SMS and MMS - Huawei Ascend Mate 2

I'm having a couple of issues. MMS messages aren't sending from time to time and also when I use Go SMS I'm not getting notifications most of the time. Any ideas?

MMS could be network issues, so check that out. Or, if you have AdBlock Plus, it is known to interfere with MMS.
As for SMS, the app may be getting killed by the system (such as when the screen is off), so notifications don't appear.

AdBlock Plus definitely caused MMS problems for me. Another member suggested on certain networks there was a port setting to be changed, (have a look at the other threads), though I could not actually change the port setting and instead I occasionally have to view an ad.

Yup, you had to go to Settings > mobile networks > access point names and change some MMS port from "80" to "8080". I couldn't change it either, and anyway, ads kept appearing even when I set AdBlock to restrict all ads. Also it was using >100 MB of RAM, so I just deleted it.
If you can't change the port settings, an "alternative" would be to enable AdBlock's notification. Whenever you want to send or receive MMS, click the notification and disable AdBlock. And then when you're done, enable it again. It's not the best solution, I know.

If you want an alternative to adblock you could try adfree which blocks ads by updating the hosts file.
There is also an xposed module minminguard which can block ads in an application.

Mine doesn't do that are you running a stock rom, and what carrier?
Mine doesn't do that either on Sprint.
Yea mine doesn't do that although I wish it did like my og EVO did

I'm on stock Rom. But every ttime I get a text, my screen lights up for about 3 seconds
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Since you didn't answer the question of which carrier, I am going with that its Sprint from the model number in your signature.
My girlfriend's S3 is also doing this on her AT&T variant. I haven't been able to find an answer.
I have an AT&T one and it won't do it for email or text and I really would like it to. Must be a setting. Someone has to know.
You have to change the stock app. Stock messaging app is bad anyways. Look into GO SMS Pro or another app of your choice. The app has what your looking for then disable your stock messaging app.
For email just use the Gmail client. This also has the option for it.
Its all about the apps folks. I don't think the stock app has a way to have the screen to just remain off.
I think he is using blazer Rom from phantomhacker cause I also notice it. Sprint version btw.

Workaround
Found a quick fix to this that is way better than defaulting to another SMS app. Simply download "SMS pop up" from the play store, make sure its enabled, and under additional preferences untick "screen on pop up" and then under notification settings untick "enable pop up" (unless you want the pop up of course). You will have to untick the regular SMS app notifications under settings but its a fix that's working for me that still keeps the stock messaging app intact.

That will stop the screen from waking every time but won't turning notifications off in sms settings also prevent the phone the phone from letting you know at all that you have a message?
that is a nice woorkaround but too bad we have to use double the battery and 2 apps running at once to stop it. There has go to be a solution !
I made a thread about this yesterday. It happens to me everytime. On vzw
I'm running ATT variant and my screen wakes up when I get a text. Im currently rooted and looking through the messaging defaults with root explorer. Im sure theres a setting in there that is set to 1 or true that is doing this or vice versa for everyone else. I havent had an android device for quite some time so it might take me a bit to find it. If someone is a bit more experienced than me they'll probably find it faster.

Following what I wrote: If you disable the stock sms notifications under messaging>setting then the phone will not recieve any notifications regarding new messages. This is why SMS Popup is used instead. It uses a notifications service in conjunction with an optional popup to notify you when a new message arrives. If you enable notifications in SMS Popup, you will still receive notifications when new messages arive. SMS Popup is the service that will receive and notify you of the message, not the stock messaging app. It also has some other features including color customization of the LED light and selecting a specific SMS vibrate pattern. Like I said if you disable the "Enable popup" setting under the "notification" menu in SMS Popup it can serve as a intermittent workaround. As for the need to install it to accomplish this simple setting, it has a low battery and memory footprint as it is mostly a simple service and not a fully effective SMS replacement application. I have spent countless hours trying different solutions to this issue and this seems to be the best most effective workaround I could find whilst dodging SMS replacement apps like handscent and chomp. It was imperative for me to not have my screen light up in my pocket as I choose to go without a lock screen. Hope this helps and is a worthy solution until some development ushers in a new more efficient solution. Cheers!
There's got to be a way using root privileges to stop this. Heck we can stop the annoying wifi pop ups.
Thanks srath16 for finding a hackish way around.

