Future of the g watch? - LG G Watch

Hey all. I picked up a g watch during the last cowboom sale for 80$ shipped. I've got about 4 days to decide if its worth keeping or refunding. So far (in 4 days of ownership) I haven't seen it as something more than a novelty accessory. I really want to like it, but I can't seem to find something its good at. Maybe I'm missing something. What do you guys think?

I just got mine too, but I really like it.....
First, I have to have my phone encrypted for work reasons. Having the Wear Unlock feature is a Godsend.
Second, I really like having my email and other notifications right there on my wrist. 90% of the emails I get are unimportant, but the other 10% are critically important. Before having the watch, I didn't check my email as much as I should have due to the amount of low importance email. Now with the watch, it is quick and easy to see an incoming message and immediately delete the unimportant ones.
Third, I love Google Now. It may start out feeling like a gimmick, but the more you use it, the more you will depend on it as a important feature. I was really starting to use this feature on my phone (G3), but it was a pain to get my phone and turn the screen on before I could use it. Having the watch allows this experience to be much quicker since I don't have to touch my phone. It's even better than the Moto X with it's "always listening" mode because you get the results right on the watch. Sure, there are sometimes that I need to push the results to the phone, but many times I am fine with viewing the information right on the watch. Checking the traffic conditions is something I do regularly - even when traveling on secondary roads and not the highway.
Fourth - Navigation on the watch. Having the turn by turn directions on the watch means I can leave my phone screen turned off when using navigation. I don't have a car mount for my car, so trying to position the phone where I could watch the navigation queues was a pain. In fact, many times I simply listened to the voice instructions which wasn't ideal. Now having the steps appear on the watch is great!
Fifth, I like having the incoming phone calls vibrate the watch. I would miss calls sometimes because I didn't hear my phone ringing or feel it vibrate (if on silent). Now I'm much less likely to miss a call.
I use all of these features all the time, but it is especially nice to be able to put my phone down when I get home and not have to carry it around with me. I can place it in the middle of our house (in the Den) and it will stay connected to the watch pretty much wherever I am in the house. It's great to still get notifications and see who is calling without having to run to look at my phone.
Those are just some features off the top of my head that I have enjoyed with the new watch.

I guess I've just got to get used to using google now more often. Thanks for the detailed uses, I can definitely see it being a good tool. I've decided to keep the watch.

Yeah, it takes some getting use to. If you are into sports, it's great to "look up" sports scores, game times, etc ("what's the Clemson score"). I use it for traffic all the time (as noted above). Helping the kids with homework? Answers to questions are just a "OK Google" away..... It's also really easy to set alarms and reminders. I use it a lot when I now I have to do something in 20 mins - "set alarm for 20 min" is all it takes. It's also easy to send short texts or place calls with your voice.....
There is a lot that Google Now can do. Most people just never take the time to explore the options because it is a little awkward to use on the phone. But it's great to use on the watch!
Good luck! I think for $80, the watch is a great buy.....

I love google now, but i get so many wake locks for usually location even with airplane mode and only wifi mode on sitting at work without moving. I don't know how people put up with the drain on the phone :/. Is the watch still helpful if I don't use google now? I ordered one from google on black friday.

I am getting good deep sleep/battery life on my phone connected to my G watch. I turn off location reporting and history for all my Google accounts under settings->location->google location reporting. It may limit a few features, but most google now cards still come through my watch. Plus It feels creepy that google knows my location 24/7.
Another battery saver is to turn off scanning always available in advanced WiFi settings.

I'm also obsessive about battery life on my LG G3, and I use App Ops Starter to limit Location services for almost all apps. Part of the reason I ditched Google Now almost immediately was its stated mission to know everything about me, including where I was at all times. But...perhaps with my new G Watch (waiting to be shipped from BB), the trade-off in using the watch as opposed to my phone (the G3's screen eats up most of the battery usage) will allow me to re-instate Google Now.

I've noticed that since I've made this thread that the battery life on my phone has gotten better despite bluetooth being on all the time. The screen probably doesn't drain nearly as much as a g3 (I've got a z1c),but it's definitely noticeable.

[Q] Car Mode?

