[Toolkit] Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v2.1.4 [Updated 01/16/16]: Nexus 6 Thread - Nexus 6 Android Development

Unlocking, rooting, relocking and unrooting simplified! (and much more!)
VERSION 2.1.4 - This program will automatically bring together all the files you need to unlock and root your device in a few clicks, or flash it back to stock and re-lock it. You can also use this program to backup/restore all your important data, flash zips, set file permissions, push and pull files, install apps, generate logcats/bugreports, and much more! With the included file association options, you can perform tasks like flashing zips, installing apps, restoring android backup files, and flashing/booting img files with just a double click! The program includes a full featured interface for automating tasks in TWRP, enhanced restore features, an in-built auto-updater/notification system, ‘any build’ mode, advanced restore features,’NRT- Live Log’ for viewing the adb/fastboot cmds that are run in the background, quick tools utilities, and tools for taking screenshots/screen-recordings. All the latest official Android builds and Nexus devices are supported. The program intelligently and selectively downloads the files it needs for your device and makes sure you are using the latest files available. The program can even auto-detect your device and build. This release brings full Marshmallow root support plus all automated features by utilizing a new system that no longer requires modified boot.imgs. Check out the updated changelog for a more comprehensive breakdown of the feature set and changes in this release.
~ my goal for this project is make the entire process as smooth and simple as possible ~

Awesome. This makes it so much easier.
Thanks!

Does this use chainfires method?

Nothing but the best! Thx OP

:good::good::good::good:

AWESOME.
I used this on all my Nexus devices.

Any plans to include the encryption removal into this?

nice work as always

Yes, although NRT's procedure is different, the technical aspect of the root is identical. I compiled a build specific root_kernel with the modification necessary to enable SuperSU flashing. Chainfire is currently testing a new method that does not rely on the kernel modification (until google inevitably patches it) - if that zygote method is deemed stable, then NRT will adopt the new SuperSU zip at that time and no longer use "root kernels".
NRT's advanced utilities has a simple button dedicated to restoring the stock kernel - so that will be an easy way to get back stock kernel if and when Chainfire announces that his new method is the standard.
{{ WugFresh }}

One last question.... I downloaded this for the nexus 5. Assuming I just need to update the program?

I can do that. The way I will have to implement it ultimately depends on weather or not Chainfire's new SuperSU method works or not. Either way I will have to write some scripts on my end to auto-make those those non-forced-encryption boot.imgs per each build - however, I will have to also include the root_kernel modification if the new SuperSU method isn't adopted. I will wait for now to see what happens.
But yeah, should be possible and something I wouldn't mind coding.

Correct. Once you hit update (or let it auto-update on start if you have that enabled), you should see Nexus 6 as an available device in the pull down.
{{ WugFresh }}

Would definitely love this!
Was going to do it tonight, but I'll just wait for it in your toolkit.
Love all your work. Thanks!

Ooh. So this gets root on the N6 right now? Mine will be arriving today, hopefully in the next hour or so, so I'm just trying to get everything prepared ahead of time, so I can get my bootloader unlocked, get root, and install TWRP.

Hey Wug, the changelog and supported devices list makes no mention of Nexus 6. Having already had one instance of a guy using NRT on a Nexus 6 before support was actually there....is there N6 support already and the device support list just needs updated?

Hey guys, i know this is an old thread. But I have recently got a 2013 xt1058, and Windroid 3.1 (any version actually) just wouldnt flash twrp/cwm into my device. I have tried the default "flash a recovery" option, I have tried flashing recovery though "commands" (2.8.0.1, 2.8.7.0, and cwm 6.57.9). In fact, I have also tried manually fastboot flashing the recovery .img and they all give me the same result. "Success", but when I boot into recovery, it is stock recovery. I am wondering if anyone can point out what I am doing wrong?
EDIT: treid both on 4.4.2 and 4.4.4, same result

Are you rebooting immediately to recovery or going to Android first and then trying to boot to recovery?
IIRC, there's a script in /system/etc/ that will bring back stock recovery so if you go first to Android then TWRP or CWM will be replaced.
after installing / flashing, then reboot and IMMEDIATELY hold down power && Vol- then from the bootloader enter Recovery. the latest TWRP, i think, has a patch to remove this script, but you can also mount /system and use the file manager to verify.

