Why is there so less interest in developing/modding Galaxy ALpha? - Samsung Galaxy Alpha

Hello friends, i use smartphones for a long time now and i love this forum. I remember the first ROM i downloaded from here, it was for the HTC Charmer and it is many years ago. I had beautiful and useful ROMs for my Galaxy S2, S3, S4 but now i got a Galaxy Alpha and i am a little bit disappointed because there is only one ROM for it - why? Is there no interest? Is the phone too new? Is it so difficult to modify the code?
Thanks in advance

Well you don't seem so with small replies like that.
Seriously tho, this phone isn't available in the US besides AT&T and it's seriously locked down. Not selling a phone in the US isn't the end all be all but it really does cut out a pretty big owner base and on top of having a secure boot loader there's no reason to buy it to dev on. It sucks because it's a pretty good phone for people who don't want a phablet.

Ok thank you, now i understand, didn't knew that. Well so i maybe should have taken an S5 instead but the Alpha looks so good...

the other reason , there are barely love for small device anymore in most Asian country.
bigger = better ?

maybe another reason is that 5.0 is coming soon

This is still a very new device and is targeted at a 'top end' user base.
Whilst the US carrier-exclusive deal will not be helping and the small form factor of the phone will put a lot of people off, it is still a superb device and custom ROMs will come in time I feel sure, but will never be on the scale of the amount available for mass-market handsets like the S4 or S5.

So I just got a free vibrant from T-mo and not sure if I should sell it and get something else or keep it..
I was hoping some vibrant owners could give me some first hand testimony about the device that could help me make my decision, of course im gonna root it and i browsed at the development section and it looks like there some really intresting stuff going on in there, which is a great sign!!
So any input is greatly appreciated!!

Great hardware, beautiful screen, and the Nexus S MAY lead to gingerbread soon. The ui is incredible and it's VERY hard to brick.
Our Dev support is amazing as well. A rooted/Rom'd Vibrant is pretty much the best it can get IMO.

It's a top-end device that should have 2.3 soon. It has the best screen and video chip of any android phone (except possibly the Nexus S), amazing for gaming and movies ... and basically everything. The contrast and brightness of this screen is unbelievable. Resolution is second only to the iPhone 4. Great dev support -- run Team Whiskey's "Nero" ROM
TL;DR

Maybe some hacked up dev version of 2.3, but it's not getting official 2.3 anytime soon, most likely never.
The question no one asked is what getting the free vibrant did for your handset upgrade qualification? If you can't get the full discount to upgrade for another 20 months or so, it might not be that great of a deal. The new, dual core phones with 2.3 will probably be out in February.
If it was free, and you aren't loaded, I would def keep it. I love my phone, and all the new roms coming out make me fall in love all over again each flash. I'm kind of a gadget geek, and I am constantly wanting the latest and greatest. I'm thinking about biting the bullet and getting the new mytouch 4g.

I think the general consensus on these forums would be that you need to root it, and ROM it. The stock android release that ships on it is littered with problems that power users like us can't handle, and Samsung doesn't have a thing on current vibrant developers who consistently make the phone amazing.
That said, 10,000,000 of these things have been sold and most people are oblivious to the issues on this phone. They use it and it's incredible hardware without issue.

Until the dual core phones come out, the Vibrant is the best phone money can buy IMO. It has the best screen in the business, a great loud speaker, super fast CPU and GPU, lots of memory and memory expansion, tough as nails to brick and the best developer support on the planet.

Galaxy S2 A Victim Of Its Own Popularity?

Is it just me or is the Galaxy S2 a victim of its own popularity in the fact that it has so many moaners? I'm completely satisfied with my White GS2, autobrightness is a bit poor but that's not a big deal to me. I've owned a few Android phones,
HTC Tattoo.
HTC Desire.
ZTE Blade.
Motorola Defy.
HTC HD2 (with Android obviously)
Sony X10i.
This phone has been my best experience with an Android phone so far. I used to be a fan of Sense but i feel Touchwiz is BETTER! I think the main problem is the happy users (The majority!) don't feel the need to speak up about it whereas many unhappy users want to make their voice heard. There are people actually saying they HATE this phone on these forums...if that is the case why are they hanging around? Sell the phone and leave the forums
I guess when a device sells as well as the GS2 you do end up with a lot of users who bought the phone simply because it's the most popular currently and they haven't done their research prior to buying or upgrading.
That, and the age-old problem that people very very rarely make the effort just to say "My [insert item here] is awesome, that is all." They more often use the effort to moan.
I bloody love my SGS2, best phone I've ever had. Makes everything else look like a poor cousin, even to the point that I don't feel the need to root at the moment - I had to root my Desire not long after I had it to love it this much!
I had the (mis?)fortune to get a play around with an IPhone 4S the other day, and the SGS2 feels so far ahead it's not even funny anymore.
I had to root my Desire for one simple reason. More space for apps. A2SD!

