CAN th New 4.09.605.5 OTA update still be unlocked&rooted ? - HTC Droid DNA

the title says it all ?
My friend has one that just took the update.... can I root and unlock the bootloader ?
Thanks !

I would like to know this as well. Apparently my desire to root came just a bit too late. Anyone have any info?

Everyone spam beups and other devs with requests for an unlock method that is also free.

Yes, spamming is how you spur these guys along :lame:

Is a way to show interest

Like I have said before. Until the newer models block the temp root exploit, they will most likely not burn another exploit for this old of a phone. When the Vzw m7 had a fix the m8 didn't get yet, jcase said himself, he will not burn an exploit on one model. Wait until more models patch the exploit and I am sure they will get another exploit made.
TL/DR? Wait until more phones get this fix on them. Telling them once is okay... Spamming them will most likely not motivate them on making another exploit.

Jcase already found a new method and it's gona be in 3.0 sunshine

Gingerbreak?

OK.... Since I'm newly registered I can't post this in development, but I do have a question regarding gingerbreak. Will this exploit give us root access? I would try it, but when I tried it out on my Epic, things began to break on my phone and it would have issues. I have been following the root info on this phone, but i haven't noticed anything about anyone trying gingerbreak. From my understandings, this was an exploit to work with all gingerbread devices. Thanks guys/gals for your help
Has been tested, doesn't work.
Please don't flame this guy. Let the thread die.

The emmc is write pritected, and if I'm not mistaken that hole has been patched.

A for effort and throwing the idea out there. Sadly all known exploits were patched but hopefully we'll get lucky in the upcoming weeks.
Welcome to XDA may your time here be as flameless as possible

Wow. I'm proud of everyone on here for not flaming this guy. Seems everyone is finally growing up. Either way apparently S-Off and Perm Root have already been achieved, but have not yet been released to the masses. No idea is a bad idea.

Rooting with Kingo

So.. I started seeing concerns pop up about Kingo installing Chinese backdoors into phones and PCs..
Has anyone else heard this? can this be confirmed?
I feel I should wait and see where this goes.
Would love to hear what you all think...
I have the same feeling.. I've finialy got around to the site... and it looks legit. ...even the most popular root tool was retired because of (supposed effortless application of the root tool)the dev saying the kingo was easier.
but i wonder too what is the fine print if any.. let's start the conversation.... Although this might be the wrong section.
It is the wrong section. Belongs in Q&A
Hey guys check this out. I emailed them and told them they should make a bootloader unlocker too, and they emailed me back and said.
Makes me rethink my decision to get the Developer Edition. Maybe they can unlock the bootloader!

No. Don't do it. Could lose root forever.

I saw a tweet from @teamandIRC aka Justin Case about this root method being suspect. When it comes to exploits and phone security,I really trust that guy. I'd hold off on using anything from Klingo until it is investigated further. Just my 2 cents...

At this point, XDA staff has decided to remove all links to both Kingo and vRoot methods of rooting. Proceed at your own peril.

Can we know what changed? I saw it was open then locked till they provided some code then it was reopened but then I saw there was concern over the code that they gave XDA being incomplete. Is that the reason or something else. Since Design closed his thread this was the only one available so just curious since I was gonna take the update then reroot. Thanks.

I too am curious about the "about face".
Be aware that as of this moment XDA has deemed the Kingo root method and Vroot method are not allowed on XDA. There are concerns with the information which is collected during the root method by the exploit. It is not about a continuous malware which may affect your device but about important information shared about your device, serial numbers etc during the root process which could be huge securities issues.
You have all been warned
Have a great day!

So, if we've already used this method. How can we go back to stock unrooted safely or has the damage already been done?? Id like to do that and then root via de la vega.

I've moved this to Q and A since it is actually a question and not original development obviously... XDA is not doing a reversal at all... the said systems had yet to have a verified developer/s look at them. Now there has been. It seems that this is a VERY unsecure method of root and can open up your pc and phone to well, nasty stuff... the root files come from china... but for those of you who want to play with fire... be my guest...
This is just me thinking out loud...
Personally, I think I would be more worried about the NSA gaining access to our phones. J/K
In all seriousness, I am curious if there is any real evidence that points to anything underhanded happening when using the Kingoapp method or is this just stating that the possibility exists and it is unknown? And, if the makers of Kingoapp wanted to assure us that nothing hinky is going on, what would they have to do to prove it to the XDA community?
I think these are fair questions as human nature in general tends to turn supposition into fact in the blink of an eye so it would nice to know the real facts before anyone starts casting dispersions on them just because the root files are from China.
I do understand the precaution of removing any Kingoapp links in XDA in the meantime. :good:

