[Q] Z Ultra or Nexus 5? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi guys.
So i've been thinking about buying either one of these devices.
i'm leaning more towards the z ultra because it's such a gorgeous device, but i don't know if i'll be able to carry it around like a regular smartphone and i've been seeing a lot of complaints about screens breaking.
i really wanted the opinion of you guys on this, how is it to use a z ultra in your daily routine, is it weird to walk around with it on your pocket?
the nexus 5 however, is a beautiful device aswell, but a 5" screen seems too small for me.
so, z ultra, might be too big and fragile?
and nexus 5, too small?
or maybe there is another device that can reach a mid-term?

It must be only me but the last phone I carried in my pocket was a Motorola flip phone years ago. I carry the ZU in a nylon tool holster pouch that clips on to my pants pocket (it also has a belt loop but it stays on fine with clip).

Carrying around a nylon tool holster is too ugly imo.
but i've seen a few videos and seems like it fits very well in most pants and shorts. want to know if it feels to heavy on the pocket? or weird?

IN my tighter pants (with smaller pockets) it sticks out a little and is noticeable, in all my shorts and most pants it's fine. Note I have mine in a flip cover so that adds some more bulk to the ZU.

Hmm nice to know. it realy amazes me how cheap this phone got, it's cheaper than the nexus 5 and the lg g2 and it has that massive screen.
btw, i saw a review from a guy saying it uses gorila glass 3, but i don't think it does, can anyone clear that out?
and, is there a chance of the screen breaking just by using it in a mildly tight pocket ? cause i've seen a lot of posts here saying the screen is very fragile.

The Z Ultra really isn't fragile: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6Rf2q4b-24

What about weight wise, does it weights in your pocket?

I don't find the phone to be heavy at all, especially for its size. It's freaking huge though, which can be a burden at times.

Carrying it around in your front pocket, which i do, can be uncomfortable when you're sitting down, bending, etc. I wear loose fitting jeans, and im 6-2", so it isn't too bad. This Phone is just plain huge though, and it will be a problem for some people.
Watch this video and check out this girl trying to stick it in her pocket.

Hmmm. firetruck! that just made me more unsure, cause the phone is extremely cheap right now with such an amazing hardware. would you happen to know any good phone with a screen bigger than or equal to 5.5 and same hardware for the same price?

You can buy a 1+

Doesn't have to buy where i'm going to buy.
is the lg g2 or nexus 5 any good?

Wait for the nexus 6 google it i was announced today

Can't, it'll be released in november and i'll be doing a trip at the end of this month, and i'm going to buy the phone there cause it's way cheaper than where i live.
i'm still in doubt between the lg g2, nexus 5 or the z ultra :/

I had the nexus 5 and switched over to the xzu.. I have to say given the opportunity I'd take back my Nexus 5. Don't get me wrong performance wise and price they are both on par. I've installed a ported version of the Google play edition Rom and it works perfectly well. Downside is the size of this device,, it really is massive and I bought it thinking I would get use to it eventually... 2 months on and I'm still having a hard time getting use to holding it. Also I'm not sure if this issue is wide spread but the screen on this thing is super sensitive (no screen protector). When I say sensitive I mean as in I get random presses from just about anything from screen condensation, breeze and oil smudges and it gets so annoying especially when you're trying to compose an email and it hits the send button mid way. I've even tried out a hack to reduce the screen sensitivity but it still occurs from time to time. Also coming from a Nexus line I have to say there's barely any activity or new developments in the XZU forums,,something you might want to consider if you're into customizing or flashing roms all the time.

i think i'm sticking with the z ultra afterall.
i've received a very positive review of this smartphone by a friend of mine who owns one, he says this is the best phone he ever had.

Just remove the ASF and apply a tempered glass over for reinforcement. No more ghost touches and you get the best experience.
Also you get the naked Nexus look on front without logo.
Best device I had in years and trust me I had a lot, including Nexus 5.