For the past day or two my phone has been enabling car mode.
I haven't made any major updates in a while either. What is really pissing me off is that it's disabling any sound coming from the phone and it is closing some apps instantly. It is happening whether my phone is plugged in or not, and if i want to use the phone for storage over usb and car mode decides to activate the computer claims it has been disconnected though the phone says it's still charging.
Is there any way to get rid of it? I don't have a car, or any sort of dock for the phone. I really have no use for whatever it was meant to do and I'd really like it gone...
Any ideas/suggestions?
I never had a problem with car mode activating at random, however I hate car mode and the Google car app with a burning passion, so what I did is...
- Uninstalled the Google Car Home app via Titanium Backup
- Downloaded (and subsequently purchased) the app NoDock. NoDock prevents your phone from going into car mode altogether, and its saved me a lot of frustration. I think its $1.99, but don't quote me. There's a trial you can get first for 7 days, I'd recommend that.
That;s obviously a road requiring you pay to fix the problem (and it might not even...) However, if your phone is acting abnormal for no reason, ie you haven't neglected it or played soccer with it, then vzw should replace it... But I have no experience with that, so that's all I've got for ya, sorry! Best of luck.
I looked for the trial version ad it doesn't seem to be out there anymore... The full version still advertises it as to use the trial before buying, but I can't seem to find it...
At this point the phone isn't making any progress charging and it is continuously connecting/disconnecting from the computer...
If it doesn't start working might have to un-root and bring it in >.>
my tbolt lately as well activates car mode when i am in the car but i hate it and want it dead... it happened after installing gingeritis.... but it also did it on das bamf gb... i refuse to give up my gb so i will execute the app!!

Well, deleting Google's Car Home app will prevent that from launching, however, the Thunderbolt itself has a "car mode" that it will enable when the dock trigger is activated. So, unfortunately, simply deleting the Car Home app might not solve your entire problem, but its worth a shot nonetheless. Also, I'm not sure that NoDock will work with a GB-based ROM, but that, too, is worth giving a try!

In all honesty, if its not even charging anymore, un-root, wipe, and nand that puppy and send 'er in. I know that the TB is unique in that it doesn't use a magnet to activate Car Mode like previous HTC phones, but instead it uses (to my knowledge) a short in the USB slot to decide whether the phone is docked or not. So problems with USB mounting, charging, docking when not docked, etc. would seem to indicate that you have some sort of problem with the port itself. That's just a shot in the dark, but man, I'd have sent that in yesterday
And as for NoDock, I just looked, and I can't find the trial either
To some extent it is still working. It isn't getting any charge, but if I unplug the phone it turns off almost instantly. Seems like it will be hell to move the stock stuff over to the phone to flash it, but looks like that's what its come to... Guess I'm bringing it in tomorrow...

If you have a friend with a smartphone or even any kind of bluetooth-capable storage device, you could send the files to yourself via BT... It may not be the fastest, but it might save you some major frustration. But yeah dude, that sounds straight messed up. Best of luck.
I just put the sd card into my laptop to transfer. Back on stock (feels soo different...) No more car mode... But the phone still isn't charging... Until I can bring it in I guess I'll make the phone look like it isn't brand new again...

Either way, as far as I know, VZW checks for two things:
1) Obvious evidence of negligence and/or intentional damage
2) Something I don't remember that has nothing to do with root
So you should be in the clear, if anything just say you did a factory reset yourself to try to fix the problem
Well as it did when I rooted it, it recovered all of my apps w/o me having to do anything. So the phone already looks the way it did before excluding homescreen stuff and an empty inbox/contacts atm. And the most damage there is, is a small scratch where there was already an air bubble on my screen protector. If they would have ever made a case that fit the extended battery that probably wouldn't even be there =o

Haha yeah I feel you on that one. I think the type of negligence they look for is more like a mangled looking device with the customer claiming innocence. You should be fine in my opinion.
hmm... just woke up, about to bring in the phone, which did manage to charge overnight. noticed i still have a rotating rosie and it looks like i'm still undervolted as my kernel was doing earlier. well neither highly noticable as bad things... and car mode did come back today so, i'll be bringing it in now...
Go for it bro, I really doubt they'll check for little stuff like that, especially considering the bigger issue of car mode and your charging problems. Good luck though!

never herd of this before
Unable to get out today, so I've been looking into other options for now.
This seems to be what it's used for though I've never been given these options when the phone goes into car mode. The icon shows up in the notification bar identical to the picture.

