I note that the N6 is supposed to offer Qi, but the curved back suggests it might have a problem fitting into existing N5/N7 chargers. I held off buying the NeXus charger for this reason. Have note 3 Qi which curves, but may not be big enough for N6

Let's read the question and not just topics, okey?
I honestly don't think there will be a problem. If it's magnetic it will stick where the charging area is. If you look at the design of the phone, and have ever held the Moto X 2014, the phone still lays down on a flat spot. It just happens to set near the dimple area. The entire back doesn't touch the surface when you set it on its back, but a good portion does, well big enough for the typical contact patch of most Qi chargers. On another note, I find the Qi charger they came out with for the N5 to be TERRIBLE. It looks really sweet but it is very fickle how you set a device, especially if it has a case on it. It was nigh impossible to align my N7 on it. I actually have a much easier time using the Nexus Qi charging puck they sold with the Nexus 4, even with the N7. The combination between surface friction, and the magnets in the device make it a cinch and I don't have to be as precise.
On a side note, what's another 2A+ Qi charger out there that has a decent contact patch?
You are probably better off getting a Tylt Vu or Itien A6 with three coils and a lip to sit it against if you need a case that can rest the phone at an angle. With the curved back, I don't see how a magnetic charger would hold the phone well enough.

Qi actually CAN do more than 1A via the latest standard, via the Medium power profile. It's not intended for phones, though, it's for things like laptops and tablets. There aren't any medium profile devices on the certification list yet, and even if there were a charger that supports it, the phone would need to be set up for it as well. The Nexus 6 is a low power certified device, so if you set it on a medium power charger it would still only work at 1A.
Marques Brownlee couldn't get his Nexus 6 to charge on last year's Nexus qi charger. He talks about it at 11:00 into his review.

well, the document @amaddux linked says that the Nexus 6 should be placed on the charger 2.5" from the bottom of the phone.... and judging by his video, it seemed like he was targeting more around the middle of the phone. Then again... this also doesn't really give me much hope for the idea of magnets, since if he was in the ballpark, i'm sure we'd have seen some sign in that video of it wanting to gravitate towards a certain area.

I would say that 2.5" from either end of a 6.27" phone would be close enough to the center and definitely in the ballpark. I am hoping that the battery life is adequate to safely cruise through a busy day without the need to charge until I get home. Then the extra money for a wireless charger wouldn't be justified as far as I am concerned.
N6 vs. AirDock 1.0
I just got a Nexus 6 last week and today tried to put it on my AirDock (as the OP has one). The device definitely does have magnets in it as I can feel them grab when I get close to the AirDock, but the curved back means you don't get perfect contact against the AirDock. I have my AirDock mounted on my desk at work so I can use my phone as a desk clock (had been using the N5 for quite a while) with Desk Clock Plus. While the N6 sits on the AirDock the way I have it set up, I wouldn't trust it to hold it in a moving bouncing vehicle as designed.
NOTE: There is a new AirDock 2.0 available now that offers a special curved surface specifically for the N6. Only problem is it's $99 (gasp). I'm thinking about driving over there (the creator of the AirDock lives in my home town) and talking to him about potential refits for us original AirDock backers.
(I tried to link to the airdockplus page that talks about the N6, but apparently I haven't got enough posts to be able to include links. I only post when I have something to say, but apparently volume of posting is the limiting factor.)
Responding to my own thread here with an update. I'm still rockin the N5 as I just don't have a compelling reason to upgrade. I bought the AirDock back in June of last year. In October it stopped working, so they shipped me a replacement. Just last week, that replacement stopped working (in a different way), and now they are offering a small discount off the obnoxiously priced Air Dock 2.0.
The quality of these things just doesn't match the price tag. I'm at a failure rate of > 2 per year, at this pace it's going to cost me more in chargers than I paid for the phone.
There are not any magnets in the nexus 6. There are iron or steel areas around the Qi coil in a square. 2 top, 2 bottom with it centered around the "e" at roughly 1 inch from center. Strangely the internal coil is centered at the bottom of the "u" , closest to the "x" . Imagine that the leg of the "u" is the horizontal cross hair of a scope.
I use Scosche mounts and ones that I have made. I use 2 strontium magnets stacked with 2 layers of regular clear package tape between them. (this is much stronger) Then I just wrap it with 10 mil tape each side leaving a tab to help pull it off. Works great on gym equipment so that I don't need a stupid, scratchy arm band holder. Under my TPU case I use a 3/4 knockout from a steel electric box and add 3M double sided tape. I place the plate up towards the top as high as possible covering the "M".
YES, it is thicker than the thin plates but the smaller high mass steel holds better and it is flat. The nexus 6 is so big already I don't notice a couple millimeters.
Now to the real subject: Qi charging. This works with the single coil plates. I am working on adding a sturdy magnet to the top of mine to grip the 3/4 knockout slug. BTW I filed the slug down to be more flat and loose the sharp edges. It doesn't get hot. With the Elite kernel and fast charge enabled it seems to charge at about 70-50% as well as the USB, typically about 0.8a. Perfect for normal keep it topped off charge.