Will this wipe the current ROM back to new installation? I've used WinDroid a few months ago to root my Moto X Style (Pure) and I recall it wiping my ROM to a fresh installation. Just asking because it took me a while to install all of the current Apps and Kodi add-ons.
My main reason for wanting to root is to sideload Greenify and AdAway so that Nvidia TV will run more smoothly. Any ideas?

About the Project
I bought this phone two weeks back and as a web developer, had this idea of combining JavaScript and device communication. The project is built on Electron. The basic UI is adapted from Electron API Demos.
The source is available on Github.
Porting it to another device
Porting the toolkit to another device is easy. Change a few strings, variables and necessary files like recovery image and you are done. After all every phone can communicate with your computer with ADB or Fastboot.
Credits
This project bundles the work of many other devs.
*@vache for potter TWRP, boot.img and WiFi patch.

Issues
1. TWRP backups saved to computer might fail to restore. The ones saved to phone work fine.
2. TWRP gets stuck on logo if booted instead of flashed.

God I wish this was out when I did things manually ?
But how are the newbies supposed to brick their phones now?
Day late, dollar short... Seriously, nice toolkit. Will there be an update soon now that @vache just released a new TWRP that supports sd mount?

You'll learn the most by doing things manually! Being spoon fed is easy, but not always necessarily the safest way. (someone might give you 'bad food'). I always like to know what command I give!
Nevertheless: nice scripts!

Does it work on the normal Moto G5, or just on the Plus version?

Agreed. But after a while having to not go through all the steps is pretty nice.

Ouch. I just got rid of my v20 for this g5 plus. That v20 is a mess of a phone, especially when it comes to rooting. Good luck!
Haha I think we need more than good luck mate
But thanks
Hi all,
In case anybody is interested, I just used this on my (un-messed with) phone. Mine was a UK, 32/2 gig, dual sim moto 5-plus. Worked perfectly, flawlessly, fantastically! It just worked... Used on Ubuntu linux.
Thanks DrTechie, you're a star dev.
I had been worried about installing TRWP after reading other threads, but this works. And because it's a gui with scripts, there aren't any real instructions to follow - that you could get wrong. Very well designed.
For what it's worth, I chose not to install su. This means it's not truly rooted, and such things as Android Pay should still work. But, with the bootloader unlocked, and a good functioning custom recovery - I can flash any rom I need. And, I can flash su anytime.
Thanks!!!

1. Clone the git repo
https://github.com/drtechie/moto-g5p-toolkit
2. You will need NodeJS installed and build tools.
Refer to https://electron.atom.io/docs/ build env instructions
Setting up the build enviroment is easiest in Linux.
macOS will need XCode tools and Windows will need Visual Studio etc.
Do npm install to get all Node dependencies.
Build Electron-usb (This checks for usb attach-detach events)
3. In the file main.js L19 you will see global.strings.deviceName = 'potter'
Change 'potter' to your device name.
4. Fire up the app with 'npm start' or 'gulp'
Subsequent ADB and Fastboot requests will check for the new device name.
Hopefully your device should be detected.
5. Then the files - TWRP, SuperSU etc
check main-process/common/files.js
Change the name of the twrp recovery to your new file name twrp-<device>.img or whatever.
Copy the same to files folder.
Now try flashing the recovery.
Now you get the idea, I hope.
6. There are main-process/common/adb.js and fastboot.js which carry out core ADB and Fastboot commands.
File names for SuperSU will have to be changed if you change them.
Some methods are named checkMoto etc. You can change them if you feel so.

