebooting the phone hangs on the Alcatel screen with white background. I have to power it off then on again. Then it boots and starts the download/installation again, causing it to crash seconds after.
I've tried the following to no avail:
Clear cache partition from recovery menu.
Force stopping "Download Manager" and clearing cache & data. I have to be very quick to do this, otherwise the phone reboots. Unfortunately clicking the clear buttons has no effect. The used disk space stays the same (80.00KB data, 12.00KB cache). The phone will not reboot at this point, but many apps (Google Play, Settings,...) and processes are crashing repeatedly (android.process.acore, android.process.media and com.google.process.gapps). Eventually, so much has stopped working that the phone reboots.
There's a thread, I found almost a month ago on Androidcentral, about this very same problem. But what worked for the thread starter and other people, i.e. the clearing of cache and data of the "Download Manager" doesn't work for me. Probably because the cache/data clearing is not actually executed. So that might be something to look into further. See point two above. My replies in that thread haven't been responded too, unfortunately.
I'm aware that the cleanest solution is probably a factory reset from the recovery menu. However that would mean data loss of photos and app data, that haven't been backed up. My main goal is to get the phone into a state that a recovery/syncing of that data can be done. After, I don't mind doing a factory reset.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Kind regards,
eXistenZ_69
P.S.: post copied from here as per recommendation of XDA Assistant
Hello,
this problem still could not be resolved unfortunately Does anybody have any idea why the "clean cache" doesn't appear to have any effect?
Cheers,
eXistenZ_69
Not too familiar with Alcatel as they aren't popular around where I live... I would think that there's an option to wipe cache in recovery however. If that doesn't help, I would try to quickly toggle airplane mode to stop the download process so you can backup what you need.
Hello es0tericcha0s,
thanks for your reply. The problem seems not to be related to Alcatel specifically. See Google Text-to-Speech Won't Stop Downloading for other brands of Android smartphones that had the same issue. Unfortunately, what helped others, i.e. clearing the cache, does absolutely nothing in my case I also already tried clearing the cache partition in the recovery menu. Disabling wifi is another thing I tried to no avail. The download manager still starts installing or trying to download the voice data and crashes. Any other suggestions?
Cheers,
eXistenZ_69
Are you rooted by any chance? What's going on with the Download Manager shouldn't affect your ability to backup your photos at least when you plug it into a computer. If you aren't rooted, you might look into trying to do an adb backup if your phone supports it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091047&highlight=4+4
No, the phone is not rooted. Never did any modifications of that sort.
I tried connecting to the pc before, but it's not possible to browse the phone content. The crashing services I mentioned in my first post are probably interfering. I will try it again on another pc... Will an adb backup work in that case? Or is it possible to do an adb backup without booting android fully?
Cheers,
eXistenZ_69
So I tried again plugging the phone into a computer. The computer plays the connection sound and shows the phone when clicking on the "Safely disconnect USB device" in the task bar, but unfortunately it's not possible to browse the phone contents using the file explorer :crying: There is a slowly moving progress bar shown in the file explorer location bar and eventually it just stops and nothing happens.
I couldn't try the ADB backup tool in the thread you suggested cause the site is down. It most likely won't work anyway given the fact that the USB connection cannot be established successfully.
*sigh* I'm starting to think I'm out of options. It's just so frustrating to know that the images and contact data are present on the device, but there is no practical way to get to them. I could do a reset to factory settings and hope to recover any images using a tool like Recuva, but that would definitely endanger them.
eXistenZ_69
Only other thing I could think of would be to root and hopefully you could freeze/disable the Download Manager in time before the crash to be able to recover stuff.
Adb still might work even though MTP isn't. Just have to hurry through the settings to enable it. If you don't have adb on your computer search : Minimal ADB and Fastboot here on xda.
Hello es0tericcha0s,
Today I had a major breakthrough. Using ADB I successfully copied over the /sdcard directory contents on the phone. This means all pictures have been recovered!! So happy about that Thank you so much for your help! :highfive: It didn't work right away after installing minimal adb & fastboot though, my phone was not listed when doing "adb devices". I then installed some software from Alcatel called "One Touch Center", which is used for managing phonebook, sms, ringtones, etc... that was not able to connect to the phone either. However I think it installed some driver, because after ADB was able to connect to the phone :good:
I'm currently trying to figure out how to root the phone so I can delete the download manager cache/data. From what I've read by now is that those should be present somewhere under /data/data/ . Those directories require root privileges unfortunately. I tried Kingo Root which lists the phone as supported, but that failed to acquire root.
Would be great to succeed in fixing the crash loop too, so I can sync contacts and other data too.
Thanks again!
Cheers,
eXistenZ_69

Can I make changes in my phone's internal storage from my pc?

