Ok so I LOVE Windows Phone 7.5, the Radar, and Zune Music Pass. But who thought it would be a smart idea to give us only 8GB to store XBox Live Games, Unlimited Music, and all these rich apps? I would understand it if I could store music in the cloud like I can with pictures but after coming from Android with 16GB built in and a 32GB SD Card it feels like I am using a phone that was put on discount and sold to someone who didn't know any better (aka. iPhone 4 8GB).
Something has to be done about the issue with expandable memory on this OS or even with 16GB (let's not forget we have Movies on the Zune Market) it still leaves me feeling constrained. Even if we don't get expandable memory, witch I am fine with, give us 32GB and 64GB options on whatever will replace the Radar.
Love the phone but even with all the positive when I am already at 2GB left with less than a week of use I am starting to worry and wanting to return it because of this one set back.
Well I suppose you're big enough to read and think before you buy something
As un insightful as that was I knew the limit I just didnt think the impact would be this noticeable.

I've had a DVP with 8GB of storage for over a year and NEVER came close to filling her up. You don't need to store your entire music and video catalog on the device.
I thought the zune pass just lets you play music over the air and download 10 songs per month. Anyways, I think 8 gig is plenty for a phone, at least for me. + I think those limitations were the reason why it was bit cheaper. Usually it costs at least 450 for the phone without the contract.
i never understand why people would pay to download movie and watch on the phone? what happen to the 3k you spent on the home entertainment system.
8 gb is plenty for storing music and picture.
As a mp3 player it's pretty cramped. Obviously some can work within those boundaries. But especially if your music is stored in higher bitrates or lossless formats you are going to feel the pinch.
The fact is it's not designed to be an iPod. With Zune you have access to the entire Zune library all the time. The only music you need to store on the device are titles that Zune doesn't have, plus whatever you might need for offline listening (like on a plane).
Of course, that's asking people to completely change the way they think about "owning" and playing music. And it won't work for everyone. But that's the philosophy behind the design.

I agree, it's 2012, 8gb just doesn't cut it for the modern consumer anymore. I have a radar as my backup phone, since it was free. Now that my beloved HD2 has a broken digitizer, I'm using my radar. Nice phone, a lil small, but the 8 gigs is killing me, lol! Can't wait to fix my LEO and get back to more storage.
I just got this phone as well. And while I got it mainly for Xbox Live because i'm SUCH an achievement whore, I can't stand the fact it only has 8GB and NO SD EXPANSION. I mean Seriously? why the **** are we taking the iphone route here? It's kinda lame. The phone is nice but no SD Card Expansion is a Deal Breaker for me.
I have another Android Phone if I didn't have that one then I most defiantly would not have the radar.
I've had both a iPhone 4 with 8gb, and now the Radar. I have yet to come close to hitting the full amount of memory. The only problem I have seen when it came to limits, was an error in IE about my favorites, and not having enough space. But other then that, I'm content with my 8gb, and still have room for more music and movies.
Hopefully you can open up the phone and add a bigger SD card like the HD7. Only problem is, is that you'll risk voiding your warranty by opening the phone. I PERSONALLY DO NOT OWN THE RADAR SO I CAN'T TEST IT OUT.

8 GB is not enough for me as all of my music collection is MP3 320 kbps.
However, as soon as the Google Music player for WP7.5 is released, I will have lesser need for storing lots of MP3 on the phone.
I do love my HD2 with the 16 GB storage. 16 GB seems to be a good compromise between amount of storage needed and keeping price of a phone low.
8gb of storage is way too low. First is not even a full 8gb. Out of the box its something like 6.52gb. Then you install a couple app and games and you're only in the 5gb range. I downloaded my podcasts that keep me awake through the day and now I only have 2gb of data left for music. This was a poor decision on Microsoft's and the manufacturer's part.
After reviewing articles about the Radar, I decided to buy one. Now, I understood that the radar had 8GB of storage (btw, this is enough for me). But on my device it states 6.54GB Total Storage. Bit of noob question, What happened to the remaining 1.46 GB of storage?? Or is this normal?
Part of it is base 8 vs. base 10 math (1024 vs 1000) and the rest is allocated by the OS and OEM applications.