Just received my Air Dock in the mail and I've had mixed results using my Galaxy Note 3 with it. So rather than buying more cases and QI adapters, throwing stuff at the wall hoping something sticks, I thought we could all band together to find the best setup. This should be a thread for people to post their experiences and post links to the cases and wireless charging adapters they are using with the Air Dock and their GN3.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Air Dock, it's a new Indiegogo backed vehicle mount that employs nano-suction and QI wireless charging. It essentially uses a bunch of tiny suction cups (and some magnets apparently) to bond to your phone with out needing any kinds of harnesses or clips. The only issue seems to be that this tech requires some specific stuff to function well. The back of the phone needs to be high gloss plastic for it to stick well and it can't be too thick (i think .8mm is the max for it to still charge). For phones with matte backs (like the Nexus 5) magnets are an option.

Case: Black Cruzerlite Hybrid Case for Samsung Galaxy Note 3
-Same deal, it sticks to it but it's not inspiring confidence. It's not a high gloss back, so that's probably the issue (bought it well before the Air Dock). The dock also comes with a magnet sticker to place between the case and phone, and that helps but I haven't been able to get it to register a charge at all with the case on.
QI adapter: Wireless Qi Power Receiver Car Charger NFC For Samsung Note 3 N9000 N9005 BC279
-I think this is the part that has created the biggest issue. It's only ever recognized the charger a handful of times, with and without the back cover on. And even when it recognizes it, it just flashes the "now wireless charging" dealy and then goes back to discharging immediately. I know that the adapter works because it charges fine on my desktop QI charging pad.

Not exactly. If i put it on there with no case and like 15 degrees of back lean it holds decently. The backplate isn't as glossy as it needs to be to hold securely though. It's capable of it, they've shown it holding the various Nexus tablets.
That's kind of what this thread is about, trying to find out the best combination of accessories to make this thing work correctly.

i'm still waiting on my airdock, but regarding the QI receiver insert charging/discharging deal, have you tried to rotate the airdock 90 degrees? I've ran across QI chargers where orientation matters.

Hmm. I think that's worth a shot. The dock is weird in that the ball joint faces a specific direction, which is different than the prototypes I saw. And if what you say is true, mounting it on the windshield would make the dock upside down. I'll give that a go when I go to my car in the AM.

an easier way is to not move the dock, and just rotate your phone 90 degrees (vertical vs. horizontal), and see if that helps with the wireless charging.

The receiver you have is not a very good one, its rather weak, i had to add another ferrite or flexi magnet to it so that most of my other transmitter can detect it, but if nfc is a must, you have no choice.

Would also like to report back on the docks performance today. I had my phone on it (in the case) all day with just a small amount of back lean. It held strong on the drive to and from bwork. I also went for some drinks after work and it held strong to and from along a fairly bumpy road. I still want to find a glossy back case but my confidence is growing in the nano suction as is.
I also wanted to report that I put my old Galaxy S1 in it (only phone I have with a glossy back) and it held just like it does in the videos.

