[Q] HTC Rezound/Vigor ROM not flashing in fastboot - HTC Rezound

Hi,
I have HTC rezound running on a seemingly stock ROM. It was unlocked but I relocked it using the "fastboot oem lock" command.
According to a guide I went through, you download the ICS image "rezound_AndroidPolice_3.14.605.5_PH98IMG.zip", change the image name, upload it to the phone internal SD, reboot to bootloader and go into fastboot. Fastboot should automatically detect the zip file and start the flashing process. unfortunately this is not happening on my device.
HBOOT shows info below

I am currently using the phone in GSM mode and its been working fine for a while. I just want to flash to a newer GSM based ROM. AOSP or CM will do.
When I try to force using "fastboot boot PH98IMG.zip" I get message below from my command prompt
PS C:\android-sdk\sdk\platform-tools>fastboot boot PH98IMG.zip

I am a little confused here... What is the PH98IMG you are trying to flash? You do NOT flash a ZIP file with this command, fastboot flash commands are to flash specific partitions with their specific image file... I think you are mis-informed about how this all works.
You need to copy the PH98IMG.zip file to the root of the SD card, and reboot into the Hboot, it should detect it and flash it automatically... Or you would "fastboot boot recovery.img" to bring up recovery and flash the ZIP via recovery,

Hi Acejavelin.
Havent done this in a while, last time I flashed a ROM was in 2011. Anyway I sort of managed by using commands below (by the way, I have no SD card, checked and slot is empty). Thats after rebooting to HBOOT and choosing fastboot with USB connected
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip <filename>.zip [had to do this twice, first time it failed]
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot reboot
Thanks for your hints still, will try that. Only issue am having is the "sim card from an unknown source" message.

You should really get a microSD card... Fastboot flashing of ZIP images with stock hboot and recovery are questionable at best, as you have seen... Being S-off makes all this very simple if you have an sdcard. I would also make sure you are on current radios and bootloader.
As far as the unknown SIM message, you will get this on the stock ROM, but will not on a custom ROM... It is not service affecting though, only a visual annoyance.

EVO 3D, S-ON - Hboot 1.49.0018 - GSM - Endless reboot loop

Hi!
I have found similar problems in the forums, but none of the post seem to help my problem here.
My phone can't startup, it just continue to reboot after 15-20 seconds (showing the white screen with the HTC logo)
Hboot info:

I can enter Hboot, have managed to get revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4 on it. Tried a few different ROM's trough the Rev. tool - they seem to install fine, but I still can't start up the phone. Also tried to change my hboot by dl a (PG86IMG.zip) file, seems like it's installing/unzipping when I turn on my device (blue bar at the right hand side of the screen fills up to the top) then nothing happens. The version is the same and so on.
I know I have USB debugging checked and fastboot checked, but I cant turn it off as long as I can't startup my phone? - if this is what causing the problem? Any ideas?
EDIT: I also tried the factoryreset/wipedata/wipe cache from the revo-tool.
Thanks to steveruthless this case is now SOLVED - Thanks again!
how did you fix it?care to share how? thanks
Same problem. How did you solve??

Same problem. If someone got an answer, I would be pleased to know.
If u have hboot 1.49 it would be best to use revaluationarys

I'm not 100% sure since i'm S-On HTC Unlocked CDMA version, but with S-On/ Unlocked, you have to enter recovery via fastboot command prompt (ie: type: fastboot boot YourRecoveryFilename.img ). The filename has to exactly match the filename you flashed to the phone AND the filename that resides in your fastboot folder (you have to leave a copy there, idk why). Once in recovery you can format system, wipe data, and flash rom's & kernels. If you don't enter recovery this way the kernel won't load and you will boot loop.
There are other options, such as JoeyKrim's Flashimage to flash the kernel first, then enter recovery by any method to flash the rest, or you can extract/copy the "boot.img" from the rom's zip, put it in fastboot folder and (type: fastboot flash boot boot.img ) to flash the kernel separately via fastboot command. Doesn't the first option to enter recovery via fastboot just sound more straight forward?
Note: I have some examples in my Guide/flashing notes thread (in my signature) that may help you understand better, but keep in mind its for CDMA version so none of the files I've linked will work with GSM, but the 3rd or 4th post for flashing roms/kernels should help.

Sorry for this taking so long guys..
I fixed my issue by simply using a cmd prompt and boot the img from the zip/rom you have downloaded. I'll try to my make a step by step here:
1. Boot into fastboot and plug in your usb
2. Copy boot.img from the zip/the rom you want installed) and paste it to your Android SDK tools folder. Prob: C:\Android SDK\tools
4. Open a command prompt in C:\Android SDK\tools
5. Write in fastboot boot boot.img the CMD prompt
Voila! Your phone should now be working again.
Whenever you try to flash ROMs always follow these steps , if you are unlocked via HTC method.
Boot your phone in bootloader > Select fastboot > connect to PC >phone should say fastboot-USB > open cmd > navigate to fastboot folder > put your recovery in that folder > pull the boot.img from the ROM you are trying to flash and put it in fastboot folder > then type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" > then type "fastboot boot recovery.img (your recovery name might be different so use that name instead) > Your recovery will boot > Wipe everything first > then flash the ROM.....

