This is now happening on my replacement phone! I got the first phone replaced because it wasn't charging but now it's happening again on the replacement. It seems to only happen when the battery gets to 20% or lower. When it does this, it doesn't matter if it is USB or wall charging. I have been able to get the new phone to charge now twice by rebooting - one time it took three reboots. The first time it happened on my first phone the battery widget stuck on 50% and I didn't get the low battery warning and the battery went to 0 before I knew it and it took forever to begin charging again. I've been on different battery modes when it happens, so that isn't causing it.
I've mentioned this on a couple other threads and there's been others that responded it happened to them, so I thought I'd start a thread on this in case Motorola is monitoring this forum (they better be). Anyone else chime in here so we can get a feel for how widespread this may be.
Just let mine go down to 20 plugged up and its charging but im only on day one

Have you tried doing a hard reset and letting the phone sit for 20 minutes. It could be some kind of bug. I know mine had some force closes on the first day. I did a hard reset from recovery and let the phone sit at first boot. Then did a reboot and have had no problems since.

I did a factory reset on the first phone and that didn't change this problem.
I haven't seen this problem on my phone. Best thing to do is report it to the Motorola forums and have them look at it especially if many others are experiencing the same issue.
In the mean time, you possibly could have another bad unit. Not sure why it would not charge when the battery hits 20% or lower. Also what battery widget are you using?

Good idea on the Moto forums. I have tried Battery Monitor widget, Circle Battery widget and Battery Notifier (big text) widget. No one widget was in use or installed for every instance I had a battery charge problem, but I guess it may be more than one widget with potential interferences. Has anyone else been using any of these widgets and not experienced this problem?

What battery widgets etc have you installed? Sounds like a compatability issue with something that was installed. Try using the phone completely stock with no custom widgets installed. If you can get the phone back to stock out of box condition that would be the best way to troubleshoot this problem. I doubt it's another bad phone.

I agree it's not a bad phone, but some bug either in the phone or installed app/widget. I'd like to know what battery widgets people are using that haven't had this issue so I know what's safe.
Not exactly related to battery widgets but i have noticed that Estrong's, Astro and File Expert file managers do not work correctly on my Photon. They don't show the full capacity of my 16gb sd card and they also don't show all the files in my download folder. So I'm thinking theirs going to be more incompatability issues with this phone until app developers get some updates rolled out for this phone.
As for battery widgets, i don't use them. I use the stock battery ifo that is included with the Photon. Sorry I can't give any help with that. but I'm pretty sure the widgets in the Android Market will not be fully compatible with the Photon. Uninstall everything you installed from the market and use your phone for a day or so and see how it acts.

Its been charging for about 4 hours today and went from 20% to 30% and its hot, really hot.
I've had it since day one and seems to match what the OP is saying about once it goes below 20-30% it has a hard time charging but like i mentioned before, mine gets toasty when its failing at charging.
Also had an issue while streaming from google music beta, went from 100 to 20% in <2 hours and once again it was hot as the devil's **** then it wouldn't charge.

I did fail to mention that each time I did notice the back of the phone was pretty warm but not what I'd consider real hot. The third time this happened (on second phone), I cooled it down to room temperature and it still wouldn't charge.

Well it got hotter the my evo 4g ever did after flashing many roms and kernels and what not and even hotter the my pre minus when simultaneously charging and tethering. Havent had a phone get that hot before, i'll try to get a temp reading when it happens again.
Just pulled the battery little while ago and it started charging again. Seems to be hit or miss with the restarts and battery pulls the get the thing going.
I havent tried just turning it off and letting it charge past 30% yet, to see if it only does it when it on vs. when it off.
It's happened again. I was running speedtest.net repeatedly to test my radios and my battery temp climbed up to 118F. I checked if the phone would charge periodically and it did until the battery got less than 30%. It seems to be this combination that causes the malfunction. I rebooted and it charged fine, but the temp also fell to 115F, so I don't know if it was the reboot or lower temp, but at least now I know how to get it to recharge and not run th and it always charged, battery down to 0.
I tried to make this happen the other night by running quadrant repeatedly, but temps never went above 115. It always charged that night, so 115-118 is the magic number together with <30% battery.
BTW - our radios may kickass, but they also generate a lot of heat, so be on the alert to high battery temps when hitting the radios hard.
My first Photon had the problem where the battery went from 50% to DEAD immediately. I remember one time the phone was red hot to the touch right before it died, it was just idling. It wouldn't accept charge until I removed and replaced the battery.
My replacement Photon doesn't have the problem (yet) or any of the first Photon's problems. I am convinced there is a bad batch of Photons out there.
Unfortunately I'm on my second photon. I exchanged the first for this reason.
Do any of you happen to use a case with a magnet in it? I've only had this happen twice and both times it was in a case. Now it doesn't happen.