I received my items 2 days ago (I have 2 as a friend also ordered one) and test them with 2 Nexus 4 :
Concerning the suction, it's definitily very very good with the N4 and no case, clearly, no risk to have the phone fall while driving !
So, that was the good news ...
The bad one is that the charging is very unreliable on both airdock pads, but with differents effects :
On the first one, it's very difficult for it to be seen charging by the phone, but when it does, it work for several minutes ... and stop working without apparent reasons ...
On the second one, I experiment the same kind of symptoms as described in the first post : the wireless charging is only seen by the phone for something like 1/2s, and then it's off ...
That's quite a disppointment as otherwise, it holds the phone just fine in the car and I found it very convenient. I hope I was just unlucky with mines, or maybe they suffer from transport (the package shows no evidence of it yet ...).
I contacted Greg, the guy from theAirdock.com to have his advices on the matter, but no answer so far ... I was wondering if I'm the only experimenting those issues ?

You're not the only one, I had similar issues with my Note 3 (actually why I started this thread). I ended up contacting Greg as well and he recommended I purchase a Qi adapter from their site, which did make it function much more reliably. It's acceptable in my opinion at this point but I'm still not 100% sure it's going to charge or stay charging anytime I set it on the AirDock.
Bad news is, my solution isn't really an option with the N4 since (i believe) the wireless charging is built in. I do believe that the Qi charger in the AirDock is generally weak though since I tried about 3 different Qi adapters before finally buying the one from the AirDock site that worked. Otherwise it would do exactly what yours is doing (got both of the things you described with different adapters). I would say try to exchange your docks.
Something that works for me sometimes if it doesn't start charging right away is to unplug the USB cable from the lighter socket side and plug it back in. Also be sure that you are plugged into the 2.1A socket that it comes with, as i found it won't work with the standard 1A plugs most people have laying around.
I really love the concept of the AirDock and I'm glad I backed it but the build quality is certainly suspect. Mine is starting to fall apart after only a few months (the suction pad part is starting to separate from the housing, i can only assume because of how the phone has to be pulled to remove). I think this is par for the course with beta hardware though. Fortunately, customer service was very accommodating in my experience. Hope you're as fortunate.

I had ne feedback from Greg sincemy email yesterday, but I figure they may be quite busy those days as many people seems to be receiving them.
Well, I hope he will provide a solution, because, for one of the two, with the same symptoms as yours, I can believe it's a problem with positionning, but for the other, the phone start charging for a few minutes and, without it moving, stops ... To me it sounds more like a loose contact somewhere inside the airdock ...

Any word on how this works with the Note 3's stock "leather" textured back? Is a case required for it to stay?
Also, has anybody tried it with the Samsung brand wireless charger cover? The Air Dock website suggests that the Samsung brand cover is the best wireless charger receiver available; even better than the ones that Air Dock sells.

I thought for sure I had already posted this response. I ended up getting an AirDock and the OEM Samsung Wireless charging cover for my Note 3. It's been a good setup. I'm not using the ugly sticker. The magnets in the AirDock seem to hold on to some metal in the wireless cover. It isn't as good as a smooth backed device, but it works for the most part. I'm glad I bought it.

One way to get a smoother back and increase the adhesion on the AirDock while avoiding the thickness of a case is to get a vinyl wrap although I'm not sure how they would go with the Samsung wireless back since it looks like the shape especially around the camera is slightly different. I have a D-Brand skin on my Nexus 5 and I really love it and it makes the back even smoother. I just got a Note 4 yesterday and have ordered a third-party Qi receiver coil so I'll see how that goes first. Looks like SlickWraps has some nice vinyl skins for the Note 3 and 4.
Also want to report that yesterday I tried my Note 4 with the AirDock using the standard back. At first it did not adhere at all. However I noticed that surface of my AirDock charging pad was pretty dusty. For my Nexus 5 I had been relying mostly on the magnets to hold the phone there. So I cleaned the AirDock with a bit of water as they recommend and the Note 4 holds very securely now. I think if I add a vinyl skin or a very thin case I think it would be even more secure.
Looking for a good car mount with wireless charging that will work with the nexus 6 any recommendations?
I'd recommend not using one. Wireless charging will be way to slow on the n6.

