Gear S in... Moto 360 out... - Samsung Gear S

I started with an original pebble from kickstarter which was great to being with....
I moved onto the original gear and then the Gear Neo which I thought would be my long term smart watch... until the moto 360 turned up...
The moto 360 had everything I wanted but an issue between it and my Google glass has made me purchase the gear s...
And you know what?!? I love it and the moto 360 will be getting sold ASAP as I can't see myself using it at all...
The gear s screen is just gorgeous and the look on the wrist is quite futuristic and looks advanced which I love.
Here is a pic of the 360 and gear s next to each other.
Can't wait for more apps and clock faces to come out but for now I'm loving the lcd one I bought on the app store.

I am keeping both. I find the Moto 360 has a "smarter" look. It looks like a formal timepiece, particularly the silver one. The Gear S looks very futuristic. I wish they had done something more interesting with the strap on the Gear S. The Black version is quite plain, and the white version is rather loud! I am waiting for the Mocha strap to come out for the Gear S. But regardless of which strap, it will never look that formal. I do have the same issue with Glass vs Android Wear, but I think it will get resolved in a couple of months.

Very nice. You have 2 great devices right there.

What app did you buy to make your phone look like that? That looks nice

It's on the galaxy apps store... called digital watch 2. Cost £1.20.
Fits in perfect with the styling and the geekiness of the watch ha.

Ps4 and Xbox 360 haha.
Battery seems good up to now. Not charged it yet and it's just hit 20% which isn't too bad.

I just sold the Moto 360 for the Gear S. While I am digging the hardware on the S, I miss some of the Google integration of the 360.
I wish someone for some platform would make a decent Google Voice app. (I know I'm dreaming)

So... how much for the 360???

What can I say? I am a gadget geek
I need to stop buying every gadget going, but I do have a particular interest in "wear" technology. The most disappointing actually is Google Glass. Aside from the outrageous price tag, it attracts the wrong kind of attention in public places, and secondly, it relies on a window towards the periphery of your vision. We are not quite at the augmented reality yet, where a display is built-in to the lens of your glasses overlaying everything you are seeing....but I am sure it will be coming!

Aftermath of Galaxy Note Super Bowl ad

When I first saw the commercial I thought it was funny, a little cheesy, but I liked it. Yet at the same time I don't think that it advertised the device well. Immediately after the commercial was aired, there were alot of negative comments on twitter in regards to the s-pen. People were confused and assumed the device required the s-pen for all functions. Even reading the comments on the YouTube video for the commercial and various blogs, alot of people assume the device is taking a step back by offering the stylus -- since that's what the commercial seemed to focus on unfortunately.
And as funny as it is to see butthurt ifools cry about Samsung bashing them, it might not have been the best move by them. The commercial starts by insulting apple fanboys/girls because they are in line waiting for the iphone, yet tells them to basically get in line for the note. I'm all for apple bashing but I think it could have atleast been done in a better manner.
So Samsung has now sort of dug a hole for themselves with the Gnote I think. People in the U.S. now think it requires a stylus and others who don't favor Samsung devices hate them more.
Check out the comments:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgfknZidYq0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
On the bright side though any publicity can still be good publicity.

They should have started the commercial out by hammering in how great the screen size is... get people hooked on media, video chat, browsing, and then... BOOM. OH LOOK IT ALSO HAS A PEN IN THIS ****. oh daaaamn. Let it be a bonus feature to the average smart phone user, while still allowing the business man or note taker to interpret the pen as the main selling point.
yup i must say i agree with both of your comments regarding the commercial.
esp for a super bowl ad...it should've been much better

I'm looking forward to using my note along side my ipad2 personally. They both fit different roles imo and I don't care what anyone thinks about either device when I use them in public.

+2.. This device will be around for a long time to come... relax... There's a website for the Note on Samsungs site w/ extra videos and specs, why spend $$ twice on the something they already have on their site? Instead why not have a hoopla commercial that waves the flag then have ppl search for it. It worked perfectly for the Acura NSX commercial, the server was temporarily shutdown from all the searches ppl did after the commercial..
Just to clarify: I don't really mind what other users care to think, but you can't help but feel that Samsung could have done a better job with the TV spot. This doesn't change MY perspective of the device, but it still concerns me to a point since i would like to see the device succeed obviously because I want there to be more iterations of the Gnote, and for other manufacturers to get involved in "phablet" marketspace. And if this commercial happens to somehow deteriorate that marketspace in some fashion, I am concerned.

i am not a marketer (?) at all but Samsung was probably just trying to stir the emotions to draw people into their website or the AT&T store to check em out further. Then they can dig into the techy details that are typical of many Android users...i.e how fast is it, what's the processor, is it gorilla glass, how much does it weigh, is it ICS, etc. etc.

