[MOD][WORKLOG] Adding micro sd card to expand memory capacity - Nexus 9 Original Android Development

Hello all!
I am going to start work on adding a usb micro sd card reader to the nexus 9. I started off by taking off the nexus 9 backplate (very easy, just need a finger nail to get the clips undone) and you are immediately greeted with the internals of the tablet. The first thing I noticed is an indentation for what I believe to be where the micro sim card would go for the LTE version of the tablet, it could also be a place were they were going to put a micro sd expansion slot but may have ruled it out in the end. I also noted that there is some grooves for routing wires down to the micro usb slot, which would definitely make it easier to keep the wires clean looking. the micro sd card adapter I was thinking of using is this one: http://www.amazon.com/elago-Nano-Mo...6610073&sr=1-10&keywords=micro+sd+card+reader
I would end up tripping of the usb connector for the reader and soldering wires straight from the read to the mobo.
Take a look at the pictures enclosed and let me know if you have any suggestions.
Stay tuned! More updates to come!

You beet me to this
I will most likely do this

You're looking to take over the usb connection as OTG? Or?

@minnieman
if your going to use this as an OTG
you will need to have a switch to turn it off

Duely noted.

Nice idea but this is definitly the wrong forum for this. Not Original Android development. This belongs in the general section.

Any progress yet?

Don't know if came across this threads. soldering a micro sd card has been tried before, maybe you can find some useful info here.

This is the (electric) solution.
But with a Tablet....

Quick question op regarding removing the back panel. Were there any issues with the camera coming off as well? In ifixit's tear down they said the camera popped off along with the back panel because it was too snug. I will be taking mines off but have been hesitant because if this.

Hey, any updates on this?