I completely understand now. That's. Cool. There got to be a more in house way of doing this, but that would work in the meantime. Thanks for sharing.
This happens to me also and im running on Verizon at the moment would love if someone could find a way to fix this.

Right. This isn't an "issue", it's just a feature that Samsung has deployed that some like and some don't. Being able to turn it on and off though would be nice.

Group messaging is missing

I seemed to have lost the ability to send or receive group messages. My Hangouts app does not have the option under advanced settings, where it was definitely there on my nexus 5. I have had the phone for a week and I only noticed after I tried to send a group message so I am not sure if it was there and disappeared or it was never there to begin with. Group messages get sent as individual SMS instead of MMS. The phone is rooted.

I don't really know if is related to your root, but I doubt it, I have my group conversation options in both, default and Hangouts apps, so just to see, go to your default messaging app and go to settings, multimedia messages and be sure that you have the Group conversation selected there, maybe, and I'm guessing here, if it's not selected there, maybe Hangouts don't give you the option.

From what I've read, it would seem its a problem with the phone. I've also gotten mixed responses from the community here on XDA. Everything from Samsung saying they got rid of that feature all the way to it's the Sim cards. I don't have the option on any of them. So I'm in the same boat.

I had the same issue as you.. Both of my SIM cards were ISIS sim cards. The one that came with the phone didnt allow for group messaging and the new one did..
I also have a issue with the stock messaging app not handling group conversations correctly when i am on wifi. When wifi is off, they come just fine, except they come in way slower than my wifes iphone 5S.. we both have tmobile.. I might be tempted to go back to the iphone 5s
I have the option on my text messenger settings.. But my buddy just got his phone and this option is not available... What could that mean?

I haven't been able to find the setting for it It was easy on my Note 4. I use CM Security and it has it built in so that works pretty well.
Unfortunately it's not built in like on some other devices. I do the same thing I did on the Nexus 6, which is create a contact called SPAM. Then in Contacts, you go to that contact's settings and there's an option for Send Calls to Voicemail, check that box. Then as unwanted calls come in, you just long-press them and add to that SPAM contact. Mine has a couple hundred numbers so far, and this works really well.
On tmobile I just click phone app and hit the menu at the upper right for settings. Reject call list. Hope this helps.
I guess it's different on the Verizon version because I don't see that option
Block the number from your account on verizon's website.
A basic feature that every phone should have. Once again VZW deletes a useful feature (see LG G4), Why???!!!
Why would they keep that feature on a device when they can charge you $5 a month for Family Base?
Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
I was searching for the same problem and here is what I found:
"Find out how to block unwanted calls and messages. You can block up to 5 phone numbers for each line on your account with no charge with My Verizon".
Also:
"Permanently block up to 20 contacts for a low monthly fee. You'll also be able to monitor and limit minute, text and data usage for up to 10 devices on your account"
Cost: $5/month"
I saw some non-verizon apps for blocking phonecalls. Anyone tried it?
Thanks,
zb
There is an option that you can send all calls to VM so I would say to create one contact and just keep adding the number you want blocked and select to send that contact's number to VM.
Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
It sucks that Verizon eliminated the Block Caller from this phone!
I like the idea to make a Spam Contact and force it into V.M. every time - although I do get some telemarketing terrorists who will leave a message ... then I'm stuck going through them to eliminate the good V.M.'s from the bad.
I also use an App called TrueCaller. It's not perfect, but it's mostly effective. Carefully select the options you want and block any calls you like. I've allowed them to block calls their database has found to be spam/scam and it works quite well. At the end of a week, I'll surf through the calls they've blocked that I never saw hit my phone and it's impressive.
Hope this helps.
You can create a contact then add the numbers that you want to block then use the 3 dots on the right and select send to VM.
Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk
I used Sync.me from the appstore. Not only does it sync your contacts, but you can also enable SPAM blocking and it has some pretty advanced caller ID as well. I have a HTC M9, but would think it works on the LG V10.
I use Reverse Lookup +, I've used it for years for this.
I used QuickShortcutMaker (on play store). Start the app then search for call reject. Create a shortcut. Done. Calls go to Voicemail. Doubt it blocks sms though.
Sent from my VS990 using XDA Free mobile app
Found out that the call blocking is still in the phone, just hidden.
To get to it Nova Launcher has to be installed:
1. Long Press on home screen
2. Select Widgets
3. Activities widget and drag to home screen
4. Scroll down to Call Services and click to drop down menu
5. Select Call Reject Mode (.CallRejectActivity)
And there you go, you have access to the call reject list!

