Nexus 10 Revisited with lollipop upgrade. - Nexus 10 General

Nexus 10 was not a huge hit and it got completely ignored by google.
Being a two year old device can it still perform as good as it could before?
Will it make you again fall in love with it?

Need all you Nexus 10 owners feedback...

In your opinions...
1. will the next nexus 10 jump in price like the N7 did?
2. did 4.3 for YOU make any big differrences as far as lag? and battery life?
3. is it worth buying a used N 10 right now for around 315?
Thanks guys...
1. No. If anything the price will decrease because it's Asus.
2. I bought mine 2nd hand last month for £220 and 4.3 was just out by that time so I have no experience of 4.2. I can say that 4.3 is a great experience and super smooth. Battery is about 8 hours for me.
3. TBH I would wait till next month for the announcement before buying a 2nd hand N10. Wait to see what Asus have in store. They might even drop the price of the Samsung N10 like they did with the N4.

To answer your questions:
1. Seeing as the Nexus 10 is already a $400-$500 device and most high end Android tablets usually max out around this price point I don't believe the next Nexus 10 will jump in price.
2. In my own personal experience with 4.3, the overall experience feels slightly more fluid then 4.2.2 and my battery life has also improved on 4.3.
3. For this used Nexus 10 your buying is it the 16 GB or 32 GB version? That being said the Nexus 10 is still one of the best tablets on the market and still worth the money.

1 - NFI
2 - 4.3 made a huge impact to smoothness for me. While it was always quite quick, I used to still get stuttering when scrolling webpages etc, that is mostly gone now. I think its is mainly due to the implementation of TRIM in 4.3 which helped a lot. One leftover anoyance that is still around and can happen from time to time is the reloading of the UI when closing/switching apps
3 - I think it is the best tablet out there, it is still better than anything else out there almost a year after its release
I have a bit of an addiction to having the latest model. With my phone I sell my old one and buy the new one. I think the tablet market has got a lot better for app support but don't believe tablets are there yet to upgrade once the next model is released. I will be sitting on this device for another year unless there is a significant reason to upgrade. This is a great tablet and being a nexus line looking forward to the os (kitkat 4.4)

I saw the news of the new N10 coming out but going to be manufactured by ASUS. The current N10 is manufactured by Samsung. I read of problems and issues with tablets made by ASUS. The specs on the current N10 are still awesome. Because of these, I just purchased by N10, refurbished from Walmart. It is a great tablet.

Is anyone else excited for the new Nexus 10?

So are you? I keep looking online for information to the new Nexus 10, but no one seems to care. All I can find is information related to the new Nexus 5, and although it's a great looking device, I'm gonna wait a bit to see if I want to change carrier just to get it. What really has me excited is the concept of a far more powerful Nexus 10 device.
Yet, no one seems especially interested. So am I gonna have any competition at all buying this device? If no one cares I guess it'll make it that much easier to waltz in and buy it. I even sold my old one before the new one was announced so that I could get a good price for it.
I am with you. Looking forward to it. If it ever sees the light of day.

Agree. A good device but not perfect.
Im also looking forward to the 2nd gen Nexus 10. However, I really hope that its not Asus that makes the next N10. They seem to f**k up every device they release.

Yup I am looking forward to it. The current Nexus 10 is good but you can tell that it has not really been optimised and it does lag. Because the new tablet will be using the 800 snapdragon (well hopefully) then it will sure be a hell lot smoother and stable.

That's what I felt about mine the whole time I had it. It was smooth... sometimes. Even with the subsequent updates it never really felt like it was "there" yet. I knew going in that it was a first gen device and that there may be problems. Perhaps they just couldn't find a CPU/GPU at the time that would handle the level of power needed. Overall I choose Android over iOS for the functionality, and wouldn't balk at a few stutters. However, there were many things that just seemed to really bother me.
Browsing the web was a complete chop fest on many of my favorite websites, most likely because the Nexus has to re-scale just about everything, every time, because of its very high resolution. Also, playing games was fun, but only til the tablet got really hot and throttled itself and the game started to slow down. Even the relatively simple game "Dungelot" had this problem. Stuttering abounded after that happened. It was other games too but that one I remember vividly.
In other words... I loved it, but I would also really love an updated version of it. One that doesn't have the problems present with the first.
Well it definitely looks like it'll be manufactured by Asus and not Samsung.
That doesn't really bother me - I came to the Nexus 10 from the Nexus 7 (first gen). Nexus 7 was awesome until 4.2 was released and it never recovered from that. It annoyed me that to get a decent experience from it I needed to use an outdated version of Android...
I sold my Nexus 7 and bought a 2nd hand N10. I do love my N10 but yeah obviously I would love an updated faster version, but for me money is an issue and I already got a great bargain for the 2nd hand N10 (for £185) (this was in July), so i wouldn't be able to afford a new N10. Same with the Nexus 5. Would freaking love one but no way I can afford it, I've got a 2nd hand HTC One X (for £145).
Yeah I agree Google need to sort out performance on android. Nexus 7 first gen was brilliant but after the 4.2 update it has been bad, and even with 4.3 with trim it is still laggy.
Nexus 10 on the other hand has got better with updates, it is just the kernel and driver which is letting it down in my opinion.