I am using the black Sprint case, but there's no magnet in it. I do think the case may aggrevate the heat buildup so if I hit it hard again and feel it getting warm, I'll be sure to remove the case.

This theory just got shot down. I hooked up the USB charging cable at 62% and 84F and it wouldn't charge. The phone recognized the connection and displayed the message it was in charge mode, but the battery in the notification bar didn't show it was charging nor did battery monitor widget. I then connected it to the OEM wall charger and cable and nothing. I rebooted and no change. I shutdown the phone and hooked it up to AC and it went into charge mode. I then booted and it's going into charge mode as it should. I'm back to square one again.

That doesn't matter, you have every right to exchange it 283892 times until you get one that works. within the 30 days, It is in our contract. Not sure why people don't understand this. It doesn't matter where you get it, what store you get it from, Sprint, Best Buy, Radio ****, bob's electronics supply..you can get it exchanged. Personally, I wouldn't have even hesitated nor made this post, I would have just exchanged it.
Then made this post to say what happened to a photon I used to have. lol
EDIT: People need to speak up and let companies understand that you just won't settle. I come across customers everyday that just settle. I work for Comcast, talk to customers daily about things. I get, oh yea and then our internet sucks, and this doesn't work and oh yea this broke and we don't get this channel but we pay for it. My first question is, "Did you call?"....their answer, "Call who?"..or just "No". LOL I'm like, how the hell do you think stuff will get fixed if no one knows you have any problems? haha
You are the consumer, you have a lot of rights to the product you paid money for.
This is a great phone, but like all electronics some stores might get a bad shipment, it happens.

so every once in a while, i'd say every 4 or 5 days... i'll take my phone off the charger and start my day like normal. but on these days, (sometimes i notice and do a hard reset before all this happens) the upper half of the phone will get really warm and even if i do absolutely nothing on my phone, my battery will drain from full to dead in 3-4 hours.
has anyone else noticed this? i'm thinking it may be some sort of cpu cycle leak or some sort of infinite loop some background driver might get itself into.
its pretty annoying if i dont catch it right away and an hour after i unplug my phone while i'm at work to take my phone out of my pocket and have it over half battery gone already.

I have noticed the 'staying warm after charging sometimes' phenomenon....I also sometimes leave it charging all night but it doesn't seem to charge, even though the light is on. I think this is somehow connected to the wonky power button behavior...I get a green light on full charge sometime....i've never seen it turned green while powered off.....sometimes it won't turn on while plugged in, sometimes I need to do a battery pull, sometimes the SD card too, sometimes I need to press the power button a million times or hold it extra extra long....sometimes the charging light doesn't come on and it does charge, sometimes the light comes on and it doesn't...sometimes it gets really hot after charging and doesn't cool down after sitting idle....I usually just shut it off for a minute and turn it back on...somehow.
This is definitely one of my pet peeves with this phone...I also think this is linked to some phones never turning back on again, corrupted bootloader/recovery after a 'fastboot' shut-down or hot restart...
I'm diggin' the phone, don't get me wrong, but....I can't wait for the nPrime...
yeah, but it's less so the problem of it getting warm (pre or post charging) and moreso that it will start heating up a lot and you can tell that something is running the battery down in the background, the only way to stop this is to do a battery pull restart.
has anyone had similar issues with their phone going from full battery to dead in a few hours because of a hidden bugged process or something similar?

This happened to me this morning, first time and it was very weird. I've left it charging overnight per usual and this morning when I woke up and unplugged it, it had only 10% battery left. I tried charging it in my car on my way to work and have it plugged in to my computer USB now. I disabled a bunch of stuff as shown on this thread:

I did however just update to showdown rom and had setcpu on 1.7 conservative. It still should have charged but I'm guessing a stuck process/bug drew all the power last night.

I just got this phone yesterday and it did it twice yesterday while in my pocket and twice today. Just recently I had an incoming call (phone was in vibrate mode) and about 10 seconds after it started vibrating right as I was about to answer the call the phone shut itself down. Completely.
I had to long hold the power button to completely boot the phone back up.
I'm on rooted stock OTA 2.3.6 but it was happening before the update. Anyone else have this problem?

