[Q] Bad build.prop edit - AT&T LG Optimus G

Hi guys, before I start I'll say that I have searched all over the internet and here on the forums and I couldn't find my particular issue. Well the thing is that I edited the line in my build.prop "ro.build.version.codename=REL" to "ro.build.version.codename=L" so I could get the material design on the Google Now Launcher pulled from a Android L build here's the thread I got that app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-android-lollipop-apps-launcher-apps-t2912905
I did that and now my device will boot up normally then I will reboot by itself then show the boot animation then repeat the same process again and again until I force the phone to recovery or fastboot.
By the way my device is the LG Optimus G (E970) running GEE 3 ROM 1.2 and TRWP 2.6.3.0 and I have a backup of the original build.prop on my PC. I don't want to lose my data and apps since I forgot to make a backup (silly me).
I would like to know if there is a way to push the build.prop file on my PC to my phone so I could just replace it, or create a flashable zip.
Please help me, and thanks in advance.

Nevermind. I managed to push the original build.prop file to /system set the correct permissions and now my phone is working again.
Admin feel free to delete or close this thread.

[FIX] See ALL apps in Market (froyo only apps, and paid/protected apps) Automated!

laymil has posted a much better script for this. As such I will be discontinuing my work on this for now. Not for any hard feelings, but because it is now beyond me to help any further.
As always I am glad to have helped the community in some small way. Thank you all
CHEERS
Geniusdog254 Posted the exact lines in the build prop that needed to be changed. This is a pretty common fix for problems like this between versions of Android. There was some concern however that you may miss some of the newer apps released only for Froyo. I wrote some simple scripts that will fix this for us.
Simply: One puts the Froyo build.prop on your phone. The other puts the modded build.prop on your phone.
Prerequisites
YOU MUST HAVE GSCRIPT INSTALLED
YOU MUST HAVE BUSYBOX INSTALLED
(IF YOU ARE USING PAULS FROYO ROM FROM HERE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686631
IT DOES NOT HAVE BUSYBOX INSTALLED
Also--
There are now 2 downloads.
One will reboot your phone automatically
One will not!
(I recommend this one for anyone that has problems, or doesn't know ADB well.)
Installation
Code:
Download the attached .zip file
Place the "buildprop" folder in the root of your sdcard
Place both "Normal_Froyo.sh" and "Modded_Froyo" files in the gscript folder on your sdcard
Code:
Open Gscript
Press menu and select Add Script
Press Load File button
Select Normal_Froyo file
Press Save button at bottom
Repeat for Modded_Froyo file
After that all you have to do is open gscript and select which one to run.
Normal_Froyo will give you stock froyo build.prop and let you see froyo only apps
Modded_Froyo will give you the market fix build.prop
You can also create shortcuts directly on your homescreen for each script if you wish
-----------------------------------------------
I've decided to skip the update.zip, I've found no way to copy the scripts to the gscript folder on the sdcard this way.
I'm going for an app instead.
P.S. I've never written an app before, java looks like russian to me lol. So if anyone has any tips, or knows any good tut's let PM me and let me know.
------------------------------------------------
fixed no buildprop folder
added NON-autoreboot download.
buildprop switcher v0.3.zip ORIGINAL
buildprop_switcher_no_rebootv0.3.zip NO REBOOT
buildprop swticher v0.3.1.zip DOWNLOAD THIS ONE
When the file is unzipped, there are 4 files - No Buildprop folder. Now I get the part about putting the two .sh files into Gscript folder.
Do I make another folder called buildprop and put build.2.1 and build.2.2 inside?
OR
Do I put build.2.1 and build.2.2 onto the root of the SDCARD?

So sorry lol Didn't notice until I was making the update.zip that I didn't put the other files in a folder IN the zip. Just make a folder on your sdcard called buildprop. and put them in there.
BTW testing the flashable update.zip method right now
thx, seems to work
so no more *#*#etc.. afterwards?

Right.. the checkin service runs on each reboot. So it is not needed.
Worked just fine, but I did have to do the checkin thing. Possibly had poor signal but checkin hadn't done on reboot. Worked fine after that...

Can the checkin method be used, instead of rebooting? I'd much rather switch back and forth via checkin rather than having to reboot.
Thanks.

