Free MetroPCS tethering (APN mod) - Huawei Ascend Mate 2

If you are on MetroPcs and don't want to pay extra for the tethering, follow this guide!
Under settings>mobile networks>acces point names , add a new apn with the same information as your regular one (making a duplicate basically, just make sure the apn name differs).. but on the APN Type, make sure it says this : default, supl, hipri, dun
Basically just add the comma dun part compared to your regular apn . That's it! Now just make this your default apn and tether away with no hiccups on LTE. I'm on a family plan with my mom and i pay 55$ for my phone service monthly, TRUE unlimited everything on T-Mobile's network. Best pre-paid deal ever. Have been tethering for months with dozens of GBs tethered monthly without ever being capped or confronted about it by metro ha . Just my two cents!

What was your experience before this? I'm tethering now on postpaid T-Mobile with no changes at all.

Could we be canceled after tethering too much data?

I would get a metropcs splash screen on the browser of the device i was trying to connect saying i don't have that feature in my plan . This change bypasses it ... Is it included in your plan?

No, at least my personal experience ( I've tethered about 30-50gbs of data monthly with zero issues ) They don't care .

Roger. I have 3 gigs of tethering on my postpaid unlimited T-Mobile plan. I've tethered a few gigs the last few days and the ma.web.2go website still has me as the 2.1 gigs tethered I had used before swapping my sim from my T-Mobile Note 2.

Nice then ha, i noticed also that my previous data usage was wiped when transferring my metropcs sim onto the HAM2 . This device plays along well with both USB and Wifi tethering .

That's just what pull from phone usage, no tethering.......I once read someone tethering 100-200gbs from metro pcs. I might just stick with TWC for home internet lol

ok, I followed step by step your guide, but when I switch ON Mobile Hotspot to run the wifi tether a popup screen show up and ask me to upgrade my service, then I click on upgrade, open the browser and send me to http://mpcs.me/hot5/ , they want me to put my ph number and pin to confirm. Am I doing something wrong or metropcs fixed this to stop people?

hmm maybe try a user agent switcher if you are on a chrome. i had to do that and changed it to a safari user agent (Chrome app store-search user agent switcher) ...maybe attach some screenshots of your apn to see if you did everything correct?

Hi, would this work on a metropcs gsm samsung galaxy avant, phone, newly activated, locked, no root. Do i just add a new apn to match the metropcs one and add ",dun" to the apn type?

When I have turned on portable hotspot on my mate2, I have never had a metro popup on the devices I'm letting connect. I have the CC varient with B148 firmware if that makes a difference. Never had to do an APN mod and its been working fine. No tethering paid for

Time to try this. I've been averaging 30-50 gigs tethered a month on postpaid T-Mobile with no mods or problems at all. Now it's still working but it's counting data tethered.
Edit-no data at all. Any advice for doing this on T-Mobile?
Edit 2- rebooted my phone, no more tethering data used since. I hate electronics...

This continue working or not
Sent from my SM-G386T1 using XDA Free mobile app

It's still working for me, i am on metropcs though.. I am not sure if this mod works with postpaid t-mobile.. Like stated before, you might need a user agent changer if you are tethering to a non-mobile device (ex laptop, pc)

I am not sure, doesn't hurt to try. You can always go back to the old apn settings.

Did it work for you? Bit confused ha

What's happening now is that only a small percentage of my tethering usage is being logged. I don't know why and haven't figured out what usage is tripping it.

Using an LG Thrive with a AT&T NON-Data plan

Is this possible? In a perfect world I could go to Best Buy, grab a GoPhone LG Thrive, pop my wifes non data family plan sim in there, somehow block 3g, and she could keep her current plan untouched and use WiFi for the occasionaly internet usage.
Thoughts?
I don't remember the settings in stock 2.2 Froyo, but on the CM7 roms there are widgets to set data 2G, 2G/3G, 3G and on/off. You can probably download an app that'll do that.
I'm pretty sure that will block the data, but my fear is that as soon as AT&T recognizes the model number on the phone they will add a data plan to the account.
Froyo 2.2 including LG Thrive has Data ON/OFF switch, so don't bother using the phone without data plan. You can also delete the APN settings, so the phone cannot use data even the latter is enabled. It sounds very wierd the operator to activate a data plan without your permission.

