[Q] Available Apps - Samsung Gear S

Can anyone tell me how I can find a list of all the apps available on the Gear S? There's a few I would be very interesting in installing and without a Samsung phone cannot access Gear Manager. Would the watch run a fitness app Strava? Or Facebook?

There are estimated to be a thousand Tizen apps, and as the store grows obviously that will increase a fair amount. So a list is not really going to be do-able. There are a number of fitness apps (not familiar with Strava) There is no facebook app as yet, but you can get relayed notifications from your phone.
Although the watch can function away from your phone, it's still tethered over Samsung's servers. So you will still need a Samsung Galaxy phone to be able to use it and also to install apps.

Is there anywhere that I can search for the apps. Obviously hard to do with out gear manager. If anyone has a gear manager linked then could anyone tell me if you can install Strava onto the watch?

Yes, there is Strava Running and Cycling in Samsung app store. It works on Gear S but require Strava app installed on phone. This is not standalone app for Gear S.
There is no Facebook app for Gear S. You can only recieve FB notifications from phone.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. Getting access the the samsung apps store is okay without a samsung phone but trying to find out which apps translate onto the watch has been virtually impossible. Samsung support has been terrible for this.

whatsapp for Tizen Gear S ?
available?

Thousands of apps?
I just got my Gear S yesterday and while it seems a definite improvement over the original Gear watch I'm still waiting for there to be more a variety of apps on Samsung's app store. It seems like there are a ton of apps that
are duplicates in functionality. I'm sure more apps are on the way for the Gear S. Can't wait to see what all this watch will be able to do once the right developers get involved.

I heard it was going to be very easy for devs to port Android apps To tizen. if that's true we should see a lot of good apps down the road.

I'm curious to what apps you're particularly looking out for? I only ask the question as I was wondering the other day when I was reading a post about the lack of apps on tizen and at first I agreed then I thought some more and really couldn't think of anything I wanted part from full reply to notifications which I already kind of have with notifications for gear s.

Missing apps.
It's not that anything is missing from the store. I guess I'm thinking there could be a lot more that the watch could do. I was thinking apps more around the remote sensor api. Maybe an app to control a thermostat or lights. Maybe one to control the IR on the Note for people like me too lazy to pick the phone up or the remote up to change the TV channel. Honestly if I had any good ideas I would write the apps myself and make a buck. I'm just thinking we could have some more imaginative apps in the market place for this device. Also I would like to have a torrent down loader or a way to view my jobs in utorrent or atorrent from the watch. I'm not complaining though. Like I said the S has been a definite improvement over previous gear watches.

Strava running and cycling the app is an orange color

There aren't thousands of apps for the Gear S. Not even close. If I were to make a guess there is between 150 and 200 apps for the Gear S and many are total garbage.

That would great but I have yet to find it. From what I've researched Strava doesn't work with Tizen anymore. Stopped in the Spring.

You can use facebook , twitter easily with opera mini browser

You have to go to Samsung gear s store and search for opera mini web browser and install it then set it up and on your gear s apps open opera mini and enter any long you want.
Enjoy

Might want to try wearable widgets in the google play store. It allows you to see and control widgets from your watch. So if you can have a widget on your phone that does the stuff you are talking about then you can access it from your watch with the same functionality.

Has anyone tried the new gear s instagram app on the appstore. It's a new paid app for £0.69 so very reasonable but was just wondering what it was like. Cheers

Watch out!

Google has very silently pushed a new app to all android devices. Its called Google settings. Now I love android but this shouldnt be allowed it does not seem to do harm but lets let the devs see
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
They didn't do a good job with it since it's obviously in the app drawer for all to see
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
You can disable it by unchecking all of the read write execute in es file explorer. Or if you find an older version of the android market that is compatible with our phones. And the worse thing is it's not in the market at all it's just there.
I Personally think forcing a phone to silently install an app is wrong. Had it been a usual update that would have been smarter.
It lets you control all the google settings from one place. I for one think that's smart. Who cares if it's in your app drawer, hide it if you don't like it.
What version Google Play adds this? I haven't received it yet. I'm 100% stock and unrooted. My issue now is all of a sudden I am receiving double notifications from all my apps except gmail.
Edit. Never mind I have the app now just checked. Now if the double notifications would stop.