I'm holding on removing the ASF for now since I have to order the glass screen protector which takes about 4weeks to arrive from hongkong.

is there any difference in the z ultra GPe and the regular Z ultra?
is it only the stock android? if yes, can u get the stock android for the regular version of z ultra?

[Q] general question before jumping ship

little background: Currently having G2 and toying with it for a month now. Just got a GN3 couple days ago. Looking at XZU now to compare which one I like the most. Before G2, I used GN2 and GN1 for the past 2 years.
Question:
1. I read some topics here mentioning that the XZU will fit on the front/back jeans. I am worried if I squat down, would it break the screen/glass? I wear no skinny jeans.
2. Dilemma 1: having a nice leather case will definitely eliminate the ability of the phone going underwater. While having no case at all, may cause the phone scratched easily. What do you guys think?
3. Dilemma 2: Is screen protector necessary? read bunch of comments saying that the screen is easily scratched while using pencil as stylus. The same as question no. 2 about submerging to water.
appreciate your time.

Your question doesn't make much sense...considering this is a z ultra forum, my guess is most people would say choose the z ultra, case or no case. The phone you choose is YOUR decision to make and only YOU can make that decisions since YOU will use the phone.
you already have the g2 and the note 3, go to your local retailer and try out the z ultra, see which you prefer among the three and then make the decision yourself. You already know what your needs are, you already know your phone use habits are.
the z ultra is a big phone, in fact is the biggest phone short of a tablet, so carrying it around will not be as convenient as smaller phones like the g2. however the size is also the main attraction point, especially for people that consume a lot of media on the go.

1) I do not wear jeans much. Most of my pants are with huge sack.
2) I do not use the phone in the water, what I need to this phone mostly internet, internet, internet, and media, the water resistance is just a bonus for me.
3) I use screen protector and leather case
my previous phone are tab.7.7 (the giant phone), then note 1 which I don't use the spen much and XZU has ideal screen size for me, to be honest I choose XZU because the size and build quality..
if spen or stylus really necessary, I will buy note 10.1 or at least note 8.0

If you have the Note 3 and you're happy with it, don't get the Ultra or any other device. Keep it. There's no reason to switch from something you're happy with to something you might be happy with, The Note 3 has the S-Pen, the Ultra does not. You can use whatever pen or pencil you want with the Ultra, but it doesn't have all the special features that the Note 3 has, If you're really curious about the Ultra, i recommend you to go to a store and check it out in person. It's pretty pretty big, but you get used to it pretty fast. Still, it's a niche device, and it's not for everyone. You might laugh about its size, but i've warned you
1. Yes, it will fit in your front pocket, but it might crack or bend if you sit down (the frame is aluminium/aluminum)
2. I hate cases so i'm going fully nude. You won't get any scratches as long as you don't have it in the same pocket as your keys, sharp objects etc. Standard phone stuff, really.
3.The Ultra comes with a shatter proof screen protector out of the box. It's extremely hard to get off, so you should either peel it off (if you have betweeen 2 and 84 weeks on hand), or buy a seperate screen protector and use it on top of the "other" protector". The original protector will scratch if you use a pen or pencil on it (it's plastic after all). So, you can either (as mentioned) just use the original protector (like i do, but i don't use pen or pencils on it), buy a seperate screen protector, or peel the original protector off and go completely naked and write/draw directly on the glass.
But again, if you're happy with the Note 3, don't get it unless you REALLY want it, and if you really want it, check it out in real life.

any owners that also had a Galaxy Mega?

I currently have the Galaxy Mega and absolutely love it...that being said when i saw the google play edition of the Z ultra last night I got a bit envious. has anyone come from the mega and if so what are your thoughts? i know there is little size difference but what were your impressions?
obviously, i'm fine with big phones but i'm concerned about the camera since i have an infant and taking pictures is actually important to me now.
also, i am wondering if you can use the Samsung MHL cable on the XZU as i use mhl daily. would be nice not to have to buy another cable.
I have no experience with the Mega, but your MHL cable won't work. Samsung MHL adapters are 11 pins while the rest are 5 pins. Non-Samsung adapters are very cheap though ($10 bucks)