Wi-Fi will work. Wi-Fi has a separate switch. There is a switch that turns on/off only the 3G/EDGE/GPRS data.

cool, but I just hope it's not like the iphone in that they require a data plan to even pop you sim card in it.
1st review on amazon seems to confirm my fear... "Be aware AT&T will make you buy a data plan for $5 per month for 10 MB, even if you never use it because it's a smart phone. "
I read that LG Thrive goes with a prepaid plan, so you buy the phone and don't use the new sim...and you can insert your wife's sim.

I vaguely recall reading about this new "feature". Happened around the time the new iThing came out. Reading around a little, it seems that more recent contracts have clauses that let them do this.
Some posts mentioned that BEFORE you use the smartphone, to call ATT and place a data-block on the account. Seems to have worked for some.
So has anyone successfully purchased a LG Thrive, popped an AT&T post-paid SIM in and use it without a data plan?
You may want to consider buying an Optimus T, unlocking it and using it with ATT. Both are GSM. You'll then have access to all the dev here and not be bound to ATTs draconian crap.

it can be used without a dataplan if you use your own sim card. I bought one for my daughter and since I was at the end of my billing cycle I decide to wait until the new billing cycle to add the data plan, she was using the phone without problems for over a week, and was able to use wife for data. One thing is that when you call ATT to add the Data Plan you need to give a different IMIE cuz once they try to add the IMEI of the GO phone the system will say the phone can not provisioned with premium Data plans. What I did was just to gave her my Captivate IMEI since it was never registered with ATT.

[Q] unlocked at&t gs2 on at&t network

I want to use the GS2 without paying the monthly data plan, sort of as a wifi only device. Anybody know if I get an S2 off Craigslist and unlock it, will at&t recognize the phone and slap on the monthly data plan?
In other words do they have the IMEI sweeps like they did for unlocked IPhones?
Thnx!
if you get one and erased all the APN info from it, it will never connect to the Mobile Data from ATT... you will never get charged.
You don't even need to unlock it, if you are staying with AT&T.
I'm talking bout their mandatory smartphone plan.
Or if I don't buy it from them they won't add it ?
I've heard that if it picks up an IMEI from any smartphone registered on the network, it will add the smartphone data package. But I can't confirm this.
As long as you're using a phone released by AT&T, it will know it is a Smartphone by looking up the IMEI because AT&T knows every phone it releases. It doesn't matter where you bought it.
The only chance for you to avoid the data plan is buy a Smartphone that was not released by AT&T. Then again, chances are those phone mostly don't support all the AT&T's 3G/4G bands.
You can use a smartphone from At&t just call customer service and have them WIX block the line in use, I did it with my HTC Fuze before and on the bill it showed "Data Opt-Out"
Will that still let me send and recieve MMS?
Is it the same as a Data Block?
thnx
the new phones use a special sim/gsm, and in order to get network access you have to register the APN (forgive me if I have the names wrong). I've already got the unlimited data plan, and was also thinking of buying a phone so that I can easily be grandfathered. No dice, you have to call them to provision the phone/sim, and then I'm sure they will say you have to go with the limited data plan (charges above a certain usage). Looks like I'm going to have to call and ***** at them until I get them to grandfather me. I'm going to be super pissed if they don't do it. Isn't Verizon and sprint offering unlimited?
I may not need it now, but once I get this GS2 I believe I will be using alot more data.

Verizon no longer offers unlimited. Sprint does. T-Mobile sort of does(No overages. Just slow speeds.)
If you can provision the phone to use the wap.cingular APN, then you might (MIGHT) be able to slide under the radar. This is what we have done with my son's iphone 3gs and iphone 4 for a couple of years now. The system still reports that it is an iphone from the IMEI number but the feature is the $10.00 unlimited non-smartphone plan. As far as I know, there are no automated sweeps that look for smartphones with the wrong data plan. It looks at what APN the phone requests and then matches that to how your account is provisioned. If it tries to connect to a smartphone APN, and no provision is on the account for it, one is automatically added.
I've even had CS reps notice the iphone on his account with the $10.00 plan and breeze through it like it didn't even matter to them.
If you can change the SGS2 APN to use the wap APN, then the key is to have your SIM inserted into a non-smartphone and add the unlimited data package before placing the SIM into your SGS2 that has had its APN changed.
One thing I don't know is if you will get HSPA speeds on wap.cingular. I know 3G works well.