Nope - I suggest taking it to the AT&T store for an exchange.
Check to see if there is some movement of the battery. I read here or another forum when I was searching regarding random shutdowns and thing that seemed to be similar was that the battery did not fit very tight and could move slightly and cause a reboot.
Simple fix is to insert some paper between the battery and the case to keep it tighter in place (opposite end of the battery from the contacts). No reboots for me since I did that earlier this week.

If the battery is that loose, the device is probably defective.
i went to radio shack where i bought it from yesterday and after a bit of a struggle i managed to get them to exchange it for a brand new one.
i also read about the loose battery connection but i felt that if that were the case i do not want to spend the next 2 years or so (i hold onto my tech for as long as possible) dealing with wedging things behind the battery.
i'll update if the new s2 i got has this same problem

I figured it was SetCPU (having the CPU at .2Ghz min/ondemand and 1.6 max)

Overclocking/undervolting always carry a risk of the phone crashing or hanging.
I've recently started having this issues. It's not a battery loose issue and I do not OC / UV my CPU. Started about 3 weeks ago and has happened 4 - 5 times intermittently. Its a "sleep death" issue where the phone goes to sleep and doesn't turn back on until you manually boot it by holding the power button down for about 10 - 15 seconds. For now AT&T is sending me a new battery. This is a possible cause because with investigating this issue, I have been checking my battery stats every day by typing *#0228# and having it do a quick start. The battery percentage will always drop by 5 - 40% after the quick start, but will increase about 3 - 5% within approximately 5 minutes.

It's a known issue that if the fuel gauge is reset when the battery is at a lower state of charge, it'll get thrown off and report lower than usual for a bit until it stabilizes.
I think what happens is if you do a reboot, the fuel gauge is assuming a "relaxed" battery when in reality the battery is at high load due to the boot process. So the fuel gauge thinks it's lower than it really is.
Google Maxim MAX17040 - while we have a 17042 with a few extra features, it's VERY similar in operation to the '40.
Piece of cake. Although the replacement is a bit lower MhA it's a lot better than the old battery

At first I wondered about this being a smaller battery if it would run down fast. It doesn't !!! Works very well !!!

That could be a bad/shorted battery. Mine is still going strong! I would try and reverse everything and start over. When I did mine my vol controls didn't work. Didn't have the connector snapped down good enough

I am still trying to see if there is a setting that somehow caused my NT to freak out when the battery reaches 23%
But I have this bad feeling I will need to purchase a new battery. By the way, if the nook just shuts off watch the screen closely it usually says "battery too low" for a second before switching off. And if that is the case after plugging it in, you likely have a bad one and I would call the company to get a replacement.
I have been looking around and the only new replacement batteries I find are the two mentioned and both are 3200mh rather than 4000 of the original. How is your battery life since you changed it? Seems like it should be 1/4th what we had when new (or close to it). Or don't you really notice at this point? I have thought about ebay but then they are used batteries and you have no idea how many cycles are left, and likely hold 1/4th less anyway due to their age. *shurgs* not sure which way to go. As of now I am still having a "freak out" situation at about 23% (roughly). If it doesn't get any worse I can live with that, but from what I have read it will only get worse. :/
Anyone know of a battery app I could use to "adjust" the shut down threashold? I have one that will alert me to whatever I set so if I am not watching it will warn me so that will work if I don't have one that will actually shut it down. I know the "calibrating" apps don't do anything except delete the one file that is only usage stats from the last time it was plugged in, so I don't think there is a real way to calibrate it.

And on another note with the "spare parts" app the 'battery history' option errors with "the application spare parts ) process.com.andriod.spare_parts_ has topped unexpectedly, please try again." Is this normal? It is version 2.3.7. NT Hidden Settings app application settings/battery use works fine and shows the amount of everything that has used the battery since it was last plugged in/charged. Could this error be a sign of the problem with the phantom touches and inaccurate battery display? And if it is a sign of something broken, what and how do I fix it?
I received a replacement battery and it is doing the same thing, so somehow during the battery switch something got wonkey with my nook. It charges OK just powers off to do it. Since it's used by my kids now it's not essential to be on while charging, but I'd still like to figure this out.

