[Q] Using S as standalone. Changing APNs??? - Samsung Gear S

Does anyone know how to add or modify the APN settings? I bought an AT&T branded Gear, full price, and am trying to get the mobile Internet working with my Straight Talk (AT&T) account. Everything works, but this.... Thanks

I'm using SM-R750D(from DoCoMo) in Japan. I can show APN setting via
Settings->Connections->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names->Intetnet Connection.
But I cannnot edit APN setting. It's locks to sp-mode(APN=spmode.ne.jp).
I inquired for APN editing to Samsung customer support, and waiting answer for 2 weeks.
Do you edit APN ? or Lock to AT&T's APN ?
best regards,
riki0081 from Japan.

Interesting. Which model do you have? Did it add the ability to create a new APN in mobile settings?

I cannnot found software update for my Gear S.
Gear Manager says "The latest updates have already been installed."
Software version is R750DOMUBNJ7.

Huh, the ATT model is listed as SM-R750A.
I had to remove the tick from the auto-update and reboot both in order for it to finally recognize that there was an update. Try that.

Good to hear. However, be mindful of future updates to the gear manager and gear itself.
Last night an update was available for the Phone's Gear Manager... I downloaded and found that after the install, the remote connection was not functioning anymore and the "New APN" function on both the data and MMS had been greyed out again... Thankfully, my ST APN that I had created was still there... But now the MMS APN was locked again on ATT. A full reset had to be performed on the watch and the gear app required an reinstall in order to get the remote working again.
I know that ATT and Samsung are working closely on making sure that the remote functions only work with phones and watches that are contracted and connected with ATTs network ONLY.
After some tinkering, the remote connection now works again even though my main phone is ATT and the watch is Straight Talk. Hopefully, I can get it to stay that way.
As a cautionary, I would do backups of both the watch and phone before applying updates.

Hi, i am planning to buy this watch but here are my concerns:
I'm planning to put my data sim on the Gear S and my company is having 2 APNs, one for WORK and one for INTERNET, so one of my question is, Can i set two APNs on gear S and interchange with it quickly?
My other question is, when my gear S has a 3g sim on it(only data sim) and my phone does not have internet, when i pair my phone WITHOUT INTERNET, will it have an internet thru my gear S data sim?
thanks.

OK, on the locked ATT model only after the latest ...NY7 Tizen update will you be able to change and/or modify the Data side APN. The SMS side APN did get updated as well, however, the updated interface is grayed out and has been locked, nor can you add a new one to my knowledge.
Once unlocked tho, everything can be modified.
The Data APN does allow for you to create multiple APN templates that would be easy to switch back and forth... But, the watch will require a reboot each time you do so.
2nd question:
No, at this time the watch does not have tethering (3G watch>phone) capabilities. It is designed to work the opposite way. With the limited apps in the Tizen store, I doubt that this is something that can be achieved.... yet.
I would contact one of the Tizen DEVs and see what they say.
Hope this helps.

Also, I can only add a new APN if you have network "always on" selected, instead of "auto", otherwise the APN settings are greyed out. I wonder if this may be the actual reason why the settings appear to be locked for some of you.

[Q] Select a network operator - what's the correct setting?

This is a daft question but I flashed a rom that messed up my APN settings.
I'm on contract with 3 (uk).
In 'Network Operators' under the list of available networks should I choose 'select automatically' or should I manually select 3 from the list of networks.
Automatically should work just fine.
Thanks. If its on automatically select I wont get charged roaming costs if it goes onto another network will I?
I assume you're using a 3G UK device in the UK with a UK sim card? If you are the device will use the 3G UK network.
Great, thanks for clarifying that. I didnt fancy having to explain a big unexpected bill to the wife

Hello,
I recently put the GPe rom in my HTC One, and have had network problems related to my APN.
Could anyone who HAS an AT&T HTC One post their APN settings so I could fix this problem.
Thanks in advance!

I just put GPe on this morning, and I've had some problems too. I went to a place I usually have good coverage, but I had no *data* coverage. My wife had good coverage there, including data.

Delete stock APN on HTC One M7 (AT&T)
Hello everyone.
Introduction. I have unlocked HTC One M7 (AT&T) with stock Jelly Bean 4.3 ROM + AT&T sim card with 3G data service (Not 4G/LTE).
As I have sim card specifically with 3G data it works only with APN settings on phones - wap.cingular. It doesn't work with others APN settings such as "phone" for LTE data service.
HTC One M7 AT&T version has pre-setted APN settings for LTE data service (APN: "phone").
Problem is when I try to enter new APN (wap.cingular) it says "This APN is not allowed on this device".
I rooted this phone and tried to find /system/etc/apns-conf.XML file as for One X but apns-conf.xml file doesn't exist in One M7, I searched entire root content on it. There other .xml files with wifi settings etc. Also tried to find similar files on other folders but with no luck.
Anybody knows what file on M7 contains this settings or how to remove restrictions for setting wap.cingular APN?
Thanks

A T-mobile phone won't work on the ATT network even with the APN settings. The radio in the Tmo phone works on a different frequency.
And which was that for ?.. does this also maybe apply to the m8 and or m9 because the restrictions some are on them as well... GSM models are different though tmobile far as I know can be lifted if u get unlock code for them , I called tmobile and they told me and if I keep there service for at least 6 months they would provide me the unlock keys ?.. what!?. I was like this is ridiculous because I thought htc would provide the keys for this matter?....

i am using the C6802 on T-Mobile without issue. I think i see a typo in your settings, under MMSC... toward the end it should be 'mms', not 'mmd'.
Edit: you are probably doing this but of course you have to save the APN after entering the info, and then click the dot to enable it

just letting you know, i got my girlfriend an xperia z, and it came with a brand new sim card, so i put it in and got the same error as you did, since there is no service or account associated with the sim card. when i click on the notification it goes to a page with different T-Mobile service plans. i wonder, did your service run out or something?
also i see in the screenies that you are getting a signal, but probably your account is not active to actually use data.