Yes, its Data block from At&t's side and so they won't add a data plan. I don't know if MMS will work cause at that time I only remember using text which was working fine.
I got my captivate with an upgrade from att of course. lol anyways the imei number got messed up cause I flashed a bad rom or something. I had some issue's with my phone, and I called att. They told me that I haven't been using my captivate. They said I was using an unknown phone. My point is backup your efs folder. Delete the one on the phone reboot your phone, and att will never know you have been using a smartphone on your account. When ever you want you can put the backed up efs folder on the phone, and the imei number will register again.
Are you saying backup and delete the whole folder? Or the sub folder with the imei in it?

Q free wifi tethering

Im thinking about jumping ship from android (evo 4g) to the titan. One of the biggest things holding me back is the ability to tether for free via USB and wifi with android. Is this an option with the titan?

I have the unlocked UK version of the phone and it does have Internet Connection Sharing in settings for sharing via wifi. Not sure if other versions of the phone will have it. AT&T phones will probably come with it locked down, not sure if unlocking the phone will also allow access to Internet Connection Sharing.
Thanks for the info. Hopefully unlocking the phone will let me tether it. I'm going to wait and see if it works before I buy it.
Would also love some more info. Was able to stealth-tether with my Focus without unlocking/jailbreaking, and that was super-handy since I do it so rarely and don't want to have to add it to my plan...
Now the Focus is dead and I'm 99% likely to be purchasing a Titan tomorrow.

Looks like expansys is carrying the us version now with the hspa+ 850,1900,2100 bands. That one looks non carrier branded so it should work with internet connection sharing. Really curious if someone has a AT&T Titan they have unlocked that allows ICS.

I have it unlocked on Telus. Just tried the internet sharing and funny enough it still says to contact ATT or dial 611 lol.. So I'm with Telus yet I need to contact ATT?? Right..
I have SIM-FREE UK version and can tether on Giffgaff gigabags. No issues at all. No jailbreaking needed, no unlocking of any sorts.
Sounds like the conclusion here is the unlocked unbranded version is okay to to use Internet Sharing.
AT&T locked or unlocked (like me) you are out of luck.
However I'm curious who can actually unlock this feature for an unlocked ATT model. Your current carrier? ATT directly? HTC?
Or are you just screwed?

I was trying to get tethering working as well (at&t titan on Rogers) i phoned around and the HTC rep said tethering needs to be added onto my account. I have a 6GB data plan that does not include tethering (i know rogers says anything over 1GB has it but technically my account does not include it). The Rogers Rep said i would need ot go down to a 1GB plan for them to addon tethering to my account and then the phone should authenticate and work.
Is anyone here able to test that out and confirm?
---------- Post added at 03:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:20 AM ----------
my current theory is that the at&t phone actually authenticates back to the carrier to verify tethering is added onto the account rather than just sharing out its current internet connetion.
if anyone can test and get back to us it might be helpfull