Which battery did you get? And very strange it shuts off when you plug it in. Never seen or heard of that before. It should boot up if off. Or do you mean the screen goes off/goes to sleep but not full shut down when you plug it in? If it is going to sleep, that is likely a app or setting that is doing it. Not sure which but you might want to check any battery apps you have or your settings. It would also depend on which ROM you are running, stock (which I am running) or something else.

It will not boot up until I unplug the USB from a power source, although it will fully charge while it is plugged in. I've never seen anything like this and I've been messing with android since my original moto droid 1.

Very strange indeed. The only thing I would say to do is turn the USB debugging on and off a few times, to see if that makes a difference. It shouldn't but if you tried two different brands of battery, sounds like it is the hardware on the nook. But that is one really weird bug.
Something interesting I discovered. While I did get a new battery, I decided to do some experimenting. Researching this issue a lot of people said you need to delete the "battery file". There even use to be a option in CWM to remove this file. The thing is the file is deleted every time you plug in the device. So that is not going to help.
Further digging found that some devices you need to plug them in and let them charge. Or run them down for say 20-30 minutes without sleeping then plug in and let it charge fully. For some devices this "resets" the battery management system.
What I found in my tests is the battery gets harder to charge with age. While the little n light might show green, it is likely only 80% charge sometimes 90%. And it takes awhile for it to really get to 100%. What I did was let it charge up to that full 100% which may take hours. I got a nice battery app that alerts me when it gets below 25% after that things can get crazy with phantom touches. I also have it set to give a audio alert when it reaches 100%, this way I know when it is fully charged.
I know the charge it fully (when it actually says 100% and I get a audio alert when this happens) before 50% or so has helped a lot. At one point the phantom touches started to happen at higher than 25% reaching almost 35%, last time I did a test to see when phantom touches started was 17% so it is much better. Not to the level when I bought the device, but still very useable.
I will put in the new battery sometime I am sure as it is taking longer and longer to reach the full 100% (but that is normal for lithium ion batteries.) it is certainly useable in this state and the phantom touch issue is not getting worse. I think the biggest issue was charging it until the n light went green and as the battery ages, the battery manger gets thrown off for some reason and charging to the true 100% helps recalibrate it.
Therefore I would run it for 20 minutes without letting it go to sleep, then charge until it is really full (usually leave it plugged in overnight and that should do it). Do this a few times and see if the battery is better.
Oh another thing I did. Power it off fully (hold down power button then tap shutoff) then plug it in to charge. Let the charger wake, reboot, and charge the device. This I also think helps recalibrate the system. Although I never did it when I ran it for 20 minutes then charged to full. But I am sure powering off then plugging in to charge at times made a difference as well.
I've just bought one of these batteries, hoping it'll be better than my old one.
It should be. It won't be quite as it was when it was new, as these new batteries don't have the capacity compared to the originals that B&N installed (perhaps a hour or two less runtime compared to the originals). But it will be better than a well used Nook Tablet battery that is fading fast.
I don't know if I need a new battery just yet, but I am experiencing the issue of the power being killed when plugging the Nook into the wall or USB (which means transfers over an SD card, which is a pain). I only spent $5 to get it and I can see why someone might have thought it was broken, since they probably plugged it in to charge it but it wouldn't turn on while plugged in. It does charge while off, however.
What I've noticed in my experience is that if I turn it on, I can plug it in while the Nook is on the N screen, and then it'll go to the Cynoboot screen still plugged in, but the second it goes to boot the OS it turns off.
Anyone have any ideas on why it would allow itself to be on until it tries to boot to the OS?
Hi people, nexus 6P owner since 2 years now. I remember when I received the phone I could reach without worries 5 to 6 hours of Screen but then, after nougat and now Oreo, I've never achieved again that numbers.
After rooting my phone, flashing carbon rom and installing elemental X kernel, I played with governor profiles and improved my SOT a little over this year but it was getting worser and worser by every day (2 to 3 hours of screen on time and heavy idle drain). Finally, the real problem came the other day when for the first time my phone shutdown at 29% suddenly after opening the camera.
So I read internet and found in the nexus 6 (not 6P) forums that someone suggested a solution concerning a problem with how the phone meter the battery remaining, suggesting doing a series of steps of charge discharge that I will list here. This, and changing to ABC rom may have done the trick, as now I'm getting much more normal battery life (considering the degradation of 2 years, 2700mah left approximately) of 4, 4 and a half hours (yours will be better) SoT and an idle drain of less than 0,5% per hour, and apparently it didn't shutdown early anymore.
So, give this steps a try if you tried everything like I did and you still having problems with battery drain.
STEPS THAT MAY SOLVE EARLY SHUTDOWN PROBLEM:
- Charge your phone to 100% and use it until it shutdowns (look at what percentage).
- Boot to recovery by pressing power and vol - button, and once in there let it drain the battery until it shutdowns by itself (may take a lot of time so increase brightness to maximum in the recovery menu under settings to consume it faster).
- Now it has really reached 0% and if you try to power it on it won't let you by blinking red in the notification led.
- Plug the charger and leave the phone off until the battery indicator show it's full.
- Unplug it and turn it on, it should show you the battery at less than 100%, like 95%, 90% or even less depending on how bad it was calibrated (mine showed 95%).
- Plug it to the charger without turning it off until reaching 100% and only then unplug it first and then turn it off quickly.
- Plug it one more time (off) until the icon shows it is full and then unplug it and turn it on, now it should say a number closer than before, like 98% or 99% (mine was 99) or it may be 100%. If it shows 100% then you're good to go with the calibration, but if it shows less, repeat the process by letting charge until 100 and then doing the same steps as before until you turn it on without charging and finally it shows 100% battery.
Please report back if this steps worked for you, because for me I think it made the trick.
Now for the battery drain what I did was this steps,
STEPS THAT MAY STOP THE POST-NOUGAT HEAVY BATTERY DRAIN (android OS drain, etc):
-Unlock and Root the phone
- Install ABC rom (check the post here in XDA)
- Flash ElementalX kernel (also here)
- Install the app "ex kernel manager" from the play store
- Enter settings and disable printers (you still can enable them if you have to print something)
- Install Greenify from the play store and select all the apps that don't use notifications.
- Uninstall unnecessary apps that you don't use anymore.
- In the Ex Kernel manager app go to CPU -> governor options and select "load". Choose one of the following recommended profiles: Excalibur V2, Dragon Fly v1, Butterfly or DeadPool. (Or check the guide in XDA about governor profiles).
- Finally activate the run on boot option and reboot to recovery, wipe dalvik and cache and then boot into system.
If you have luck like me, your phone will run very smooth and battery life will be normal to it's current degradation. My phone now last me all day like before and I don't have to charge it twice or three times like I did and best of all, when I don't use it, it almost don't lose battery (2 to 3% overnight).
Also I've never seen again that android system process consuming the same amount as the screen!
I hope this serve someone and maybe save some phones too , I never resigned my 6p because it's a great phone with one of the best cameras out there even today and with great speakers too.