Sorry to be pedantic but it's base 2 (binary) vs base 10 (decimal).
2^10 = 1024
10^3 = 1000
Before I got my Radar, I had an HTC Trophy. The 8GB was just not cutting it, so I searched online and discovered that you could open it it up and replace the internal memory. The internal memory took form of a Micro-SD card. I replaced the stock 8GB with a 32GB. Restarted the phone and voila. It worked like a charm.
I'm hoping that this can be done on the Radar too, however there are a few of issues.
1. Unibody will make it quite painful to reach the internals.
2. Opening it up will void warranty.
3. A few on WPCentral forums have mentioned that the 2nd Gen WP Phones may have switched from internal flash memory to NAND memory?
I haven't heard it being done on the Radar. It might not be possible without de-soldering the flash chip.
It's the question around my head stopping me to click on the pre-order button.
I have a N1 and though struggling with the internal memory, can't see having more than maybe 1GB or 2 in apps. I get that with this i would install a lot more, but what, another 2 GB? Maybe even 4?. Maybe 4 more in Music. I guess i would put there some films or series to watch. Maybe add what... 4GB? 8? I have a spare 16GB SD card (for use with the dock, which would probably get the films or series) and probably will get a 16 or 32 microSD for the tablet itself. That would be, at least, 64Gb. If i get the 64Gb version, it would mean at least 96GB
Why getting then the 64GB? I'm serious, i would really like to know the reasons people are behind the 64gb version. It's not that i believe it's not necessary, it's that I'm probably missing something in the equation and i don't want to miss anything so i can make the right choice before regretting not buying the right one.

HD videos can get pretty dang big...10+ GB for 1080p (assuming bluray rip).
simple fact is HD video takes a lot of space. you put a few movies on at full res on the tablet, you'll soon see 64GB evaporate.
I have 32gb on my phone and am under constant pressure to swap things around because I don't have enough space.
I ordered the 64GB. Because I don't want any limitations and have to "worry" about if I have enough space.
And now when we have hardware that can handle high quality video 720p/1080p why don't use it. When you have gone HD you never want to go back to low resolution videos.
All movies/series I watch are 720p mkv.
4-7GB is one movie.
1-1.5GB is on serie episode
0.5-1GB is one game, and those will gets bigger now when they can be more advanced.
even apps will get bigger when they gets more advance.
So fast you will reached the 32GB mark.

All depends on your usage.
I keep around 20 gigs worth of music on my phone plus constantly swap out TV shows.
I got the 64gb version coming AND a 64gb microSD for it as well... I could easily see myself using the 64gb internal to fill up with pics and videos from the (from what it sounds like) great camera on the thing and have the microSD holding lots of videos, movies, ROMS etc... hell im lookin forward to the 2 terabyte microSD's!!

32GB Micro SD is about 60-70$ right now, 220$ for a 64GB. I want AT LEAST 64GB right now so I can dump all my music on it and use it instead of killing my data plan with Google Music. I'll end up getting a micro SD for it (64GB when they're a little more affordable anyways) so I can maximize the storage space on this thing. Games are huge, videos are huge. This thing takes pictures and video... why the hell not. What's 100$? You'll be paying more for the dock, but not for double the storage space? I think it's worth it.
64GB of local space is getting bigger and bigger the later we go into the future...
Look at Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Google Music, Pandora, etc. and you will see a lot of that space is now useless.
But who cares? What if I want to go on a long road trip and I pack several Blu-rays on board or several giant games on? Maybe. Well, my 16GB TF101 still has about 10GB on it..... My 16GB iPhone 4 still has about 4GB on it... My 2.5TB HDD still has about 2TB left on it....
If you have $100 extra dollars to go down on this beatiful tab, go for it!

