[Q] Nexus 5 Foolish, Frustrated and confused - but I guess my fault - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Foolish and frustrated; I refuse to belief that I now have just a light up Nexus 5 paperweight. I had recently purchased a Nexus 5 Android phone and I absolutely loved it. I unlocked and rooted it and had it tweaked and tuned like a thoroughbred. It was clean trimmed and snake quick. I then received the notifications that 5.0 Lollipop was available to download and upgrade to I was keen to see how much better my phone could be. The upgrade downloaded fine but the installation failed again and again, so I thought I might have installed an app or something that may be interfering with the 5.0 upgrade. I figured wiping and resetting to stock would allow the upgrade and then I would just fine tune it again.
I clicked to wipe and reset – The phone indicated that the wipe was successful but then the phone went black and then lit up with the black and white Google Logo and that is where it remains. (A lit up paperweight)
Is there any way this phone can be salvaged?
Again needing a phone I purchased another Nexus 5 and although the tweaking I had down to the first one far outperformed this new one, I have not done anything other than upgrade it to 5.0 Lollipop.
I would love it if I can resuscitate the first one and just use the second new one as back up phone.
Is there any hope?

Boot into bootloader and flash the update manually. Ota only work on pure stock set ups.

Thank you very much for your reply. I would love to try that fix, how exactly would I go about doing that?

Task's launcher in V5 and V6 is different than stock TW KME. It has the bubbles removed on top.
When you went back to stock, did you do a full wipe of your system first? Let us know what steps you took to get back to stock to figure this out.
thanks for the quick reply, i just followed the first thread of i think in the development section that tells u how to root,unroot,roms...etc...
there was pretty much just 3 sentences.. i downloaded the filesfordummies.zip.... went to cwm and loaded up the hc-3.1_ota-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip, then i unrooted after that with odin.... but i did notice i get a force close after i booted up..so i redid the process again and wiped the cache, wiped and resetted the data, and wiped the dalvic thing... then i reloaded up the hc-3.1_ota-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip again... then i unrooted again (i rerooted earlier in the step again so i could unroot)....i see the stock stuff, but it seems the bubbles are still not there, the menu is still dark (unlike what i had in the stock one, and the widgets like the clock and weather that appears when i first purchased it is not at the homescreen)...so i know something is wrong..

Your on the original stock honeycomb. I can't remember if the bubbles were on vanilla honeycomb. Upgrade your Tab to Touchwiz to get the other features back.
If you need to upgrade link, here is KMB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205816
It was the first official Touchwiz update in the US. You can upgrade to KME from there to be at the latest and greatest.
hmm..ok ill try that out... do i have to get back the cwm to use it?? thanks!!!

Yes, you can use the filesfordummies to
1. flash cwm on ODIN
2. install zip via CWM
3. flash stocky recovery on ODIN
4. factory reset in stock recovery
5. go to settings>about and upgrade to KME
This method and the KMB link I posted will keep you unrooted and stay within warranty. This is what I do if I want a completely clean ROM.
Another medthod and possibily the easiest is found on this site from Overcome. (Started yesterday so I forgot to mention)
They have a download called restock and it will ODIN KME on your Tab and give you the chance to wipe clean.

i think im trying out the overcome way...im dling it right as im typing..ill update you...i think either way im going back to stock then returning this one (its only been like 5 days from best buys) and getting the white one
btw, i noticed youre from the bay area..maybe ill just drop it by your house so you can help me root my new one and install adhoc lol jk
alright i got the stock rom back in there now. all the widgets and bubble things are back too...i appreciate it!
now im wondering..is that task650 rom with the newer software, or is the factory one the newest?? thanks

Both are KME which is the latest US official release.
Other than that, tasks is themed and has enhancements that make it much much smoother than stock.

ah ok, so its just the theme that made the menus/task look different in colors. i have it all fixed now. i will PM you if you dont mind regarding adhoc tether. thanks again.

