[Q] Why Doen't My Android Phone Get OTA Updates Greater Than 2.3.6? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All!
I just purchased a new (but 2011 model) Samsung Stratosphere SCH-I405 cell phone from ebay.com.

As soon as I got it and set it up there was a notification of an available update. I let the update proceed and when I logged back in I checked the Android version 2.3.6. I have had the phone for about a week now and haven't got any other OTA updates.
Is 2.3.6 the highest Android version my phone will ever get (through an OTA update)? Do older phones not get the latest Android updates and if so why? Is it because Verizon (my carrier) has decided to not update my phone as an incentive to buy a newer one? Or is it something like a hardware compatibility issue?
If I am never going to get a higher version by an OTA is the some other way I can update my Android version? Perhaps go to Samsung or Verizon's website and download an update.zip file? If this option is not available is the only other option I have is to root my phone and install a custom ROM? Or can I root my phone, find a higher Android update.zip file somewhere, and update the phone that way? (I guess I would have to make sure that, if I updated using the update.zip method, that my phone is compatible with whatever Android version I am installing.
Thank you,
Jan
P.S. I used the entry called Firmware Version in the About phone page to determine the Android version . I don't know if Firmware Version really is the same as the Android version but there wasn't an entry called Android Version (like there is on my other Android devices which are all running version 4.4.4).
I assume either Samsung decided not show Android Version in the About phone page or if it's due to the fact that my Android version is so old?

You're out of luck with any official updates. Back in 2011, neither Samsung nor Verizon were really insistent about keeping their phones up to date. Add to it that the phone has a physical keyboard (meaning more of a pain to add that functionality to updates since most phones do not have this) and less of a demand from early Android adopters and the fact that the phone wasn't popular in the first place means that it didn't make much sense to put the time and effort into keeping the phone going. Also, about the time ICS came out, they were releasing the Stratosphere 2... So yea, that's pretty much it. Due to it's lack of popularity, this also means not as many people who are interested in developing custom software updates owned the phone and not as much work done in customizing and updating either. It seems your only options are other customized 2.3.6 versions that have been tweaked to be slimmer, faster, and/or maybe some UI changes, but nothing beyond 2.3.6. You can find some more info @ rootzwiki since they don't have a forum here on XDA for it (see reasons listed above for why...)

Oh well. I guess it's not that big of a deal. I purchased the phone on Ebay.com for my elderly mother to use. I am sure she won't "max" out the system and she probably won't need any features that might be missing from an older version of Android. I am setting up the phone so that everything is very easy to use (I found a launcher for senior citizens called Big Launcher) that changes the interface to simple screens with big buttons. So I guess I really don't need a newer version of android or a custom ROM.
I do have one other question though. You know all those default apps that come pre installed on Android like Let's Golf, etc? Is there any way I can uninstall those and "trim" down the phone so that there are no unnecessary programs running and slowing down the system? Would I need to have root access to do so? Or is a superuser even restricted from uninstalling these core apps?
Thank you.

For that kind of stuff, on the older updates, you would need to root the device. Unfortunately, it's a bit more of a pain to the average rooting novice than some...

[Q] NextBook 7 (Next7P) Android Market or Custom ROM Installation?

I just picked one of these up for a great deal $130. For the price it is not a bad tablet at all.
Decent screen size and brightness, speed is not bad, it runs Gingerbread (2.3.1), and has an SD-Card slot.
Anyhow, I have managed to get the Amazon App Store installed which is nice, however, the stock ROM DOES NOT have the Android Marketplace installed. Also, on my Nexus One I use the stock News & Weather App and Widget religiously and I would love to be able to run this on the Nextbook 7.
I have read lots of posts on XDA covering the Next3 and have seen custom ROMs and even people that have installed the News & Weather App so I know theoretically it is possible to do, at least with the little brother of the Next7.
So my question is, does anyone have any information or links regarding either getting a custom ROM installed, getting the Android Marketplace installed, or getting the stock News & Weather Widget/App installed on this device. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
My father has cancer and I bought this device specifically for him to use as he does not have much motivation to leave the house these days. He has a Droid 1 and loves the News & Weather widget as well so it would be great if I could at least get that to run. I have put the APK on the device and actually gotten it to install, but whenever I run the app it Force Quits with an error.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can shed some light on my issues.