Glad I could help.
I have nothing to do with TWRP. I just copy pasted the file. It was developed by @vache.
@drtechie re: post #16
Thanks for your time, it's really appreciated.
I'm not a Dev by any means, but I'll have a look through the info you've provided. Maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to understand how to accomplish it.
Wish me luck
Is there any way to avoid unlocking bootloader via Moto website??
what is the purpose of flashing custom bootloader? i dont seem to get it. i am yet to receive my mobile but still curiosity. anyone who has experience please elaborate along with hurdles new one might face like me.
thank you

Let Me DowngradeAndroid's app installation system does not allow users to downgrade to an older version of an app when they already have a newer version installed. Let Me Downgrade is an Xposed module for Android 12 and 13 that enables users to bypass this restriction. As an added bonus, Let Me Downgrade provides a Quick Settings tile to easily enable and disable the downgrade block.
WARNING: Let Me Downgrade is intended for rooted devices running Android 12 or 13 and requires Xposed. The recommended Xposed variant to use is LSPosed. Other Xposed variants may work, but have not been tested. Additionally, this module cannot be guaranteed to work on all devices. In the worst case, it can cause a bootloop. Use at your own risk.

To use Let Me Downgrade:
Install LSposed. This requires your device to be rooted with Magisk. Installation instructions for LSPosed are available here.
Install Let Me Downgrade.
Activate the Let Me Downgrade module in the LSposed user interface.
Reboot your device and sign in.
Open the quick settings panel. The Let Me Downgrade tile will appear.
Toggle the Let Me Downgrade tile on or off to enable or disable it.

Nice work! I assume this does not have backward compatibility, i.e. it won't work on older Android versions, and only supports Android 13? Also, consider submitting it in the Xposed-Modules-Repo.

Thank you! Unfortunately, this does not have backwards compatibility with older versions of Android. Adding support for allowing downgrades on Android 5 through 12 would actually be pretty easy, but adding support for the quick settings tile to toggle the module on and off would not be, and I do not really think that it is worth the effort of doing so considering that anyone using Android 5-12 will probably already be using XDowngrader.
I should also note that the developer of XDowngrader actually published an update to support Android 13 soon after I published this module, however I would recommend that Android 13 users opt for my module instead because:
Let Me Downgrade is open source but XDowngrader is not.
Let Me Downgrade allows you to toggle the module's functionality on and off without rebooting your phone through a Quick Settings tile. This is useful for if you want to temporarily allow app downgrades, but would prefer to leave app downgrades disabled in most other cases.
As far as publishing on the Xposed Modules Repo is concerned, I have actually done that! The repo entry for this module is available here.
Could you add support for android 11 and 12. That would be pretty nice!

I can add support for Android 12 pretty easily, but anything older than that, I don't think so because the Quick Settings tiles may not work and I don't have a phone to test it on.
For the convenience of users who prefer to not use the Google Play Store, I am pleased to announce that Let Me Downgrade is now available on F-Droid!
Let Me Downgrade | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository
Add support for downgrading apps on Android 12 and 13
f-droid.org
Several users have requested support for Android 12. I am pleased to announce that Let Me Downgrade v1.0.2 adds this support.
Now I follow all steps but how I can start the downgrade?

After enabling the module, the downgrade process is no different than the installation or update process that you use when sideloading an app. You can use ADB to do it or you can use a file explorer app to install the older version of the app.
Not sure I get it... If I want to go back to an older version of an app, can't I just clear it's cache and uninstall the new ver. then install the old one?

You can, but that would mean you would lose your app settings. If you use Let Me Downgrade, you'll be able to install the old version on top of the old one and retain your settings. Please note however that just because you downgrade your app in place does not mean things will work if the newer version has made internal structural changes to how the data is stored.
Gotcha!
Any way you could add the ability to disable signature verification as well?

It would probably be more appropriate for me to make that be a separate module, but yes, it is possible.
@David B.
I'd be more than willing to donate towards having disable signature verification, as I'm not finding any publicly available tools for A13

When time permits, I can and will research this. Unfortunately, I'm preoccupied with other things at the moment and have had to set aside doing Xposed module development work. If you or anyone else wants to experiment and submit a PR for it, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for sharing Core Patch. I wasn't aware of its existence. Even though it doesn't work on Android 13, it might be able to serve as a good resource for me to figure out where I need to hook.