Right? Where's the new Nexus 10 spec leak? Come on, they've already pretty much shown us the whole Nexus 5. Specs, images, hell they even put it up on Google Play for a short time. I have looked through the roster of available tablets, and a new Nexus 10 is what I wanna go with, despite the absence of info. The new Note looks alright, but it also looks bloated and confusing.
Why can't the other tablet manufacturers understand that maybe the user actually wants to use some of that power for important things, not 100 background processes that slow the entire thing down. Oh sure you could root it and put a different ROM on, but why would I pay $550 for a tablet with all these special features I don't want and am going to just throw away? It's like pissing $150 down the drain.
Google needs to get on the ball with these new releases.

I want a release already but then again if they release it on the same day as the nexus 5 (Oct. 24th) then I'll be spending around $1000 by Oct. 31st... So let's hope for a quick release but not so quick..

I'm with you. I've never been a fan of Samsung TouchWiz - it's just a bunch of unnecessary fluff as far as I'm concerned.
I purchased my current cell phone (Galaxy Nexus) from Amazon for just that reason.
Hopefully by the time the new Nexus 10 is out the Asus TF701T will be available as well - would be nice to have another choice at time of purchase!
Nope won't be upgrading as mine is perfect too

Needs to look more square like the Nexus 7 2013 and come in around £300.
Otherwise ipad air for me.
Hope they announce it soon.
Google is out of stock on the 16 Gb version. Since I doubt these things are selling like hotcakes now, I hope this means that they have stopped resupply in anticipation of the new one launching.
Pure conjecture.
Would be nice if...
Would be nice if we had some info on it. I've got the original wifi xoom mz604 and I'll say its held up nicely and it does everything I ask it to do, but I've upgraded my phone twice since getting it and I'm ready for the nexus 10 2 (nexus 10 2013?) to drop...or just some info to drop so I can make a decision whether to wait or not.
What I don't understand about product releases is that I would think manufacturers would want to release information as early as possible so that buyers can decide whether to wait and buy their device or to go ahead and buy an available device. I'd think that if someone wants a new tablet and wants to get the newest one available (that suits them), they would research whats available or coming up and make a decision. If i'm gonna buy a tablet today, but I know the nexus 10 2 is coming out in 2 weeks. I'm more likely to wait the 2 weeks and get the newest tablet out there. If theres no info on release date and I need a tablet now, I'll just go buy whats available now instead of waiting indefinitely.
Get the release date and price out there so I can decide to wait or not. Otherwise I'll buy something else today and you'll lose my business. I'm sure there are reasons to not release the info, but as a buyer...I want to know how long I have to wait.
At any rate, I want to switch to Nexus devices...but I'm on Verizon and won't be getting a nexus phone anytime soon I bet. So at least tell me when I can get the tablet...I mean, its my birthday today and I could tell my family just to give me some cash to save up for it instead of asking for something else just to be asking for something...i.e. mom is getting me a briefcase...exciting!
Lay out the release roadmap so I know what to do...please.

I'm with you. Not ready to ditch it yet. Still a good running tablet that does everything I need it to do.
Yes this is great news. I'm very happy with my tablet. no need to ditch it, and with Lollipop i'm sure it'll run that much smoother.
This is awesome news because I'm very disappointed with the display size of the new Nexus tablet!
I wonder if we'll get a preview tomorrow, or just the final release when it comes out.