I successfully rooted my LG Tribute. Phone worked just fine (Didn't have service at the time. Just using it like an IPod). Downloaded another "management program" to make deleting apps, etc. easier. Problem. Settings had stopped. Couldn't get it to function. Everything else functioned, but not settings. So, since it's not my only smart phone and if I wrecked it, it wouldn't matter, I copied all files to my PC and did a factory reset. The little green robot erased everything, but when it came time to reinstall the program the reinstall message just blinked and the message "unfortunately settings has stopped" popped up. Naturally I tried at least a million times to repeat the factory reset, but with no success. I can pull down the top of the screen and see the information there, but I can't get behind the "unfortunately settings has stopped" message. I admit I'm a very old guy who fantasizes about becoming a hacker, but that's never going to happen. But I'm wondering, is there a little utility type program somewhere that I could download to my PC and run it in my phone via USB to get behind the '"unfortunately" message and do some kind of wipe job that would enable the do the factory reset? Like getting into the registry on a PC? Everyone I talk to says to just dump the phone. But I'd like to figure out a solution, if there is one, and learn something.

Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70 - I think I bricked my tablet?

Hello all! I registered real quick in hopes this community could help me out with something.
So quite a while ago I rooted my Lenovo Tab 2A 10-70 tablet with KingoRoot in order to generate a logcat file. That went fine and dandy, and then I disabled some misc. apps (like Kindle for Android). I can't remember exactly what I messed with, so please bear with me.
The issue is that a couple of days ago I tried taking an image with my tablet with the default Camera app, when suddenly it started giving me some errors with generating thumbnails. Worse yet, my computer could not open these and they were seemingly corrupted. The camera started acting up as well, and claimed that "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped working." whenever I attemted to record. I tried clearing the cache based on some recommendations through others and force stopping the app, and this seemingly worked for one recording/picture, but then would stop again. I found deleting the DCIM folder entirely from my Android's Internal Storage helped, but it'd quickly corrupt again.
Frustrated, I asked a friend for help on what to do figuring he had more knowledge in Android devices then me. He suggested I tried another camera app, but I couldn't get Google Play to download anything to the internal storage or my SD card, despite clearly having enough space.
As a last resort, I tried updating through the official "Updates" app to see if that would help me, and it claimed there was a new ROM available. I tried that, but then suddenly it failed and now my tablet seems to bricked? I can now only get the "No command." screen to show up.
I've tried using the following options while on this screen:
- reboot system now - this takes me back to this menu after it shows a Lenovo screen twice, which makes me think it's having trouble booting into Android itself.
- Apply update from ADB/sdcard - Both did nothing for fairly good reason, but I checked these options out of curiosity.
- wipe data/factory reset - Tried these the very first time I got to this screen after a failed installation. It seemingly hasn't worked for me.
- wipe cache partition - Tried this a bit later, but got similar results.
- root integrity check - Scanned a bunch of .apk files, but then later threw up some errors after that was done and said the check failed.
So, in short, I'm stuck in this menu and I'm getting kind of frustrated/scared. Is there anything that I can do to save the tablet at this point? Is there something I did wrong that might have bricked it? I'm not terribly experienced with Android, so I'd love to hear some thoughts from others! I'll gladly take anyway to restore the tablet back to a point where it can actually boot into the OS, and I understand I'd lose some data doing any sort of clean install.
Thank you!

Thank you!

Quite a late reply, but thank you! That ended up working quite nicely! I upgraded my tablet from Lollipop to Kitkat too, which seems to be working a bit better app performance wise for me.