On the VZW site these are their solutions. (none worked for me being there is no water damage and the port looks fine from what i can see, still gonna have to bring it in...)
Maybe this can help someoneelse if anyone runs into this problem or bring more options to try to help me fix it.
From what I can see, the first picture is of HTC's car home application, as opposed to Google's. When your phone enters car mode, the default action is to launch one if those applications, unless you've manually removed them. The fact that your phone enters car mode but launches nothing is abnormal in and of itself, not to mention the fact that it shouldn't be activating car mode in the first place.

I did manage to make it to the vzw store and they were surprised to see car mode on the phone at all. The lady at the store took out the battery, restarted the phone and concluded that I would get a replacement after the bill that was just paid like yesterday clears with them.
Good! Hopefully all goes well and you'll have a functional device soon

GPS woes & new ICS update

Nothing. I presume this has nothing to do with root etc? Would a system erase make any difference? Is it even worth a try?
It's not like I use it often, but it used to lock from here fine and now it doesn't.
Meh!
No difference for me, no satellites before or after the update. But...

You should get some satellites if you turn the device around. Right now the metal back possibly blocks all potential signals. Aluminum back cuts down about 50% of GPS signal performance compared to smartphone like Galaxy Nexus (which also does not have ideal GPS, though does work).

Good idea and thanks - I tried this, flat, next to a window and left for an hour. Still nothing How can an OTA update that claims to fix GPS break it?! Lol!
Yeah, I got the same - absolutely nothing despite over an hour face up completely flat.
My phone (Dell Streak) gets locks immediately in the same place.
The only way I've managed to "see" a single satellite on my Prime is after BT tethering to my Streak!
Very disappointing, not that it's crucial to have GPS, but there's a principle involved here.

Do yourself a favor change the power modes while in the GPS app!
See that little circle notification if it is not flashing it is not trying to lock so all you gotta do to get it to start locking is expand than minimize the notification bar!

Couldn't agree more. I had mine picking up sats in my car with Honeycomb...then ICS came along (second ICS OTA) and decided to take it away from me. Disappointed. Now, where's that Mr.Gary Key? Ha!
Ditto - this last update killed my previously acceptable GPS performance. Mine will see as many as 8 birds with decent SNR, but will not lock on any of them.

Ooops I should have multiquoted! Anyway, clearly it's happened quite a lot....gutted.....
Wow guys, this sounds really bad. I thought that the flaw is simply that the signal is weaker by half (as it is on my tests), but apparently it doesn't get any locks at all for some of you.
This is definitely not a metal casing problem, GPS antennae seems messed up. GPS, by design, should get some locks after just a few minutes, no more than 10 or 15 minutes.
All of my tests show the flaw of metal casing weakening the GPS signal, but it still finds satellites (though cannot be used for navi as a result) without WiFi.
Try going to some open space and hold the tablet skyward and see if there's any change. Indoors is not an ideal testing condition (depends on where you live), because it still might be the metal-back issue.
It not purely a hardware issue though as my GPS was on par with my cellphone before this last update.
I am also getting no gps lock in gps test since the last update. I got my prime to lock onto about 15 satellites prior to the update driving in my car(its a convertible) Now I can't get it to see a single one, let alone get a lock. I love my prime, but this is a real bummer.
I agree....if this was a pure hardware related issue, then it wouldn't have worked before then suddenly stopped working post drivers/software update. This clearly highlights that there is a software related issue going on. Obviously the aluminium backplate still reduces from the overall signal quality but it don't completely prevent it from working. If this was the case, no one would get a lock ever, on any unit!
Your move Asus...
Likewise. Signal before update. No sats found following update.
Same problem here. I did not originally have an advanced GPS app or anything, but services were able to locate me in GPS (when Wifi and location via Wifi turned off). Since the update, I get nothing. I download several apps to test GPS and all are the same: No Sats.
I don't really use GPS all that much, but I tested this before installing the update and the update did definitely break it for me.
Seems like the update was 50/50. Either it makes everything brilliant or just takes it away!! How do we approach this best? We can all contact ASUS individually but that never seems to work. I wonder if Gary Key accepts PM's?

LOL, I couldn't resist.

Anyone out there with *good* gps?

