[Q] Maximum support size 64 or 128gb micro sd? - Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Hello,
As the title asks. Does anyone know if a 128 gb micro SD card will work in the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact? I ask because I know that usually, the limit these machines can handle is 64gb. And if so, does anyone use a 128GB card, and which one would you suggest? Many thanks for your time in reading this post and answering.

According to Sony spec. it supports up to 128 GB SDXC. Unfortunately I did not double check on my device.

Yes 128 works good on this baby

do you know if it supports uha-1 speeds?

Yes, i have 128gb class 10 and it works a charm.
I think your question is UHS1 OR 3 etc...
Mine is class 10 UHS1 and it is ok.
Any class 10 should be good enough, and if it has UHS rating, it is faster than those without UHS classification.
FYI, mine is Sandisk ultra.

Guys don't ever get sandisk ultra 64gb. I had 3 of their cards which was purchased at the same time and unfortunately it failed. The issue is rampant on their 64gb ultra (google Sandisk ultra cannot delete files). My micro sd suddenly became a read only device. Files are intact but i cant modify contents which means i cannot do format erase and anything. Practically it became a useless card. Already did windows low level format, tried to check drive permissions and it was not set in read only, no virus. The writting controller chip just broke down. for those who are planning to buy a card and have their cameras and their 4K vids automatically save in the sd card, then don't buy sandisk (at least The 64gb ultra). It seems their cards can't take much writing before it breaks

It's a shame you can't move any apps to the SD card, I have the LTE version and 16GB isn't enough space when you have a few games installed.

64GB microSDXC in Xperia Ray

Not sure the development forum is the right place, but it's the only forum that is Xperia Ray related. I wanted to say that I bought a 64GB microSDXC card, reformatted it to FAT32 in my computer, and my Xperia Ray accepts it just fine, all GB's are there.
I mention this in this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25023349#, but that is not an Xperia thread.
See attachment.. (sorry, can't find screenshot on the ICS beta, still waiting for the release in my country, or an image that I can flash from my mac)
I was not patient enough to fill the full 64gb with the SD Card Tester, but I went up to 33gb, so past the 32gb limit.
wow, that's good news
ps : screenshot in ics : hold volume down and power button for a second, and voila
Nice, my 32 is pretty full but I'll probably wait till the price drops.

Nice man
but the 64GB card price is too expensive to me
This is great news! Which brand of the card are you using? We can perhaps maintain a list of supported cards for the ray.
The memory card I used is:
SanDisk Mobile Ultra 6 MicroSDXC 64GB
By the way, the SD Card Tester indeed reached a continuous write speed of 6 MB/s, in agreement with the card being "Class 6". Initially it peaked at something around 10 MB/s.
there was a recent drop in price for this card to USD 69.50, and i was about to purchase it, but change my mind and got the new sandisk mobile ultra class 10, i will still get this sometime next week.
if anyone needs to know the speed.
sandisk 64GB class 6
using UHS I card reader
read 38mb/s
write 6-8mb/s
high speed card reader (non UHS I)
read 19-21mb/s
write 6-8mb/s
sandisk 32GB class 10
using UHS I card reader
read 38mb/s
write 11.5-13mb/s
high speed card reader (non UHS I)
read 19-21mb/s
write 11.5-13mb/s

With the recent drop in price, the class 10 just showed up, so i'm guessing a 64GB class 10 should be around the corner.

You can't format directly from the phone, the option is unavailable.
With Win 7 64bits, you need a software in order to format the micro sd card (example : EaseUS partition master home edition)
You can
I can confirm I formatted my SanDisk SDXC 64GB in the phone (gingerbread at that time). I was and I am still not able to use my card using the reader connected to Win7 directly, but connecting throught the phone works as expected. Great thing. Really looking forward to 128GB
You guys listen to music on ray a lot or what?
Taking a lot of pics and still not used half of my 4GB class 2, but I will move to 8GB class 10 one for better speed.
Glad to know a 64gig works on our ray, I thought it could only cope with a 32gb. Foggy I have a 32gb in mine atm but only have 9gb left, yes I do have lots of photos and videos and music lol

format X: /FS:FAT32 /Q, where X: is the letter of your phone's memory card

Micro SD support?