[Solved] Cyanogenmod cannot connect to data network on Bmobile (MVNO)

I've brought a Atrix and tried to install a ROM from cyanogenmod. It's the CM10 for atrix made by epinter. It's not an official one, but most people said it's OK. Everything worked great.
However, it cannot connect to the data network, it keep showing "Connecting". I tried to ask the carrier, and they said that my cellphone was trying to connect to their network, but with a wrong username/password. I've checked the informations a lot of times.
I tried several versions of cyanogenmod, CM10 and CM10.1 and even a stable CM7, but none could connect.
Does anyone know how to fix it?
edit: I can do/get calls and messages. On a stock ROM it works fine.
ps.: My carrier is Japan Bmobile, which uses the NTT Docomo network. My phone says that my carrier is Docomo, but the APN is from Bmobile.

Ok. So you can connect to the network (ie, you can make phone calls), but you can't connect to the internet?
you got 2 options: either create the apn manually (the settings must be all over the internet), or ask them to push it to your cellphone. My carrier can do this, and you don't need to configure anything else.

Yes, I can make calls and send messages.
When they sent me the SIM card, they also send the APN information. I had to configure it manually.
Now, I'm using a stock ROM. After I inserted the APN manually, it connects. But it's a old version of Android (2.3.4), and since it sucks, I would like to try to use a newer version.
Must be something related to the carrier. Because I set the apn manually just to try, on cm10.1, and it connects fine.

Good Point, Somehow I skipped that part of your answer. Nope, it's a full blown carrier
Thanks for your promptly help.
I saw somewhere that there's a problem with android and MVNOs. I don't know exactly why they are considered as a roaming network. I'll try to flash it again on weekend and test it using roaming options.
edit: Just try it again, and it failed. According to android I'm not in roaming as the other people on internet said they were when using a MVNO.
I just found how to fix it in other page.
It seems to be a problem with a lot of Motorola devices.
To fix it, you have to force the APN user and password.
In order to do that, you have to edit the file "/system/etc/ppp/peers/pppd-ril.options" (requires root)
...
user [email protected] → user [email protected]
password NotUsed → password bmobile
...
After that, it worked perfectly.

Unable to connect to my mobile network

I recently purchased a refurbished phone Samsung Galaxy S21 5G. I just got it yesterday, and found that I am not able to use my mobile network. The sale said it is factory unlocked, and according to the descriptions, it should work just fine with my US Mobile SuperLTE network as well. When I switched on the phone, I see Verizon on the screen and so, I assume that it was locked to Verizon in the past.
When I tried to change the network settings, specifically the APN settings, I get the message "Access Point Name settings are not available for this user." The three dots on the top with reset to default is also greyed out along with Network mode in the previous page. When I click Network Operators and try to connect to the network manually, I am only able to connect to Verizon Wireless and no other. But, calling and messaging seems to work fine. Is it that the unlock process has not been completed properly? Did any of you face the same problem before? It would be great if there is something that I could do to unblock the APN settings as the rest of the phone works really well. The specific model is SM-G991U.
Thanks!

So, you need to go into the settings menu and find about phone, software info. What you want to find is the CSC information.
It will basically look something like this: XAA / XAA-XAA / XAA (or some other letters like VZW or ATT or TMB etc etc.
What taht will tell you is very helpful in determining what rom the phone is running and what kind of device it was originally. Find that in your device and post it and people will help you to figure out what it means.

So the csc info is complicated, I'm no expert on it. But it does look like the OYN indicates it's a multi csc rom. It does have XAA as a part of the code, and that indicates it's 'open' for that specific part. But all the others are VZW. So it's running a vzw rom, obviously.
Your sim US Mobile uses both verizon and t-mobile networks. So it working for calls and texts makes sense, as a vzw phone. You could use patched Odin and flash a different (open) rom, but first you should verify that the device really is unlocked from vzw.
Best way to do that would probably be to insert another carriers sim card and see if it can make calls / texts. If not, it's not unlocked. But are you saying everything works now except mobile data? IOW, no internet access?
I had an international sim card at hand and I put it in. Interestingly the APN settings are no longer blocked. But, I do get a notification from setup wizard saying the inserted sim is not from Verizon and some services may not be available. But, messaging still seemed to work and I was also receiving 4G.

Oh then yer okay. That message from verizon can be gotten rid of a couple of ways; 1) use adb commands to disable the specific packages 2) use patched Odin and flash a different rom
VZW is the only rom I think that does that, and it's very annoying. I don't remember exactly which packages have to be disabled, but search google and use xda and vzw in keywords and u should find it.
The 2nd option would be my choice. It would do away with vzw crap and with an open rom you may find volte and vowifi will work also.
cheers
Thank you so much for your reply. That sounds great! To just give it a try, I tried putting in a TMobile sim and phone restarted to install software for TMobile. After that the APN settings were unlocked and now I am also able to connect to the internet using my US Moblile sim. The only problem is the the network mode is greyed out.
This rom I think only recognizes network from major telecom providers. So, just flashing with an unlocked rom would just help to unlock all the features and also remove telecom specific crap. I will try to flash it today.
Thank you again!
I also just flashed the stock firmware which is fully unlocked. And there is no bloatware from telecom OEM's. I am now able to use the network and set the APN's, but the Network Mode is still greyed out. Is it possible to know why? I am guessing that if the phone is fully unlocked, I should be able to change the Network Mode. Is there any other info that I can give you to help understand what is happening? I do not see vowifi as well.