I feel i'm convinced to go with the 64GB version, didn't know some games were so huge (with a N1 it's difficult to play anything not named angry birds ), and didn't remember the huge size of the HD files (sometimes i forget that because of the 2TB disk at the main pc, which never seem to end ). The main reason being, of course, laughing and looking down from the mountain to the 32GB peons
Now, time to wait, at least for christmas, for amazon.de to send it

Just because YOU use your devices a certain way does not mean everybody else should do the same as well. Some people have way more than 64gig of music. Some people have gigs of movies (I know I do). It's nice to copy a few 4gig+ movies over and not worry about left over space when I need the space later.
I have friends like this.. they say "16gb is fine for me, its all I need, why do you need a 64gb".. /facepalm
For many people, the 32GB model (supplemented by micro SD) is probably enough. But many is not all. Especially while travelling I do need A LOT more storage - I'd rather avoid having to use external storage or an SD card in the keyboard dock unless it's just for transferring photos from for example my digital camera. As a lot of commentators have mentioned, it's once you get into media storage especially video (but also to some extent music, photos, E-books, magazines/comics/PDFs and the like) that the 64GB model becomes advantageous. Basically, there is a lot of competing media requirements these days and I can only see that increasing. Cloud storage is not really an answer, as it's a solution for some of the issues but not others.

That's exactly why i asked it seriously, not in a "i don't need it, why you do?" fashion, but in a "i don't know if i would need it, tell me why you do and i will see if i do"
It's my first tablet, and my other android device is a nexus one with just ~ 180MB for apps + storage and microSD (4gb atm). That's why i prefer asking than just deciding on my own, as i already said, i might miss something and that's what i don't want And i asked it publicly because i might not be the only one with the doubt
Well, I deleted all my music from Transformer because of free space problem. 32GB would also be too little. 64GB + some SD/mSD would be OK though.

After reading lots of reviews and opinions and having the oportunity to use the tablet, im sure i want to buy a Sony Tablet S
Now comes the second decission to make.. ¿Which model? As the title of the post says, im between 32Gb or 16Gb+3G.
I know that whatever the model is, the space for installing apps are the 4GB partition and i think the apps that allow moving to Sd card, in this tablet means moving to the second partition but never to the external sdcard. So... Do you think the 4GB are enough for all kind of apps and games?
About the 3G conexion, thats something i will use mainly during travels. Instead of creating the hotspot with my mobile (and draining its battery), i'll change the SIM card to the tablet. Another option is buying a prepaid SIM with some data-plan to just use with the tablet during those travels, and when i dont have available wifi's.
A requirement would be to have access to music in the external sdcard, but allowing to reproduce a full album. I have the movies part resolved with the MxPlayer, but dont know any beauty music app which allow to do that
Well, any opinion or advice are welcome, so dont hesitate to post it !

I'd go with PowerAMP, it works beautiful. Might use WinAMP as well.
But I prefer PowerAMP myself. It can access the external sd-card without problems.

I suppose that you'll bring it around to work or travel, thus with 3G is a better option. And you can buy SD card for more storage and even cheaper.

I'd go for the 16GB+3G if the difference is that little, then get yourself a nice SDXC 128GB sd-card and space won't be much of a problem. At least not external. However internal might be eaten after a while if you install to many apps hehe.
Yes I know PowerAMP cost a few $$$ but it's worth it. WinAMP cost too. THough both exist as free-versions for you to try. So you can get the feel for it.
I'd go with the 16GB+3G too. I miss the 3G from my old Galaxy Tab since I got a Wi-Fi version and with full-size SD card and USB storage capabilities, storage isn't a huge problem unless you install stupendous amounts of apps.

The usage of the tablet is not going to be for work, but i'll bring it in my own travels where i wont have available a 3G network since the cost of using it in other countries are so expensive
I also found a nice music player (Meridian player), which allow to reproduce lists from the external sdcard, so with MxPlayer and Meridian i got covered the multimedia part.
Im also planning to use the tablet for playing games from psn, gameloft and emulators, so what bothers me is that the 16GB version only have around 8.5GB in the usb storage and im quite sure that all this kind of games cant be installed in the external sd.
How much space does this games take up in the usb storage? I know that having 3G is a great option, but im almost deciding on the 32 version just for this reason

Most of the gameloft games I've seen have been about 250MB worth of SD card data (maximum, although there's been reports of them taking up to 1GB), so you'd still be able to fit plenty of stuff on there. If you're that worried about it, sure, get the 32GB, but I think it's more about how you're going to use it.
I myself went with the 16GB as I already have an additional 16GB SD Card.
I have a MP3 player that I keep most of my music on, I mostly keep movies on my tablet.