The app doesn't do anything else other existing apps were not already doing. It simply aggregates all the Google settings into one cohesive place (although I feel that the 'account sync' area is better suited for this). It doesn't require any special permissions that are not already used by other Google apps.
If you do not want it either hide it like others have said or simply unlink your Google account from the device seeing that the only thing the app does is put the settings in one place and creates a platform to be able to give you MORE control over what other apps can access as far as Play Services functionality is concerned. This app is very welcomed.
Also if you are against them updating stuff without your consent, root and remove the play store -- that updates automatically as well. You're using a device that uses Google Apps as it's back end, this is expected.

See the play store is fine. when that updates, i get a notification of new terms and conditions, as well as it only happens with new OS releases or when i open the actual app. not radomly while im on the john or asleep.
Wasn't really a secret, they have been promoting for awhile now and there have been a few articles pre and post. It just compiles settings for their apps.

It's a shame how many people are hating on this thread instead of seeing it for what it is. Anyways i made an app that fixes this issue in the app section and in the general I put the old og market that won't update by it's own.

Did you actually read the terms you agree to every update? Because section 3 - Updates of the Play Store ToC state:
You may need to install updates to Google Play or related Google software that we introduce from time to time to use Google Play and to access or download Products. Products originating from Google may communicate with Google servers from time to time to check for available updates to the Products and to the functionality of Google Play, such as bug fixes, patches, enhanced functions, missing plug-ins and new versions (collectively, "Updates"). By using the Google Play store and installing these Products, you agree to such automatically requested and received Updates.

Emphasis mine. Also, ignoring all that, what difference does it make if it asks you to agree? Your point was that you didn't want apps to update themselves. The play store does that, ergo it was a valid comparison.
As a matter of fact I would be more paranoid about the play store because those updates usually have new functionality. All this does is literally link you to setting screens that were already on your device and adds an area to give YOU more control cover what third party apps can access.
Looking at the dissection of the app on the link provided shows exactly what the app does. Which, by the way, the Play Services has been doing this ever since the play store launched with Android 2.2 and above (Source - Automatic Updates).
So my original advice stands, if you do not want this to continue, delete the Play Store.
TL;DR:
Play store agreement allows and makes it clear that automatic updates will happen.
App doesn't add new permissions, it links to existing menus.
This has been happening since Android 2.2 and it's nothing new.
Only way to stop it is to delete the Play Store.

Well, you didn't really choose Google Play. It's preinstalled on your phone when you buy it. The fact that the "Settings" app was pushed to the phone automatically, and is only used to change settings for Google Apps, there's really not an alarm for concern. You actually agreed to it when you bought the phone and accepted the terms when setting it up.
Glad to see this thread. I was visiting someone yesterday and messing with their gnex (I maintain it for her, in a sense) and saw this green Google settings and started freaking out cuz it was unknown where it came from, and I could not find it in either /data/app or /system/app and therefore could not remove. Also, about the same time, the email app would no longer login or sync, saying invalid password. I though it possibly related, thought Google setting was something malicious. Now I know it's legit :good:
Thanks

Question about MyMagazine / Flipboard

Alright, so I got my 2014 edition yesterday and I've been playing around with it and i've come across this... I know from reading online that MyMagazine is a joint program that was between Samsung and Flipboard or something along those lines.
I haven't played with MyMagazine that much yet but just a quick glance at it, it seems fine but I think I prefer to use Flipboard... especially since I have my Flipboard account feeding news that I want to read about. But it seems that when I open up the Google Play store and search Flipboard, it says that the app is already installed and I'm able to open it via Google Play and I was able to sign into my account no problem. Why is it that I can't find the app icon anywhere though? There's gotta be an easier way to access the app than contantly going to the Play store to open the app.
Anyone able to figure that out yet? Thanks! :good:

Gear S apps list?