No way. The gs3 wont be coming to ATT probably until at least late summer seeing as the international version hasn't even been released, let alone announced. Plus, it most definitely won't have a 5.3 inch screen, which I am really looking forward to, and won't have the s pen either most likely. Once I get my note it will be hard for any manufacturer to get me to upgrade unless it is a successor to the note from Samsung.

We will be lucky if we see the s3 by the end of the year. It was quite awhile between the release of the s2 int. and the AT&T version so I would assume it would be close to the same for the s3.

If I worked for Samsung's advertising department...
Compact car and conversion van jump off facing ramps, crash into each other, and mid-sized luxury SUV comes flying out of the fireball.
Ultralight plane flies into the back of a jumbo military cargo jet with the rear ramp down - camera zooms out from the cargo hold to show a Gulfstream business jet flying off into the sunset.
Someone holding a handheld TV walks into a movie theater, sits down, camera rotates 360 degrees and now it's a Samsung 55" flatscreen in a home theater room.
Will Smith walking down a busy NY sidewalk (in his MIB suit) looking at his Galaxy S II crashes into Jada sitting at an outdoor cafe reading something on her Galaxy Tab - next shot shows Jaden getting up from the ground, slipping his Galaxy Note LTE into his pocket, and doing some sort of Kung Fu move from Karate Kid.
Fade to black with the words: Your World Delivers (with AT&T logo, of course) the Best of Both Worlds! Samsung Galaxy Note LTE!
Van Halen's "Best of Both Worlds" playing throughout.

[Q] Lingo DAB iVy

Does anyone have one of these products?
What they're supposed to do is receive DAB, DAB+ and FM, using a bluetooth connected receiver that your headphones plugin to, and you use the app DAB GO!
The product is here, with quite a hefty price tag:
http://www.lingodab.co.uk/product_iVy.php (the Android one is the yellow one)
If you have one, are they good? £70 with no reviews isn't overly tempting. The only suitable review is with the actual app page, where someone with a Galaxy Nexus says it works fine, but the app force closes a bit
Thanks!
No-one? I guess I'll be the first to buy one then

Haven't got it yet, waiting to get funds to do so. When I get it, they'll be a full review on the XDA RC blog. Also, if you get it, PM me and I'll send you my themed version of the app with it themed to look like the "holo" UI in ICS/JB
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I received one today so this is only a preliminary review.
Looks-wise: The casing seems a little cheap and bulky.
Functionality: The app is ok but it force closes every now and then. They can't spell 'Tuning' properly ('Tunning'). The device also has a built in mic so you can use it to answer calls though it's a bit bulky to wear on the front of your shirt. Normal music also streams through the device.

Will the Gear S still work like my Gear 2 ?

I've got a gear 2 and am leaning towards the gear s because of the bigger screen and such..I dont need the stand alone phone function and just want it to use a bluetooth connection like my gear 2. Will everything still work like my gear 2?

I have the OG Gear running Tizen that I bought as a $99 refurb and use it mostly just for notifications...once in a while I will answer a call on it. I have been looking to upgrade to a newer smartwatch. I was all set on the Gear S but decided to take a serious look at the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R....to be honest I am on the fence with all 3....each one has it's pluses & minuses.......I have a Note 2 running Android 4.3 but plan on upgrading to the Note 4 within the next month or 2 so the Gear S would keep me in the Samsung Ecosystem....and Tizen has been great with battery life (4+ days with average use)...however the Android Wear watches seem to have more & better apps. It seems developers just aren't developing for Tizen.....
I know I am preaching to the quire on this one but based on my usage what would YOU get? I am assuming most will chose the Gear S considering the forum I am in....but I am asking anyway....
Thanks

I have a Neo, I had the Moto for 2 days.Battery life was unacceptable(could not get through a day). Out of curiosity what Apps do you see for the Wear that are so good? From what I could tell there was little to nothing and honestly using the UI to run any app other than notifications was cumbersome.
My Neo lasts for 4+days of use, gear s seems to be about half of that right now. Not great but liveable. Hopefully it improves with time and updates.
FYI I am a dev and am in the process of setting up my samsung dev account and if I keep the watch I will be writing some apps for it.