/old school winmo user android noob question

Is there a way to stop the auto updates on Rezound?
I have a bionic, and might sell it since I'm a HTC fan and love HTCs. But the biggest problem I have ran into is the auto updates not updating since I ran the root/custom ROM thing on the phone. I had it plugged in last night and woke up to my boss banging on my door to wake up for work since it tried to auto update. If I can just disable the automatic OTA updates I would be happy.
I'm sure there's a simple setting to change somewhere...and I apologize since I haven't had acomputer for like a year and I have only spent the year before programming so the only thing I really know mobile wise is Windows Mobile... Sadly, I miss WinMo lol.
/Help an old man.
Edit: by not updating I mean it will try to update automatically without my permission, and will load the bootloader screen and will just error out on the bootloader screen and will not reboot the phone so my alarms will not go off in the morning... I cannot have this. if this is the case, the rezound is for sale tomorrow...but I don't want it to be. I know there has to be a simple setting somewhere...
Edit2: I really need to change my signature lol. I haven't changed it in 2+ years.

BS update I already have in my rom but it boots into the bootloader and fails there and stays in the bootloader and just chills in the bootloader all night. Which causes my boss banging on my door ten minutes before my shift. lol.

Should only try to update if it detects your firmware version as 1.02.605.6, the first Gingerbread build that shipped with the phone. It is trying to apply the 2.01.605.11 Over-The-Air update from February, the latest official build released.
Usually fails from being on a Custom ROM, low battery, or bad download. Aside from stock ROM, only had this update issue on one old custom GB ROM from the Development section.
So, what ROM setup do you have? There is probably a solution on the forum to edit build.prop firmware version or something to get the update refused. Will take a look. Long term solution is to back up data and update to a newer GB ROM based on the OTA firmware, or do all the stuff to get ICS, Unlock the phone, and S-off once you read up more.
i was once on winmo too i had an omnia but if you have a custom rom on the rezound it will not update

You know, I spaced that out. I know I was running the latest before I flashed it, and I just assumed it was an up to date ROM. I'll have to check and see what version of GB it is, otherwise I'll just get a ICS ROM on it this weekend since I have time. I guess that's what you get for rushing through and doing it drunk.
I am running the Business Gingersense ROM btw.

It attempts to update, but boots into the recovery (I think I might have said bootloader in my OP), and then fails to install the update due to the custom ROM, but sits in the recovery menu and does not reboot automatically.
But I think the post above yours explained why it was happening...I was assuming it was an up to date GB ROM since I read the update was from February and it's been a few months, but now that I have time this weekend I'll be able to get things fixed.
Thanks again to both of you for replies. (And sorry for the bump in the threads guys)

[Q] Galaxy Mega screen stopped working after upgrade to kitkat

Hi,
I flashed kitkat 4.4.2 stock firmware today using Odin, After the mobile booted successfully the touch screen stopped working completely, also the option and back button stopped also, I tried reflashing multiple times the same thing.
I have replaced this screen and the digitizer 10 days ago after it crashed, it was working normally before upgrade.
What could be the problem.
Regards
Are you sure your using the right odin model?
Run in administration mode, and disable all virus pc programs.
Also, after flash reboot into stock recovery and data reset/ Wipe.
If that doesn't work the most likely you have a bad piece of hardware or something is unperfectivley seated. Try reconnecting the ribbon cables.

It will be interesting to see how they could revert firmware from KK to JB... IMO this is impossible because of new bootloader in KK. Anyway let they make phone usable on ANY firmware.
Probably jigg it right?

It is unclear for now but there may be involved e-fuses technology - that means physically burning connections inside chip during firmware upgrade, so in that case it impossible to bring back previous state.
The main problem is why replaced screen doesn't work after flashing KK. I do not know what version of Mega do you have, but i red on this forum so some versions required exclusively Samsung original parts. People who changed screens by themself obtained i.e. from ebay had problems after upgrading to KK. Lets prove the source of parts in service where was replaced your screen.
EDIT// You can read about it here

[Q] Help with new to me Sensation 4G

Hello everyone,
I am a complete noob and hopefully you guys can help me out. I have tried to wrap my head around all the new android terms and my head is spinning. Anyways, I was given a HTC Sensation 4G Z710a on the Bell network. I registered on the htcdev to unlock the bootloader and following the steps, I fail to get the token. I have tried on two PC's and my friend tried on his MAC. My friend thinks the reason it fails is because the phones software is not up to date. Is it possible that it cannot get the token because the software is out of date? We tried to update the software and it fails. The problem looks like it is due to the installation of a clockworkmod. I have tried using the factory reset and the the cwm to do a factory reset and nothing has changed. Other than this, it looks like the phone has S-OFF and is not rooted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind of hard for us to tell you if the issue is the software update, when you haven't told us which update it's on. However, since the phone has already been modded, and is S-Off, that means the bootloader is already unlocked so using the HTCdev website is not needed. You can just update via a custom rom since you already have CWM.

