[Q] NooB help needed drastically to unroot phone - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Ok so here goes. I had my brother-in-law on my AT&T plan and was paying off his HTC One M8. Due to unforseen circumstances, I have removed him from my plan and have repossessed his phone. I would like to sell it to a friend, but have realized that the phone is rooted and would like to revert back to stock so the phone doesnt show tampered with or unlocked. I have the phone, just need someone to walk me through how to do this. I dont know what he used to root the phone, If there is even a recovery image. I can answer everything about the phone/software if someone can tell me where to locate the info.
PS.... I have been searching through these forums for awhile now and see threads that could apply, however I don't have ANY knowledge to be able to decipher if any of these pertain to my situation. I need a patient expert to walk me through step-by-step if possible.
Thank you in advance,
Ray

Do you know how to get into bootloader (the screen where it says TAMPERED and UNLOCKED)?
If so, on the 3rd line it says either "S-on" or "S-off" (at the end of this line). Which is it?
Also on that screen, it will say hboot number. What is the number?

So I thought I could get to it by restarting my phone, no Luck. Thought I saw somewhere there is a button combo I can use.

Hold volume up button and power button until the phone reboots. The moment the screen goes black, let go of those buttons and hold the volume down button. Do not let go until the white bootloader screen appears.
If you don't get into bootloader, you either started pressing vol down too late, or let go of it too early. So just try again.

Ok, please post hboot number from the bootloader screen.

I do not have access to a PC/cable I can use. I am currently at work and cannot connect my phone to my work laptop for security reasons. I will have access to a PC at home in about 6 hrs.

Okay, sounds good.
I don't normally advocate toolkits, but the following is probably the path of least resistance in your case:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065
Follow instructions under "How to use" to install the phone to your home PC.
Then make sure you are ready to wipe the phone (backup any files you may want from it - possibly nothing in your case).
---------- Post added at 12:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:10 PM ----------
Also, on the phone's Settings, scroll to the bottom. Do you see a category for "Developer's Options"?
If so, tap it and make sure USB Debugging is selected.

I won't be available tonight. So I'll give the whole rundown, and you can work on it when you get a chance. If you run into issues, I unfortunately won't be able to help until tomorrow morning.

Great, great. All good news so far!
Connect the phone to your computer.
Run the Toolkit and choose the option to relock the bootloader.
This is the point where the phone will be wiped, so backup anything you want before you do this.
Reboot the phone into bootloader. Once in bootloader, if the relock was successful, you will see RELOCKED near the top instead of UNLOCKED.
The phone will always say RELOCKED in bootloader once UNLOCKED, from here on out. There is a process to make it LOCKED, but its even more complicated and in my opinion not required for what you are doing.
Next, you want to download the RUU (ROM update utility) which is essentially a full recovery image. Relocking the bootloader was required to make the RUU run. Download from the link at the bottom of the page:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
Then follow the instruction on that same webpage under "Manual system update instructions"
Basically, the RUU is a .exe which will re-image the phone to stock. Its very self-explanatory and as long as the bootloader is RELOCKED and you have USB connectivity, it will do its job, and you will be DONE.
My opinion, the friend you are selling the phone to should still be aware it was at one time bootloader unlocked and rooted. Keeping in mind that HTC has a record of the bootloader being unlocked, and the warranty through HTC may be void. Don't know if the warranty through AT&T themselves is transferable? But if so, AT&T actually doesn't care if the phone has been modded, and will still honor the warranty for 1 year.
Aside from the HTC record that the phone was bootloader unlocked, and the RELOCKED flag in bootloader, the phone will be full stock; and should also receive OTA updates if connected to the AT&T network.

Thank you for all your help and expertise in this area. I will definitely try this tonight. Cross your fingers! I will post tonight whether successful or failed. Thank you again!

Good luck!