The reboot is built into the script. On my phone, if I checkin, the apps still don't show till I reboot. But show if I only reboot. If checkin alone works for you though, you can remove the reboot command from the script.
I'm not sure what happened, but after following the instructions exactly, my phone crapped. It got as far as the first nexus logo (non-animated), then the buttons lit up and I got a black screen. And that's how it stayed.
Any ideas?
This worked great for me I also solved my (unrelated) prob with SlideIt by forcing the dictionary to save in the settings, so I'm no longer bothered about losing shortcuts stuff on a reboot.
Dandy!!
tested again with a second n1. works perfect! automated checkin works perfect.
Can you please post what changed in the .prop file.
Also you didn't add the video codecs in the "new" prop file

The only thing I changed from the stock to the "modded" build.prop were these 2 lines
from this
ro.build.description=passion-user 2.2 FRF50 38042 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2/FRF50/38042:user/release-keys
to this
ro.build.description=passion-user 2.1-update1 ERE27 24178 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.1-update1/ERE27/24178:user/release-keys
I didn't add anything else to these. If you would like other things added to the build.prop files. You are welcome to edit them yourselves, or let me know what things you want changed, and I can include them.
I can make it user friendly. With descriptions for each modded line, then you can simply un-comment the options that you want.
PS: I thought I had the flashable update ready, but the update-script is giving me problems. ANYONE that wants to help please let me know. I'd really like to get this out to everyone.

To anyone that can't get thier phone to boot all the way after doing this
Its not a big deal. Your phone booted. But the build.prop didn't get copied before the reboot.
If you did a nandroid before you tried it. Restore that!
If you didn't, OR you know how to use adb. Do this
Code:
adb remount
adb push [COLOR="red"]/path/to/build.2.1(or)build.2.2[/COLOR] /system/build.prop
adb reboot
I hope to have this fixed quickly.
ANYONE WHO'S PHONE WILL NOT BOOT AFTERWARDS!
Check and make sure you put the files in the right place.
build.2.2
&
build.2.1
go in
build.prop FOLDER ON YOUR SDCARD
that was the only reason I got the error, i deleted the files off my card when i was testing the flashable update.
If you still get an error. open both files in the gscript folder, and remove or comment out the reboot line. Then tell me what error you get in gscript.
So I did this and am able to see the new apps. When I reboot the phone I cannot see a bunch of old apps in my launcher. I revert to the normal script and reboot again and still cannot see a bunch of my apps. Appbrain says theyre installed and I can open them from there but no widgets or shortcuts for them Any Ideas?

Are those apps moved to the SD by any chance? If so, best bet is to go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Find your launcher, and force stop it. Should work after that.

Nope they're not on SD. I'll try the fc of launcher.
Ok it worked thank you! but my xiia widget still is not back and I'm assuming others. Anything I can do for the widgets?
Ok installed and reinstated the app. Works great thx again.
Update:
Ok after another reboot, apps don't show again. FC the launcher they come back but not the widgets.. Grrrrrr...

[Q] File system changes do not take affect.

I asked this in the general Q&A thread because I feel it is an android issue, not a Note issue...but alas no one even replied, trying it out here. Please help!

Hello all,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note i717. I have installed a few ROM's, but recently I installed CM9 unofficial build. After it was installed, I noticed that my default.prop is only like 4 lines long. So I try and add stuff to it (I am rooted, and used RW mode in Root Explorer). I can close the file and save changes successfully, but when I reboot it is back to the way it was with the 4 lines. It is not only that though, any files i add to the "/" get deleted upon reboot.
Things I have tried:
ODIN to stock rom, still did not have a full default.prop
Tried many different ways to change file system (different programs)
Ran fix permissions in CWM and busybox installer script
All with no success. Is there anything else I can try to fix this and be able to edit my "/" and have changes take affect. Or has anyone had this issue before?
Thanks

I was wondering if anyone with an i717 could go into cwm, run a backup, and upload that somewhere so I can restore it. Keep in mind your personal data gets backed up also, so preferably someone with a fresh working install. I don't care what rom it is either.
Thanks for reading.
The default.prop should only be 4 lines..
Are you confusing it with the build.prop?
Wow well don't I feel stupid. That's exactly what it was. Thanks for helping me see the way!

[Q] How do you change the wallpaper on settings submenus in CM7?