I think its also wanting to feel part of something (ie this forum/community)....so by posting threads it validates their time on this forum...pretty sad really
I think phones like this should come with a rating of some kind like movies do....
agreed with all the above, the phone is by far and away the best I've owned, had a x10i before which was good, arc and arc s didn't inspire me, Galaxy s2 blown me away to the point I don't really want to root/flash unless there is any real advantage to do it.....as asked in another post, looks like it's worth a flash to the latest stock rom which is what I'll do, at least I know I'll get the updates from sammy direct when released without having to wait for 02
Darkside i love that rating comment but what i love even more is your signature. That comment is pure gold.
kp it is definitely worth flashing an up to date stock rom without a doubt. Carrier updates are a joke for all devices.

The way I see it there are 3 groups of people
1 - Those who have a faulty handset myself being 1 of them with WiFi issues, poor battery, low volume to name but a few.
2 - Those who don't have a faulty handset
3 - The fanboys who even if it was faulty they would never admit it.
Well those in group 1 need to return and get a replacement or a different phone. Those in group 3 need to wake up.
And let me add,
4. Those who really aren't that bright or lead a very pessimistic life
Is this a "Brit" only forum?
Just kidding, You guys are on target. The phone stock is GREAT and if you have a bug or two, well rooting and a few choice apps can make your phone even more awsum. Just taking the time to say that my Epic touch is GREAT!!!!

Agree - I love this phone and the android community, but there are quite a few whining idiots around.
That said, we're still wayyyyyyyyyy better off than the iPhone 4S crowd. Lots of morons complaining there, and worse, they can't even do anything about it. iOS doesn't allow half the tweaks and hacks Android lets us do, especially if not jailbroken

Little Advice from Current Owners

I am seriously considering getting the OG for my next phone. Only one thing worries me, and that is the development community. I have been burned before (HTC Vivid) by buying what looks like a great phone, only to get no support from the dev community. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Do you think the devs are going to come, or is the draw of the N4 too great?

Well, obviously the dev community is here to the extent that Team CodeFire has successfully unlocked the bootloader. There is also a modified stock ROM available (which I am happily using). We should also be expecting AOSP 4.2 pretty soon (heard rumors of possibly this Friday). While there aren't many ROM options at the moment, the dev community is definitely present and I believe it's only a matter of time before we start seeing more support.
I am seriously hoping that the N4 base is able to be easily ported over as mentioned. This would make this phone a Nexus 4 but with LTE and SD!!
Honestly though, I feel LG really has a nice UI on top compared to Sense and TouchWiz.
I am definitely watching with great interest. Would love to upgrade to the OG, even though my wife insists nothing is wrong with my Vivid. I have had it over a year. Isn't that reason enough to upgrade...

Take this with a grain of salt: as in I hold no liability for this point of view.
The Captivate had identical hardware to the Nexus S and it *STILL* has a strong dev community. There is more that goes into that than just devs but, the similar hardware helps loads.
The phone despite have a very low number of devs still has an unlocked bootloader and I feel safe in saying the devs who are here are fairly high quality.
Even if we never attract a large number of devs/users the reality is we are in a beautiful spot compared to a lot of other devices right now.
It's also important to keep in mind our numbers can still grow big time. The more users we get, the more interested devs we get, the more we all benefit.
And being honest.. if you go play with the phone in store.. you probably will walk out with it... It's really, really, nice. I mean the other phones in store didn't hold a candle to it at bestbuy or at&t.

I did want to NOT like this phone - mainly because it's an LG. But it's stupidly fast and smooth. If we see AOSP 4.2 or CM 10.1 on this beast it will be unstoppable! :cyclops:
I was hell bent on getting the Note 2 for weeks; the day I went to get one, I walked out with the OG and I have no regrets. LGs UI is a welcome change and will tide me over until the custom roms show up.
You totally should get the phone as is. Even with no further dev support. You have root, unlocked bootloader, and the stock rom debloated with tether functionality restored.
There is nothing you can't do with the stock rom. And when Jellybean comes out from LG, it will be debloated again. So even if you don't want the nexus rom or cyanogenmod (you'd be crazy not too), it's the best phone out right now. Even better than the Nexus 4.