I came from a Mega:
This is so much more powerful. Like, crazy powerful. It completely devastates the Mega. It's noticable the second you start using it, its just so fast and smooth.
The second big improvement is the screen. The Mega has an awesome screen for 720p, but the panel in the Ultra is epic.
The third big improvement is surprisingly battery life! The Ultra is considerably better.
Fourth big improvement is in signal quality. I am UK based so don't use LTE currently, but 3G the Ultra gets a stronger signal pretty much everywhere.
It's waterproof, which is never a bad thing.
Oh and I nearly forgot... Roms. There is already an excelent CM10.2 build available for the Ultra, as well as a fair few other roms and obviously the GPE just got announced and that will bring a tidal wave of very high quality roms. The Mega development section on the other hand is virtually a barren wasteland, and being both underpowered and Touchwiz inflicted it is in desperate need of a decent AOSP build. The Ultra is actually fine stock ironically, Sony only lightly skin Android and the stock rom is near-AOSP anyway.
On the downsides:
The Mega did fit in my pocket better, though I still keep my Ultra in the front pocket of my jeans just as I did with my Mega. The angular design looks good, but it is a little impractical on a device this big.
The touchscreen is prone to occasional mistouches, mainly if it's dirty. Not a big issue by any means, but a minus point non the less.
The camera is much better on the Mega, particularly in low light.
The "ASF" screen protection fitted as standard is stupid. It's plastic based, so it will scratch considerably easier than the strengthened glass beneath it and doesn't feel as nice under the finger. If you remove the film, which took me about 3 hours, the glass underneath doesn't have any oleophobic coating and so gets dirty easily. I plan on buying some of the Fusso replacement oleophobic coating on the net soon to resolve this once and for all, but that costs £20 and it shouldn't be necessary.
For me, the Ultra is the MUCH better phone. I'm really happy with mine, probably the best phone I have ever owned. :good:
i just returned my mega to buy a z ultra play edition, the mega wasn't powerful enough and didn't have enough customization options for me.

thanks for the help.
some of the things that make me weary of the XZU - i think the sharp pretty much sucks and prefer the rounded corners. i'm not sure if it being a bit bigger will be much of a problem or not. i went to the store to try to find one and its not in stock anywhere yet.
i really want a stock android experience though and i'll never ever get that on the Mega since they'll never get MHL to work and i use mhl daily with my appradio 2 and must have it.
that google play edition is so so tempting...i better not even mention i bought another phone after just getting the mega 6 weeks ago.
is it at all easier to use being so much thinner? i didn't think that would matter though in ease of use but not sure.
It's actually ridiculously thin. I have a hard time picking it up from the table. It's almost like trying to pick something flat off the ground and you can't really get a grip. It would've been brutal for the pockets if it was thicker.

do you use a case with it?
i am also confused about this screen protector? is it a protector just built onto the phone that most people don't like or remove but its really hard to take off? i haven't seen any reviews mentioning it.
I'm not using a case. I like to use my devices naked. The screen protector is an "Anti shatter film" that's preventing glass from shattering once you break it. You may remove it if you want to, but I've heard that it takes like three hours to do it since it's really thin and it breaks into tiny pieces. It's not a good protector, so the oleophobic layer (anti smudge) layer will start to come of after some use. Also, since it's a plastic sheet, using pens on it to take notes or draw isn't recommended since it will naturally scratch it. Sony sure employed a brainiac to do this job, and I can't understand why they would do this.
Either way, that's just how it is. You won't notice or even see the protector, and if you get scratches, you can remove it and use your own protector. It just takes a lot of time. You can read all about it in a thread that's lying around here some place.

I'm using a black TPU case I got off ebay for £3, it doesn't add hadly any bulk but ofers decent protection.
I bought the Mega for the mrs. She wanted a large screen but doesn't need all the bells and whistles and see loves it and is used to TW having come from a note 2.
Honestly I like both devices, but for a hardcore tinkerer like me I had to have the Ultra.

yes, i just wish there was somewhere i could go check out the device before buying it.
the biggest thing i think i will hate is that screen protector on the phone. that seems like the dumbest decision ever to put that on out of the factory.