[Q] Please HELP. May have fully bricked phone

So here is the short of it:
Was having some issues with Sprint on my EvOLtE rooted with unlocked bootloader on fresh 5.1.1 rom. They were unable to use any of the ##blablabla# commands on my phone to refresh my data connection. So I wiped and restored the stock ROM back up I had made. Still no go for the ##blablabla# commands so I was going to do a full factory reset and go from there. Well in the process, It seems I wipe out everything (system partition) as well as any backups that were saved to the internal sd card. So I read up and watched some vids posted and was going to try the full RUU to get it back to stock. I used ADB to relock the bootloader, and went to run the RUU. Well it will not see the phone as connected since there is no system files and no OS on the phone. And now that the bootloader is locked I have no access to recovery to try to flash anything, and can't run RegawMOD to re-unlock bootloader for the same reason as unable to to run RUU, no OS on phone to see connection. Can anyone please help?
Solution found:
per a responce from regaw_leinad The RUU does work from fastboot usb and is recognized and will run.

power off your phone and then hold power+vol down to get into the bootloader. from there click fastboot and then once there click fastboot usb and it should come up as a disk drive. drag and drop an ruu on there and flash from the bootloader
edit: nvm i lied thats how it worked on the original evo 4g. idk how to do it on this phone. sorry... :/

Yea, No fastboot usb on this device. If Is there is some how I can get PJ75DIAG.zip extracted from the RUU, then maybe then I could flash the PJ75DIAG.zip through the bootloader.

you might be able to get one of the developers such as regaw_leinad to try to help you with that. im not exactly sure how you would extract it but even harder would be making it flashable via bootloader.
Yea, I was gonna try to send him a pm but I don't think I have enough post to allow me to. When I tried, it just showed my sent box as empty. Any idea how may one needs to get that privilege? Or could you hit him up and send him my way. Thanks for addressing my op and giving your feed back, I appreciate it.

[GUIDE] S-ON After S-OFF | Back to Completely Stock!

