[Q] Gear S needs latest Samsung Phone to even work? - Samsung Gear S

I've read somewhere that Gear S need the latest Samsung Phone to setup for it even to run. If that's true, it's a let down.
Was looking forward to use it as a stand alone backup phone. If you don't own the latest Samsung Phone, will it function as a standalone phone for call and sms?

Maybe only for initialize and to get a Tizen app?

I certainly hope so. I know there are a number of lucky one who got the watch prior to launch. If they could confirm, it would be greatly appreciated.
Don't want to end up buying a non functioning phone just because I did not own a Samsung phone.

I think you need a Samsung phone with the Gear Manager App to get it started and for future updates. But after that i think you can use as a stand alone phone. you can check out some youtube vids for more info. I dont think anyone has purchased the device yet.

I'm one of those who got it on 15 October. Largely enjoying it.
According to the list of compatible phones published by Samsung, most of the phones from 2012 onwards are compatible.
I believe the reason is because Tizen is still largely a Samsung undertaking for now, and they own the largest number of developers for it.
At any rate, you REALLY don't want to be swiping on this with 1 arm crooked all the time, and squinting at the 2" screen. Serious.

Currently, the only phones compatible with the Gear S are the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S 4 mini, Galaxy S 5, Galaxy S5 Sport, and the Galaxy Note II, 3, and 4.

**If it gets stuck:
I finally figured it out. I uninstalled the modded Gear manager, then reinstalled, but before I opened it, I turned off data and wifi, so it couldn't check for updates. Once I did that, then it was able to connect to the gear and I was able to follow the rest of the directions. Then I installed Tizonmod and eventually the Gear manager app got updated.

My Samsung Gear S just arrived today. I was excited, thinking that I was getting a standalone cellular device just like all the hype buzzing around claims. Not true. The Samsung Gear S is not a standalone cellular device despite all the false advertising to the contrary. I just got off the phone with Samsung tech support and they verified that the Samsung Gear S smartwatch needs to be connected via bluetooth to a compatible phone (Note 2, 3, or 4; Note Edge; Galaxy S 3, 4, or 5). If it's not connected and within 33 feet of the phone, you cannot make or receive phone calls, emails, or text messages. It's not just a matter of setting up the watch using a compatible phone and the Samsung Gear app and then going on your merry way without the phone making phone calls out into the way beyond. This overhyped dud doesn't work outside of bluetooth range even with it's cellular receiver. I tried asking Samsung tech support why in the world the Gear S even has a cell receiver at all if it can't work without being connected to a compatible smartphone. The only answer I could get was something about it being a convenience of some sort if you want, for example, to go for a run and leave your phone in the car. I imagine that's only good for those joggers who don't want to run more than 33 feet. Needless to say, I'm sending this overpriced "standalone" smartwatch back for a refund. I hope this adds some clarity to all the overblown rhetoric about this disappointing device.

Where to begin.................
Lets start off with did you do a little research on this "overhyped" device before you purchased? I mean, easily seeing its a SAMSUNG device would be a safe assumption that the Gear S would work best with a SAMSUNG phone. And that one possibility that it MAY work with other devices, maybe research that first to get confirmation? But instead, just purchase Gear S based on hype? Well, thats not good is it?
It doesnt work outside of bluetooth range even with its cellular receiver? Funny, I DO NOT have this problem. I can make calls, send text and use multiple other things that this device offers. Now will I always leave my phone at home? Highly doubt it. But those times I may leave it at home, I'm set.
You talked to a Samsung rep? lol. Thats not good either. It amazes me that so many people still go by what some of these reps say. Samsung has some great products (as others do too. But I cant speak for them), but I'll put my trust in a XDA member before I even THINK to put it into a Samsung rep. Not saying they are all bad, but many have NO IDEA on what they are talking about.
So yeah. I agree with you. If your not willing to just take a little time out and research the "overhyped" device you purchased. You might want to send it back. Its obviously just not for you.

I came from a windows phone, and microsoft has that feature enabled for all their phones just by going to windowsphone.com and signing in with your live id. and before that, on windows mobile, i had my phone setup with creeper and it got stolen and i wiped it remotely but before i wiped it, i sent it a couple texts telling the thief where he was and that if he didn't return it i was going to call the police. the next morning the phone was sitting on my desk...
I used that Windows phone feature to locate/spy on my kids iDevices have the similar functionality. Not sure why Google left this one out?
DIVE was left out of the i-717 because AT&T offers their own called Mobile Locate and surprise...they charge for it! It is an add-on to the phone insurance.