Simple question; Is anyone out there with a TF prime with decent GPS? And by decent I mean locks outside say within 15 seconds without losing signal?
My prime's GPS was working so-so before the .14 update. After the .14 update the GPS is non existent , but Shadowgun seems to run without any lag even with 10+ NPCs in one scene
On a similar note; my family just bought a motorola xoom and galaxy tab 10.1. The xoom has unbelievable GPS, locks even inside my basement within a few seconds. The tab has okay GPS. Poor prime can't flex its muscles in when it comes to GPS.
My GPS works fine for both .11 and .14 (updated yesterday).
It takes like 2 minutes for finding satellites and positioning me in the Aura Drive app. GPS was stable, I was walking for 30 minutes in the park and it was, as you said, decent.
Here are some screenshots I did while testing .14:

http://picbg.net/img.php?file=01497d3c5662d414.jpg

GPS only, no Wi-Fi!!! Test was done outside with good view of the sky. I admit, not the best signal, but for a device with full metal back plate, Woohoo
BC series, WW update, never rooted.
your locks are on the order of ~20m accuracy which might as well be a wifi triangulation... It is useless for navigation so it wouldn't make a difference whether or not you have wifi on.
If you really want to test your GPS:
+ turn off WIFI
+ get in your car
+ start driving
And see if it can maintain your position correctly without loosing it all the time. Ppl usually just test it stationary and yes then it might be able to get a lock on some birds after some time but the second you start moving around mine lost it.
Anyway that was the main reason i sent it back for a full refund, to be honest for a 600€ device i actually expect this to work flawless.

I tried this and got pretty decent results. Only tried for 2 mins when I got my C2 the other day, and not yet upgraded to ICS. I was picking up 5 at the most with 2 locking on and off.
Gonna try it with the latest .14 update soon.
didnt work with .11 not with .13 and neither with .14 havent been able to get a gps lock even once in last 1 month..
i tried stationary, in car, with google maps, with gps status app, no luck....

not working, but I don't care
Not working on mine. WiFi off, GPS on, used GPS Status from the market and got nothing after more than 5 minutes outside on a clear, cloudless day. My Xoom got locks while still inside, and once outside, locked onto 9 satellites. My Verizon Galaxy Nexus locked inside and out fast.
But, I am not concerned about GPS not working. My gnex has it, and I use that when on the road. I have 6 primes (for myself and the people that work for me). We all agreed that the lack of working GPS is not an issue, they all wanted quad core!

Turned wifi and bluetooth off, enabled performance mode. Screenshot taken on my balcony after 3 minutes of connection. However the gps is unstable, it keeps loosing sats and reconnect, but never drops completely.
WW, .14, not rooted, C10KAS...
My one was working well with .11. It worked well with Aura under 100km/h driving.
However, after upgraded to .14, no signal at all!!!
C1 series, WW, rooted.......
Nothing at all using .14. Tested against my Galaxy S2.
Someone, please shoot me in the head for clicking on this thread. I keep promising myself not to click on threads that discuss the Prime's GPS, but I keep breaking that promise like a crack addict.
I keep telling myself: "But everyone HAS TO KNOW that GPS on the Prime is not and never will be suitable for navigation, nor will the Prime ever offer GPS that's competitive with some other Android tablet offerings. They HAVE TO. And since ASUS is now offering direct returns and refunds for people unhappy with the GPS, anybody who wants their tablet to function as a navigational device should have already moved on to something else. Thus, any new thread on the GPS simply CANNOT be worth clicking on."
One day I'll learn...

Amazfit X

Starting a thread here for all users from the Indiegogo that have started receiving their watches and are having issues with them since tech support at Huami Amazfit seems pretty slow.
Caution : do not enter in parameter on the Watchface stored by default in the band, it can freeze the watch and only solution is waiting until the battery died
Still same issue than all other Amazfit : it do not track sleep in no standard time. (ex stop tracking at 11H00AM, and not track after sunrise)
Awaiting my watch so i can contribute.