Looks like you may be S-off. Try downloading a stock GB Ruu, renaming to ph98img and put it on the root of your sd card. Reboot and hboot should install it. It will take a while and a reboot once before finishing.

You should be able to do a fastboot push.
What would work better would be to fastboot flash Amon-Ra, then you can mount the SD as mass storage.

I'm not big on ADB or Fastboot so I can't tell you how using those tools. However, when I needed to recover after several failed s-off attempts, I used this all in one tool and just selected Flash AmonRa recovery.
Then I would boot into recovery, AmonRa has an option to toggle USB to SD card, so then you could copy whatever from your computer to the SD card.

You can also do the PH98IMG.zip thing this way:
1) Put PH98IMG.zip in fastboot folder
2) fastboot oem rebootRUU
3) fastboot flash zip PH98IMG.zip
4) Wait a long time, when the prompt returns control to you it is done
5) fastboot reboot
6) Let it fire up and all that jazz
7) Then do "fastboot writesecureflag 3" and you will be 100% stock

Okay I downloaded a stock signed RUU renamed it and put it on the root of my sdcard, when I rebooted the phone the phone recognized and I applied the update. It booted up perfectly and the phone is back on stock GB, I dont see where to writesecureflag though, did I have to do that before I let the phone boot all the way into the OS for the first time? Under the fastboot menu I see no option to writesecureflag, do I need to reflash the stock RUU and start again?

There are 4 ways to do it:
Unplug the usb and plug it back again.
Go to the Settings -> Applications -> Development of your device and uncheck the USB debugging mode and then check it again back!
Restart the adb on your PC. adb kill-server and then adb start-server

You will need to be in fastboot. Pull the battery, then reboot holding volume down.
*Note: make sure there is no PH98IMG.zip on your SD card
Once in hboot, select fastboot. Then connect to your PC.
In your command prompt/adb window, type 'fastboot devices' to make sure your PC reads the phone.
Then type 'fastboot oem writesecureflag 3' and you'll be S-On.

was running Mean-rom 4.4
Then tried to install the new apk fix for ringtones

What I have tried:

clear storage in bootloader
reinstall TWRP to get in recovery as if I choose recover in bootloader it just boot loops.
Tried to install the RUU but it can not connect during boot loops and errors out.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Try fastboot wipe recovery then fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, if recovery loops back to bootloader then it's corrupt. Make sure you flash the latest twrp

What terminal? I'm a bit lost here
Do you have adb tools or Android SDK?
C:\android-sdk-windows
Open cmd prompt by opening SDK folder and then hold shift and right click, it will say open cmd prompt or something similar I don't recall if adb is in separate folder but I don't think so. From there you can plug in the phone in fastboot and type fastboot devices, it will tell you if you are connected or not. Download twrp and place it in the same folder. Then you can use the commands I listed earlier

Now that I am in fasboot usb on the bootloader the RUU can connect to phone via USB.
If I just flashed that and started all over would that work and do I need to unroot and relock before doing the RUU?

That's because I haven't used wipe in fastboot in quite a while, I'm sure I'm just confused on wipe and erase but you shouldn't need it, the first command should be fastboot erase recovery but like I said you shouldn't really have to, it's just like formatting before flashing the recovery, just fastboot flash recovery openrecovery.img or what ever the name is for the twrp file

Thanks recovery just loops, could never get in.
Ok this is where I am at (see OP)
We tried flashing TWRP and original recovery via ADB
We tried running RUU
I'm still stuck in a boot loop....
I am having a similar problem stuck in bootloader. I relocked to go to the new firmware and now am stuck in the bootloader. I can access adb but can't access recovery. I am now relocked. Can I unlock again with a fastboot command?
If you unlocked manually, HTC sends the unlock code code just use fastboot to flash, if you used regawmod, just run it again. I don't know if regawmod will recognize the phone in boot loader though

re-read the steps on flashing a ROM...youll find out you need more than just the boot.img file to do it... only time you should have to flash the boot.img is when a new rom is installed but wont boot up...if your phone still boots then youre not installing the ROM properly
You need to supply the information that flashallthetime requested, but you should also be aware that flashing boot.img from fastboot does not flash the ROM and doesn't even flash all the files associated with the kernel. The attached screenshot of the warning that comes up in 4EXT when selecting the "flash boot.img" option expains it better than I can.
If you are S-ON, the proper way to flash a ROM is to "fastboot boot recovery.img" then flash the entire ROM .zip file from recovery, or use 4EXT with the S-ON (SmartFlash) option enabled. You can tell that SmartFlash is working by watching to see if your phone boots twice after your exit recovery. The first boot is used to flash the boot partition and the second boot loads the new kernel and ROM.
Don't confuse the complete kernel with boot.img, which is only one of the files required.

thank you for your replies!!
flashallthetime my hboot version is 1.53.0007 and i am s-on.
I tried to flash the Cool-ICS and the cerom.
ramjet73 i tried flashing several diffrent roms(inclucing both of the above) with the 4ext smartflash enabled, but i only got to the animation an then
the whole process froze. And thank you for the explenation with fastboot i was only flashing the boot.img
i guess this is a total noob question but when i type fastboot boot recovery.img it says thatit cannot load recovery.img Where do i get this file from?
Or can you please link me to the thread with more noob friendly info on flashing roms with s-on?