Kingoapp posted a response to all of the accusations made about their app on their facebook page.
So it seems that what everyone is all worked up about is that part of the information that it gathers from your phone to identify it so that the proper scripts can be downloaded is the IMEI # on the phone. The folks at Kingoapp agree that, that tidbit of information isn't necessary in the identification process and their next version will remove that "requirement." They also explain that they do use "free" servers to store some of their scrips to cut down on the traffic on their servers and the related data download costs. They will also release a version down the road that will include all of the scripts when the app is downloaded to your PC so that during the rooting process, there is no need for the app to communicate with other servers.
As I suspected, people have gone off half-cocked claiming malware is installed on the phone/PC, etc. Someone even posted that XDA said that Kingoapp installed malware (which XDA did not say!) on Kingoapps facebook page.
I wish people would realize that baseless accusations and rumors hurt the cause and could cause companies like Kingoapp, that are providing a free way to root your phone without tripping Knox in one step, to stop development and remove their work from the market.

Great news, and agreed. I've been waiting for things to calm down. I want Kingoapp and root. Seems the best for the time. Not ready to root, yet, but I will and I hope Kingoapp has the update by then.
I wonder how many people have downloaded, without a second thought, root apps, or themes.....and even non root. Guess where a LOT of those are written? Just sayin.

whats the deal with vroot is it safe?

I've been thinking of using vroot and have read many have already used it with no problem but is it safe ? Is xda going to release this exploit safely without the possible backdoor to china?

Not sure. I believe some of the devs are trying to pick it apart and figure out what it is communicating. Some feel it is safe, others do not. I'm not sure what xda review process is for stuff like this, but they have some pretty talented folks on staff if they have banned the links I would trust their judgement for now until proven otherwise.

yea I have and some say its safe but other say its the devil but its confirmed working thats for sure. I want root but infecting my pc and phone to get it is hardly worth it. I figured it was fair question to ask to see what others thought outside the thread after all this is Q&A:laugh:
from what i have read, no one has found anything malicious or dangerous, just a lot of things that are suspect.
personally, i would just wait until the devs find another root method just to be sure. it isn't worth it imo...
Since vRoot is apparently used to root 3500 different devices (are there really that many?) I would assume that the IMEI is used to identify the device being rooted so rooting can be carried out properly. This is completely my guess since I don't know anything about any of it.
I just used it and rooted. It was a pain in the butt but successful. It's a very simple process also.

Same here. I know that some devs have the device and are working on it, but the devs I've come to know from other devices seem to have jumped to another carrier or have other phones they are working on.

Sounds promising to say the least. I can not wait for root to get my Viper4Android working again!!!
Its my understanding that jcase's root is a much broader root than just our phone and that is part of the reason he is holding off (In addition to family issues and other obligations). He would rather wait a month or so and then release the root which can be used on potentially a bunch of phones than release it now and have it work on Sprint's G3 and let the other manufacturers patch it before they release.
Sucks for us but I understand.. hopefully someone else releases something if not I think jcase will still hook us up but he wants the most bang for the buck.. rooting a bunch of phones.. (No, not money, although he would probably get some of that too.)

I don't see the need in a "broader" root. Every other LG G3 variation already has root as I understand it. Reading between the lines, I believe that jcase has a specialty in mobile security exploits and already has one in mind for the Sprint G3. He just hasn't had time to explore it further, because he's a busy guy and has had some family illness issues. It sounds like he plans to try and finalize it in a couple of weeks.

By broader I mean it can potentially root a bunch of other phones. No point in releasing it just for Sprint's G3 when he could wait and potentially help a lot more people. Not just LG G3 phones, other manufacturers as well.. so its probably not something specific to LG or Sprint but Android as a whole. Yes, he is a mobile security expert. Its my understanding he is currently in Las Vegas teaching people about how to exploit Android devices.

Its not a bootloader unlock exploit, lol.... its a Trust Zone access exploit. It does effect the S4 but doesn't automatically unlock the bootloader and its yet to be seen if it adds any ability that will allow for an unlocked bootloader.
There are like 4 threads about this on the first page of this forum...

It will not work with Samsung or LG bootloaders as they have other security measures in place. This has been confirmed by Dan Rosenberg himself, jcase, and several other members of the community. All it offers us S4 users is a chance for the devs to learn more about how TrustZone works on the device.