Amazfit X... Day 3
Overall the device looks good and the functions that do function appear fine.
Firmware version 1.0.0.63 (updated on arrival 17th Sep and no others available at this point)
I have found two actual problems to date :
1) Absolute showstopper for me - the GPS for workouts struggles to get a GPS lock, as Mark suggested the antenna might be in the band and if I take the watch off and apply light pressure around the junction of the top half of the band I get a GPS lock, have not concluded exactly what works and don't really want to keep prodding but this seems like a physical build issue. Getting a GPS lock is one thing.... Maintaining it, well seems I have managed about a mile before I am off the grid again. I have been comparing to the results generated on my phone using my mi band 3 (ie the phone gps) and that gives a perfect route every time so I know it is possible.
... Update....I didn't know that there was an automatic detection of workout feature, found it today, about 15 minute into a walk the watch woke up and decided (correctly) I was walkiing and that counting should start at zero.... 200 metres later it lost GPS.
2) Sleep - it seems last night I did not sleep according to it, 50% fail so far.
There are of course niggles that could be improved :
1) the schedule function... Does anyone use that? Perhaps in this day and age integration with Google Calendar / MS Outlook would be more sensible.
2) Goals : I don't appear to be able to have an activity goal.... So I can have steps but a 10 mile bike ride counts for nothing at the top in large digits of the app.
3) How can I export my data?
4) Synchronisation is erratic eg if I start a workout I see a message "cannot sync during a workout" even after the workout has completed and I have to force a manual sync. It does sync eventually (my first attempt I noticed hours later), music has the same issue. Likewise I changed the steps goal on the watch but it simply did not update the app.
5) The security pass code setting, good idea but it looks like removal detection may not be working reliably - I have been sitting here typing this and the watch has decided that I need to enter the passcode.
6) I am slightly concerned with reports that the glass is easy to scratch.... I don't imagine there will be many screen protectors out there and will they stay attached in water? With such an exposed face and so much made of the complexity of making a curved screen it would be disappointing if that glass scratches easily.
I have mine for about two hours and... It is freezed after I tried to personalize the watchface. I don't understand why Huami still don't have a way to reboot the device. Why not long press the pressure button?
PD: don't personalize anything on the watch.

I think we'll have to wait several hours, it depends of the battery level. Mine it was at 50 %...
Mine was full [emoji24]

Mine was at 98% when freezed. It died in 6H with about 2H by pressing the button (when watching TV) to have an haptic feedback wich drain the battery more quickly with the vibrating motor.

Hi, guys, my Amazfit X got stuck after I tried to modify the quadrant and it doesn't unlock how I can solve it? Is there any way to turn off or do the reset manually? Thanks to who will answer me

Hola from South America everyone! Glad to see so many from Indiegogo here! I am still waiting on mine here in Colombia and have no idea when it will be arriving so I can not contribute to much until it does.
Only thing I am seeing is some folks are on 1.0.0.66 and some on 1.0.0.63 so we need to establish which one of these has more or less problems.
As for the GPS not working I am thinking an issue on the band side that has the screw. Some folks have good GPS while others do not so either a manufacture defect on some or the band simply needs to be removed and re-seated.
see here:
https://youtu.be/vVpZOMhrSec
Also as noted DO NOT try and change widgets on the watch face as you will most likely lock up the display and have to drain the battery. Someone can chime in if you can make changes of the widgets on the Zepp app or is it only on the watch itself?
I looked very closely at that YouTube video and I can not make out metal contact points for the antenna so perhaps someone here would be kind enough to check it out and maybe take some closeup photos of how that GPS antenna is actually making contact on that half of the watch band.
I got mine on Indiegogo and live in the US. Below is an email I wrote support so others can see what kind of issues I had for comparison. I do love the form factor and hardware but there are some deal breakers for me at least.
From the first moment I powered on my Amazfit X I've been having multiple issues. I appreciate the form factor and the efforts of your company but I'd like to return this watch.
Issues I've experienced
-Battery indicator on watch stops at a certain number while charging even though it charges past that number.
-I've configured it to display miles but after a workout some data shows as km and pace data is displayed wrong
-Swiping gestures are not consistently tracked.
-Pinch gesture is not consistently tracked.
-The button on the side is inconsistently tracked and sometimes just flat out doesn't work.
-I have had at least 2 workouts (one open water swim and one jog) where I started the workout and later I look down and my watch is on the home screen with no workout being logged.
-I have jogged over 5 times with it in the same area and it doesn't lock GPS for anywhere between 3 and 5 minutes even when hooked up to my phone via bluetooth (assuming it needs agps).
-Even though I'm outdoors with clear open sky, the tracking data is sporadic (see attached pic)
-I've had an issue where the Zepp app sits in my notification shade and just tells me it can't connect (until I reboot).
-I have a clean lean Pixel 4XL and the issues were on Android 10 and 11.