Yeah, you won't notice it at all unless you get some bad scratches. Just treat it as a gadget, and not a piece of meat, and you probably won't get any.
If you have an infant and pictures are key for you then avoid this phone like the plague. I have young kids also and this camera sucks. However otherwise the phone is very good in every other aspect.

I dont like Samsung products, bcuz they all look like sanitary napkins.
I'm waiting for my ZU to come in the mail I'm so excited coming from a Mega 6.3!
After playing with a friends ZU, the thing that I will appreciate most on the ZU is the faster processor and larger RAM, although I must admit I do wish the camera on it was a bit better with flash!! I'm a girl and I like to take selfies geez... :silly:

I owned the original Xperia Z and loved the mobile. Reviewers all gave it some negative feedback as when they sat in the kitchen they could not see the screen from the living room due to what they called "Poor viewing angles". I found this odd and got into all sorts of trouble on one review site, Trusted reviews, where they are anything but' trusted'.
I digress. The Z came with this new 'anti shatter film' Point is within only a few days of very respectful use I could actually see tiny marks on this laminate membrane. I spoke with the Sony importer here who advised me to fit a screen protector, in some countries they where sold with the screen protectors in the box. At that time this confused me as I thought both one and the other where the same thing? Not the case at all.
The anti shatter film is fitted as when the water resistant idea was in development the designers realised that customers would use them by a pool or near water like a beach. This caused some concern as if the phone got wet it became slippery and if dropped the screen could shatter and leave shards of glass all over the place where people could cut themselves (not to mention the cost of emptying and refilling a pool). To prevent any such problem and, I guess, avoid legal action? Sony fitted the new range of water resistant devices with these anti shatter films. Great idea.............
IN PRACTCE they have proved so soft they scratch far to readily and in terms of the Ultra it would be suicide to use a pencil on that anti shatter film.
here again is Sony being innovators of great new developments yet so often dropping the ball at the last hurdle!
I have a very decent screen protector fitted on my Ultra that I always order the same time I purchase any phone, phablet or tablet. I also always purchase a decent cover to further protect the device. I would like to use them without a cover but just cannot bare to think of scratching my devices. So good looking yet the cases do hide their good looks also add greatly to the bulk.
Life is all about compromise though.
I suggest comparing the Samsung mega against the Ultra is an unfair test to start with. Size being the only common denominator. With the exception of the camera, so I am told, the Ultra is made to a higher standard in terms of materials used in construction also the other operational hardware is more advanced. I am a Samsung fan but have never been a fan boy of any brand. Its a question of purchase what satisfies ones needs and requirements. I also own the SG Note 3 and gear, they are both now boxed and in a draw ready to sell.

Will you be using a case on your G3?

If/when you get the G3, will you put it in a case immediately?
I used to never use cases until I dropped and cracked my Note 2, so now I've always used cases. I didn't mind using one on the G2 since the back was a glossy, slippery plastic and I didn't care for it, but the G3 looks awesome and I'd hate to cover it up.

I plan on 2 cases, 1 minimal case for everyday and 1 dual layer for when I know it'll be more likely to take a tumble.

I always use a case to protect the phone. It actually increases the resell value as the phone seems like new after removal of case.
LG made a case for the G3 that enhances the use of QuickCircle™. QuickCircle is basically the use of widgets without turning the whole screen on which can save (very little) battery.
Since my description is horrible, here is a video of it posted by LG themselves:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVtZAPjOcBI
case, possibly a mophie if that 3000mAh can't handle the 4k too well, and if it does, then Incipio. I'm not a fan of otterboxes. Both because I don't ever wanna spend 100+ to repair a cracked anything: I like my phone DAPPER. Also for resell value as well. Thats how I buy new ones.
If I do end up getting a G3, I'll certainly get a case. If I were to guess, a case has saved my Nexus 4 at least twice.
I had seen in a background of one of the summary videos a Tridant stand with an array of different colors. Though Tridant does make pretty thick cases so I'll probably stay away from it. Definitely looking for something with a slim design. Probably get another Diztronic
I dont why I dont like the round back of the g3 amazing device and specs but the rounded back feels and looks bad in my point of view.