The apps worked great -- until Verizon removed the settings from the V10. The apps were just "front ends" for those settings on the phone plus they added a bit more functionality.
The apps no longer work without the blocking settings VZ removed.

SMS/MMS Settings

Hi. Does anybody know how to change SMS/MMS settings in Honor 5X? I'm on Marshmallow 6.0.1 and I cannot find in the Messaging app
settings for basic things. For example, encoding for SMS (i.e GSM 7-bit.) Also, for some reason I started to get a warning about "fees" when
I try to sent a SMS and then when I check my account at my mobile carrier, texts sent appear like MMS type instead of SMS.
Any input is welcome. Thanks, guys.

Yes, Menu shows Favorites, Emergency Alerts, Harrassment Filter, and Settings.
However, browsing all of them don't provide the options I'm looking for.
On, Lollipop, there were some at Settings > Advanced but now on Marshmallow they removed them (e.g. Group MMS.)

Google Messenger FTW.
No encoding setting even on lolipop that I recall, settings>apps>more>messaging .
Marshmellow removed a huge amount of important setings and ability use add-on app advanced settings and was a reason I didn't like the so called upgrade as downgrade in many ways.
Biggest issue with huawei is weak firmware and inability to send out fixes on major weak areas .

Question List of applications that can be uninstalled with adb commands

Can we post here the list of safe apps to uninstall with ADB commands?
I just downloaded APK Extractor from the Play Store - I looked for any logos of the apps I would never use and removed them. I can't list every single one as they're all gone now. I only had an issue uninstalling the SMS messaging app. Had to reinstall that one as the system automatically defaults to it. Without it installed, I wasn't getting any texts coming through. Lame!
Great info !
Then uninstal chinese apps is easy and without risk with Apk Extractor ?
Only keep the original sms app and choose an other that we choice for Message (for me it's Signal).

I don't think any messaging apps will work (Google Messages, Signal, etc.) because the Chinese ROM will force default to Oppo Messaging as soon as you receive an SMS/MMS.

How do you mean Oppo forces the official app Mail? It doesn't for me?
I've been using Blackberry Inbox for mail, and it works great and it is the default mail app on my Find N. I've actually uninstalled the official app (just using the normal app uninstall, not adb). So it doesn't force a different mail app for me, and in fact the official mail app is no longer on the phone.

I must admit, I have notifications turned off for Blackberry Inbox, as I find mail notifications annoying (as I get too many), and I check my mail regularly anyhow. But you should get mail notifications if you make sure that AquaMail is one of the 5 apps you allow to auto startup, allow it to run in the background, and you turn off battery optimization for the app. Another tip would be to pin the app in task view so that when the memory is cleaned it stays in memory.

I haven't tried as I'm fine using the stock SMS/MMS app, as I don't use SMS/MMS much (mostly Whatsapp/Wechat/Telegram, etc. these days). As I've said somewhere else, I usually try not to fight a new phone, but work with it, and the stock messages app works quite well, and has nice features like tap to fill when you receive a auth code, etc.
There is a setting to change the default messaging app; but others have had problems trying to use another messaging app or dialer/phone app as default (I assume did try setting the default to something else) and apparently it resets to the system default? Worth a go though.

Again, sorry I haven't tried that, as I don't use group SMS/MMS messaging; I use Whatsapp/Wechat/Telegram for that type of group messaging. In the UK MMS messages are usually an additional (sometimes expensive) cost, and so it has never really taken off here as far as I'm aware; and everyone I know uses Whatsapp, etc. for that kind of thing.

And I personally will never use it's build-in password manager, voice assistant, float ball navigator, cloud service, file manager and baidu input so I disabled them, keep those you want
One thing, adb can't disable or uninstall built-in app store, and in some situation, I use it to install some Chinese specific apps.

Lame!

Hi there,
Have you got a link to this app? As the one I have got doesn't seem to give me the option of deleting apps? Just extracting them
Many Thanks!

You don't delete them in the app. You have to delete them using a command prompt on your PC. The app just tells you the package name of each app so you know what to delete.