Bump. Bump. Thanks.
z4root will allow you to root the Next7.
I have a Next6 and am trying to get a custom ROM for it. Any chance you could pull the ROM off your Next7?
Dump your Home Tablet rom and create a custom rom
I've installed z4root and i get an error when i try to perform root. And any news on custom roms?
thanks

hey try that new zerRush root method!
One click roots etc will not work on nextbook 7 Premium due to the system being cramfs. Cramfs is read only, to make changes you have to de-compress the file system, make your changes to system.img (or what ever .img file you want to change..) and re compress it. Then flash the device with the new update.img

Ok, my step dad owns a Next7S...I personally HATE it!! I want to get google play on it somehow. Anyone able to get adb/root??? Windows and Linux both will not find the device via adb. Yes I have debugging on, I'm not a noob. I don't know how to dump the software though at all. But if you give me some useful instructions how to, I can do it. I saw a way to get adb on the Next7P. That doesn't work on this Next7S. Serial Number: YF0312959XX
[RANT]All I want is Google Play.......what idiotic company sells androids without the main market??? SMH!!!
At first when I messed with it, I thought it was CM9 without gapps.....this feels just like CM9 without gapps. This tab isn't worth anything without gapps working.[/RANT]
hi guys..
is there any hard reset method for this device..?

[Q] Looking for CWM Recovery on HD-89 7 inch tablet

Hello,
I recently bought one of the HD-89 7 inch tablets that are available now.
Nice thing is they also have a phone function
They are MT6589 devices based on MTK8389 hardware.
I was wondering if there is already a CWM Recovery available for these devices.
Rooting was no problem.
Cheers,
Oni

Hi Oni, I have just bought my HD-89 7" phablet and have been looking for the same thing. Hope that someone with good knowledge will make the CWM recovery out.
It seems there are several variants of HD-89 in the market, called by different names. I want to root my phablet also but I don't know how to do it. Could you please show me the product webpage where you bought it from, and please help explain the steps to root it.
Thanks in advance..

Thanks. I managed to root my HD-89 with MTK6589 auto one click (motochopper) a few weeks ago. Have enjoyed using the device until yesterday when my Wifi/ bluetooth were not working. I thought the hardware module was dead, luckily I got the stock firmware file from the seller whom I bought it (she was very helpful). In the end, I flashed the stock firmware with SP Flash Tool, and together with MTKDroidtool, I now managed to put Clockworkmod Recovery 5.5 and root my HD-89 again with these two wonderful tools..... Using the MTKDroidtool to create the CWM recovery image is rather easy and straightforward if anyone wants to try....
I want to extend the running hours of the tablet, now considering to play witth the build.prop editing to reduce wifi scan timing.... Changing the boot animnation is next in my list

Don't worry about the fake hardware you are probably using an kernel/boot.img that the tool doesn't know(Just a guess I'm not a super pro). Do this. Root the tablet first, then click "To use boot from phone". Then click "Recovery Boot". U have to be rooted for flash_image to work, I know that much.
HI, i just passing by, two interesting things:
- There is updates every month of this phablet, mine is 4.2.1 android with compilation 03_v89_tg_20130615 ,and there is a 4.2.2 version! : http://www.needrom.com/phone-roms/star/serial-h/hd89/
- Some versions of this phablets are clocked to 1.5 ghz, It would be nice to get that kernel!

LG G2, LG G3 and LG G4 To Receive Android Marshmallow Instead of 5.1.1 Lollipop

I can't post links yet but you can find this article on the front page of NERUOGADGET.com
It seems that the LG G2, LG G3 and LG G4 devices will not receive the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, as some new rumors suggest that these devices will skip the latest Android Lollipop version and will jump directly to the upcoming Android M.
So, if you are an owner of a LG G2, LG3 or a LG G4 smartphone, you will still need to wait a few months until the device will receive the next Android OS update. We remind you that LG has also skipped Android updates in the past such as the Android KitKat 4.4.4.
The LG G4 is the latest smartphone from the G series and it comes with the Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. Unfortunately, as we’ve told you above, this device will most likely not receive the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, which we’re pretty sure that it will disappoint a lot of people. The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop comes with a lot of bug fixes and enhanced functionality.
Unfortunately, there are some rumors which say that the LG G2 smartphone will certainly not even receive the Android M version. The Android M version is already available for the developers as a preview version and it will most likely get released sometime in October 2015. However, not all LG devices will receive the new update and the ones that will be “lucky” enough to receive it will get it a few months later after the new OS will be released.
With other words, the Android M will be rolling out for the LG G4 sometime in late 2015 or early 2016, while the LG G3 will most likely have to wait a bit more.
Do you think that the Android M will be released for LG G2? When do you think that the Android M update will be available for the LG G3 and LG G4?

I know that the ones in the states will most likely 99% not get the update at all. After a few calls to my carrier they have even stated that it will most likely not get any more updates at all and there is no plans to even push the update for stagefreight (which is nothing more then fear mongering) But that is ok. Ill be running it anyway once it hit AOSP
The site didn't said where from did they read about 'new rumors', i don't even know where from did they get those informations, they don't have a source either so, we can just wait untill we see an official screenshot or leak, we can still hope but i doubt we will ever receive 6.0, g2 will be EOL and carriers will not push it because every major build needs bugfixes and then we'll need to wait for 6.x.x to release but it will be too late because of the '2 year update policy', so, i'd rather have a stable 5.1.1 as my last update than 6.0 with lot's of bugs.