Thank you for your reply with the good news. This is probably irrelevant now that you said i can update via a custom rom. Under software information: Android Version; 2.3.3, HTC Sense Version; 3.0, Software Number 1.35.666.1.
It looks like now I need to research how to update via a custom rom and which rom to get. (Update. I looked into flashing a ruu and my cid is SuperCID 11111111. As long as I find a ruu that is Pyramid TMOUS, it should be good?) I am exited to be getting rid of my junky iphone. Do you have any suggestions as to what rom to get??

I would upgrade the phone to ICS via the RUU. I suggest this for 2 reasons - 1) so you can have the newest update and firmware as just flashing an ICS rom by itself will not be a good idea as you will have issues with the touch sensors and radios (touch screen won't respond and signal issues) and 2) so you can have experience on how to put the phone back to stock in case there's an issue during flashing a rom, or you need to resell it. Once you have the RUU and know it works, then flashing roms will be much less scary as there aren't many things you can do that would not be fixable by it. You can get away with just flashing the rom and the firmware as well, but I speak with many years of experience and 100s of phones under my belt, and I know that whenever I play with a new phone, I learn how to fix it first before I learn how to mod it.
As far as suggestions, I would start with something simple and solid like Android Revolution HD. See what you like and dislike and go from there.

Here is another update, and I am not sure if you can help. I thought everything was fine with the install, but it seems like my mobile network is not working. I followed all the steps from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849 except I used Clockwork Mod instead of 4EXT Touch Recovery. I looked through all the related settings and even tried changing them, rebooting and seeing if it made any changes. I also even followed the steps a second time and got the same result.

Is it just data or are you unable to make calls and texts as well? If it's just data, then most likely it is an issue with the Bell APN needing set correctly. If you don't get a signal or any connection to the cell towers, then you might not have the right firmware or radio. Did you update to the last update HTC put out for it?

I have been getting around 12 hours out of my battery with not too much use on the phone. I am running the SebastionFM Kernel. I read that I will get better battery life on the Bricked Kernel. Can you tell me if that is the way to go? I am trying to dl the kernel to flash it, but I am not sure which file to download. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256668. Depends on which rom you are using... The developer of the kernel mentioned near the end of the thread that his kernels are a little outdated for the newer Sense roms that are out there, so you might need to proceed with caution. Whenever you are flashing kernels, you should both make sure you have things backed up somewhere safe (Google, your PC, etc) as well as make a nandroid backup in recovery before flashing. It's typically recommended to wipe the cache and dalvik cache before installing new kernels (since you are S-Off, S-On users need a slightly different path to upgrade...). You might look into why your battery life is not as good as it could be in it's current configuration first before changing major components such as the kernel. Look into Greenify to hibernate apps while the screen is off and something like GSam Battery Monitor or Better Battery Stats or Wakelock Detector to break down the battery stats and wakelocks as those typically cause the biggest loss of battery life.

Using a different keyboard will let you send Emojis, but not really sure about enabling the view from other people's messages off the top of my head, sorry. I recommend SwiftKey for a great keyboard replacement with lots of built in Emojis.

Back to 4.4.4 from Lollipop

For anybody that wants to go back to 4.4.4 from 5.0 I can confirm it works great, I just flashed back with Odin. The 4.4.4 firmware is at sammobile right below the lollipop firmware. The 4.4.4 flash put it into a bootloop to which I then factory reset and it started up perfectly with none of the completely unusable issues I was having.
Bummed out that I can't use lollipop for the time being, but more than relieved that I have a usable phone again, I thought it was toast.Lollipop made my phone worthless, literally couldn't do anything, major bootloops and constant crashes.
I made another thread about it here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-note-3/help/reboots-lollipop-t3090421
You should retry the upgrade, it's faster and more stable. You just had a corrupted file or something, if you really want the best is worth a try. It's 40% faster. There was just something wrong with your install.
Did you do a factory reset when you upgraded? A lot of Note 4 users who upgraded had similar issues which a factory reset corrected.
I took the upgrade and found it to be faster and more reliable as well. Still fingers crossed for a root exploit. At least we know if an exploit ever happens for 4.4.4 then we can downgrade to get it. Good to know!
Oh really? I thought we couldn't roll back after taking 5.0. I am having a hard time a stable host to download 4.4.4
Can someone help me out with this? <confused>

Success! The 4.4.4 firmware took forever to download but worth it! Thank for this!