used the square stock wireless charger with my n5, stuck a clip to the back of it and just relied on the magnets to hold it. Didn't wiggle at all, never fell off, was perfect, wish I could rig the same thing with the N6, but I don't think the magnets will be near strong enough.
A qi charge is going to charge at 1a at most, for he N5 that was more than enough to cover full brightness, gps, and streaming over bluetooth, and still providing enough to charge the battery. I IMAGINE if you could somehow hook it up like that, it would provide enough of a charge to the N6 as well, at worst I think you'd not lose charge. JMHO though.
So if you not recommending the wireless charge on it then do the sell a fast charge adapter for the car? Really the main thing is a good car dock. I figured the wireless charge would just be a plus.
I've been using the Airdock with my Nexus 5 for a while now and I absolute LOVE it. It uses magnets to hold the N5 in place, and I'm hoping the N6 also has these magnets. It also has a special surface that is supposed to hold certain phones without magnets, depending on the material of the back of the phone.
Also as far as the speed of charging, it works well enough to slowly charge my N5 with the screen always on in my car and with GPS running (at a minimum, it keeps it from losing charge). This is all I need in my car. On those certain occasions where you really want a faster charge, I just plug it in.
Let us know if it works with N6. Can you have a slim case on the phone an the magnet still works?
Got my N6 today. Unfortunately it doesn't work with the AirDock, as it doesn't stay on it. Looks like the N6 doesn't have any magnets. Very disappointing.

I just ran a magnet all over the back of the N6. There is indeed some type of magnetic pull in the bottom corner, however, it is EXTREMELY weak. I'm guessing it's there to maybe help nudge the phone into the correct position when laying flat on a (future official?) qi charger, but it is absolutely not enough to hold it onto the AirDock. By way of comparison, the magnetic pull with the magnet is much stronger, and over a much greater area, on the N5.
Also, the N6 is a lot heavier than the N5. Add the curved back into the equation, and these 3 factors pretty much guarantee the phone won't work with the AirDock. Believe me, I tried to get it to stick on the AirDock today, and there's no way it's happening.
iOttie Qi charger works. You've got to find the sweet spot to have it grasp the side, without hitting the volume buttons, and still getting the charging coils aligned. Not super difficult - just takes a second to align. I expect this to be irrelevant once I get a case which keeps the buttons recessed.

Anyone who's using a QI car dock have any input on charging / maintaining charge with screen always on, brightness up, streaming music, maps, etc.
I'm just curious if the iOttie or any other wireless chargers can avoid LOSING charge with the N6 when under "heavy" use.
One problem I find is you can't keep the screen on when wirelessly charging once the battery is at 100%. The phone stops charging so the screen goes off. Very annoying hopefully someone can find a fix.

The "Stay Awake" option in the Developer Options should be what you're looking for.
No that doesn't work when the phone is fully charged because the N6 doesn't have trickle mode it actually shuts off charging. Thus the screen shuts off.
My Homebrew Wireless Car Charging Solution
I made my own wireless car charger by grafting a PowerBot charging puck onto a Ram Large X-Grip. I simply used double-faced tape to attach the PowerBot to the X-Grip. I started this with my Nexus 5 in a Spigen Neo-Hybrid case and it works just as well with my N6 inside a Diztronic Slim TPU case.

This works great for calls, navigation, or as a dash-cam. Ram makes suction cups for those who want to mount directly to the windshield but I highly recommend the Mirror-Mate(TM).
Not cheap, total cost about $70 plus shipping.