Hi guys, i have a great (for me haha) doubt.
I like to record a lot of videos with my smartphone, like to have a lot of music and heavy games when i wan to, but my micro sd 8gb class 4 isnt enough.
I interesed in use a 32gb micro sd class 10, how as Kingston or Sandisk. WT19i Supports that?
Additionaly, i have an offer for a sandisk ultra 32gb class 10 (refferential link) Does Wt19i support this memory?
What do you think?
Wait ur oppinions

sandisk....
bcz i also have a class 6 32gb on my mini pro...
reading speed around 25mb/sec writing 10mb/sec
i noticed gallery loads up really fast.
I have 16gb Patriot class 10. Reading around 20mb/s, writing 10mb/s connected as MSC i regret not getting the 32gb.
i have sk17i, and it recognizes 32gb class10 samsung micro sd, i think both phones are nearly the same, so the wt19i should also support
I bought a new 32GB sd card, and after I fill it with data, the phone starts to lag I have rooted wt19i and the sd card is not broken. I dont know if this is possibly a rom issue
Yeah it should work i use a sandisk class 4 32gb works perfick in my sk17i

I'm with A-Data 16GB Class10 and the phone works perfect. I was trying with 32GB Class10, without to full them and the phone works with the same speed like 16GB card. I'm not sure if the card is more 80% full.

Sandisk "Ultra" 64gb SDXC (micro SD) card, Class 10, UHS-1

FYI... Sandisk is now selling an "Ultra" 64gb SDXC (micro SD) card that is rated Class 10 and is UHS 1. The "Ultra" tag refers to their class of cards that have 30MB/second read speed (unk. what the write speed is). Sandisk also has an "Extreme Pro" class of cards that have 95MB/second read speed, but the largest "Extreme Pro" in micro SDXC is currently 16gb. If you shop hard, you can find the 64gb "Ultra" SDXC card for less than $60 currently.
It's been previously reported that Razr supports SDXC cards, including 64gb (see this thread).
For anyone who might buy one, a word of caution. Put it in your Razr and format it there first before trying to use it on your PC. I'm not sure whether I received a defective card, or I somehow ruined my card by trying to format it to FAT32 on a Windows machine (using Paragon Partition Manager). I spent hours screwing with it before giving up and returning it to the seller.
I have the same 32gb version in my razr right now and it runs great. I assume the 64gb one wouldn't be any different.
Got mine for $23 on Amazon. Couldn't pass it up for that price.

I just picked up one of these as well. Quick question, I have the option to use either a internal SD card slot (Macbook pro) or a USB adapter (MicroSD --> USB dongle). Which one will provide faster transfer rates?
I would love one of these. Just too much for me right now.

It depends...
Is your USB adapter USB 2.0?
I typically use the SD Card slot with the adapter provided with the micro SD card.
USB for transfer unless you have a good adapter can be slower.
I use one 32gb class 10, works fine.

Have you tried a HD 1080p recording on your 32gb class 10 card ? , if yes - did you find any difference when you tried the same recording on a class 4 ( assuming 30 fps and standard cache)?
Got my one for a few weeks, phone has never been so slow.
Not faulty (tested the card multiple times) - anyone else having issues? I feel like I have a Galaxy S1. Just weird behaviour - Swype takes forever for k/b to appear, winamp takes forever for thumbnails for albums to appear - just apalling performance from my phone.

I couldn't mount it or format it. My RAZR kept saying it was damaged. So, I formatted it in my PC first and all is well.
If you're under Windows XP, you'll need to have a program to do this. I used EaseUS Partition Master which you can get for free at http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html.
So far, the card works great and it's nice to have more room for DLC and songs.
I own this card.
It was a pain in the ass to format, but once I formatted it a few times, it worked great.
64gb picked up for like 70$ shipped from ebay. All my Community, Walking Dead and music and SO much more. Couldnt be happier

You can simply put it in the phone. No need to do anything beforehand. If it requires you to format, the phone will tell you to do so.
I've given up completely on trying to get this to work in my phone. The phone will recognize it as 64GB, but will freeze up on numerous occasions even if I'm not accessing it. Does no one else have the freezing issue? Running Flick 5.0 Tornado
So what's the concensus on this "extreme" cards' performance while in the phone? Are backups faster? Transferring files to/from a dekstop while connected via USB faster?

I have a UHS 1, 64GB SD card by SanDisk (I know it isn't the 200 like you asked) and that works quite well.
I'm sure you have looked into SD card speeds (or have knowledge about them), but if you don't the UHS class 3 is the fastest.
I'm guessing to be able to use the 200GB one you would have to partition it, however I aren't entirely sure.

I have a Samsung 128GB EVO SD Card, which is UHS Class 1 and it works very well indeed, I will also attach a benchmark for your reading pleasure :good:
P.S: I should add that my Xperia Z2 still thinks that using the SDCard (Internal) is better for 4K camera than the external SDCard1 (Samsung EVO), assuming the internal is much faster as it is on-board chip.
UHS-1 or Class 10, are very similar with write speeds on Z2. I have tested UHS-1 and UHS-3 cards, the difference is about 12mb/s in write speeds on Z2!!!!
I have UHS-3 and I record 4K video directly on SD without any delay in saving, reading or writing! The inbuilt 16GB as well as my Sony UHS-3 card have same speeds in writing.