[Q] usb thumbdrive not mounting

My first post, but I've been reading in this forum for two months, a couple hours each day. It's habit forming.
Gtab, tnt lite v.4.1.0
I have a USB adapter made by Sigg that has a 16gig microSD inserted. Formatted (several times) FAT32. When inserted in the gtab USB host slot the disk is not mounted without a lot of plugging and unplugging and praying to the gods. There have been a few messages telling me that the 'card is damaged' when it is not. The microSD card works fine when inserted in the gtab's microSD slot. But it can take hours of fiddling to get the card to mount in the USB slot.
After lots of searching it seems that everyone else takes USB flash drives on the gtab for granted. They all seem to work. Mine doesn't, but works fine in my XPpro 32bit laptop.
If anyone can give me some ideas for troubleshooting this I'd appreciate it.
By the way, this forum is something of a phenomenon. After looking at the gtab threads I went out and bought mine at Sears. What better way to get acquainted with Android? My thanks go out to everyone here who has contributed. Someday I might be able to contribute as well.
I think about ways to better manage the gtablet xda forum, a lot. It has become a monster - but it's not a bad monster, more like a cute and cuddly Sesame Street monster.
How to organize all this fabulous information so that it can be easily searched and utilized? Good question.
All I can say is - keep up the good work. This forum is a fantastic resource.
Thanks all
Two thoughts:
First: I'd change the title. This isn't a thumbdrive issue, really, so much as a USB SD Reader problem.
Second: I've run into similar issues myself. But I've noticed that I have a couple odd ball readers tht don't work on Mac but does work on Windows. This may be a driver issue. My suggestion would be to try another SD card reader and see if that makes a difference.
I also have a USB adapter with a micro SD inside of it. I find that it does not mount on bootup, but it mounts fine if I remove it and re-insert it.
I was wondering if there is an app for sending a software command to mount the USB. I have looked, but have not found.
smalis, my question exactly!
Taking aaltieri's reply into consideration I experimented with a plain-jane thumbdrive, an adapter with a standard SD, and my adapter with the microSd. Others have demonstrated that adapters with more than one slot will not work. Both my adapters have one slot only.
So here's the intriguing results: The plain-jane thumbdrive is just as unreadable as both adapters UNLESS you boot the machine with the adapter/thumbdrive in the slot, then remove it and put it back in. Then they all read after a short detection period. BUT once the drives are removed after detection they cannot be read again until the machine is shut down and rebooted with the drive in, then remove it and put it back in for detection.
What we need is a method for mounting and unmounting USB drives. I've searched and cannot find a way to unmount the drive under tnt lite. It does not show up in settings/storage like the sd cards do.
By the way, the little Sigg adapter is very tiny, sticking out only 1/4" from the side of the gtab. I got it at Fry's Electronics for $6. I leave it in the slot full-time and it helps keep the power button from being activated when the gtab's inside it's sleeve. I use a Belkin 'non-slip' netbook sleeve (also at Fry's) and the gtab fits only slightly loose. I use a couple of ultrathin mouse pads/screen protectors, one on each side, to increase padding. The Belkin sleeve is difficult to drop due to the grippy sides. The ultrathin mouse pads are marketed for netbook use, to put under the lcd when closing the lid to protect the screen (also Fry's Electronics - what can I say, I'm hooked on the place).
The idea I had was to have 16gig in the SD slot and 16gig in the USB slot. The 32gig microSDHC's are cost prohibitive for me right now. And I still have 11gig remaining on the internal memory. I'd better get to work filling it . . .
Yeah, I have one of those tiny USB micro-SD adapters also (elago Mobile Nano II USB 2.0 microSDHC Flash Memory Card Reader from Amazon), and am very happy with its small footprint.
I had same idea as you - I have a Wintec 16 GB Class 10 MicroSD (~$30 on Newegg) in the SD slot and another one in the USB slot.
However, I have no problem reading the USB slot after unplugging and plugging it in once, or multiple times.
The only time I cannot read it is when I boot with it in. Then, I have to unplug it and plug it in once.
Yours seems more flaky.
Just wanted to note that I had similar issues reading the contents of a FAT32 formatted thumbdrive when using the default iFileManager on Vegan. I downloaded the File Manager app by Adao Team on the market and I can read the thumbdrive contents just fine when using that app.
A follow up for anyone interested.
I migrated to vegantab 5.1 to get mouse and keyboard functionality. I also loaded the small update to 5.1 that has sniffer included.
I don't think sniffer is much to write home about, but it does mount all the usb 2.0 drives and even all the multi-adapters that I've thrown at it. Some posts have pointed out that the multi-adapters don't work. But they do, at least in my experience. I used a Sony adapter that has sd, micro-sd, sony's memory stick, compact flash, and some other port. My 16gig compact flash cards from my camera are read without a problem AFTER opening sniffer. The iFile manager that comes with vegantab does not see the usb 2.0 or the adapter until sniffer is opened. Then the system sees the drives with no problem.
It works every time.
I decided to use an HP wireless mini keyboard. It's a perfect match for the gtab. I thought about dropping $80 for the new Verbatim folding bluetooth keyboard but the HP allows for much better touch typing and I need to do that. Best Buy has a cd/dcd carrying case made by Init that is essentially a hard case that fits the HP keyboard perfectly one the cd sleeves are removed. There's room under the keyboard for headphones, flash memory, and other odds and ends. With vegatab and the mouse fix, the keyboard is easily detected and the mouse pointer works great.
Anyway, it looks as if the mounting issue is one that can easily be taken care of with an app. Another more recent poster on this issue has noted that changing file managers allowed him to mount usb drives that iFileManager would not see. But sniffer works and it's there for seperate download if anyone wants it. I think it looks like crap and doesn't do much. I'll use it in the meantime, though.