Would you be saying the same thing if you dropped it and cracked the screen? *knocks on wood* That you don't be I'm curious how many people would say the same once they drop it and have to buy new phones or get it repaired.
Me, I always get a case since I like to protect my investment and better to be safe than sorry. Plus, having a case has saved my phones in the past.

I hear you but I stopped using cases on my phone going back to the nexus one. I may get a ding or 2 here and there but, knock on wood, I've never cracked a screen. I do use screen protectors and most recently have fallen in love with tempered glass screen protectors.

I never use cases or screen protector on phones, I keep them naked as god intended
In 15 years with mobiles, I never dropped any of them once.
I usually have a case ready for when I go on holidays, to the beach or in any place where I'll toss the phone in a bag. Apart from that, nope.
It's a problem. When you use a case you keep your phone safe from breaking and scratching, but you lose the light weight, the small size and the ergonomic design. I think I'll try to use it without a case this time.
There are slim cases that don't ruin the phone. I am going to get a clear case made my ringkle I think.

I will get hybrid case for protection.
Granted, my Note 3 fell in hard ground few times, but it's saved due to protection of hybrid case.
There was a time when I used to swear by the biggest bulkiest cases to protect my device like a baby for resale purposes. But after many years of seeing that I pretty much never drop my phone (due to the way I handle it) and I'm buying these nice feeling slim devices all the time but the whole time I am just holding a thick piece of rubber in my hand and never actually getting to feel the device design, I decided I am done with cases.
Thanks to the recent introduction of tempered glass screen protectors to the market, I can now have piece of mind that in the rare case I drop my phone screen-side down I would still be able to use it without worrying about a single damage to the display itself. I swear by caseless devices ever since I had the Galaxy S3 and I have not regretted the decision since. Of course, such scenario doesn't work for everyone if you are not OCD-like careful with your devices like I am and are prone to drops quite often. In that case I would recommend a high quality ultra-slim case if you want to maintain the design/feel of the phone with just a slightly different material (matte/rubberized plastic cases can actually feel pretty nice, kinda reminds me of the Nexus 5).
i normally don't like to put a case on my phone as it'll disturb the aesthetic intention of the design. however, if its a slim case that doesn't interrupt the design of the phone, then i might consider one.
This makes me think... All these defeat the purpose of the LG g3 slim design.

I'm the same, rarely drop my phone nowadays and now I use premium screen protectors so the tempered glass protector I just ordered should help the screen from any serious damage.
Not since my S4 do i use cases. Jut make the phone more bulky and ugly. Didn't help my s4 screen just breaking in my pocket from heat change.

6P is the most fragile phone I have used.

