EFS Backup with TWRP? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
Today i will switch from HTC One S to an I9300.
Can i Backup and restore the EFS Partition with TWRP and do i have to restore the EFS Partition after flashing a custom rom?
On my One S i´ve deleted all partitions and the flashed a custom rom but on that phone i did not have to backup any efs data.
thx in advance!

You can backup&restore /efs with TWRP.
You should only wipe partitions, offered in TWRP, before flashing another rom. You mustn't restore /efs afterwards. Generally avoid any actions on /efs /dev: high chance of brick of losing your IMEI.

I've seen that there are different tools for backing up EFS partition but using TWRP looks like the easiest way to me....

Afaik these tools don't store anymore than TWRP. So keep it easy. But forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56492632&postcount=15 @billa says, that this is no 100%-insurance: IMEI would be saved in dev-partition.

No. Too few details.

If you made a complete system / nandroid backup with CWM, then you can restore it in CWM recovery mode => Backup & Restore => Restore.
Good luck !

[Q] Help! EFS Folder screwed. I have a backup

I used the EFS Backup tool to create a backup. Now I need it, but can't restore.
It won't find the backup. Anyone have any suggestions?
Resolved. Not sure how, but back to normal.
All I was doing was making a nandroid backup via CWM and when I rebooted my IMEI was unkown and I had no radio function.
Reboot. Shut down. Start. Nothing.
Tried to restore, but the EFS Backup Pro tool could not see my backup (not sure why).
Saw no progress in the restore other than the notice that the restore wasn't found.
Rebooted, radio working. IMEI restored.
Made a new backup, just in case.
Okay, so I've had it happen again.
Should I use EFS Backup Pro to reformat and restore my EFS?
Sorry, I don't have your solution.
I just want to say: Hope you can solve it fast and definity!
Seems to only happen when the device is rebooted while connected to the charger.
If you can get your phone back up and running again like before then Id go to the link below and backup your EFS folder.Do both types of backup, save to SD and PC and then might be a good idea to follow the instructions as to doing a wipe and then restore. But do both types of backup incase one of them gives you problems when you try to restore.better safe than sorry.

I made both backups after I was able to get it running with my IMEI and modem functioning.
Cleared cache and Dalvik and reflashed the kernel also.
If I have the problem again, I'll do a wipe and manually restore everything.
I'll keep the thread update, just in case this happens to anyone else.
Are you using a Custom ROM?
No. Stock KK5. Have not had the problem since.
Mate thats not good from a stock firmware.maybe you it would be a good idea to flash back to a previous one to see if it still happens if this has happened since you changed to KK5.Possible bug,and a big one too.Id flash back to your previous FW then root and do a full system/cache /data format to clean up the device just in case and see is it still happens.
When you get it working again try Hellcta's kTool.
Among other things, it can backup and restore EFS folder.
2 backups .tar.gz & .img saved directly to sdcard & can verify the backups too.

[Q] Backup imei or efs prior to flashing

In addition to backing up the entire system, I'd like to be able to back the imei info separately like the efs directory on my captivate before flashing. Any idea what I should do to backup those info? Thanks!
Unnecessary. This isn't Samsung so flashing custom firmware won't delete your imei.

You never know when an EFS backup may be needed. There have already users with messed up devices where an EFS backup would have saved the phone.
EFS Backup script - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2161611
Restore commands also included.

[Q] Besides EFS backup what else?

Before Installing Recovery / Rom what should be backed up (except personal data) ?
I heard EFS should be backed up and made into several copies.

you are right.
First thing after root = backup your efs folder
Then after you got a custom recovery, making a nandroid backup is always a good idea.
and yes personal data is also good to be saved.
in addition i highly suggest you to read the stickies
after that happy flashing

Well I rooted the device.
Used kTool(Verification screenshot: http://oi57.tinypic.com/s2gl01.jpg) to backup the EFS, got two files: efs.IMG & efs.tar.gz one is 20MB the other is 0KB this is normal? Cause the verification said there's an error of some sort..
I have SuperSU as Root controller, this ok?

[Q] How to backup efs?

Hi
1. How can I backup the efs partition with TWRP v2.7.1.0 that is already installed on my xt1022?
If I boot to TWRP recovery, touch the backup icon, so I get only the possibility to backup:
[x]System
[x]Data
Cache
[x]Boot
But I don't get the choice for efs, like there is one I saw on pictures (hyperlinks are not allowed for new xda users) an older TWRP version then mine for an other smartphone.
2. How can I backup the efs partition with an dd linux command - in an root adb (root already activated)?
3. How can I then restore this efs partition in case of an efs disaster?
Thanks in advance!
Use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ma.wanam.partitions
It automatically highlights appropriate partitions. Restore functionality is also available.