Carriers EOL devices long before 2 years. The average time for carriers like ATT is around 9 months and then they EOL the device. Even if LG did send the update to carriers that doesn't mean we will ever see it. They send tons of updates to them that people never see.
this might be newbie question, but if Lg release android M for our devices, and carriers dont push it to our phone, can we still download the rom thought lg server? I mean, like KDZ for 4.4.2 or 5.0.2

Not completely true. They may still post it in their server but it would most likely be made for euro versions of the device that have no carrier branding at all. This how alot of devices get updated after carriers no longer support the device. You would be amazed at how many updates get sent to carriers that users never see from them

Hmm, I was assuming he meant the US carrier versions.
i was talking about the d802 model, so the european version
But if the update is on the LG server maybe someone can hack them, or just lg make possible to download the update from their server
If we have the international version, some modders might able to modify partition to make possible to flash on other variant

Now we have a full-featured 2.8 inch Android 11 smartphone in the format of a classic push-button phone released, having a touchscreen, GPS, BT5.0, IR remote control, dual-band Wi-Fi, two cameras, and all this with MTK A22 chipset. Obviously, QIN F21 Pro is the best in its class.
Unfortunately, QIN F21 Pro is positioned by the manufacturer as a phone for students, hence they closed (and keep closing in the new versions of the firmware!) loopholes and ways to install own third-party software, so there is no standard ability to install any apk locally or through adb, and in the native Chinese market there are only educational programs for China.
The only way to install your own software is the APK renaming and its substitution via PC at the moment when it is being downloaded by the official App Market.
So, guys, any ideas of how to make this phone unchained? It has big potential indeed, so having Google Services would be great, but the bootloader is locked, the FW is signed, MTK flashing tool refuses to flash unsigned paritions.
You can upload the firmware, if you do not have a sucker with uni android tool software

I wish i had full firmware dump available. Unfortunately, just the OTA update.zip
Can you upload the system folder?
You can read the firmware from the device with uni android tool!
I wonder, I've read that this device is rootable (there seems to be some guides on chinese forums about this) I just couldn't find any info regarding if it has a unlocked bootloader? Would LineageOS be possible on this? Global version is coming later this year, according to this video.
Ive ordered 2 cracked Chinese units with the mtk6761 with unlocked bootloader + root + playstore.
The rumored Global version will be using the Unisoc T310 soc with its bootloader cannot be unlocked and very secured based on 2 years old phones running it

Unlocking unisoc bootloader was always a problem because you Need the rsa4096 private key, and generate a unique signature.bin for each device by its own token.

when it comes ill try to backup the firmware making a scatterfile via box so it could be flash using mtk flashtool. maybe you could try that. theres also lots of turtorials how to backup MTK firmware and create a scatterfile with that if the device can boot to preloader mode
cool! does contacts syncs properly? does it has a custom TWRP already? can it boot recovery via adb or other root advanced reboot app?

Do you have full firmware? Can you enter factory flash mode? There are many tools on the internet how to bypass mtk soc securities for dumping and flashing full firmware. Its funny Chinese not sharing the proceedure how to do it when it will help a lot to a Chinese company to sell their phones. I talked to the seller, and he/she said the technician wont teach them how to globalize the phone. They want to send them EVERY UNIT asking money just to remove the phone's Google restrictions. What a greedy way of thinking. Xda should bann those kind of people here .
The phone with google services could kill all past and future kai OS devices. The world deservers that upgrade to every over priced kai OS dumb phones to become not so dumb.

You need to learn to respect peoples wishes , no one ows you nothing , for start.
Because of the colture of over sharing , you got used that everyone will do the job for you.
do you agree that i can choose either to share or not , something i worked a big amount of time on? good.
now for the process , first unlock BL (there is a free solution mtkClient on github), then disable vb meta's signatures ( google that as well ), after that , you need to edit the super.img manualy ( search for super.img's tools , im sure youll find a few ) for removing the restrictions , because of android 11 copy.past restrictions within the device.
NOT A DUMB PHONE ANYMORE!
The portability, stealth ability, and simplicity of a dumbphone + all the apps of a smartphone with 4/64 max variants. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!
It came with bootloader unlocked, with magisk and with playstore but need to tweak a bit to fix the crappy T9 input and store certification which is not a big deal.
get it here, I vouched this store have it. BUY HERE

yes you are right but the foundation of knowledge how you learn to do that stuffs might be a collective contribution from the open free community just like this site. Did you write the program to unlocked it? Did you spent countless hours coding and debugging for the soulution? but yeah you have your own reasons and i will always respect and understand that. We all have our differences on opinions, values, ways, and traditions on how to do stuffs.
People buy the phone and what if the phone suddenlly crashed? the seller/company might not release aftermarket technical support for the phone leaving owners in the dark and potentially waste their money without a means to restoring it back to a working state.
thank you very much for the process.