Really, no love Cerberus?
You can snap pictures from the website control panel with the phone's front camera and have them emailed to you, or record audio from the mic and send that.
You can make it so any SIM put in the phone that isn't the current SIM will only call a phone number you specify.
You can wipe whatever you want from remotely and track the exact location of your phone at all times.
It is AMAZING!

Cerberus is one of the first things I install on a new phone. If you are rooted you can install it into the rom and it will survive factory reset. It blows away anything else out there right now. You can record audio, video, have it call a number, take a picture, snap a screenshot. Remote lock / wipe. It is just amazing.

[Q] What works without a phone? I just want to run!

I'm interested in using the Gear S for running. It has everything I use in a single device: GPS, mp3 player and heart rate monitor. In theory, I could you my Nike+ account and just be happy with it. But I don't have a Samsung phone...
I believe everything I need comes already installed in the Gear S, so I wanted to turn it on and go for a run!
Am I being to naive to think this would work without a Samsung phone?
Thanks in advance.

Without gear manager nothing works. It has to be setup using gear manager. If you know someone with a Samsung phone that is compatible with gear s you could get it going but it's complicated. I have a note 3 but like my Nokia 1520 phone. I am struggling trying to get it to work the way I want it to with the Nokia. So needless to say I'm using my Note 3 at the moment because I like the gear s so much.

Right it's like buying an Ipad(at least the old ones) where at least once you need to install itunes and connect to a PC.
You need Gear manager at least to start. Then you need it if you want to install anything new.

A poster said he has an iphone when he bought the Gear S a sales employee paired it with a samsung demo phone in store and his stuff works for now until he needs an update then he's screwed
I bought 2, one for my wife and one for me.
I have a SGS5 and she had a Nexus 5. I figured I could set up both watches with my phone... the problem is when switching devices it FACTORY RESETS every time. So 1 watch per phone
I ended up buying her a Galaxy Avant as well as it was the cheapest way I could find for her to run her watch.
Kinda lame but she's happy so m'eh.
I love do the watch btw, it's perfect for my needs (ymmv).

no thanks, well the weather app wasn't working and the news briefing didn't work as well.
I have an old samsung S3 which I used to pair the phone with. I bought a one plus one but in the end it just doesn't work with the one plus one.
There is a way also to be found here on the dxa forum to pass by a samsung and download the gear on any other android phone but this doesn't work a 100% either.
It's a bitc**** but in the end to get the most out of the watch is to do it with a samsung mobile which runs 4.3 and up.
I'm planning to build a site only with info for the Gear -S it's called www . gear-s.info and I hope to gather info of all the different places to get one proper library with info over the gear.
The phone looks great and has a real big X factor but there are still some downsides as well to it. One big issue is that it runs on Tizen and in a smartwatch world with all but the Gear's running on androidware it makes the development of apps for the Gears not a big priority with people.
Another thing I can not understand is that Samsung undermining their own sales by having the Gears only work with Samsung. Sales could triple if you would be able to run the gear manager on any other android machine.
I find Samsung getting more and more like Apple, at one point you need to buy everything from Samsung to communicate between the different mobile devices.
The problem is that they do really make nice things but it would make live a lot easier if they op the market to other mobile IOS and brands.
I do love the people on the XDA forums, the way they discover things and help people, their patience yep, they are great.
I'm going to try to find a way to get whatsapp on the gear S.
Good luck
Hans

[Q] HELP: Texts from Two Phones Syncing on Gear?

I found some suspect texts on my BFs samsung gear smartwatch. He claims his coworker had his phone synced to his via bluetooth at one point so whenever he's at work, sometimes the coworkers texts will sync up and appear on his watch. Is this possible? I'm not tech savy so I asked samsung and they said that two phones cant be paired on a gear at the same time, but if one phone is out of range, then another can pair/sync up when its in range. Still confused. Any insight would help.