Trust me I really wanted it and tried all the usual steps. I think something is wrong with my phones hardware that works mostly ok on this version. I actually stayed on an old version for a very long time, I rooted "root de la vega" and took one ota using the supersu option to keep root when using an ota. The next update after that would not work for me, I would have had to wipe and odin to update, so I held off thinking I wasn't missing anything. Till about a week or less after 4.4.4 came out then my phone started crashing the moment I received or made a call. I hadn't gotten any new apps or anything like that but just in case I factory reset to see if it fixed with no luck. So I finally upgraded via odin, no root now, but miraculously my phone could make calls again. I am giving you this essay because I have a feeling this issue is related. It seems it's my phones hardware that is messed up and i'm just lucky that 4.4.4 works at all. I still have issues every couple days where I make or receive a call and hear nothing, with a reboot needed to fix, that is confirmed still after a fresh install of 4.4.4 after all the 5.0 stuff I tried. Anyways thats why I think it's my phone. I wish I had an extended warranty so I could just update and make a claim.
As for everything I tried in the update, I took the ota, which was literally unusable by anybodys standard, I could use the phone for about 5-20ish seconds before it would crash, turning the sound to mute would help, but still crash at a couple minutes of use. I downloaded the firmware and flashed via Odin, same exact issues, changed nothing. Did several factory resets between all these steps. I kind of walked through the process on that thread I posted in the OP.
After making this thread I did try it one last time and flashed via odin, knowing that I had a workable fix, but same exact thing again. If they release another update I'll try then, but looks like I'm stuck till then at least.

Yeah I did anything and everything I could, no luck. I think my phone itself is the problem.

Awesome, glad it helped. I'm SO glad they didn't block the ability to do this, I'd have been out a phone if they had.

Can you be more specific? There are two firmware versions that are 4.4.4-NJ6 and NK1. I assume you used NK1? I'm a newb and sort of know how to use Odin/download mode. What version of Odin did you use?
I want to rollback to the previous build until they sort out the radio issues. My phone was fine on NK1 but on lollipop it drops LTE indoors frequently. Aside from the radio issue, lollipop runs great. I factory reset after the update, didn't make a difference.

You can use any radio with any rom. Just flash the modem file via flash app or Odin.

Are you certain I can use a KitKat radio on lollipop? Verizon Note 3. If so, I'll do that right now.

I haven't done it, but I have mixed radios and roms before for example kitkat radio with JB rom.
Well, I'd still rather 4.4.4.. it's too bad. When I have strong LTE it's amazing. Did this speedtest today - kilobytes per sec. Incredible.

No matter what....once you go to lollipop, you can NOT go back to any earlier version.

Doesn't the OP state that you can revert back?

Yep. The OP did. Hell that's the title of the topic and there's two confirmed posters that did it successfully. I only wanted to know if they flashed NJ6 or NK1 and what build of Odin they used..

Okay, to anyone whose interested: I used Odin 3.09 & NK1 (most current VZW build of 4.4.4) and it worked. Phone went into a bootloop, started recovery did a factory reset an it's back to normal.
Lollipop ran fine on my phone-probably because I reset it as soon as I updated...BUT, my data signal was halved. I get a weak LTE signal at work and by weak I mean 1 or 2 bars 105-115DB at best. Old brick building and I work in the basement. On lollipop, it wouldn't hold onto LTE anymore. It'd flip between 1x/3g..usually settling on 3G. Voice was unaffected. Hopefully they sort this out but this sort of signal performance (especially when it was fine on KK) is unacceptable.
Rolling back to NK1 has solved that. Thanks to the OP!
I can also confirm that flashing 4.4.4 NK1 from 5.0.0 OB6 works.
Tried it myself, but after I got done playing with it I went back to 5.0.0 OB6 afterwards.
I didn't look to see if it kept the 5.0.0 radio when downgrading to 4.4.4, but it kept the 5.0.0 boot loader.
I did not test the radio (as I didn't have a usable sim card at the time.)
Also, don't try to run URDLV on the 4.4.4 firmware before flashing, it will not boot (even with a factory reset.)
But I didn't try to flash a modified 4.4.4 firmware after 4.4.4 was already on there.
so just so I understand there's no root for 4.4.4 or 5.0 but it's possible to go back to 4.4.4 from 5.0 ?