As previously stated 128GB
I am using a Sony branded 64gb. I had a PNY 64gb and it had problems in this phone and two others. So I am staying away from PNY from now on.
I saw that there are 256gb micro sd cards. Is it fake or it can be real?
Yep and they only have up to 200GB

I have a sandisk 128 gb cx class 10 in my z2 and all works flawless
I'm looking at a Samsung SD card from Amazon Canada. Most likely 128gb. The only reason I'm leaning toward Samsung is because they're water, dust, xray, magnet, shock, everything proof. And they have great reviews.
Every card of UHS-3 category is fine. Sony or Samsung or Strontium, all work well. Maximum writing speed on Z2 won't be more then 20mbps in any condition.

So does the phone really support UHS - Class 3?
I have this sd card on xperia z2 but for some odd reason its causing the phone to reboot. I don't know if its the sd card issue or the the phone. The phone wasn't able to write some of the data on it during my last tour during photographing. A lot of the stuff was corrupted. I came home and wrote stuff on it and everything is being written without a problem via those sd card usb adapters. Anyone know what might be going on?
Any card above UHS-1 is useless as Z2 won't be able to get read/write speeds on UHS-2 or higher.
However they will be useful if you frequently copy data from PC to card with a card reader.
Anyone tried 200/256 GB card?
GSMArena states that Z2 can support up to 256GB (info by them or Sony), but here You wrote that officially it's max 128.
Thinking about buying one, but it will be in a week or two, so maybe someone tried and can say it works or not before I will test it by myself?

Best Storage Solution for 4K movies/images...

Well I've been getting 4k movies ready for my z5p and the size of them is massive...
Worried that my current 64Gb micro sd would be full after one film I went and bought a 200Gb one direct from SanDisk (I'm not trusting anyone on eBay when it comes to memory cards)
And all I can say is its fantastic! You get about 189GB out of the box and after transferring all 34Gb of images and music off my other card I can also say it's fast!
I paid £116 Gbp for it from SanDisk direct.
Boxed Product
I opted for a Samsung 128gb, that was not my first choice though, I wanted the Lexar 128gb as it had a very fast read and write speed but was out of stock and coming in at around £70.
The Samsung cost me £40-£50 as a prime deal on Amazon, only reason I got it.
I've had the 128GB SanDisk card for about a year now, since I bought an LG G4 back in April 2015 and it's been great. Moved over to the Xperia Z5P and still great. The only thing I haven't tried is recording 4K video to it on the Z5P, but the performance when recording 4K on the G4 was absolutely great.

They sell direct on Amazon so type in SanDisk 200gb micro sd and u will them as the first option I think... Should say SanDisk in the seller name.
I bought a 128 gb micro sd sandisk ultra on amazon lightning deals for £30
I have the same 200GB Sandisk card. It's great. I benchmarked mine through my Macbook and even with the phone to ensure it has appropriate write/read speeds and capacity so I know it's a real Sandisk card. Although I do have some issues transferring large files over 100mb onto it, specifically apps. Snooping around on forums though, found it may be more an issue with the firmware because it "times-out" when the software thinks it's taking too long to transfer so it just gives an error. Actually, if any of you guys have any insight on why I can't transfer large apps, I'd be all ears.
question.... where are you finding your 4K content for download at? PM me if need be.... I want to take more advantage of this screen.

exFAT is Microsoft's proprietary successfor to FAT32 which had several limitations (including 4 GiB max file size, file and folder name limitations, no checksumming, etc.) which made it pretty
unsuitable for nowadays needs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT )
I hope that the acquisition of Sandisk by Western Digital will be allowed, a huge stockholder is planning (or already has) vetoed on the acquisition,
My experience with Sandisk microSD cards hasn't been the best in the past - also having read about several cards breaking after a rather short time.
Anway - back to offtopic: Sandisk afaik is the only one offering 200 GiB microSD's - so I hope it lives a long life for the OP
@celestialz
with Developer mode and adb shell you could actually see whether related kernel modules are loaded for it
(texfat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transaction-Safe_FAT_File_System)
edit:
just checked back again:
yeah, exFAT should work
So exFAT is better then FAT32 for Z5P?

Yep , Because exfat can storage file capacity more than 4GB. :fingers-crossed:
for Movies:
I use a externel Harddrive with 4TB .
For the Harddrive i use exFAT.
The Z5 Premium support only externel Harddrive with 12V power supply.
I try a lidl externel Drive with only USB Power supply and the Z5 Premium think it was only a USB Power supply and don't accept it as an externel Drive.
If you use a externel Harddisk with 4 TB and 12V, you need some time at the start. The Z5Premium check the harddisk at first, this needs 5min.
Then you can use the harddisk.