As far as I know what Samsung said is correct. Two phones can be connected to the same watch but not at the same time.
So, if your boyfriend allowed a co-worker to connect once and never deleted the connection afterwards, then whenever your boyfriend is at work and walks too far away from his phone, he goes out of range and loses connection to his phone. Now, if that same colleague from before is near your boyfriend's watch while it is not connected to anything else, and this colleague's phone has bluetooth turned on, then his phone would reconnect to the watch and your boyfriend could start receiving the colleague's texts on his watch.
So is it possible? Yes, although I'm not sure why he has others connecting to his phone, or why they want him reading their text messages... Either way, maybe someone else here can confirm what I just explained...to be sure that I'm not making a mistake somewhere and misleading you in any way!
Edit: OK it seems that the watch resets as soon as you pair it with a new phone. Didn't know that until just now! This means that it doesn't look good for your boyfriend's story...
It CAN'T be paired to 2 different phones. The gear will factory reset

Thank you so much for replying. He claims the coworker connected to share data/files? Is that even possible? Seems very strange to me. Also, does it sync recent texts or just real time texts as they come in when it reconnects via blue tooth? Meaning existing texts would load or just new ones after its connected. TIA

It can only be connected via bluetooth to one phone.
---------- Post added at 12:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 AM ----------
The phone it syncs to has to have gear manager installed. If it syncs to another phone it will factory reset the gear s.

Thanks. Samsung claimed it can go between one phone and another "seamlessly" if one phone is out of range? They didnt mention the factory reset but if thats the case, its anything but seamless.
It is true that when you attempt to connect another phone to your stock unrooted Gear S it asks to factory reset, therefore what your BF is suggesting is not true.
Samsung CC has told me many inaccurate things in the past.
My advise, if you are suspect of youtr BF that is, is to never bring anything up about your suspicions. Let him continue his life normally. There is no way he can cheat on you for an extended amount of time without you finding out.
However, if you talk to him about your suspicions, he may becaome extra - super - paranoid careful and that will complicate things further.
Dump him and I'll swing over to pick you up just kidding, hope things work out for the best.

This isn't a technology question... it's a relationship question. Welcome to Car Talk
So... my general advise to anyone who suspects their non-married partner of cheating is - move on. Drop off the Key, Lee. Either you're right, and he/she is cheatng, or you're wrong, and you have trust issues in this relationship. Either way, why waste your time if you're not committed. Just move on.
If you're married, or in a long term relationship, seek counseling as a couple.
The technology red-herring answer - he's lying to you about the text messages. Why you were checking his watch for text messages I leave as an exercise for the reader.

Be gentle.

Same thing was happening to me. GF was upset from some texts that showed up on my watch. We figured it out, that when my watch went into Gear only mode, which it would once I was out of range of my phone, I would get these texts from whomever had the phone number that AT&T issued me on the watch. So maybe that is happening?

Yes that happens to me too, but in this case the boyfriend said he paired it with colleagues to share files, etc.
As a general note to everyone, lets try to stick with providing the OP with technical clarity here, not relationship advice. We all want to help, but we're more likely to give her great technical info than we are to give her great relationship info. With technical help she can make up her own mind accordingly
The boyfriend could have let his friend pair with it and is getting crap texts on the watch's internal number.
Who is to say the boyfriend is technically savy enough to know for sure versus pointing out the only out of the ordinary usage he had.

i think that means
1 it is possible to get wayward texts and calls due to telcos recycling numbers
2 the bf may have indeed have done the pairing he said he did with his friends phone
3 yes the Gear S would have reset when bf re-paired with his own phone
4 but in fact the dubious texts might be due to fact 1 and un-tech bf was confused about the coincidence
is it technically possible to ring the number and see who answers?

The consensus I got from difft places was it could technically happen, but it's highly highly unlikely given reset issue.

Worth Getting it?

Hello,
I found that some of the Samsung S features may fill some of my needs however I have a few questions:
Does it work well with Note 3?
I would like to use it for fitness, is it any good for that? (running, indoor exercise,)
is there any standalone app that can be used for running (without phone)? I know that in Android wear we can use ghostracer and endomodo. Is there anything like that?
Is it worth getting it now for 289 €?
Thanks
Yes
Yes
Dunno..think so
Yes
Thanks.
Some people in reddit said that it doesnt worth so I am a bit undecided.
I have already tried 2 wear devices and I am swapping for this one. Just returned de sony smartwatch 3 and ordered the gear S. Lets see if I am happy with it.
The thing is that the new ones coming now arent better for the purposes that I need. That is why I also decided to choose the gear S.