I was seriously wanting the Note II as well because the huge screen but this UI I feels MUCH better then TouchWiz and hardware wise it is an absolute beast. Not to say the Note II isn't fast but nothing is touching this device right now. This phone is screaming fast just imagine when it gets 4.1 or 4.2!
I just couldn't go for the Nexus 4 since it seriously lacks storage space. 8 or 16GB with no SD??? C'MON! Hell, I just installed The Bard's Tale and selected the HD pack and it took up 3.5GB on it's own. Missing LTE even further drives the nail down.
Unfortunately, most people outside of hardware geeks don't know how amazing this beast of a phone is. Then half the one who are hardware gurus are scared because its an LG. I convinced the guy next to me at work to pick up the Sprint version. He absolutely loves it too.
I would use the upgrade that I have on Att.. but the Dev community is very important to have... Only time will tell.. watching with great interest.

I was microscopically close to pulling the trigger on the SG3 when I decided last minute to get the OG. Never regretted it for a second and I'm still bone stock.
Looking to get this as well It's down to the N4 or this. Really want LTE. Badly. But don't want to get screwed over for dev community, but I highly doubt that will happen. AOSP ROMs are on their way, undoubtedly.
from what i was told with small modifications n4 roms will run just fine on the lgog also. so that opens up way more possibilities if that is true
This is definitely one of the best devices currently since it runs buttery smooth even on ICS. 4.1/2 or CM will make this device unbelievable.
Talked my brother into getting one. He ordered his optimus g today and it was back ordered (The s3 disappeared from amazon for att days ago, probably why.) so im gonna go out on a limb and assume we will get some more people working in here in the near future.

[Q] Get the GS4 now or wait for possible HTC One?

Hi, I know there are probably a lot of threads like this, but I really need some help deciding here. Right now I am on Verizon and I have some crappy slider phone and have never owned a smartphone before. I own an iPod Touch and Nexus 7 so I know how both IOS and Android are. Personally, I prefer android which is why I decided to originally get the Galaxy S4. Today, I heard many stories of how the HTC One might be making its way to Verizon. I need you guys to help me decide if it is worth it to wait on the possibility of the HTC One coming to Verizon or just get the GS4 right away. Never owning a smartphone before makes me very impatient, which is sort of a problem.
Basically, is there any chance of the One coming to Verizon in your opinion, and if so, when do you think it will happen, and is it worth the wait? I also should note that I like to root and install custom roms, so if you think a certain phone will have better rom support over the other, let me know. Thank you and I look forward to your responses.
Edit: I had a chat session with Best Buy Mobile and when I asked if the One will be coming to Verizon, this was their response. I am not sure if they are reliable, but since they do work with Verizon, I kinda got some trust in them. Here is the screen shot. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1484678/Proof.PNG

Right now there's nothing saying the phone will come to Verizon, for sure. Chances are 50/50 on whether it will or won't. Waiting for it to happen might be a fruitless effort.
HTC generally allows unlocking of their devices with a tool (straight from them). That's great, but the Galaxy S4 has already been unlocked...so it's kind of a non-issue. Rooting and custom roms can be done now, very easily. I'd say just pick up a GS4 and enjoy it.

Thanks for your input, I will keep those reasons in mind. I updated the topic with a conversation I had with Best Buy Mobile.
The S4 will have much more support for custom roms. I hear there are some build quality issues with the HTC One. I have the S4 on Verizon and if we had the One in Black I'd buy that too However, I have more confidence in the S4 with quality control and support.
I'm hoping T-Mobile gets the One in Black because I will get it and use that as my work cell I love the feel of a premium handset in my hand like the iPhone 5. That's the ONLY reason I am considering the One as a future purchase. The feel of it.

Th HTC One obviously has a superior hand feel and design. Sense vs TouchWiz is a toss up to me, as they are both abominations in my mind.
However, the feel and industrial design of the S4 is not nearly as bad as I'd anticipated. It's definitely do-able for most users.
The big deciding factor for me, what eliminated the HTC One from contention, is the battery life in the GS4. By all accounts I've read, the battery life is considerably superior on the Samsung phone. My own experience in the short time that I've had this phone backs up those accounts - it lasts for quite a long time.