Same here. I bought the 16GB version, since I already have 16GB and 8GB SD cards handy. Plus, once I bought my USB OTG cable I just keep movies on a 16GB USB and transfer them to the SD card one at a a time. Works a treat for me.

That's cause the only ones available on the Tablet S are worthless P.O.S. compared to the ones unavailable.
Games such as backstab HD, NOVA 2HD, Modern combat 2 and 3, 9mm etc have pretty much 600mb minimum.
w/ full sized SD cards available, 32gb isn't necessary at all as we've confirmed up to 128Gb SDXC cards working.
16Gb is more than enough for app / games storage (how many 1Gb games do you play?) in my opinon, but of course consider your own usage scenario

A friend introduced me to Xda when I was consitering buying a nook and he explained the concept of rooting.
Anyway, my question revolves around the half the ram on the new nook tablet. Assuming that there is no problems with rooting it, how much will half the ram effect the system?
I thought seeing the $50 price slash was a godsend, 8gig of storage i can live without, besides, its upgradeable if i really need it, but half the ram? whats the point of sticking on a faster processer if your gonna gut the ram?
can anyone give me an opinon as to if this is worth the price slash? or is $50 worth the extra ram?
its not half the RAM... its half the Storage. Which unless you are going to do some advanced partitioning you probably won't get much use out of anyway.
You pretty much have to get an external micro-SD card for these anyway as B&N only makes 1GB of the internal storage easily available.
Short answer... yeah its pretty much worth it. You can find 32gb cards online For $35 so you won't be missing much.

I cannot say whether or not it is worth it, because I have no experience with any other Android tablets besides the Nook, but I can confirm according to its website that is does have half the ram as well as half the storage. 8 GB storage and 512k ram.

You may have noticed in the video that this forum is stricter than others. It's mainly to keep things from getting repeated and to save people time, though, and it works nicely that way. Developing is hard work. BTW, no one's head is gonna explode about this, but questions like this are probably best off in the Q&A section.
So, to answer your question, the RAM is halved, the storage is more readily accessible but also halved... is it worth the $50 dollars you save? Sure! It has the same specs and price of the Kindle fire, but with SD storage as well, and the Fire works just fine with 512 mb of RAM.

No the RAM is indeed halved. All of the mainstream tech sites are reporting this, it's not a rumor.
As for partitioning, Nook Tabs are veeery picky about partition schemes,nso that's kinda dangerous. But the current alpha of CM7 gets you better access to the storage, and future releases are planned to allow full access.
my appolgies. tis a problem i usualy have figuring out which forum to post in, this seemed like the likely canidate since there were allready so many posts about the nook tablet 8gb. I will try to keep in mind that this is for tech questions only.

For $50 twice the ram and more storage (at least when you put CM7 on it). it seems easily worth it.
My opinion - definitely not worth it.
I got CM7 running on it, and I can see just how important it is.
You won't be running BN's ROM forever, and when you switch to CM7 (with CM9 coming soon, it seems), you really gonna wish you had that RAM, trust me.
I bought a NT last week on Ebay from B&N for $199. Not sure if they are still on sale, but you might check.
If it was a 1GB RAM / 8 GB storage deal, I'd have said the Kindle Fire had some real competition.
As it is, I'd definitely go for the 16 GB version. Not because of the extra storage, but those extra 512 MB in RAM are going to make a difference down the road. What was B&N thinking? Their real advantage over the Fire (RAM) is now gone!
Personally I'd shell out the extra few bucks for the RAM as well. If it were just the storage being reduced, I'd go with it, but the RAM is too important, imo.

They're thinking that many consumers don't seem to know or care about the RAM (or other advantages of the Nook hardware), they just look at the price tag and $199 for the Fire beats $249. I hope it helps, though they've got a mountain to climb to overcome the Amazon ecosystem and Appstore.

If only I'd known this 2 days ago when I bought an 8GB version while being in the USA... Figured the 8GB less flash wasn't a big deal if you're using an SD card anyway, and not knowing about the RAM I "saved" some bucks. Now I'm back in Belgium with an 8GB Nook, with half the RAM too, and at the moment unable to run CM... Great
Anyway, I hope someone can get it to root and/or run CM soon!