Right now the 4 rubber grippers are flush with the front of the phone, which makes it a bit finicky to mount securely. The Anker charging pad is about 1/8" thinner than the PowerBot, which will accommodate the thickness of the phone perfectly with about 1/8" of overlap between the 4 grippers and the bezel of the N6. Putting the N6 in the X-Grip without the charger in-between leaves the 4 grippers protruding above the bezel about 3/8" which means they can get in the way if I'm trying to use the touchscreen near them.

I used double-faced mounting tape between the X-Grip and charger. The cable is 1m long.

Hey guys!
Thought I would post a review for this Qi wireless car charger since I didn't see much info about it and help those in deciding one for their car.
I have been using this Qi wireless car charger for about 4 months. The weather here is summer now so the car interior does get super hot, and so far this charger has been working like a champ in the heat.
The charger comes with a bunch of accessories which include:
-Vent adapter holder
-Traditional suction cup stand holder for dashboards
-Micro Usb cable
-Usb car chager (1 input)
-Sticky pads for wire management
I used the suction cup on my dash since my vents in my car are not ideal for my setup. The Qi charger is made hard sturdy black plastic and the section where you place your phone is made of a softer grippy rubber that holds the Nexus 6 very well. There is button on the back that release the two arm clamps. The Nexus 6 being a big of a device I thought it would be a tight fit, but I am happy to report that there is plenty of space. I have a Caseology Case and still a bit of extra room on the dock. So for those with thicker cases than mine can still fit, but in terms of it charging through a thicker case is something I do not have to test, but for those familiar with my case which I will put a link on the bottom of this post, my phone charges perfectly fine with it. Also the Qi charging unit in this has a 3 coil system so placement is not an issue and wireless charging is maximized and efficient as possible. There is a LED light on the bottom that indicates if it idle or charging, Green means idle and Blue means charging. The cradle of the charger is very sturdy and holds the Nexus with ease, have not had it drop my phone (yet) and hopefully stays that way. I use the charger everyday for the past 4 months and yet to encounter an issue, remember I am using it 95 degree weather for the past 4 months and it has not died on me yet. Once winter comes I will update on how it handles the cold, hopefully like a champ as it does in the summer! I attached some pictures for everyone to have a better look at it. Overall I am very happy with this charger and highly recommended!

If you mean having the suction cup on the windows then yes it works even better cause the surface on the glass gives it an even better grip.
So for the sake of full disclosure, prior to becoming a CHOE Tech product reviewer, I was already an owner of 2 of their products. The Qi Wireless Charging pad (Model T513) and the High power 6-port USB power adapter (Model C0041Q) which has 2 QC ports. Both are excellent products especially the hub. I find it invaluable. I have a number of devices but most often use a Motorola Nexus 6 for reviews.
CHOE Tech offered me a few different products. I chose to look at their new Qi Charger (Model T517) http://www.choetech.com/Circle-Qi-Wireless-Charger-with-Lightning-Sensor/ and their Foldable 19W Dual-Port Solar Charger with Auto Detect Technology (Model SC001) http://www.choetech.com/choetech-fordable-19w-dual-port-solar-panel-charger/. The Qi charger can be had on Amazon for $17.99 (list $30) and to review, I was given a code that knocked it down to a penny. The Solar panel lists for $100 and can be had on Amazon for $54.99. The code for a reviewer made this 50% off and cost me $27.49
First up the Qi Charger Model T517. Since I already had the other Model T513, I had something decent to compare it with. The new T517 is round, comes in a couple of colors, is approximately 3.5 inches in diameter, has a rubber foot and a rubber rim on top to keep your devices from sliding. Both the rubber foot and rim work well. The lighting is a subtle blue even at full brightness and with the lighting sensor that automatically adjusts based on the room conditions, makes it even better. Excellent for those that want the charger on a night table.
Charging. The normal recommendation with all Qi chargers is to charge them without a case. I prefer to use a case, and also prefer NOT to remove it. As such, I did some testing with and without the case. The case I have is a thin TPU case the Ringke Fusion from Rearth. I also used the app Ampere as a way to measure the output.
First, with all Qi chargers, finding the "sweet" spot is very important and also sometimes a real pain. Since the T517 is on the smaller side, I found matching the sweet spot to my NX6 a bit finicky. Once I had the right general area it took some wiggling to get the best output. Once I found the sweet spot on the phone, I also played with rotating the NX6 on the charger. In doing that I could also find the best spot on both devices. Doing that took some time and even so, was touchy at best.
Without the Ringke case, after finding the sweet spots, I could get Ampere up toward 700mA on the T517. With the case on I could get into the low 600mA area on the T517. I compared that to my T513 Qi charger. On the T513 without the case, I could get a little over 600mA consistently. With the case on, I stayed within the high 500's and hit 600 on occasion. Because the T513 is a more rectangular shape, finding the sweet spot every time is a ton easier.
Overall, I would recommend the new T517 but might suggest looking into the T518 since it has a higher output and should provide for higher output thus faster charging.