Question About T-MOBILE mobile data problem

I have encountered a strange problem, I am a T-MOBILE user using 10T, when I use mobile data to use WeChat, as long as the screen is turned off or after a period of time, WeChat will be disconnected to indicate that there is no network, but it is normal for other APPs to use the network . As long as I disconnect the mobile data on the WeChat interface and then turn it on again, it is normal, but the fault remains after the screen is turned off. (There was no problem using it before, but it only appeared in the past few days.) Later, I tried to replace my wife's SIM card (the same as T-MOBILE) and the fault remained. Then I replaced my friend's AT&T SIM and the problem didn't reappear. I want to solve why T-MOBILE's SIM card cannot be used on WeChat on 10T (but there has been no problem before. It just appeared suddenly these days), is there any way to solve it, change the frequency band?
I'm having similar problem with T-mobile after the latest update. I toggle airplane mode and everything works fine until I turn off screen.
Haven't been able to find a solution
It seems that it should be a system problem. I hope that an update will be released soon to solve this problem. Especially for Chinese, WeChat is too important! I want to downgrade, but ONEPLUS has not unlocked the boot, and MSM TOOL. I have always been a loyal user of OnePlus, (6, 7PRO, 8T and 10T) expressed disappointment with OnePlus.
I updated to 13 EU beta and everything seems to working properly
Thanks @saulh972, I tried it too and updated to 13 EU beta for one of my customer mobile, it working and customer satisfied for the solution. Thanks
I also tried to upgrade to the European version of Android 13 beta, but my 10T is the international version (CPH2417), how to upgrade to the European version? If I want to flash back to the international version at that time, can I?

There's an update apk. that needs to be installed in order to update. Not sure about flashing back I figured once the NA 13 comes i would just flash that.
My concern is that once you flash the European ROM, you can't flash back to the US ROM. I can only use 8T now, I hope OnePlus can update the system as soon as possible to solve the current problem. I don't think my next phone will be a OnePlus. Thanks for your help.

The GLO beta is out
I have upgraded to the beta version of GLO Android 13, and the phone model has changed from 2417 to 2415. I don't know if ONEPLUS will release the beta version of the US version of Android 13 or the full ROM of the official version of Android 13. And I noticed that the beta version does not have the option to check for updates, and when the official version of Android 13 is launched, it will not be able to update online. Then I need to flash back to Android 12 and clear all data. If I don't launch the full 2417 ROM, I can only use the 2415 ROM all the time.

on the GLO version just turn on developer mode and then you can get local install just like you could in the Oneplus old days on the NA version
Do not upgrade the C11 version. When I woke up this morning, the system automatically upgraded, and now the same problem occurs again. Are the engineers of ONEPLUS really eating ****?

Having the exact same issue here, SAME PHONE, SAME CARRIER, SAME ISSUE. Here's little bit about my timeline:
1. On Nov.5, I received my 10T, I get on hand and play around with it for little bit and at this time the we chat it's still working.
2. On Nov.6, the second day I have the phone, I updated it to whatever the latest version of oxygen 12, and since from now my wechat stop working when using cellular.
3. Two or three days after, I decided to install the GLO version of OxygenOS 13 open beta 1, and at this time WeChat is working again.
4. Yesterday, Nov.22, my phone has installed an auto update to open beta 2, and now my WeChat can't not run under cellular AGAIN!!???
I wonder WTH has the op software team done and I wonder did they really care much about their customers experience, not even mentioning that a weeks delay on my shipping and that out-date & misleading of that trade-in guide sheet. I wouldn't buy any of op phones again in NA if there are any other better options even like vivo or iqoo.

BTW I still have my old OnePlus 8 in hand so I test it out with the same sim card and running WeChat on that phone for a while and it's working fine. So this might be an issue just to specificly the 1+10T users with T-Mobile cellular network.
There is a way that can temporarily resolve the problem, which you can set up an identical APN in the setting, with only one small chang that you will need to allow both iPv4 and iPv6 active for the same time. I'm not a tech dude in this but yea that's the only solution I found for now. If you need help just reply my msg here and I will send you the figure in here or through WeChat.
How did you solve the problem? Please give me tutorial. Thanks!

Simply add this apn to your network setting, just make sure for APN protocol (APN协议 in the pic) you want to set IPv4/IPv6, not IPv6 only.

This could temporarily resolve the problem, but sometime the phone itself will switch back to the default APN which is what you don't want and annoying. If for some reason the WeChat didn't work again just go check back the APN setting and switch to the APN above.