I currently use a HTC HD Mini (Photon) running the SCREAM ROM by Ling Gan. It has a few bugs for most of which there is either a workaround or fix but there is the one problem which has remained unsolved: the default wallpaper on everything BUT the home and lockscreens cannot be changed. It is of a tree in a meadow under a blue sky and when rotated to landscape changes to some smiling chinese lady in the "settings" submenu. Doesn't hamper use much but it is quite annoying.
I have tried a number of solutions some of which resulted in my having to reflash and others did nothing. I post this here because I think it is a CM7 issue. The ROM developers have so far been unable to post a solution within the thread and I am aware that a fix for similar problems on CM9 ROMs exists using ADB to edit framework-res.apk. I felt it was time the problem was tackled by the wider XDA fam. Used google translate to look on the chinese site where the ROM is native to (mobile-kon) but found no help as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i think ur problem lays in the framework-res.apk it contains the look of the rom and the transition effects
you can mod apk with the apkmanager tool for ur computer in the frameworkresapk you should find the images u want to change replace them witch a black picture or something like that
if never done this befoure exept from changing some transition effects and i had a couple of errors among this
the easier way seems to search for the rom on another page cus the images ure stating are not standart in the cm7

Many thanks!
I started off looking through the "res" folder in framwork-res.apk using Root Explorer to identify the images for the wallpaper. They were
Res/drawable-land-mdpi/screen-background-dark-transparent.png
And
Res/drawable-mdpi/screen-background-dark-transparent.png
I then created a copy of framework-res.apk on my SD card and copied it onto my pc. I created new wallpapers to replace the ones I just mentioned, one in portrait, the other in landscape. They were 320x480 and 480x320 respectively. Using 7zip on the pc, I placed them in the corresponding folders (/drawable-mdpi for protrait and /drawable-land-mdpi for landscape).
I copied framework-res.apk back to my sdcard and then fired up terminal emulator to run the following commands
su
sys -rw
busybox cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework
sys -rw
You might get error messages from running apps after this but ignore them and reboot. The idea is to replace the framework-res.apk in system/framework with the one you just edited.
After the reboot, you should have your newly created wallpaper showing up in settings in both landscape and portrait modes.
Please hit "thanks" for both jiffer1991 and I if this was helpful. Big ups to jiffer1991for pushing me in the right direction.

hm u got stuck in a bootloop thats what i meant when i mentioned errors =)
you could make a zip with the old framework res apk or reflash the cm rom
if u dont whipe data/cash ure setting will be safed
read some tutorials how to mod the framework res apk
I have an .zip file on the sd card.
Can i copy it to the Android system somehow?
Felix
P.S. can i zip the framework and remove the ".zip" to ".apk"?
It is most likely that the zip file you have is the ROM image from which you flashed in the first place. Changing the extension to apk is NOT what you want to do. I suggest you create a backup in CWM of you present configuration and after reflashing, you can then do a partial restore of your user data. But its like Jiffer1991 said, read up on CWM, theres an exhaustive guide on xda somewhere.
Thanks,
i installed my modified cm rom without wipe caches data or something.
And now i have my old datas back, with the new Background.

[Request] Stock Galaxy S III SamsungCamera.apk and .odex

Hi guys!
Could someone upload the original SamsungCamera.apk, please? Because when I'm tried to install HX Camera mod, i put the two files into a zip, when the Root Browser crashed. The two files were gone, and the zip became corrupt. After this, i put the mod to system\app. On the first run, it worked, but after a while it crashed. I run the camera again and it crashed after a time, again, and again. So I decided to try the video. And now it doesn't even want to start. So that's why i request the stock camera, and please upload as soon as possible. Thanks.

So, I downloaded this app and I've moved it to /system/app folder and I've tried to install it and it simply says "not installed". I've been searching the net for days now. I've done the following.
1. Root access for Apps and ADB
2. I deleted the CN 9 mod camera app in the /system/app folder (Is there something else that I need to delete?)
3. Installed Busy Box, Astro, ES File Explorer and Easy Installer
4. I successfully installed other stock apps such as S Voice.
I've found similar questions on the net, but no answer. Please help me out!
Set permissions to read write execute / read /read usint root explorer.
Reboot in recovery , wipe cache and dalvik.
Reboot.
That should do the trick

Thanks but no dice. I narrowed it down to few possible reasons, all of which I would need help with.
1. Even though, my options say that I'm rooted for "Apps and ADB", I don't think I'm "Fully rooted" as Android Commander still says "no root".
2. I don't have the right drivers. I was told that the "service drivers" are different than the normal USB drivers I get when I plug in my phone and maybe that's why Android Commander might not fully recognize my phone.
3. Permissions. I keep reading about read/write permissions, but maybe the options that I'm looking at is not the same "R/W" in question. I don't know.
4. Everything is correct and I just don't know what I'm doing
So, I realized that the app is a "read only" apk and it wont let me change it's permission in Root Explorer. Is there a way that I can change it? Or does anyone have another SG3 camera apk?
So, after extensive research, it has been reported that particular app doesn't work on custom roms.