I'm not familiar with the S-ON flashing guides for GSM which will be a little different than those for CDMA, so someone else will have to help with that, but you can get the recovery.img file for 4EXT that you need from the OP of the XDA thread. It's right above the other download links on that page. Look for the following sentence that has the download link embedded:
If you somehow lost those files, there's a direct download for a version you can flash via fastboot.

the "fastboot boot recovery.img" is just a command to get into recovery. You could also use the command "adb reboot recovery" (unless you are in bootloader mode)
I think the problem is your hboot. loads of people have problems with the newer roms because of the 1.53.xxxx hboot

Thanks again for the quick replies!!!
Ok i got it, but if i am in fastboot and execute fastboot boot recovery.img i get an error , but if i execcute the adb command i get into the recovery normaly.
Have you got any idea on how to fix the hboot problems?
If not is there any easy way of downgrading the hboot except the wire trick becose it looks very dangerous and i realy dont wanna brick my phone.

What error do you get when you try the "fastboot boot recovery.img" command? You have to be in the "fastboot USB" mode in the bootloader to run fastboot commands and if you were the ADB commands wouldn't work which require being booted into Android with "debug" on in the developer settings.

i know that i have to be in fastboot usb mode
it gives me cannot load recovery.img error.
Buuuuut i finaly managed to install yoda´ s ICS custom ROM and EVERYTHING workssss
THX guys
Theres no way to downgrade your hboot without the wire trick my friend. you need s-off to downgrade your hboot. any older hboot could have easily been downgraded and then s-offed
I would suggest you try some other rom. This ones a pretty good rom (sense 4.1 but no 3d) and i'm sure it works with s-on/1.53

The OP cant load his recovery because he might not have a file named "recovery.img" in his fastboot/adb folder.
Flashing a boot.img is just the part of flashing ROM, especialy on S-On state. It still has not flashing your ROM, until you "update from *.zip file" from recovery.

[Q] Rezound Bootloop issue CounterShrike 2.3- recognizes fastboot but not adb

Tried to root and unlock HTC Rezound from 2.3.4 and then flash CounterShrike 2.3 following the Unlockr instructions. Seemed to be going well until it bootlooped at the cyanogen mod screen.
When I connect the phone to the PC and start adb, it only sees the phone in fastboot. What's my best course of action?
Try to flash the kernel off an SD card out of hboot?
Wipe the Countershrike ROM and try to flash the stock ICS?
I've followed the instructions from the developers forum to relock via fastboot, but since I can't access the phone with the adb devices command, I'm hesitant to proceed. Any advice?
Thanks.
Forgot to post the info about the phone from the Fastboot screen:

purchased the phone of eBay. It was on 2.3.4, so I did a factory reset and was trying to get it rooted and on ICS before activating it.
STEP 2:
Opened command prompt from my platform tools & tried to flash AmonRa recovery via fastboot ("fastboot boot rezound-recovery.img") but received an error message:
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.49s]
booting...
FAILED <remote:not allowed>
finished.total time 1.525s
can you post the link to the instructions you followed?
instructions followed
The original set of instructions I followed to root & unlock the phone were @ Unlockr.
I'm currently running through NilsP's protocol:
Latest RUU Leak and Installation Instructions
NOTE: This is only needed if you want the latest ICS Firmware (Good Idea)
Quote:
Download the 4.03.605.2 Global RUU: >> Here. MD5 = bcdd450501e390ce323a46b396cd0a49
Rename the RUU to "PH98IMG.zip". Just remove everything in the name before the PH
Copy the renamed ipdate to the root of your external SD Card.
Re-lock the bootloader. Skip this if S-OFF
Open a DOS prompt and change directory to the folder where you have fastboot.exe
Reboot to bootloader
Type "fastboot oem lock" (No Quotes) while you are in bootloader (fastboot usb).
Reboot to bootloader again via recovery menu.
The bootloader should find the PH98IMG.zip file and scan it.
Scanning will take awhile so be patient. When it prompts you say yes. The update will make the first pass. This will take awhile so just watch the progress bar on the right The phone will reboot and sit on the white HTC screen. This could be awhile so be patient and don't get nervous. When it is done it will reboot back to bootloader to run the second pass of the install. Again, this will take some time so just watch the progress bar and OK's on the list. When it is done it will say "press power to reboot" so do it. Now it will boot into the leaked Update.
Once booted skip everything in setup. If you plan to run it stock then just get it set up to your liking
Install Amon Ra recovery version 3.15 (My Preference) If hboot will show tampered at the top but that is normal
Flash my ROM using the instructions in post 1
It's alive running stock...phwew! since I bought it for my wife to replace her DINC that's acting up.:highfive:
Your issue earlier was that you were on gingerbread firmware trying to run an ICS rom. Updating to the newest RUU updated you to ICS firmware.