I'd be surprised if that actually worked. However I have speculated a way that should allow unlocked ATT branded Titan users like us to be able to use Internet Sharing. Sadly this won't be an option until the next MS Windows Phone update is rolled out. I'll explain..
When I had my HD7 it was T-Mobile branded unlocked on Wind Mobile. At first it was filled with all kinds of T-Mo apps etc and similarly locked to T-Mo within the OS. But once the updates starting rolling out from MS I forced them to my phone rather than waiting for T-Mo and it essentially made it become unbranded. The Internet Sharing feature was available as an update on my HD7 when the unbranded models received theirs and it was fully functional. So whenever MS rolls out whatever next update there is forcing it to our Titans should make it fully unbranded and at the same time unlock our Internet Sharing feature.
I'm with At&t and can verify that once I switched my plan from unlimited to "4g with tethering" I've been able to use Wifi Sharing. In fact i'm using it right now.
I think it's a value in the registry to check or not. We'll see once we can edit it.
Sent from my PI39100 using Board Express
Add me to the list of ppl curious how to do it for free. I very rarely use the option, but I'd like it nonetheless...
Titan on Rogers
I have an AT&T branded Titan unlocked running on Rogers. I had a 1GB plan without tethering and I was getting teh same issue when I tried to enable tethering. So, I phoned Rogers and now I have a 6GB plan which has tethering enabled.
Restarted my phone, same issue.
I think that in order for this to work either I have to update the phone so that it is unbranded (how would I do this?) OR there is a registery key or file that needs to be changed so that the check to the carrier no longer happens.
Hmmmmm....
I think i know what needs to be done. My buddy has a Samsung Focus Flash from At&t (forgot to check but i assume it would give him the same At&t tethering message we're all getting).
Anyways we interop unlocked it and pushed the wifi tethering patch for WP7 and my guess it overwrote the At&t lockdown because he is able to tether without any issues.
Good news is we can get it working - bad news we have to wait for someone to interop unlock the Titan - which so far hasn't been done
This whole thing with tethering is flat getting old. We should have it std on the phone if we have an unlimited plan like I do and some of the others do. This sucks and is a good reason to take our business elsewhere where the feature is included.
I really don't use it much but that is not the point.
Okay, I'm done ranting and raving about this and I am back to normal.

[Q] HTC Titan II: Unlock/Android Inquiry

Hi everyone,
My wife just got a FREE HTC Titan II from the MS Challenge today. I guess they were completely out of stock on the HTC Titan so they gave us the Titan II.
Now being an Android guy myself with no interest in coming to Windows phone I am very new to the whole windows phone world. I do have a couple questions that I don't see in the thread that I would like to ask, everything else I think I can handle with the search button.
First, my wife and I have T-Mobile and we would like to unlock the phone to use on T-Mobile. I am very aware that I am not going to get 3G or 4G until next year, but in the mean time whats the best recommended place to get a unlock code that would work for this?
Second, Is there currently, or in the works a plan to port Android to the HTC Titan II. If so and direction/links or info would be awesome.
Third, is there anything else that anyone can think of that I would need to fun this phone on T-Mobile?
The search button didn't work all that great for me, so thank you everyone for this very noob question.

1. There are some Threads about unlocking sites .. One Two
2. No, Even though the Sensation XL is very similar I highly doubt android will ever run on the Titan II... Sure if alot of interest was taken on the Titan II and talented developers jumped ship then sure anything is possible.. But its a lonely place around here.
3. Besides having it sim unlocked you can download "Connection Setup" from the HTC apps in the Market to load the proper APN's and MMS settings.. Once you have those setup you shouldn't have data issues.
Thank you so much!!! Really helpful. I really do hope with the Windows Challenge thing alot more people join this Dev section.

I think connection setup will feed in the pre-entered APN settings automatically.
However, if after connection setup + reboot - you don't get the 3g connection then you might have to add the APN manually. But I highly doubt you would have to do anything manually.

Gotcha, thank you.
You shouldn't have to mess with APNs. Just get HTC Connection Setup and let it run -- it will configure everything correctly and you will have data (2G in this case due to the UMTS frequency discrepancy between AT&T and T-Mobile), SMS, and MMS.
I have done this as recently as yesterday with a Titan and a Radar.

Reboot the phone multiple times and never had to enter the code again. Got the code in 5 minutes after purchase.
Did you ever get the phone working on tmobile?
Not sure yet, I will try later today and see.
Does the titan II need to be unlocked to use the htc connection setup's manual features? I have straight talk and the ATT APN works for accessing the 4G but doesn't allow picture messaging. Is there another apn editor I can use or do I have to unlock to access those settings?
Good question, I honestly don't know. I would assume not if all it does is update the APN.

Doesn't Connection Setup have a Manual Setup option in its settings?

There is manual 'selection' option, but doesn't let you enter APN settings. It's the same case with Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, Asda mobile, Vectone mobile, Lebara mobile and Lyca mobile in the UK.

yeah I was wondering if that's still the case with unlocked Sims.