I didn't even think of Sniffer. I have a cheapo USB reader that was intermittently working (1 out of 60?). After your suggesting, if I open sniffer then plug it in, it sees it every time.
Folks,
I don't know that there is an answer I have seen to all your questions/observations.
I will say:
1. microSD post and USB on the tablet are not plug and play like Windows.
2. When I change my USB key or microSD, I always shut down and likewise I
always shut down before removing them.
3. Yes, I know that's a pain if you change a lot, but for me it makes sure
Android's flicted OS searches for, finds them, and in turn properly shuts them
down before I remove them.
For me, in and out as need just doesn't work.
Rev
EDIT: P. S. -- You all seemed like sharp guys. Should I have asked if you
are looking for the files under /USBdisk?
In my experience, thumb drive mounting is hit and miss. Maybe it's just the drives that I'm using, but it's unreliable. Also, with Gingerbread and Pershoot's kernels, he references having to revert something in order to get USB mount to work (thinking about it, that might refer to mounting the tab to a computer). I would suggest getting used to unmounting your external micro card in Android and growing out a fingernail or two so you can pop that sucker out. I think this is a low priority to the devs, and maybe it should be.

[Q] [q] tf101 hardware mods inside dock pictures!!!!!

Thread for hardware mods
POSTING INTERNAL tf101 pictures
like 3g dongle ? internal sd cards? ssd?
removing the battery for 2 HDD 500go?
finding sd cards hubs? usb to sata cables?
? there is a place in the tablet for a 3g dongle?
there are 2 screws under the upper rubbers and the dock open easy
there is a lot of spaces avaible
My MIFI might actually fit in there, all I would need to do is supply it power somehow.
I'm no hardware engineer though, but if thats possible it would save you from the driver issues with a 3g dongle.
I wonder if it would be possible to check which pins from the adapter connect to USB - so we can make DIY USB adapter for those without a dock.
hmm adding an hdd would be very interesting, sata won't be very hard, powersupply will be.
Sent from my O2x with CM7
This is what I was looking for, looking to do some mods to the dock.
Thanks Markolino72.
Internally mount and wire a 32gb memory stick to the USB port so you get a 32gb hard drive added whenever you dock It might even have enough room for a portable USB hub so you don't lose use of the external usb port?
does anybody think it will be easy to make a DIY dock fix for those with battery draining issues like me?
It seems like it would be relatively easy - just make a switch to either connect or disconnect the cords coming from the docking point.
Or even better, maybe if you put the correct microcontroller in there you can have it switch the pins to floating, if it senses that there is no tablet connected (not sure about the details though)...

Have you seen the post in the General forum (2nd page now I think)? Posted by Asus_USA themselves, if you prove the 6 steps that your dock has the issue you can get a new one! I really do hope that I can get mine exchanged, waiting on a reply from my local service center..
Regards.
In regards to the hardware mods, that really looks amazing. Would love to put in my mifi there as well, attach it via USB to charge = your own 3g model Maybe a little modding you could get the mifi to power on only when the dock is connected (remove the battery of the mifi?) so that when it powers on it'll power on the mifi as well. Only a few thoughts.

it's a good thought but the mifi I have (novatel 2200) wont work without the battery, for some reason if the battery is bad or removed you cannot run usb, it must be the way they have the power run through the battery or charging. Not sure if all are like this or not.

I talked to the Asus service rep about it. They currently won't give you a new one since they have a hardware upgrade to fix it. If you wanted a new one you needed to do before they solved the problem. I'm waiting on the upgrade part to be delivered for for mine. Should in a few days.
A switch should theoretically work. The guy at the service center said the replace something that goes into the hinge of the dock. Looking at the teardown pics, you can see a wire goes into each side of the hinge, so I think they replace the wires and maybe make a new connection somewhere on the dock.
Surprising how much wasted space there seems to be in the dock -- it's nowhere near as tightly packaged as the tablet itself. Looks like Asus can optimize the size or fit some more features in future versions, if they want...
Let me see if I am thinking correctly...Your saying using something like mifi installed via USB wires (will it be always on?) then connect via WiFi on your transformer? So basically your putting the mifi in a case that can never be opened without a screwdriver? I guess one would always have access for your other devices as well as long as the TF is in the vicinity.
P.S. I think I think this is a good idea, not decided though. I like to think of it in a real world application.
there is another post with a guy putting in an SSD, but it bulges at the keyboard. A 32g SD card would be nice.