Read closer, it says lollipop is rolling out to Nexus 7 wifi and Nexus 10 week of Nov. 3rd.
Yeah I was just about to delete my comment. It's been a long day missed it. XD sorry
Awesome. I still may upgrade to the nexus 9 but for now I'll stick with this. I'm not sure whether I want the nexus 9 or z3 tablet compact yet. I'll probably keep this with android L until around December when both have been out for a while and reviewed well.
And maybe if android L is built really well it can give this tablet a complete refresh and just hang on to it without an upgrade for even longer. The specs are still holding up since this was pretty amazing at release

Here's hoping this isn't screwed up as badly as the last update (which has caused major problems for many, many people with not a word of response from Google to the bug reports), and isn't crippled with disabled features like previous updates.
I'm not holding my breath, though. After months of my tablet being barely usable due to continuous random reboots, app crashes and lag (sometimes multiple seconds to respond to a simple keypress or other screen touch), I'm just about over it.

I bought one for my daughter for Christmas last year, been running ThunderKat, it has been rock solid, so smooth and fast. It's night and day in regards to speed compared with the other cheaper tablets in our house. Lillipop should make it even better.
Good to hear that we are getting Lollipop. As the 10 meets my needs well, this makes me even more comfortable hanging on to it until the battery or LCD goes bad.
the N10 is still a very good tablet with a beautiful screen. I have latest L preview on my Nexus 5 and if it is any indication, it is going to run absolutely smoothly on Nexus 10. I feel its now good for another year or maybe even more!!!

Thanks for the tip. Shame that you have to rely on third-party devs to provide a stable ROM though -- Google's own work should be the most rock-solid available, but for the Nexus 10 it's not even close.
KitKat killed this tablet for me, im hoping that Lollipop will sort out the horrible battery drain and slow game performance, games ive played perfect on Jellybean became laggy and unplayable on kitkat and still are now
i suppose i should of tried a 3rd party rom.

[Q] Is it worthy to upgrade to the Nexus 9 from the Nexus 7(2013)?

I was wondering if it's worthy to upgrade from the nexus 7 (2013) to the nexus 9 for those that have owned/ own both. I'm debating whether I should just stick with my Nexus 7 for now or to upgrade and sell the 7 or give it to a family member.
Great question... wondering myself. Probably gonna keep my 7 after reading all the negative feedback.
Well if you have a thing for spec's, without a doubt yes. But if you really had to ask this question then probably not
Depends on what you use it for, and if you can afford it.
I have both and can't see my N7 getting much time from me, it'll be more of a secondary device now.
I see... I did upgrade from the nexus 2012 to the 2013... I actually pre ordered it... But then the price wasn't such an increase so I didn't really hesitate on getting it but this time it almost double in price... And having pre ordered the nexus 6... I was wondering if it was worth also upgrading from the 7... Guess I'll wait for the nexus 9 2015 edition unless HTC does another flash sale...

As said before: big spec upgrade.
I will not upgrade:
Price (might not be an issue for most)
4:3 Screen, I usually watch movies
After testing one myself I have to say: it does not feel "smoother to use (software problem for sure).
The upgrade from 2012 N7 to 2013 N7 was much more noticeable if you ask me
Yeah maybe I should go and check it out somewhere.
Price wouldn't be such a problem if I wasn't getting the nexus 6 which is also one of the reasons I was considering upgrading from the 7 since their sizes are getting so close that I feel like the 7 would become redundant.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I had been waiting for the Nexus 9 to arrive to upgrade from my 2012 Nexus 7, which has served me very well these last 2 1/2 years.
The mixed reviews for the Nexus 9 have caused me to rethink this.
I'll probably just upgrade to a 32 g 2013 Nexus 7, which I'm reasonably sure is still available somewhere, and pocket the $250 to $300 difference.
Worth the jump in screen size. Performance wise I'm not sure. This N9 runs freaking hot as hell on simple stuff!
Yeah the upgrade from the 2012 to the 2013 was worth it in my opinion.
And yeah the extra screen size would be nice but the reviews have just been meh, which is making me wonder if I should upgrade this time too.
But yeah I think I'll hold on to the 7 a bit longer unless there's a crazy good deal on the 9 which I don't see happening til way later.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I've got both a N7 2013 and a N9. They're really not the same thing at all, and I don't consider the N9 an "upgrade" to the N7. I actually really wish Google had kept both devices available, it sucks that they killed off the N7. I think the N9 is more of a productivity device for "getting stuff done" while staying in one place, while the N7 2013 is more for entertainment and portability. I can easily slip the N7 into the hip pocket of my pants. I can whip it out anywhere and do anything with it (...get your minds out of the gutter). It's amazingly versatile. The N9, on the other hand, takes more consideration when I need to wield it or bring it along somewhere. With a keyboard folio case, I can totally see the N9 replacing most of my desktop activities. But it's not something I can casually hold up in the air to read with while laying on my back. It's not the first device I'd reach for to play Asphalt 8 with, no matter how stunningly gorgeous the graphics are on this amazing screen and this fantastic GPU.
Having said that, I've owned a few Nexus 7 2013's since it was released, and they've all had the most frustrating random bugs. The bugs were never the same across all devices. I've never had one that wasn't buggy in some way. And it looks like the Nexus 9 is heading for the same fate. I'm really hoping that future software updates resolve these annoying bugs, because paying this much for a buggy device is really disappointing.
In any case, I'll be keeping both devices, for sure.
Agree with the above you don't gain much screen for entertainment. Watching a movie in its proper aspect on Play Movies (Gravity) Virtually half of the screen in landscape mode is black bars.
What it is nice for is web browsing and most likely productivity because of the increased real estate.
When games are developed for this screen the ansalysis may change.
The one handed, hold it all day, weight and form are gone. The 9 isn't as cumbersome as my old iPad by far but something about the 7 just feels right. This device feels like something you pick up periodically or keep on a stand rather than the 7 which felt like something that you could hold all day.
Love this tablet aside from the screen leak but I don't know that its a direct upgrade for the 7 unless you somehow found the predecessor wanting in size.
i upgraded... i like the fact it is bigger because the 7 is to close to my phone... i would just always use my phone instead... i am actually using the tablet more because of that.
Its definitely worth it.... Dont listen to the reviews....try it for yourself....
Been trying so hard to order one.... Hopefully there will be more holiday sales!!!