[Q] Grandfathered T-Mobile $5 data plan on Galaxy S5?

Is there any way for me to get my grandfathered $5/month "Preferred Phone First Unlimited Web Only" data plan to work on a Galaxy S5?
Currently I am told "Your data plan does not work on this device", but it works fine on an HTC Radar 4G.
I'm hoping to at least get some part of the data plan working on this phone, even if some features might be limited (i.e. even if I can only check email, that's better than nothing)... currently I can't use my data plan at all on this phone.

Try setting it to only 4g and changing your APN to the non LTE.

Which APN do you mean? If you mean epc.tmobile.com, it doesn't work -- I still get the same error as I did with fast.t-mobile.com (yup I switched to WCDMA/GSM, and verified LTE was off).

Yup I just replied to that one right now.
Question though: is WCDMA/GSM 3G or 4G? Or is it a marketing ambiguity? I'm confused because online sources say WCDMA is 3G whereas the phone changes from "4G LTE" to "4G" (not "3G") when I switch to that...

Just go to settings then about phone and click Status and see what type of network you are connected to . It will say UMTS or HSPA+ .Depending where you are will decide which one . I just turned my phone to that setting GSM/WCDMA and I am showing HSPA+ . So that means you should get HSPA+42 which isnt bad at all here in saint louis .. I see actual DL speeds of up to 20Mbps on HSPA+42 . Did you call TMOBILE and tell them about your problem ? I wouold think if you are grandfathered in then they should take care of your problem by offering the true unlimited on LTE ..Unless that isnt in the original contractT

Oh I see, I'll take a look under the status then.
No I haven't tried calling T-Mobile, and frankly I don't know what our original contract looks like (I don't think I have a copy, and if I ask them to send me a copy I'm not sure I could trust them to have not changed the terms).
I'm also worried if the wrong rep sees the plan, he/she will mess it up -- most of them have a tendency to go to great lengths to get you off the grandfathered plans (they aren't even all aware that the plan exists) so it's not worth the risk for me at the moment.
If you log into your tmobile account it should blaintently show that you have the $5 data . I dont think there is anyway they could mess that up .. If I had UNlimited I would defenitely want to use LTE .

Well it says "Preferred Phone First Unlimited Web Only", but like I said, I've read more than on horror story about how representatives have messed it up... if I have to go that direction I will, but I'm not convinced yet that I do.

When you say "unlimited web only" that is different then "unlimited data". Those are very old plans that were out for specific phones. In order to get this to work, you are going to have to Google a lot and figure out the proper apn settings. What does the Radar 4G specify as its APN settings? I would try to get as much information from that phone as I could. Secondly, it could be that T-Mobile is reading the device you are using and then not allowing it to work on their end.

Yes Elsebb commented below and what he said is what you should go with ... i didnt think about the web only thing . that is completely different. You need to figure out the correct APN settings and go with that . I think it might be impossible to use LTE with it . cant really hide LTE

It doesn't seem to be related to the APN at all. I just tried another new Android 4.4.2 phone (I'll avoid mentioning what kind since I don't want T-Mobile to see this and block it =P) and it works just fine on LTE with the typical fast.t-mobile.com APN.
I guess that means it's based on the IMEI, meaning you just have to find a brand/model that works, so there isn't much hope for the S5.

You know what, i remember when i was getting a new phone carrier that i heard of Go Phone and that if you purchased a Go SIM for an ATT phone, it simply won't work, but if you bought a GSM phone and unlocked it (one that wasn't ATT branded) it worked perfectly.
I wonder if you are experiencing something similar. The S5 that you have, is it T-Mobile branded? And if it is, is the Android 4.4.2 phone you just tried now T-Mobile branded? That might be the issue.

That's possible but somewhat unlikely since my HTC Radar was also T-Mobile branded just like my S5. I can't rule it out without testing it on an unlocked phone.

No, but I don't have any reason to believe LTE is relevant here (it never seems to make a difference in any scenario).

The thing I'm getting at is that phone because it doesn't have lte, is an "approved" T-Mobile phone that works with that plan. See if you can get an unlocked att s5 and see if it works.