There's very little chance they'll give anybody the part, and nothing in the previous person's post suggested they're doing so for him.

Well I ended up calling them. I would have to ship the dock to "someone" in the US, have them ship it to the repair center, fix it, ship it back and then ask that "someone" to ship it back to me... sooo, I'm basically screwed... I ended up with a nice 150US paperweight (not even considering the horrible light bleed on the transformer).

Yeah, actually, I hadn't realized that but it does say it clearly on the product warranty page:
"Brazil and South American countries don’t support global service"
http://support.asus.com/warranty.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=20&s=16&m=Eee Pad Transformer TF101
took mine apart also and there is quite a bit of room.
i plan on putting a 128gb usb flash drive inside the dock and soldering onto the usb connections once i get all the bits in.
Any bigger pictures? Are the screws under the rubber feet?
just two screws under the rubber feet near the hinge then it just pulls apart from the top
had to take mine apart as the spring/clip mechanism for the sd card wouldnt lock the card in.
now the card is stuck in with no nails haha a simple fix.
This is good news. I hacked a Crystal HD decoder card (pcie), USB wifi dongle, a logitech nano receiver, and a 4 port micro usb hub (from a touch screen setup) into a Dell mini 9 and there was absolutely no room compared to this.
They even have covers for the USB ports, so if you remove a header and solder wires up you just have to hot glue / epoxy that cover from the back and you are money. Looks clean and stock.
I have an old 64 GB thumbdrive that might find a new home. Maybe a 1.8" usb HDD would fit in there with the battery, without the battery who knows.

MicroSD not fully fitting into case

Hi,
my microSd card doesn't slide fully into the case. The original plastic card is 2 mm short and has been fine tuned that it is cut at the end, so it does not stuck out.
So with card inserted i feel it with my left hand it looks out of the device.
Anybody that has a card that fits perfect?

Its normal

mine seems even with the volume rocker, doesn't stick out passed that.
May be normal, but it is bunk. You can hit the card and I fear losing it as it sticks out a lot IMHO. Bad design.
i just pulled mine out of the TF101 that fitted perfect there and now i also fear loosing it etc.
Just crap, there is no excuse for me. Especially if it where somewhere else where you do not hold it it would not be so boring.
My microSD sticks out of the slot too. Didn't do that on the original TF101 but with this one it's too easy to hit it by accident and have it fall out. I did that yesterday and happened to see that it was not latched in, ready to fall out. I compared the card with the blank insert and the blank is quite a bit smaller. You can sand down the excess I guess?
BUT in sanding warranty on the card is gone and I would think you would have to worry about heat build up damaging it in some way unless you went slow - don't use a dremel Plus, be mindful of the dust and introducing that into the cards metallic slots.
Nevertheless, sanding is a hack and not sure why they did not recess the slot more to be flush as it is totally not flush. Not even close.
That annoys me and also the sd card on the bottom taskbar annoys me. I wish I could remove that icon.

This is the kind of stuff that unlocked bootloaders and root can do. Someone can tweak the files or hack a fix to remove that notification - just like they have already made a hack to remove the permanent google search on the home screen seen now in ICS. It also annoys me as it is not a logical place for it. And hell, we already know we have a card it... we can feel the damn thing sticking up
Okay listen to me this is the standard micro sd card size from the sd association
microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC
15 mm × 11 mm × 1.0 mm
Now look here on pages 13-14 the SD specifications gives them a maximum minimum and normal sizes for every single dimension on a card
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=..._uyKAg&usg=AFQjCNHejdZXdsfJRJPcT4PEWKJqDTm2PA
so they are almost allowed a whole mm don't blame ASUS for this they designed the port for the shortest length so you can pull the card out

can someone post a picture of how much a micro SD sticks out? why would they choose to design it like this?

Yes, you will have two notification icons on the bottom right, and if you plug in a USB thumb drive or portable drive you will get a third. The full size SD card also sticks out of its slot further then on the OG Transformer.