Can you develop a video folder on the Gear S that is not hidden inside (You can see the video folder when you connect to a computer. ) can we have another browser dolphin mini or something. It would be killer to have a shoutcast capable app.
I've had the moto 360 since launch and now have the gear s and the only thing I miss about the 360 is the facer app that I used to make watch faces with.
I don't miss the crappy battery life, the below par screen, the lag as the processor is piss poor and finally whilst the dock is cool looking its not very handy like the gear s battery dock.

Yes i too would like to see those apps for the gear s. You have to use the stock messenger app for texting to work. And that sucks. Opera just launched their browser but it doesnt support flash so sites like YouTube dont work. Nore can i stream pandora or spotify. However Milk radio does have an app for the gear s. So there is at least somewhat of an option. But yes we need more apps that take advantage of that processer and ram.
Dear readers,
Based on the topic question alone, a lot of people should go with an Android Wear watch. Just being honest and straight forward.
People who are on the fence between the two will be the first to complain when it isn't everything they'd hoped for and I'm not going to sugar coat it--there are issues with this device. From incompatibility to apps. But the joy you see on here about this watch isn't about what it can't do. So if that's going to be or has been a focal point for you with devices in the past, go get Android Wear.
This whole project could go belly up in a week and Samsung could drop it like a hot potato tomorrow. If it never got any more apps or updates tomorrow, would you have been happy you spent $300-400 on it? I would. That's what I knew when I bought it on Day 1, and that's how I still feel.
You just know if this is the right watch for you and if you have any hesitations between it and Android Wear, just go with Android Wear.
I owned an Android Wear watch for two weeks, then it was #ByeFelicia and back to my Galaxy Gear. They may have more apps and direct support for Google's native apps (haha which are now the majority of apps on their stock Android, Nexus phones ... so much for open source). Anyway yeah, they may have more apps. Are they quality apps? Eh. They have to have apps for proximity unlock and those don't even work like the Gear S does out of the box. But whether that is important to you or not is up to you.
If you hesitate about or worry about getting the Gear S, go to BestBuy and just get an Android Wear watch.

I can't disagree with you more....I ended up buying the Moto 360 yesterday and I absolutely LOVE it! Battery is EXCELLENT since the update. I charge my phone every night so why not my watch. Sure my Gear 1 got 4+ days on a charge but since I don't stay awake that long anything longer than 18 hours is irrelevant to me. As for processor...what lag do you speak of? Mine FLIES and to be honest the demo of the Gear S I played with was very glitchy & laggy....could be because it was a demo but why take a chance.
Too each is own on what OS one goes with...and for me the only watch I saw that would beat the 360 AND the Gear S is the new Asus ZenWatch....THat watch is HOT.....unfortunately they only had a demo & none for sale yet at Best Buy....but I have until Jan 15 to return my 360 if I choose so I will wait to see the reviews on the Zen

Not the Gear S, but cool anyways.

Saw the new Jurassic World Trailer and noticed this, pretty cool.

That's the original Gear. If you like that you can pick one up for under 100 bucks.
the first and the best
The first gear was my first as well and it is still my favorite although I have my Gear S for a month now.
The quality of the pictures it makes is super and it works great together with the galaxy S3.
Even with the Gear S you need to use a samsung with it for all the notifications, yes there are apps who can do the same but they don't work on my oneplus one.
The Gear S hasn't landed with me, even after a whole month, I miss the whatsapp app, the FB app to make the watch really stand alone and that fldjf**fdf Samsung must make a gear manager that works on all android phones and yess there other ways to (partly) come around that problem but I want all my apps to work and install other apps without doing magic tricks to do that.
Bumped for a link.