Do you currently have a bootloader that is S-OFF (thanks to LazyPanda/DirtyRacun)?
Do you need to take your phone into Sprint for repairs, and want to set it to S-ON again?
This guide will show you EXACTLY how to go from S-OFF to S-ON again. Not only that,
but it will be like you just got your phone brand new from Sprint again, ***LOCKED*** and S-ON.
This sure looks like a lot of steps, but it's not really. I've just detailed everything out
so there is no confusion.
This process wipes your phone completely including internal storage (internal sdcard).
It does NOT wipe your external sdcard (the one you physically put in the device).
Requirements
Download one of the following bullet points:
1.13.651.1 RUU - MIRROR (Windows ONLY) - af533d16d6131c7bbd4ef281441cc096
PJ75IMG.zip (External Sdcard Required) - a429f8150560433c264887e3d85ba368
And also download the RegawMOD S-ON Writer Utility (Windows ONLY - SOURCE) - 05d6800bd66f7a9150f64fd203230ccf
Steps
This guide assumes that you have either the HTC drivers from my rooter
or LazyPanda S-OFF installed (since you used them to gain S-OFF/root).
Charge you battery to above 50% (preferably fully charged)
Make sure your phone is connected to the computer and make sure Settings > Developer options > USB debugging is checked on your device.
If you would like to skip making a nandroid backup, skip now to Step #10 if you downloaded the RUU, or Step #11 for the PJ75IMG.zip
Reboot to recovery. If you don't know how to do that, download my RegawMOD Rebooter and use that.
Press "Mount" and make sure the following are checked on
Unmount Cache
Unmount SDCard
Unmount Internal
Using external SDCard (this is vital, because the following process wipes your internal sdcard)
Press the back button to get to the main menu.
Press "Backup" and swipe the slider to the right to begin your nandroid backup.
Once complete, press "Back" to go to the main menu.
Press "Reboot" then "System" to reboot back into Android.
If you'd like to backup the nandroid to your computer, do that now by mounting your sdcard to your computer and copying it over.
If you downloaded the PJ75IMG.zip instead of the RUU, skip to Step #11 NOW
Now it's time to run the RUU on your computer. Double click on the exe to run. The following tells you what to do on each screen of the RUU
Check the box next to "I understand the caution indicated above and have reviewed the ReadMe." then click "Next"
Check the box next to "I have completed the steps indicated above" then click "Next"
Click "Update"
Click "Next"
Click "Next". The RUU will begin to update your phone
This process will take ~10 minutes and sometimes up to 20. Be patient!
Click "Finish" when it completes. Once complete, your phone will begin to boot into Android.
Now skip to Step #17
Copy the PJ75IMG.zip you downloaded onto your external SDCard. You can either:
Select Disk Drive mode instead of Charge Only from your device's drop down menu. Then select Charge Only again once it's done copying.
Remove your sdcard and put it in a card reader in your computer (put it back in the phone after)
(Advanced) Run the command 'adb push PJ75IMG.zip /sdcard/ext_sd/'
Power your device completely off. (We are preparing to boot into the bootloader)
Hold Volume-Down and Power until it boots into the bootloader.
This make take a few tries to get into the bootloader, it's finiky.
The 3 button LED's will flash a few times, this is normal.
The "Enable Fastboot" option in Settings > Power has nothing to do with booting into the bootloader (even though many think it does)
The PJ75IMG.zip will automatically start being read. This takes a LONG time (up to 20 minutes depending on sdcard speed).
When it asks you if you want to flash, press Volume-Up to accept. This will also take up to 20 minutes to flash.
Your device may reboot a few times as well, this is normal. The only downside is that it has to reload the PJ75IMG.zip again. Again, normal.
When it's completely finished flashing and prompts you, press the Power button to reboot the device.
Once it's fully booted, skip all of the setup details by pressing "Next"/"Skip" and enable USB Debugging (See Step #2).
You can sign in to things if you want, just for time sake I say to skip it here.
Go into Settings > Developer options and check USB debugging (make sure it's on)
Now it's time to run the RegawMOD S-ON Writer Utility you downloaded to your computer earlier
After double clicking the exe, you will be asked if you want to run the utility. Type either y or Y and hit enter to accept.
It will run automatically and tell you what it's doing along the way.
If there are any errors, it will tell you as well.
You may get an extra reboot after it writes S-ON, it's normal.
You may get the Hands-Free-Activation pop up as well, that's normal as well.
If the RegawMOD S-ON Writer Utility runs all the way through without errors, you are now fully stock! Congrats!
You now have S-ON and ***LOCKED*** on your bootloader and there is no way to prove that it wasn't!
Post any questions here, or join me in #RegawMOD on irc.freenode.net - WEBCHAT

Ok, thanks! Just wanted to be sure there were no ill-effects from locking on modded version.
If you try to re-lock the bootloader BEFORE flashing back to a stock hboot you will PERMANENTLY brick your phone. Just do everything in the order the OP has it. I relocked following this post exactly and it worked just fine.

EDIT: Actually, never mind. You are right, I guess that since LazyPanda changes it to just ---LazyPanda--- instead of ***Locked***, you wouldn't need to relock before running the RUU since it technically isn't considered unlocked anymore.

I need some help, and as I always say I don't ask for help unless I really can't find a solution. I tried unlocking my bootloader using the HTCDev method, but when I try to flash the unlock code bin file it gets stuck saying its sending and never moves. Same happened weeks back with my HTC Mytouch 4g Slide and I had somehow got it to work after fiddling here and there. I have HTC Sync uninstalled (I even reinstalled it to uninstall it again and keep the drivers) and I even eliminated my PDANet which seems to cause issues in situations like this. Rebooted my computer literally over 10 Times, same bull. I just can't remember how I got it working on my MyTOUCH. SO...I'm on hboot 2.09 and was wondering if these files would downgrade the hboot or something. All drivers seem to be proper, so I don't see why I'm having issues. I'm familiar with the adv and fastboot tools, I even made the android folder on the main harddrive directory that every post recommends , have the unlock_code.bin there but its the issue of not pushing. I have an old PC but if it worked on my MyTOUCH at one point I doubt it has anything to do with it.
So I wanted to know if its possible to downgrade the hboot to use a different method.
The method of rooting the phone is the same regardless of Hboot, so downgrading won't help you. Click the link in my sig and go to the section that contains the bootloader unlocking tools. Click on the WinDroid toolkit and see if you have any luck with that, instead.