same here when I got my oneplus 5.5 inch screen my nexus 7 went from a daily carry to collecting dust and sometimes being lost because it wasnt used.
Which is why I sold mines in preparation for the 9.

Should i take my Nexus 9 back for a refund or a repair?

I got my Nexus 9 32gb lte a few months ago from a local retailer (JBHIFI) and there has been a few issues that have since popped up and i'm looking for advice on what i should do. I should start out by saying that it was a floor model with literally nothing else besides the tablet. No charger, no box, no Htc manuals or warranty cards (i know what they look like thanks to my Htc one x and Htc one M9) but at half the retail price i thought it was a good deal. The screen looked good with very little backlight bleeding ( only at the top and bottom and you can't really tell if you're not looking for it) and the housing looked to be in good shape as well but after a few months the issues started to pop up. The first issue i noticed was the tablet gets pretty hot to the point where i can't touch it, I'm not sure if it's a nougat issue but i doubt it, it's specifically hot around the top half and there's a crunching sound when i press down around the top 1/4 of the tablet which leads me to believe the copper shield is having issues. Second issue is the battery life has also taken a pretty big hit, i used to be able to get 6+ hours sot (managed 7 hours once) and now I'm barely able to get 4 hours sot with it frequently only getting about 3 1/2 hours sot before i have to charge it. Third issue is the air bubbles in the corners of the screen. I've got 3 separate bubbles along the top of my nexus 9, one in the top left and one in the top right corner and a small strip very close to the right corner air bubble. I know i have consumer laws on my side in case JBHIFI decide to do nothing to help me and i could force the issue if i wanted to. I'd like to get it fixed but these issues are making me look at other options like a new tablet (not much to choose from though). Any advice would be a great help.
Cheers Mrbtree98
My advice (having one of the finicky ones for nearly 2 years) is to return it. I don't think mine has any actual hardware issues but requires frequent wipes (at least every 8-12 weeks) to avoid lag, freezes, and reboots. The back of the tab-near camera-does get hot especially when using Chrome but the bubble issue would concern me.

Thanks for your reply. I went back to the store, spoke with the manager and they'll be taking it back with a full refund in the new year because of a massive hardware fault in his opinion. He asked if I could come back after the Christmas/Boxing Day madness which is fine with me. Thank you again for making up my mind on this.
I wish I could help with a suggestion for another tablet. The reason I still have mine is because I've found nothing better. I actually love the form factor, and when it's working well, the display is remarkable.

I loved my Nexus 9 when i got it but these issues have put a serious dampener on my love with the nexus line, Especially when I'm coming from the Nexus 7 2012 and the 2013 (2012 died from either a mobo failure or a nand failure but the thing served me and later my dad well. The 2013 was easily my best tablet experience to date and still is). Like you said the screen is amazing (minus the bubble issue) and i love the form factor, it's just a shame that google went with the "lets price everything higher" approach which screwed over Aussies with $1000+ Pixels. (128gb Pixel XL comes in at almost $1500) I'll be keeping an eye out on CES and MWC to see what comes out on the tablet scene but i'm hoping for a Galaxy Tab S3 to get announced or for Lenovo to come out with something amazing as they're really the only players in the Australian market outside of windows 2 in 1's from Asus, Hp, etc, Ipads and the Surface lineup.