Thanks I just received it
I also own the gear S and for what your looking for your will love it. I have about 350 mp3s loaded on my gear, I have the gear circle bluetooth headphones, so when I need to take a short trip out i can leave my phone at home, and still receive text, calls, email, and listen to my music while our and about. The large curved screen is incredible, stands out from all other smartwatches, and for its size its suprisingly light. Good luck.
Just want to add, that the new Samsung smart watch uses an eSim.
I still pop the sim out of my S5, and shove it in my watch when I want to leave my phone, and I don't pay any extra per month. Can't do that with an eSim.
Had the watch for about three weeks now and I love it. It is so nice to leave the phone home at times and still be in contact with others. As far as I know, this is the only watch that has the ability to make and receive calls as a stand-alone device. Never really got the whole "smart watch" thing. If your watch needs to be in the vicinity of the phone to receive notifications then why not just pick up your phone,,,,,the Gear S can work alone (albeit with limited functionality)if you turn blue-tooth and gear manager off. I do it all the time to save battery and I get almost three days life. My moto 360 gets maybe a day and does nothing more than my phone does. Heck it was just a few weeks ago that the 360 was able to work off of the internet connection which helps but, still thats at home (where my wifi connection is) and thats the same place as where my phone is located so again why not just use the phone LOL.

I agree with that. More importantly in my country where the eSim will take a long time to arrive.

Yes, that is why I decided to choose the S over the 360. Additionally, the new 360 (not the sport version) doesn't has GPS which was one of the features that made me choose the gear S. I am happy with it so far

fake galaxy s9+

OK, so my wife recently bought an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S9+ from an individual on facebook for $400. At first I thought man that's cheap. Then I actually got hold of it. First I notice the OS is old and ninth ng like my s8+. Dual sim, lot of options and settings missing. Plug it into my laptop and it says that the portable device only has 5.38g memory. But the phone actually has 128g and in the USB options itbalso has an option for built in cd-rom.. Anyway its a fake. How do I go back and put the real s9+ software/firmware on it?
The first way to notice if your galaxy s9 is fake is open the camera app and then pro mode and switch between the f/1.5 and the 2.4 and see if it actually does something. In case that your were ripped off, i'm sorry to tell you, you can't put the original/real software on it

You can't, Samsung firmware would brick your device. Better try to get your money back or contact the police for what you can do.

Thanks for the reply. That was a lot quicker than I expected to see a response. Anyway..Well d#*! it. Most everything on it is just like the galaxy but it has old android version. What about upgrading it to the 8.0 Oreo at least. I've tried contacting the individual but since the first message we sent regarding it the person either blocked us or deactivated the account. So....... Hit a brick wall there.
Why would you buy a s9+ for 400 in the first place?
you cannot upgrade to oreo because you don't know what is the correct firmware for you device.. since it's a fake it probably won't have any customer support or future updates

What you bought is NOT a Samsung device, its probably a Chinese clone with inferior hard- and software. If you we`re even able to flash firmware with Odin which i doubt you`re device would be nothing more then a 400 USD paper weight. Better file a complaint with the police if the buyer on FB sold the device as a genuine Samsung S9+, because this is fraud and a lie.
Can you post a screenshot of /settings/ Telephone info/software data. Or get AIDA64 from the playstore for the phone info.

Install AIDA64 from the PlayStore for device info and look for /system/modelnumber. You can insert any model number specification in the build.prop, that doen`t make it true though.

This phone has a MediaTek CPU and it has absolutely no similarity`s to a Samsung phone, it will be very hard (probably impossible) to find a rom that will go with that. I`d sell it for a few bucks to get rid of it and get a proper one. Try Swappa for instance for finding a descent phone.

Unfortunately I dont think you can find any matching firmware for this fake model. Maybe you can have a look with custom OS instead e.g. lineage os or cyanogenmod. not sure they have something for this device and you may have a chance to turn your device into a $400 paper weight too.
LOL this is hilarious. Who randomly buys a phone on Facebook? I don't even use Facebook, but I definitely wouldn't just buy a phone from there.

You can tell your wife to use it as is, which I would NOT do. The reason being, you dont know what kinda of spyware is loaded on that thing. I would factory reset it, sell it on ebay for what it is, an s9+ clone and try to recovery the loss. I think that phone should be worth $200 on ebay