UPDATE: Today my nexus shutdown at 10% but only because I opened on purpose the camera to check if that is the problem, and aparently it is. I've read that when then phone has low power, an app that consumes a lot of battery like the camera may cause shutdown to prevent the phone damaging internal components. So no fix for that at the moment, just don't use the camera with low percentage.
Hi, I don't know if this thread is still on but I'd like to say that I had the same issue. I have a Nexus 6, as you said, and I've installed on it the Resurrection Remix ROM (Neo version). After that, the phone suddenly shut down everytime it reaches 20 or 30 %. I tried two solutions they suggested me;
1) In bootloader menu, go on bootloader logs and press start button for 10 seconds more or less (when you get Google logo and the phone actually boot)
2) Try to reboot the phone in Safe mode and then back in Normal mode
I've also tried to calibrate again the battery (maybe I did it wrong); I followed a guide on it but I can't remember every step of it (if interested I'll try to find it again). Nothing worked, the phone still presents the same issue and I really don't know what to do. I'd like to try this too hoping it works otherwise the last thing I can do, I guess, try to flash again the ROM. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much

The battery works PERFECTLY; before I flashed the ROM it worked so damn good so I really can't believe that it needs to be replaced, I know that the phone is really old but it always worked fine so it's more logical presume that the problem is with the flashing
Using Stock Nexus 6 Shamu Kernel, with last TWRP and RR OS
Just replace your battery - you might think it's the flashing etc, but at the end of the day my money is on your battery just having called it day, which they can do quite suddenly.
I found that once that early shut down starts it gets worse quick.
It's not that big of deal to change out on these phones anyway and if you do it yourself it's cheap (15 dollars or so). - I've just done it for the second time, not that I was having early shutdowns with my first replacement but after about 18 months life was starting to wane.
Just sharing my experience with my nexus 6p.
Early shutdown problem sure gives us headache. Already tried several methods like calibration, reflashing to factory images, downgrade to minor build or major build, none of them works.
The only solutions that works for me is replace the battery, only cost between $10 to $20 for me (it depend on type battery that you buy, mine is OEM one)
Hello, giving a try to the OP guide regarding early battery shut down. Just a quick question - how long does it take for battery to drain out while in recovery mode? Screens been on for like 2hours now, I see top right screen corner the battery % completely disappear, but recovery still usable. Just wonder, how long it will take for phone to auto shutdown while in recovery mode?
And if this does not work, I'll just replace battery, like @reintakura wrote above.