Moto 360 2 Sport

Mobilefun has the Moto 360 2 Sport listed as being quite a bit cheaper than the Standard 360 2, Standard model is £269, Sport is £219 . I find this a little bit surprising as the Sport comes with a GPS chip in it, so I'm wondering if the specs will be scaled down in some other way, or if its just the actual watch strap, which is a lot cheaper?
Sport:

Standard:

Moto has said relatively little about the Sport, much less when it will be available and pricing.
It sucks that there is no GPS on classic one. Dont like the sport looks but need GPS

That GPS will kill battery life I bet though.

i've used the sony smartwatch 3, and its just like the gps hardware in the android phones. By that I mean when GPS funcionality is called upon (which for the watch would be during a run or bike ride) then it comes on, otherwise its doesn't effect a thing. And when I was using it for biking, i didn't find it was that bad.
thanks for the heads up OP, the sport appears to be skipping out on the outer metal casing and leather band in place for an injected molded rubber/silicon band, so i could see it being a decent price break IMO.
Call it "guilt by association" but I couldn't find the following blurb (from mobilefun's description) anywhere on Moto's site:
Track your workouts like never before with the Moto 360 2nd Gen, the simple and easy to use SmartWatch that gives you all the information you'll need, quickly and consciously right there on your wrist. With health app integration, the Moto 360 2nd Gen will even be able to motivate you when your not moving, as well as informing you of your stats from your last run/workout.

But what left me shaking my head "no" was the really odd use of the word "consciously" and the misspelled "your". Taken together, I call "fake." I'd trust that preorder price about as far as I can throw it.
In the meantime, I owned the MS Band for about 8 months, and generally found that I could run GPS on it for 4ish hours before it died. Not saying the Moto Sport uses the same module -- just noting that for the Band, you could do a decent run, hike, or bike ride with GPS on and still have power left.

Hoping Moto will release some information about the sport model soon. I actually like the feel of silicon rubber and the GPS makes it the top choice atm.

I have a (non-GPS) Garmin that looks very similar, both size-wise and in the band design. I'd definitely make it my daily timepiece! Though...from reading up on the 1st gen 360 it's starting to sound like it would need a nightly charge. As a Microsoft Band owner, I was hoping the new 360 would do sleep-tracking but that's looking somewhat unlikely.

Yep...right after my post I started to do a bit of research. Looks like the most popular app (Sleep as Android) is good but has mixed reviews. I guess I misspoke -- I wasn't thinking of third-party apps, but instead that the 360 was specifically designed for sleep tracking. In particular, the Band (and I guess, other activity trackers) have a number of optimizations to allow the device to continue running through the night without killing the battery while gathering data...HR, motion, body temp, etc. I'd imagine that third-party efforts would normally be a lot tougher on the battery, and perhaps not have the same level of access to the hardware.

Looks like the listing in the OP
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/motorola-moto-360-sport-2nd-gen-smartwatch-black-p54780.htm
Has been updated from "preorder" to "register interest." Preorder price has been wiped as well. Hopefully we'll have some real data on price/availability in the next several weeks!

OK, some good news (I think). The black 360 Sport has shown up for preorder on Amazon-Italy for 299 EUR, which is a perfect match to the 219 GPB the OP mentioned. Seems legit. Shipping date unknown.

Now we've got a preorder listing at Amazon UK for 219 GBP. Release date is scheduled for December 1.

The Amazon UK release date moved from Dec 1 to Jan 1 a few weeks ago. No clear sign on the Italian UK page. TBH I think both of those are pretty much speculation by Amazon.
I have seen absolutely ZERO news in the US since the announcement in early September. I have to assume at this point that like the LG, the 360 Sport is being indefinitely pulled, perhaps due to a major setback or two on the hardware side. The fact that Motorola has said nothing about it -- since they introduced it with a non-working demo months ago -- is pretty bad news.
-Matt
Good news, looks like a January 7 release date, $299.

It is strange that Motorola hasn't yet allowed this smartwatch to be shown or reviewed... The only thing we saw until now were dummy Moto 360 Sports...

I don't think the design/development path has been a straight line....lots of little mysteries. One that bugs me is some apparent uncertainty about the size: early on it looked like it would be 42mm, but now the specs list it as 45mm. The fact that there were only dummies at the announcement in September was also a real red flag. I'm still hunting daily for any kind of review or hands-on data but....nothing.... Guess we'll have to wait and see in January -- though supposedly the earlier release in Europe may tell us something!

The size of the screen is the same as the 42mm version, but the case is 45mm. I think that's where you're getting mixed up.
There's a few unboxing/first impression articles. Really waiting to see battery life in GPS mode and what data screens are customizable on runs. I tried other running apps on a Zenwatch 2 I had (connected to phone) and the data screen options for running were terrible on the watch. Basically time, average pace, and distance. No customization. I believe I tried Runtastic, Runkeeper, and a couple others.
At least, according to ZDnet, GPS accuracy is pretty accurate.... unlike the Gear S2 4G version with GPS. That was terrible.