Not root, unlocking the bootloader. It says Sending and never does a thing. It should say Okay immediately after pushing the file but its not doing anything for me. Its supposed to quickly give you a disclaimer on your phone to select whether or not to unlock the BL, but all my phone does is sit in fastboot mode. So I wanted to know if these stock restore things can downgrade the HBOOT as well so I can unlock it in a different manner instead of HTCDev's method. I've been stuck with a locked bootloader for a week since purchasing this phone. My MyTouch4g slide had the same issue but I had done something that got it going, in this case, I've tried everything. Also these self made executable programs like WinDroid give me a "not a valid Win32 application" message on my laptop. They just won't run at all.

There is no other method to unlock the bootloader aside from HTC Dev. Doesn't matter what Hboot version you're on or what software version you have. Even programs like regaw_leinad's toolkit uses HTC Dev-it just automates the entire process.

Hmm come to think of it your right I have seen the scripts mention HTCDev. So what can I do to get it to flash that Unlock_code.bin? HTC Sync is uninstalled, PDANet is also gone, the drivers have been left behind. My device does show up as a fastboot device and the Device Manager shows the phone as MyHTC when on fastboot, what am I missing? Its all set but just stays there...

You did get the email from HTC with the unlock token and place it in your ADB tools folder, right?

No LOL went outside for a second. I would definitely let you help, BUT I'm using an OLD Dell laptop. So old I think cavemans existed when it was invented. My HP is in repair. Bought it new, came faulty, sent for repair. Came back, new issues, right back to HP, so I'm using this wifiless crap for now. I haven't bothered buying it a WiFi adaptor since its so darn old. I mean what can be done with 128mb of ram? Imagine.
It has USB 1.0 ports, I read some discussions that it maybe the case, but the same was said about my old MyTouch 4G Slide and the token went thru eventually.

Yes I even sent the code a second time to make sure the file didn't magically get corrupted.

anyway, you can flash it just like described for the radio:
-place phone in fastboot, open cmd. file must be in your adb/fastboot working directory
-enter:
fastboot erase cache
fastboto oem rebootRUU (will put you in ruu mode, black screen silver htc letters)
fastboot flash zip zipfilename.zip (will send and flash the file. dont interupt it while the cmd window shows its writinging, and the green status bar is moving on the phone screen)
*sometimes a file will fail with a pre-update error after after flashing hboot, radios or other firmware. this is normal, just enter again:
fastboot flash zip zipfilename.zip
and this time it will finish
-when you get "finished" and "OK"
fastboot reboot-bootloader (takes you back to fastboot. should also rescue you if for some reason the file wont flash)
-reboot back to the OS
fastbooot reboot

I used this instruction with the RUU file on this thread and I was able to get back to stock but bootloader is still Unlocked and S-OFF.
Anyone knows how to turn back S-ON?

Just Flip the Flag. You can use Scott1223's Thread on changing the flag.
It doesn't Lock the device again but it does report locked on the Bootloader fastboot mode. This has been enough for warranty reasons for Verizon.

I have GUI for Verizon/Sprint versions on Stock Rom.