I bought a Nexus hoping that this device will last me for years to come.
But I am having doubts that if it will last long without a cover.
I decided not to put a cover on the phone just to make the phone always look good and not be one of those people who are always scared of getting scratches on their phone. However, just after 1 month of usage, the phone is literally having marks and scratches everywhere on the phone (including the visor) except the screen.
Even my 5 and 4 year old Samsung Galaxy 3 and Note 1 which never had a cover either don't have these many scratches, even today.
Why you let me down Huawei?
Is putting a cover the only option I have got?
Hi there,
I have my 6P for 10 months now with case 100% of the time.
Does it help? No.
When I take out the phone, I can see small scratches and dents. This is because some dust particles get in from time to time. This way when the case and the phone move a little touching each other, the surface of the phone is scratched.
It is disappointing.
I have my note 3 which haven't been in a case and it's more than 3 years old now, and does not have so many marks in the back.
This trend to make devices all metal is the dummest thing ever. At least they can put on some coating on the metal or something. :/
This is by far the most fragile phone I've ever had.
I've had mine since Nov 9th 2015. It's been in a case and a tempered glass screen protector since then. Just took it out and it's still mint. No scratches or anything. I also got the graphite.
Agreed, fragile AF!!!! LOL bent two of them in pocket without even doing anything extreme and i dont even wear jeans i wear comfy chinos. LOL so yeah got replacements for those.
TBH i've never seen anyone able to keep their phone in pristine condition with no case. granted they're probably more careful. But AFAIK, the moment they drop it there goes the phone. personally, I'm clumsy enough to warrant a case so i invested in a good Spigen one (see signature) and promptly dropped it on rough tarmac a week into ownership. I'd say if i had no case on, I'd have lost this phone.
Regarding your scratches on your phone, yes. This is aluminum. It's a soft metal. What are you expecting? Have you seen a pristine no case iPhone? This isn't really a "fault". A little bit of adjusting of expectations is in order. I personally like the polycarbonate that I had on my HTC one X of old. Even Samsung's plastic doesn't hold as well against the strength of polycarbonate.
Okay maybe 6p is not the toughest phone around, but comparing it with old samsung devices made of plastic is plain stupid. Its fricking aluminium, soft metal, show me one metal phone without scratches, i can assure you, you cant.
Better to have marks than totally broken phone. I dont use or even have case and I have dropped mine a few times and its not bad. A few marks here on the edges and there and tempered glass has saved the screen once. I have noticed I have much better luck with screens being ok after drops with aluminum phones than I had with plastic ones that always got broken screen when dropped even from low height.
I agree is a bit sensitive, a little flower if you wanna go there.
But it's our responsibility to keep it safe knowing this. I also wanted to use mine naked as it looks better and lighter this way, but it's so prone to on falling and hitting on something that I won't take the chance.
You can get good looking cases as well, Spigen for example looks good and protects it good.
Yeah kills a bit the aspect and gets slightly heavier, but it adds to protection and it's worth it.
Occasionally remove it and clean it to dust it off particles that enter occasionally.

True, but the old phones were quite sturdy, and by old I don't mean Nokia 3310, I mean Androids that came out till the 4.4 era.
Check out the photo of my attached I5800.
Not a single scratch on the screen, only the silver plating has come off.

I dont agree. In the past I always had to change my screen once or phone was full of marks if I didnt cover phone in some kind of casing. Now I dont even bother using a case as the last time I broke a screen from a phone was with Note 2 that I dropped into a puddle on asphalt. For example I had really really bad luck with my M8 like slipping a couple of times and it flew many meters high and landed face down and nothing. A few tempered screens but nothing else than some cosmetic marks. I feel the newer are much much better built than the phones like SGS2, Galaxy Nexus, Desire series etc etc.

that silver plating that has come off is the equivalent to any scratches you find on the back of the phone from putting/taking out of your pockets. It's just normal wear and tear. We need to keep in mind the material strength of the metal/plastic/polycarbonate/glass. The 6p's screen uses Corning gorilla glass 4. That stuff is virtually unscratchable from normal use. Of course you're not going to find much scuffs there compared to its soft aluminum body.

Mate, that's a 5 year old phone.
This is a 1 month old phone.
Well as mentioned it is aluminum. By nature, it's a very soft metal. Think soda can. Obviously it isn't going to be indestructible like some older plastic phones you mentioned earlier. If you're looking for a tank of a phone, maybe you should have considered something else. Nexus line was never really meant to be "premium" and has always been cheaper than other highly marketed flagships. Like mentioned earlier, maybe managing expectations based on this info which has always been the case is in order. I get that you don't like it, so maybe your best bet is to sell and get another phone? I can't speak to the Nexus 6, but I've had my Nexus 5 since launch 2013 and it is still in mint condition. For that I only use the bumper case (wraps around the phone, doesn't cover the back) and still no small wear and tear scratches. Just one big one that I accidentally did with a razor blade.

It's no different from any other aluminum phone. you can't expect it to be as resistant as plastic... we've been trying to tell you this. I really am not sure what you are expecting an aluminum body to be.