Have couple question about the apps supported by Gear S? If anyone has played hands-on in AT&T store or is planning too.... would appreciate some insight.
Essentially, will Gear S allow apps install from the Play Store, or we at the mercy of Samsung to decide what I can and cannot do, when I'm away from the phone?
Also, is Gear Manager just a routing/notification type software, and truly we can install anything on Gear S (whether thru playstore or side apk load), and when the smartwatch is far away (not in bluetooth range) from the phone... Gear Manager directs the AT&T tower to route the appropriate data to smartwatch.. as long as the app was installed on both smartwatch and smartphone?
Based on that AT&T fineprint pic... it seems, it will allow SMS/MMS/call and also email... does it mean I can install corporate email client from play store? and will it still work? Also, not sure about other apps.
If anyone has seen in the store... do you see the play store icon, or in settings option "to allow install from unknown sources"? Thanks in advance.
I did go to the AT&T store but the Gear S shut off.
I dont think you can install from the play store since its running Tizen OS not Android.
Thats all i now waiting for more info from Samsung.
That is a good question: is there a Tizen play store?
i to have same question as i m also planing to buy gear s ,.,. i want to have a calculator app as i did not see any sign's of having calc in it ,.,.
but i dont think that we'll have any authority to install any other app. and if this is the case than how good is moto 360 as it is an android watch ??

You're using the wrong tool set. This watch is not android, it's tizen.
1) You don't install APKs on the watch, you install .wgt files or you install APKs on your phone and then if it's a combo app it installs the .wgt
2) to install wgts manually on the watch you need the Tizen SDK and IDE. This will come with an "sdb" tool.

you can't install those apps, they are android apps. There are no app for those for the gear s. Any post you saw saying you could install APK(or any android app) on the Gear 2 was lying. You can install some app on the original Gear because it was android, but the Gear 2 and gear S are both Tizen.
you can "sdb" certain wgt files to you watch manually, but that's extremely limited because most wgt files need to be signed and authorized by Samsung, which means they have accompanying android apps to go with them.
Anyway basically you are limited to what is in the Gear App Store, unless you start writing your own.
If you need to run android apps on a phone, then about your only options are the Original Gear(Make sure you get one not updated to Tizen), or the Sony SmartWatch 2

You Can't. Think it like asking how to run a windows app on your android phone. The two can talk together, but they are COMPLETELY different application technologies. An Android App can communicate with a Tizen app, but you can not run or convert Android apps to run on Tizen. The application needs to be written specifically for Tizen.

As agreed with the seller I reset the phone to factory default, and now I cant get any of these icons or programs back on. I read your posts with interest, especially the one that says it can't be done. Has anyone worked out how to do it yet?
any help would be gratefully received.

Gear S doesn't heart iHeartRadio

iHeartRadio is not to be found among available apps in the Gear S manager, but when I install it on my Galaxy S5 via Google Play:
1) iHeartRadio sees that I have a connected Gear device
2) proceeds to try to install iHeartRadio on my Gear S
3) generates an error message about failing to install the app on my Gear S
4) proceeds to remove the app (!) from my Galaxy S5.
Both devices were configured to allow for external installs. I'm guessing Samsung wants to retain exclusivity for Milk, but I hope it doesn't mean they will also be blocking the release of TuneIn. I'm more of a news guy than a music guy, and I'd really love to see a streaming radio app land for the Gear S. Right now I'm making do by copying news podcasts over to my watch, but that's a pain.

Not sure if samsung is blocking it or if iHeartRadio is trying to install a version that is not compatible with Gear S (Gear 2?? - http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer...ar-2-and-gear-2-neo-smartwatches-is-available), as a result pulling off both the mobile/ watch installations!!

I ran the logcat. The only thing that stands out is:
W/ResourceType(21464): Invalid package identifier when getting bag for resource number 0xffffffff

Can you add a little more? Need some context.
I installed the I heart app via Amazon app store on my note 4 and so far it seems to be ok. I didn't receive an error message after install and the gear manager didn't uninstall it. I will test this out for a day or two and let you all know if i run in to anything.
Ditto I installed iHeart from Amazon app store it stayed I do not have a iheart on my Gear S though not sure if I was supposed to have one or not
This is why I love forums. Thank you so much for the info. This worked.

Update: After installing from the Amazon app store I haven't had any problems using this app.

I installed the Iheart app from the Amazon store, and it didn't install anything on my Gear S. Is there something I'm missing?
Is it still not working?
There is currently no fix for the gear 2, the app will only work on you phone at this time. I heart is aware of the issues and is working with samsung to get this issue fixed. Hope this helps.
I was able to succesfully install iheart on my Note 3 and Gear 2, when the Gear 2 came out. But on my Note 4 and Gear S, no success. Only option now is like whats already mentioned. And thats installing it through Amazon app store. That also wont install the watch app. But as a work around, you can use the media player on the Gear S to control the volume, skip songs, and pause/play.