I've been sending feedback and emails to Amazfit - for me the GPS is useless and I also flagged yesterday that Zepp is killing my battery, no response yet, to be kind their website does say a day response for emails but in this day and age that is a longtime but given the comments generally out there I'm suspecting I wont hear anything.
---------- Post added at 11:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:52 AM ----------
It looks to be like the band itself is irrelevant for the GPS connectivity - the rubber band has a plastic insert that presumably gives strength for the connection but all plastic parts.
The connection is made from a "tab" that sticks out from the watch body that can be seen in the video, that has 2 screws (torque style) , I would presume the guts would slide out of the body if I undid those (luckily I don't have small torque drivers so the temptation is zero for me) and the tab itself has some lines on the plastic on the underside in the moulding, it does suggest to me that there is something in the tab and not just a connection point.
The screw "hole" in the tab is a small brass fitting, I presume that it might be that for strength.
I have removed the strap and reseated, amusingly it got a GPS lock while I was doing this but I suspect the moment I moved / sneezed etc it would drop so cancelled and got a lock again straight away (wearing the watch holding my arm out the window, clear surrounding other than the house I am sitting in!) but having started this email I tried again and nothing, took it off and lock moments later.
I don't think my efforts are scientific by any means but it seems to me that when the watch is not being worn a GPS lock happens - best I have had is about 10 seconds but can be up to 30 seconds so even at best it's only passable but when being worn it is at best patchy....I wonder if the antenna is on the bottom not the top and there is a simple design flaw unfortunately unlike a phone it's not possible as it stands to expose the gps activity so we can't see what it is / is not doing) but it does look like a manufacturing flaw as it stands, I've got sick of hanging my arm out the window to see if it will connect when being worn, it won't.
I have am also tried the other method of contacting Huami via the contribution because officially I am yet to receive a tracking number so I assume I will receive a production ready model soon but just in case I checked with my credit card provider, went through on the 28th April, might talk to them if the vendor is unresponsive.
The GPS of the Amazfit X is a disaster. Yesterday I made a 13 km walk around Barcelona and it registered more than 20 km. Sometimes loses the connection, when a notification pops up the GPS signal dissapears and it can be really hard to start a new workout with GPS connected.
Also I made a discover: when I attach the watch to my hand the route is a completely fail. But, if I wear the band free from mi hand (and making sure that my finger is registering my pulse), the registered route is enoughtly accurate. It seems a hardware issue about the position of the rubber band.
I think “Bow to the Future” translates to “Bend Over”!
These are all taken direct from the Campaign updates page on Indiegogo:
"Since we have released the always-on display function last time, we are now announcing two newly confirmed features."
"To facilitate your actions without using a keyboard, Amazfit X has incorporated a hands-free voice-activated assistant where the watch can be easily directed according to your voice commands. Some primary commands include: "Open target", "Open stress", "Start treadmill", "Open count down", etc."
"Extend The Campaign For Another 30 Days. This extension will not affect the current delivery schedule."
"The production process is going smoothly, and we will ship out the units as per scheduled and update the latest shipping dates once confirmed."
"The earlier the orders are placed, the earlier they will be shipped and delivered to your door."
"Some of the issues mentioned including the lack of watch faces, pinch sensitivity, sleep tracking, etc., however, have already been resolved with the current software update."
So from what everyone has been saying, non of these are true?
I have taken screen captures of all the "Updates" they have posted over there. You never know if a class-action might be coming in the future.
I stole this from the comments section as it made me spit out my morning coffee from laughing so hard this morning, thank you Gary McL for making my morning!