U can change it actually in root explorer. At the top right there's R/O, click it so it'll be R/W.. from there u can change its permission. I know this is pretty obvious, but this may help u out. cheers!

HERE IS A SIMPLE WAY TO GET DATA TETHERING THROUGH BUILD.PROP EDIT

Step 1.) download a text editor.i suggest 920 text editor.

original build.prop file to build.prop.bak
Step 4).open up your text editor and navigate to the directory where you copied the build.prop file
Step 5.)look for this line [they are both close to the end of the build.prop file] "net.tethering.nonprovisioning=true" [once you find it change the true

Step 6.) " look for line "persist.data.tethering_oc=1" change the variable 1 to 0 so it reads "persist.data.tethering_oc=0

Actually not.
Instead of trying to stop the thermal mitigation from working I did just the opposite, I changed the parameters on how it operates.
The file /system/etc/thermal-engine-8974.conf.
This file controls what happens to cpu speed at various temperatures.
That is what you tweak and it just works.
I also used ROM Toolbox to change the governor.

First of all, thanks for the post. Although I appreciate the helpful post, my phone is now stuck in boot loop . I hate to be the one to open up an old thread but I'm freaking out at the moment due to brick fever :crying: My current setup was a rooted LG G3 VS98512b. My goal was simple, I didn't want to do anything crazy, I just wanted to enable wifi tether now I'm afraid I've lost everything... Is there a way I can get back into the storage of my phone and delete the modified build.prop, remove the ".bak" from the original and be back to the good life? Any assistance is greatly appreciated, this seemed like such a simple modification that led to such a big headache.
It sounds like you might have used an editor on your build.prop that could not handle the file size, resulting in your editted build.prop being truncated. Otherwise, maybe your permissions were left wrong. Either of these will cause your phone to bootloop.

Thanks for the reply. I used the editor recommended in the tutorial, 920 text editor. I followed the instructions word for word, I don't know what the problem is. Maybe its because I have the newest update and this mod was for 10b???As far as the permissions, the phone asked automatically if I wanted to change the permissions. The original build.prop is still there... is there a way I can delete the modified build.prop and replace it with the original? I really wish I would not have followed this tut, it didn't seem like a popular method. There has to be a way to delete the modified build.prop right?

Again, thank you for the response. Do you recommend a specific method or tutorial for trying restore the original build.prop? I did search however, because this scenario is so specific I'm not sure there is an exact solution to my problem.
Again, just in case someone else can chime in, I followed the instructions on the first post of this thread (see first post for detailed info). I copied the original build.prop then changed the name of the original build.prop, edited the copy, moved it to the original directory and restarted the phone. Now my phone doesn't make it to the Verizon screen (I think it is stuck in boot loop), the screen stays black and the small led on the left corner flashes blue and green. If I can just get access to the storage I can replace the modified build.prop with the original that is still in the same directory just renamed. It seems like such an easy task but, I just don't know how to go about it I'm a somewhat of an old school tinker, I'm just now getting back into the swing of Android... Thanks in advance!!
Bump
Bump please
This is crazy... I changed 2 values in build.prop for tethering and my phone wont boot now... I didnt install a ROM, change DPI, or make any major changes WTF???
Do you have a custom recovery (twrp)?
Can you connect to your phone with adb?
If you have twrp, search the board for the startup hardware key sequence to reach twrp, else from adb do a reboot recovery.
In twrp, you can select to mount system, then go to advanced - file manager. You can delete the bad build.prop, rename the good one, then set the permissions on the good one. If your good copy of build.prop is on a PC, put it on a flash drive, and use twrp's file manager to get it into your phone.
If you have a saved copy of build.prop on your PC, you can also use adb's push command. (You may also want to look at the adb shell command. The sequence might be to open a shell, delete the bad build. prop, get the right build.prop into the right directory, then chmod the right build.prop so it has the proper permissions.)