Likewise, (and I think most people who use the N9 share this opinion)
When it works, its great. Sadly.....it doesn't always work great, biggest reason for this is that its a 64-bit android with only 2 gigs of memory. thus, your memory is 90% of the time near full capacity.
(Which is why I find my OnePlus 3 for instance with its 6gb of memory a godsend. It might be overkill but atleast I never ever have issues apps force closing etc due to no more memory available)

My first nexus was the Nexus 5, after which I bought the N9. The N5 was a remarkable phone....the N9 also managed to kill my love for the nexus line.
Pixel kosts around € 950,- for the 32gb version and around € 1175,- for the 128gb version in Europa). Which translates to around 1000~ 1250 dollars. Still not as bad as 1500 dollars but I will never ever in my life lay down that much money for just a phone.
Now, as far as recommended tablets go. I cannot recommend Samsung (We have a Tab Pro here aswell), simple verdict on that. Its slow, sluggish, comes with far too many un-installable system junk apps and Samsung can F*** right off with their locked bootloaders, anti-flash policies, KNOX and instant-warranty void if attempt to flash remotely anything.
If I were to count I'd say our Samsung Tab came with atleast 3~4 news apps which it will try to shove down your throat. (As they are baked into the default launcher so you can't even remove or disable them)
Maybe Sony/Lenovo comes out with a good tablet. The only other good aspect about N9 is that it features only Google default apps and very little to no bloat. So its rather clean.
Never thought I'd say this but, If you really need a good tablet. Personally, I'd recommend just getting an iPad instead (Coming from someone who uses 100% Android at all times)

The only reason i'm looking at a Galaxy Tab right now is because my mum and step dad came to visit and they both have a galaxy s7 edge and the thing bloody flies so i'm hoping that carries over to a future Tab S3 release if it ever comes out but you're right about the bloatware damn things came packed full of crap I wouldn't use but I think Samsung have actually bothered to optimize their skin more than in the past (before they upgraded, they had a galaxy S3 3g 1gig ram version and a og note and those things were turds) but i'll wait and see what happens as i'm not rooting or running custom roms anymore except on my old htc one x. (i'm alpha testing cm13 on it and it's going ok but damn are there issues we need to iron out). I don't think Sony is going to be doing another tablet even thought the z3 compact and the z4 were really good tablets from user and reviewer reports just from the amount of time between releases. It's been well over 18 months since the z4 tablet came out so i'm thinking they've pulled out of the tablet arena because of how poorly their mobile division is doing at the moment. I'm wary on lenovo because my dad had a bad experience with one of their recent 8" yoga tabs. Thing would constantly freeze, lockup then dad would have to reboot it manually so not the best experience there from a hardware point but the software is pretty bare bones and stock like but with lenovo icons, you get the standard google suite of apps and some lenovo additions, some are good and some are horrible (why they changed the look of multitasking and put in their own gallary i don't know but they ruined the look of the os and did not follow material design at all) but they're a more budget option so you get what you pay for. Asus is out as they don't sell their zenpad line here in Australia but i wouldn't have gone there anyways as their update support is absolutely woeful and i think their bloatware situation is worse the Samsung considering they let anyone buy there way in to get their apps installed. I would have looked at a pixel c but it's out of stock at google and some eBay sellers are asking $1000+ so that's out. I'm not in a hurry to get a new tablet thanks to my dad giving me the nexus 7 2013 i gave him back so I've got something to use in the meantime until something comes out at CES or MWC.

I've owned Galaxy Nexus, N4, N5, both N7's. So, the N9 killed any trust for HTC, not Nexus. I got my older son 6P as his N4 was ageing out. Great phone! Too big for my hands, though. As my N5 was slowing down, I bought a 5X (after replacing DH's i4S with one and discovered I liked it). My first android was a pandigital novel which still works. I then got a 10.1" Toshiba Thrive.

I even tried that as we had two in the family. I replaced older son's ipad 2 with Samsung Tab pro 12.2-both sons got one as they have 1000's of digital comics, and that tab was the best for that. Even after jailbreaking the iPad, it was far too restrictive for me. Loved the display on the iPad. I'm just really picky [emoji20]

Well i took it back and the manager give me a full refund so that's the end of the nexus 9 experiment. Now to play the waiting game to see if any new tablets come out that are interesting.
Good luck.