Question Ultra low power state

I just bought the 32 gig model to use as an android auto headunit as most good decks are out of stock and figure why not do something fun. I'd prefer not to have it receive power all the time so what is the limitation for idle time with stock settings? I actually did this once before with a nexus 7 running a custom rom and got the standby time to I want to say a few weeks. Goal is to have it go into this state when power is removed and then when power is reapplied (car turns on) it snaps right back into android auto and is ready to go.
Anyone else use this tablet for this purpose?
Hey there, I have the exact same use case as you. I also used to have a nexus 7 as my head unit and swapped for the A7 Lite within the last few months. Now I'm not sure how savvy or comfortable you are with some of this stuff, but I'll type out what I did here. Sorry if this is long but its a lot of info. Feel free to ask me any questions.
Root/AppsFirst off I rooted the tablet using this same method for the A7 10.5. This is a pretty intensive root method compared to most so I wouldn't advise if you don't feel comfortable. You will also trip KNOX so keep that in mind.
A quick note: Tasker may be able to run all of the commands I use without root so rooting may not be necessary. Greenify is definitely more robust with root but also may be able to run fine without it!
Once rooted, I installed Tasker to handle all the automation, and Greenify to handle blocking background usage. The cool thing about Samsung is they give you the ability natively to block most apps from performing background tasks so battery life should be pretty damn good from the start. Greenify with root just adds an extra layer of killing those pesky tasks that keep your tablet from deep sleep.
TaskerFor tasker, I have 2 main profiles used to turn this into a proper head unit. Hopefully you have some experience In Tasker so this next part isnt gibberish. I'll write them down here in a readable format but let me know if you want me to clarify anything.
- If any power is connected: Turn on the screen > Set display timeout to 23 hours > Turn on Immersive Mode
As an exit task when power is disconnected: Turn off Immersive mode > set timeout to 30 seconds
- If there is no power: From 8:30pm-5:00am > turn off tablet
When power is supplied, the tablets screen will turn on, set a super long timeout, then enable Immersive mode to hide the top and bottom bars like your watching a movie. You touch anywhere on the screen and they will pop out for use. When power is disconnected, it will revert back to normal.
The second task is set from 8:30pm-5am. If the tablet does not get supplied power between those times, it will shut the tablet off. This works for me because I never really drive between those times but you could adjust to your lifestyle and probably not impact battery much.
The only annoyance is that every morning you will have to turn the tablet on via the power button. There used to be a few methods of turning a tablet on when power is supplied and that is something I used on the nexus 7 but that functionality is currently lacking on the A7 lite. There is one potential way to achieve this, but it involves replacing the batter icon file used when the tablet is off and plugged in, with a script telling the tablet to boot up. Unfortunately, with the changed made to partitioning and the lack of TWRP for this device, I haven't been able to find a method of doing so.
ChargingThe most important part of all of this is making sure you have a good charger/cable that will fastcharge. With all of this done, I have never seen my battery drop below 98%. When it does drop sub 100% it charges back up in a matter of minutes once driving again.
PicsAs far as the pics below, I 3d printed a slightly angled holder with a slot for a 90 degree charging cable and also a super strong magnet behind the left side. I put a magnet plate on the tablet and is basically does not move with put into place. Looks pretty clean also which is a bonus.
Hope this info helps out and ill update if I find an auto-boot method.

So I didn't end up going the root option just in case something happens to it. I was able to use automate and setup the routines fine with one exception. Killing the headunit reloaded app sometimes doesn't work but I typically catch it so it's not terrible. But yeah basically mine does check for power then depending on power state changes wifi, screen timeout, power saving mode etc. And yeah battery life is actually pretty great on average with standby time.
I used a pocket router since I couldn't make wifi direct work. I typically leave the router on so I can connect immediately but it is switched for really cold nights so it doesn't kill my battery. And on that subject turns out this tablet hates the cold lol so I have to pull that out as well now. Kind of a pain but whatever.
Here's pics of what I did.

I also chose to use a separate EQ I had lying around. Big benefit with the separate volume knob and then setting filters since my old unit was I believe responsible for that.
On your tablet mount. Is that the plastic that's all scuffed up? If that's ABS then a quick way to bring back the shine is paper towels with acetone on it. Just wipe it gently in the same direction and it will pop.
Nice build!

It's actually PLA. I had just replaced my PEI sheet with a one of those ender 3 magnetic sheets due to some first layer problems. It stuck to the new sheet like glue and left this crazy scuffed up looking surface. Adjusted my z offset and its fine now but figured it wasn't a big deal since the tablet would cover that anyway.
I'm actually in the process of doing some more tweaks to the tablet. Gaining root access to the partitions in a custom recovery would make life super easy but there are some problems doing this in Android 11 on a samsung. I plan on removing the "your device is unlocked" warning and replacing with a subaru symbol for when the device boots, and eventually finding a way to auto boot the tablet when power is applied. I will updated in this post if i make any progress.
I'm super stoked someone else has been using this tablet and a 3d printer to turn this into a HU!

So you are actually turning off the tablet every time? I've found that even without root I can get it to hold great battery life for days and theoretically up to weeks of standby time. I mean if you drive it at least once/twice per week then I might consider keeping it on. Then you don't have to wait.
Yeah I love my printer. So much fun to make different things with it. And also one of the most frustrating tools I own lol. Dialing it in and making repairs/upgrades over time has been.... fun lol.

Yeah currently I am. I know the tablets have a great standby and deep sleep and I could probably make it at-least a week without the need to shut it down but I have it set this way just to not have to worry about it. Boot time is only about 20 seconds or so, and if i can figure out how to autoboot with power, it would be perfectly set up.