I certainly don't know the NT well, but I just helped my father in law get a 8GB tablet configured for its basic functionality. I'd like to be able to set it up to run non-BN sanctioned android apps, and from what I have found there is currently no known way to put go launcher or something similar in place that will allow it to be used for general android apps. This is a huge drawback, IMO. Hopefully in a reasonable time there will be some workarounds, but from the searches I have done, this is not currently doable. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.

They have figured out how to boot off an SD card for the 8G, now they are moving that over to the rooting SD versions and the recovery versions.
It will take a little bit of time but I think we will see a lot of progress in this next week.

I actually agree very much with this. The Kindle Fire's also ahead in terms of custom ROMs since it's not locked up. I chose the Nook Tablet (16 GB version) because I could buy it from my school bookstore and also use it with textbooks from my school.
If you have to choose between 8GB Nook Tab and 16GB Nook Tab, go with the 16 GB one. But if you're choosing between an 8GB Nook Tab and a Kindle Fire, I'd go with the Fire.

Okay, this is a common misconception about computer storage vs. memory. They're not really the same thing, although the words used to describe them are very similar.
RAM/Memory = How much your computer can keep loaded up temporarily. Think of it as how much someone could be thinking about at once - RAM is important for a computer or device to be able to multi-task.
Storage/Disk space = How much information a computer can recall. Think of it as how much someone could remember.
Now, storage allows you to have more files on your device, but RAM allows your device to be more powerful and run more applications at once.

The story starts with my wife's phone. I don't think that the model etc is important for this question, but it is an LG F60 (or something like that) and it is nearly new. The phone only has 4GB of memory so I made sure that I bought a good size SD card to go with it and I have set the OS to use the card for all media files. This seem to be working as all photos and music etc. are on the SD and there is nothing memory hungry on the internal mem. She has had the unit for a week or so and added perhaps 3 apps + those that were there as part of the out of the box config and now the thing is full - really! So I have a look at the memory usage and see - total 4GB - some apps and some bits and bobs 1.4GB - 'other' 2.44GB. When you drill down 'other' is almost all something called ‘system data’. So the first and simple question is this - does the android OS really need ~2.5 GB out of the box with little use, or have we done something wrong / ill advised? [BTW there are no backups locally, they are remote through a google account]
I connected the device to the PC to try to diagnose the situation. So the Internal storgae is reporting 60MB free of 1.32GB. This implies that 1.32 is all that we had to play with at all which would point towards the fact that the other 2.44 is correct for the OS. There is a folder called android which has ~25MB of data in it but nothing sizable elsewhere on the viewable internal storage space.
Out of interest I have connected a 7" android tablet to the PC to see if this reports the same sort of usage. This is showing 4.3 free from 5.5 total. This is an 8gb device so again this would suggest that 2.5 is used for system, which supports my initial fears.
If it does take 2.5GB just to provide a UI then is it wise or ethical for manufactures to sell devices with this little memory. Who would have thought that we would be suffering from memory issues in 2014 when a 32GB SD costs the price of a sandwich and a drink. I really am struggling with this whole concept. I mean an Ipad cost a lot of money and yet you have to choose to get the one with 32GB rather than 16GB even though the difference probably costs the company literally pence (if anything) - what is going on? My son had to remove loads of things from his ipad to even update the OS to the latest version - it just all seems soooo very crazy to me. With 4GB memory these phones are coming to the market and they are barely fit for purpose. You can buy a laptop these days (for not too much, a few hundred at most) and basically you can just sit and chuck data at it for years before you have any storage problem. Yes - I do understand the dif between a hard disk and RAM (it is called something else now I guess), but even so, these whole tablet industry is seriously flawed by this design limitation IMO. To add to this fact that it is made difficult to transfer data to and from ipads (less so android I realise) and they don't have an expansion slot, their popularity seems a fantastic mystery to me.
Anyway rant over - can somebody help me to understand the phone issue and how I might go about moving the OS onto the card or something of that kind which might improve the situ.