The deciding factor for me was lack of a user-replaceable battery in the One, and no SD card slot. S4 has both those, so, easy decision

Why There Is No Development?!

This is just sad!!!
LG makes awesome devices, the G2 is one of the best devices available now, great hardware, great screen yet no devs or users buy it. I know its like the chicken and the egg, but still, its wired not a lot of people buy it.
HTC has S-OFF and locked bootloader, Samsung also has now that stup!d KNOX, Sony and Moto makes pretty bad devices, why devs don't develop for LG devices?!?! Why?!?!
Because no one has unlocked the G2 bootloader.
Also, it is not a popular phone.

I'm talking about LG in general. The Optimus G doesn't have a lot of roms.
Their phones are not popular, but they are awesome phones!
This thread was with rhetorical questions, I know this is the situation and all that, I wanted to create a discussion about this subject
Is there anyone actively looking for exploits in our bootloader?

I do think I heard some people on the G2 IRC (freenode #lg-g2) are attempting, but I am not certain if this is true.
Anyhoo, no progress has been made currently.

Go Bucks!!!!
Everyone that's demanding development/boot loader unlock...first its only been a week since the phone was released...what did you expect every dev to go out and buy a g2...next why don't you go try to learn all the complexities that are involved in the process...just cause there's no news been made public doesn't mean things aren't being worked on. The appropriate individuals will say something when the time is right..whenever the exploit/exploits are done is when they're done...don't rush our devs, make stupid posts, and pointless threads as that will just piss some of them off...that being said things are in the works, just be patient.

Speaking of the bootloader, is there a button combo that can be used to access it? Or is there no such option on this phone. This is my first LG device so I'm feeling a bit like a fish out of water.

I suspect that Development will come once ppl realize the Note 3 is gonna be locked down pretty hard (might take as long as the first OTA to kill any exploits like the S4). Just give it time.. VZN ppl will want a Nexus 5 like device and the LG G2 will be the closest thing hardware wise to it. Just don't expect crazy dev like a flagship Samsung device or the Moto X but there should be some in the near future.

+1. If nobody knew any better they would believe it was a Nexus 5 just from looking at screen, and the LG emblem. Oh yeah, the N5 is shipping with the same hardware...hmm um Verizon LG N5 *cough cough G2*. Development will come and when it does just root. CM. And Verizon N5 . Clearly LG is learning from their Google Nexus 4 and thats what we see in the G2, lets see the difference when the N5 comes out i bet they will be virtually identical, aesthetics and hardware wise, obviously not the software.

The closest I know, and I dont think it's bootloader, is Volume up and plugging in USB. It brings up a download/firmware upgrade screen, which is also where you can see the Rooted boot flag displayed.
There mere fact that we have root (AND got rid of carrier ID) is indicative that development is happening.
Be patient folks

Yeah that's all I've found so far too. Well that and I did stumble on our hidden diagnostics screen. (##228378 in dialer). There is a field test mode there. Doubt it'll come into play for anything but never know I guess.
You know why there's no one developing on LG phones? Because people $hitting on LG phones like it's their job. Just look at the new arstechnica review of the G2. They made it sound like it's the worst phone ever made.

I don't think he was 'rushing' the devs.. Just asking why there's not much development on LG devices. But yeah, its only been out for a week, and it does seem like an awesome phone. It already has root, just give it time.

The Samsung fanboy is strong in that one. He completely blew things out of proportion, like come on, a font bug?! Then he left out how the camera was, just pointing out he got a bad auto image once. Then you read the S4 review and its like God handed it to him himself

I hate to bust people's bubble but I've been around Android and its development community (XDA) a long time and from my experience I'm going to say once a phone lacks any development at the beginning, it usually stays that way to the bitter end. Development won't magically just pick up.
It's just an unfortunate part of being in a crowded phone market with HTC, Samsung and even Sony. Developers rather develop for the more popular headsets and the LG will be on the outside looking in.
I'm not going to sugar coat this, if you bought this phone for development I suggest you return it while you have a return window, cause development....it's not going to happen.
If you fell in love with the G2 phone I suggest you wait for the Nexus version of it and then you're going to have a real development community.

John Snow, I didnt know you had a computer in the North? There are several developers who are trying/finding the best way to unlock the bootloader, what exactly did you expect the developers to do within a week without an unlocked bootloader? Yes, some developers go for only the big devices, and guess what, this is one. You seem to know nothing about anything around here, so dont go spreading lies.