Can you please stop telling people it does not lock the bootloader. I have quoted the text below in reply to you at least once before. Setting the flag back to "Locked" does tell the bootloader to be locked. It is not just displaying locked. Someone is going to try to modify something thinking their bootloader isnt truly locked after accomplishing the below when it is.
scotty1223 said:
not sure what youre asking. locked is locked... this leaves the "lock status" flag that tells hboot wether to be unlocked or not, in a locked state, just as it came out of the box.
if you mean "does the lock status flag need to tell hboot to be locked in order for the fingerprint scanner to work" then the answer is yes. hex editing hboot to make the unlocked banner read "locked" does absolutely nothing functionally. whatever partition controls the fingerprint scanner is looking at the lock status flag itself, and could care less what hboots banner reads

Let's attack this from another angle.
S-OFF = Secure Bootloader = Accessing Partitions normally not accessible (i.e. Radio and Hboot partition access) Flips the Hex code of the Bootloader Flag to Unlocked
Bootloader Flag = Bootloader hex code used by internal device partitions to determine device hardware compliance and functionality.
First off s-off does NOT equal unsecure bootloader (which Im assuming is what you meant). They are separate and distinct. You must s-off to be able to unlock the bootloader.

If you would like to discuss further please take this to PM.
This is a dev forum and discussions like this should happen in the thread to which it pertains. I cant be the only one that will want to know this very important piece of information and its background. Scotty has noted he will reply later time permitting. I am ok with being wrong based on my understanding and information provided but this needs to be out there.
This is not complicated. There is a locked/unlocked flag, and a secure/insecure flag for S-Off.
They are not the same. You need to turn both to get back to stock.
I have not tried going back to S-On, but I do lock/unlock frequently.
The fingerprint scanner stops working when unlocked, and I cannot fastboot flash certain things to test when locked.
As for how you get either of these to be in either state, yes, that is a topic for another thread.
Is it possible for me to use the Verizon RUU to convert my Sprint One max to Verizon stock software similar to how people are able to convert the HTC one to Google Play edition?
Hopefully they want delete this thread.
Also what does it mean when you say decrypted.

I'm by no means am a developer, but this is accurate. I had the HTC Incredible and sold it on Craigslist a few years later. To restore it to complete stock, I had to use the Stock RUU, lock the bootloader, and turn S-On. However, I've heard of some people buying a brand new device with S-Off from the factory. Both of my HTC devices were S-On. I used rumrunner to S-Off my One Max and Revoked to S-Off my original Incredible.
With that said, is there a guide/tool to turn S-On with our One Max? Just for information purposes.

You're rooted. Run RUU tool to unroot and go back to complete stock. TWRP is the recovery menu and the gateway to flashing new roms and kernels etc.

Okay so i downloaded and unzipped, The instructions on the thread are very vague
So I think i need to use a backdoor or something cause I can't get my phone to boot into android
Quote:
Q: But what if I can't get into Android?? Surely there is something I can do!?
A: Yes, I designed a "backdoor" to allow you into VipeRUU. However, BE CAREFUL! This skips important checks that VipeRUU does when it start (most importantly, if your phone really is an EVO 4G LTE!) but it will allow you to do this procedure from the bootloader. All you have to do is create a text file in the "files" folder called "bypass.txt" and then start the program. You'll be alerted with a few warnings when doing this.
Also do I need to have the phone plugged into the computer or something. I am so sorry but I am very lost

I've never done this process myself, but I'll do my best to help you.
First: reboot into your bootloader, Hold down power key with volume down key until it reboots into the screen where you listed all that information. It should have a white bacground.
Second: Naviagte to fastboot and hit the pwoerkey
Third: Connect computer to phone with usb
Fourth: create a blank bypass.txt file and place into the file named "file" from the zip you downloaded.
Fifth: Run ViperRUU and select whichever option you need.

Are you running windows? Open up a command prompt and try to get su access through fastboot. You may not have high enough privleges. Also, do you have HTC drivers installed? Once you're inside the fastboot menu, don't touch anything. The reading on the top should say "Fastboot USB"

Do what BD619 says. I had hoped ViperRUU would work, but the stock HTC one is much easier to use and operate. Also I usually use Ubuntu in these situations due to how much easier it is to work things in Terminal than it is to use Window's command prompt. Just a thought in case you ever need to do something fastboot related in the future.