Full size SD card adapter for EVO 3D

Hi, as you can probably tell I'm new here but definately not in experienced in the tech area. Anyway I'll skip straight to the problem at Hand.
I have been googling hard away the last couple of days for anything along the lines of 'full size SD card adapter for smartphone' etc.
I sadly haven't located one or even seen one, a forum I visited had 1 person in possession of a micro usb powered full size SD card adapter, but was connected to a tablet so I have no idea if it would work on a 3D. No links on where he purchased it either:/
Does anyone here have a link as to where I might be able to buy one of these adapters, or somewhat further information about the actual chances of the 3D being able to support one?
The main reason I need one is because my DSLR camera uses full size SD cards and I needed a way to transfer images to my phone, touch them up with apps and have them ready to share as I'm shooting.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Almost all MicroSD aftermarket cards come with a SD adaptor such as the one below:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231509
I bought one from dealextreme for about $7 several years ago. The problem is fitting the adapter in the phone. But for your use, perhaps you can just use it temporarily without the back cover on the phone.
The adapter has a small ribbon cable that connects to a micro SD plastic piece. The ribbon cable extends out to a larger plastic slot for a full size SD card.
The problem with our phone is that the microsd card sits flush with the battery. I'm not sure if there's enough room to fit the ribbon cable between the microsd side of the adapter - and the battery. If I can find my adapter - I'll check tonight.
The easy way to make this "permanent" would be to use an extended battery back cover, without actually using an extended battery. Otherwise, there's definitely not enough room behind the stock cover for the adapter.
Thanks for the replies but I don't want to have to buy another micro SD to put in a full SD in my camera. I just need a USB card adapter like the 7 in 1 types you see at most stores but one compatible for an evo:/

With Olympus Rom and Chad Goodman's Anthrax kernel it is possible to enable USB Host, which as is sounds will allow you to connect camera straight to evo (with USB OTG Cable). At this time it is really hit or miss whether it will work on your phone, some people have got it to work and others not...That is where I am at the moment. Chad is in the process of making it work on all evo 3Ds as long as they are running a rom with usb host mode enabled (Olympus is the only rom at the moment with this feature I believe). Chad has been able to use the function on his phone and had sucess with usb keyboard and usb external drive.

That is NOT what I was suggesting, I was suggesting that this might work:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/sd-to-microsd-transflash-card-converter-module-27001
But I don't think it will fit safely into the EVO3D's microSD slot. The plastic piece which connects to the normal microSD slot is longer than a regular microSD - and will crash against the battery, unless it was bent. I was not willing to try to bend my adapter for this check, sorry.
I think your best bet is to root your phone to one of the ROM's that handles USB host as suggested above.

I think your best bet is to root your phone to one of the ROM's that handles USB host as suggested above.

Well I happen to own the GSM model with which the SD card slot would work with this no problem as it is on the side facing outwards without any battery interfering with it. I might look into that at the later.
A further question about gaining USB host through rooting does anyone know how to root a GSM model with HBOOT 1.49.0013 on Vodafone Au? If not then I will have to settle for the adapter displayed above which wouldn't bother other than the fact is that I want to transfer photos from the Full SD to the Micro SD not to internal memory as that could take a while as the files arn't particularly small:/
If this is sounding strange its like the adapter Apple made for the iPad called 'camera connectivity kit' etc. This is a small inch by inch brick that simply plugs into the charging port and accepts SD cards for transfer to the internal memory.

Broken micro sd card slot

Hi, as embarrassing as this is to admit, while trying to put my micro sd card into my phone I accidentally inserted the micro sd into my phone upside down. It got lodged in and while trying to shimmy it out I accidentally pulled out an unidentifiable piece of hardware. The phone still works fine though I double checked everything (Calling, touch screen, internet, etc.) But I can safely say that I won't be able to insert any micro sd cards. Does anyone know if any guides on the internet (Preferably video as to how to take the phone apart and order the right parts to fix my honor 5x?
Watch jerryrigeverything on youtube... He not only teaches on how to take the phone apart but also links to extra parts...