When I got my LG G3 and bought the Qi charging backplate for it, I immediately bought this charging mount for my car. With the LG, it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, the coils in the charger are too low for the Turbo 2 to get a charge (even though the charger itself lights up as if the phone is charging, I'm still experiencing battery drain, and the phone doesn't believe it's charging). If I put the phone in upside down, the phone charges, but then the arms of the holster are pressed against the side buttons.
Anyone have a better car Qi charging solution for the Turbo?

How far out does the arm extend? The Choetech came straight up from the suction cup base, and I have to reach forward a bit to reach the phone - enough so that it feels dangerous while driving on the highway.
I did manage to get the Choetech to start charging the phone by positioning the phone a little higher than normal in the holster, then moving it down, but if the iOttie charges easily from the default position I might consider that if I get some Amazon gift cards this year.

It extends for about 1.5 inches, far enough to be where I want it to be at. The lower supporting fork is adjustable. It can move up and down. So I was able to align wireless charging logo of the phone with the coils of the holder. Now I don't have to worry about the position of the phone when it is in the holder. I have two of them, for my wife and myself. And we are both satisfied. There are some videos on that Amazon page about this product. You can check them out.

Thanks for describing this -- I had been concerned about getting something like this precisely because I was worried about positioning so that 1) the coils would line up with the phone's charging "sweet spot" and 2) the side buttons wouldn't be blocked. Have the bottom support adjustable addresses that beautifully.

Likewise. Also, the arm extending out slightly puts the phone closer to me, and on my car that would make it as close as the vent clip on the Choetech was.

How are you keeping yours sticky? I've washed mine as recommended, my G2 kept falling off it with with the magnetic sticker on my case, don't feel safe with the DT2 because it's heavier.

This is my first phone with wireless charging.
Could someone let me know why QI charging in a car would be preferable to cradle with a built in charger.
I have been using Pro Clip car docks for the last 5 years (3 phones and 2 SUVs) and am happy with them.
I disassembled the USB charger portion of my dock for my old Note3 while I wait for my backordered DT2 cradle to come.
If Qi is better I can cancel my order and get something different.
I see no drain while running Waze and listening to Audio Books though bluetooth. Additionally I mount an NFC tag on there to activate phone actions when I dock my phone.
The charger is hard wired to my car and the mounting system has been rock solid and allows for my Amateur Radio faceplate to be mounted within easy reach right below the phone dock.
On the other hand, the drop in dock doesn't work with a case but they do have other options for universal mounts.

After reading this thread weeks ago, I got this car mount. It is excellent. Works flawlessly and I love not having to connect a cord every time I get in the truck. The push on and one touch release is smooth too.
I was hoping to move from my old window mount spot to the center console but the gap wasn't wide enough for the extra dash mount pad. It is just barely wide enough for the regular suction mount but it doesn't form a complete seal and fell when I tried it. Still the window mount has worked for me for years and this mount comes out a little further than my old bionic mount so that's a big plus.