You also have to take into account that Titanium isn't as effective as aluminum when it comes to heat transfer, so you'd have a warmer phone which would suffer from higher amounts of thermal throttling.

Bumper that works with mods?

Has anyone found one?
Just got a Z3 play. Had a Z, and my wife has a Z2 play. No trouble getting a bumper for those phones, but can't find one for the Z3 play. It's bumming me out, cause I have troubles with extra screen touches from my hand without the bumper. But definitely need to use mods with it, so other cases are out.
Hopefully someone makes one soon. :fingers-crossed:
I'd watch Sprint and US Cellular's sites once the Z3 Play is available from them. Verizon made the best bumper for the Z and Z2 series, but since they aren't carrying the Z3 Play they won't make one. Hopefully either Sprint or USC will make a bumper. Otherwise I wouldn't hold my breath since there were very few aftermarket bumpers for the Z or Z2 Play.
In also looking for a bumper case for this phone. I hope they make one for us like the z play and play 2.
I wonder if those bumpers with the clear back, would work with the back neatly cut out. Might risk 7 bucks to try it.

@Darth
I wish you good luck, indeed.
My opinion is that *any* bumper or cover will make it hard to reach the sidemounted fingerprint. it sits deeper. With Sony devices, I only used snap-on hard cover with a cutout for the sensor. Which is obviously not possible for the Z1-3 series.
Another issue forced me to dump my expensive Z2 Play Verizon Bumper: It makes the phone too large, so that I can't hold it securely with my short fingers. Two-handed usage, even without...
My solution was to use a full screen protector to prevent scatches while pulling phone out of pocket or screen facing the table. The back side has it's Mod on. This is surely no drop protection onto the edge, but this is a risk I have to live with.

Dang, think I just wasted some cash. LoL
Didn't even think about the fingerprint sensor, which I really don't want to lose. Ah well, I'll have a lightweight case that still lets the nice looking back be seen, that I can use when I don't need the battery mod. Which I don't think I need much really, the battery life has been awesome for me.
My Z had a fried battery I'm sure, would barely last an hour and a half of use. So the battery mod was a full time necessity. Not the Z3 play though. Doubt I need it except as emergency power when I'm not near a plug, or for sitting on the couch.
So I got the case delivered that I linked above. And got to cutting the rubber sides off of the harder clear back.
The bumper does have a cut out for fingerprint scanner and works fine. So that's good! I rushed and my cutting job is really not nice. That's on me. A sharper utility knife blade and taking my time more would have made for a much neater cut. Did it on a breadboard and was extremely careful not to slip and cut a corner open. Really took time cutting out the corners.
I basically cut right along the edge of the hard clear back plastic. My knife was kinda dull though. Was too impatient to get a new blade for it.
But, success! It's on, stays on, and my battery mod is on. It's way flimsier than my Z's old bumper or my wife's Z2 play bumper, but those were thicker cause they were made without backs and made thicker. So the sides move a bit and are a wee bit floppy, but the corners are tight, so it stays on.
Aside from the back being a bit ugly cause of my bad cut, which I'll try to tidy up later, it does work. Just a but flimsy. But I still prefer it to no bumper, for me personally.
I'll probably only use it at home, and will definitely buy a real one if someone ever makes one. I'd like a thicker more sturdy one for sure.
**Try at your own risk and satisfaction not guaranteed.**

Thanks Darth! Can you keep us updated about how it holds up?
You'd think someone wouldn't made an official one by now. It uses less plastic to make a bumper.
Finally found one on sale on amazon! If anyone gets it, please give impressions.
It's aluminium so Idon't know how it will work with the fingerprint sensor. Reviews say it's a bit too thick to place your finger correctly. Now that verizon is supplying the Moto Z3 they might release a rubber bumper like the ones for the moto Z and Z2. I'll wait and see.

I have one like this, from eBay, for the Z2 Play. The "bumper" does not stay on the phone, without the back of the case attached. Even with a Mod attached to the phone it does not seem like the "bumper" portion will remain on the phone. It is very loose.