I tried this the other day. The phone shut off when the low battery came on. I kept powering it up. The first few times it shut off immediately. The next time it turned on and said I had 10% left. Let that 10% run down, it powered off. I kept powering it on... it would boot. I did this maybe 50 times, every time it would boot and then shut down. Then the last time it got "stuck" on the Shutting Down screen. I let it sit like that for a good 10 minutes. It never powered off, it just was stuck on the shutting down screen. I held the power button down to initiate a hard shut down. Plugged it into the charger, device off. Screen said it was 100% a few hours later. Turned on device, device reported 100% used it until it got to 70% and then the low battery light came on and it powered off. Let it charge overnight with device off. Right now it's slowly losing battery, I'm at 76% and it hasn't shut down.
Strange stuff going on.

I can't believe I spent $200 on this **** phone and waited 3 years to get it thinking its the best thing since fried rice, mine started shutting down at 20-30% now it shuts down anywhere from 30-85%!!!!!!!! ahahahahahaha in the end its my fault for buying refurbished, someone obviously sent this crap back already and they did nothing to fix it and conned me into buying it.

Hi, there. This reply is way late, but I've been away for years and I've only now decided to come back, so I'm necroposting on everything that's relevant to me right now. I hope that's not a serious offense.
I've had my 6P since August 2016. I bought it NOS from Google Fi at a slight discount. It worked like a charm for me for years until around winter 2018/2019, when it started shutting down in the cold. I figured that was understandable. I bike a lot, even in sub-zero temperatures, and I tended to keep my phone in the breast pocket of my windbreaker.
It didn't care too much for that.
So, I started putting it into my backpack and it stopped shutting down.
Then, this summer (2020), the battery went off a cliff. It's been dying anywhere from 80 to 10% since June. Maps and the Camera are the big killers, but the battery will plummet from literally any use.
Yet, it will idle for days if leave it alone.
I recently decided to just wipe the thing back to factory and see if that solved anything. It was quite a feeling to scuttle all of my SMS (I backed them up to my Google account, but it seems like they've gone to some mysterious corner of the Internet from which they cannot be retrieved. Alas). It was kind of a catharsis to throw it all away.
I did back up all my media, however.
The factory reset solved nothing, so I tried the OP's recommendation. I loaded into the bootloader and, instead of waiting on the primary screen, I went into (stock) Recovery (my phone isn't yet rooted) and ran the display test a bunch of times. I alternated between that and selecting "Barcodes" since the all white screen is a bigger drain on the battery than the black and green default.
Eventually, the thing died, but it took hours. This, despite that it would die at the snap of the fingers when in the OS. Strange. I charged the device while off until it said it was full. It came on at 95%. I followed the OP's guide until it turned on at 100.
Yet, it still started draining immediately.
The current culprit is "Mobile Network Standby," which is rich because this phone has no SIM, so why is it even bothering to try and futz with the mobile network? I had been keeping the device on Airplane Mode, but I'd forgotten to turn it back on. I just reactivated that mode, so we'll see if that helps.
However, if I watch a guitar repair video on YouTube (pretty staid, not like gaming or an action movie), the battery just nosedives again.
I don't think that rooting and flashing a new ROM is going to solve this issue.
I bought a replacement battery. I'm just not eager to try and install it. So I may just try root and flash, since it's easier. I guess we'll see what happens.

your battery is probably aged, I got the same problem and replacing battery is the only solution that'll work.

I reckon that you are correct. However, I am noticing that my phone hasn't crashed since I followed the OPs charging guide. That's something, at least.
Although monstrous battery drain is still a huge problem. I will be swapping the battery.
My question is: root first and flash something custom, just to see what happens? For evidence gathering ... in the name of empiricism.
Or just go ahead with the swap before doing anything else?

yeah try root and installing ABC oreo ROM if that doesn't make differ at all then replacing battery is the only solution.
